A special culinary experience
Very professional service during our dining experience and Knowledge staff proud of their products and service. The experience menu started with pumpkin and hazelnuts with slices of truffle. This was followed by tuna, butter fish and then lamb. The seven course menu included sweet items of Beaufort cheese with apricot and a tasty feijoa sorbet. At $180 per person this is a top end food experience lasting at least 2 hours. Wine matching was an additional $90 each and the wines were expertly matched to the plates of beautifully presented foods.

We were celebrating our anniversary, and what an incredible experience. The food was absolutely stunning, the entire night was fabulous. I cannot stop thinking about each course and what it offered.

Amazing food and wine! The degustation menu was so well thought through. Tasted amazing and was presented beautifully with detailed explanation. How wonderful to have so much thought and care go into our food and dining experience. Thank you for an excellent evening. Special thanks to the staff who made the night even more enjoyable. Also, what a gorgeous building!

I am a big foodie and this is possibly the best meal I have ever had, the waitress was exceptional and the chefs bought each course out with explanations, had the wine match and they were happy to switch out any i didn't fancy. Cannot reccomend enough 💛

This was the third time I have been to this establishment each time run under a different owner. Each time was a degustation dinner and each one has always been superb. We have also been to a number of others around wellington. This one would have to rate as my all time favourite. We had the wine match. It was nice to see they has looked outside the norm with the pairing. We have found a perfect Pinot. The pace of the meal was just right and left the resturant extremely satisfied. The service was true 5 star. Hopefully I will be able to revisit in the future.
Be the first to ReplyBest meal ever.
Possibly one of the best meals we have ever had. The chef explaining each course, food I could never cook myself. And the service was impeccable. Looking forward to coming back another day.
Be the first to ReplyFaultless intimate dining
Set in a Victorian cottage this small restaurant with a really small kitchen does a brilliant job. The 6 course tasting menu at NZ $115 was exceptional value, the amuse bouche were varied, complex and delightful, the snapper with green mandarin (including mandarin oil) was a revelation, the Canterbury lamb with quince, potato and mustard greens (BBQ beetroot substituted for a vegetarian) was thoughtful and well balanced. The feijoa dessert spoke of it's kiwi origins and the petit four were perfection. The signature wines were also really good, we had a Vincent Careme Vouvray and the Chateauneuf du Pape, both were well priced and amazing. Service from our American wait person was responsive and the wine advice from the French owner was much appreciated. It was hard to know how they can do this for the money, we loved it.

We had the degustation menu here. It was an excellent showcase of NZ produce and French classic cooking techniques but with finesse you’d expect from a modern bistrot dégustation menu. At 120 NZD a head (+60 for the full flight) it was good value too. The front of house and maître d’ (same person) was bright, friendly, and knowledgeable. The food was served and explained by the chefs (who are also the owners). The whole experience was excellent, intimate, non-fussy, and sophisticated all at the same time.

This wowed on so many levels, unbelievable service, food and ambience. Loved that the chefs introduced you to each dish.
Be the first to ReplyMilestone birthday celebration
We went here last night with my husband and in laws to celebrate his birthday. The meal was exceptional and genuinely the best meal I’ve ever had. Every dish was a revelation and discovery. From the very first dish which blew our minds with the experience of flavours and temperatures changing from I’ve cold to warm in one mouth full. Not a cheap experience by anyones standard but was absolutely worth it and if you have a reason to celebrate I can’t think of a better place to do it.
Be the first to ReplyProblem With Booking As A Single Diner
I had a really weird online booking experience as a solo diner (I was on business solo) so I didn't manage to actually book so cannot rate the food. However if I entered online as a single diner (+1) then there were no tables available. So I was curious so tried agan with +2 for the same date & time (couples) and could book a table online. Ended up going to Great India who were very happy to accomadate single business diners.
Be the first to ReplyBrilliant food, service and ambiance. Really exceptional!
We really enjoyed an excellent degustation where each course was bought to the table by one of the chefs who carefully told us how the dish was prepared. We found the whole experience really brilliant. Sure a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for here. For us one of the best restaurants we have visited in many a year, and it deserves great accolades. We did not have matching wines, however the wine list we chose from was extensive and the staff friendly and knowledgeable.
Be the first to ReplyTruly brilliant food and service
Truly beautiful degustation with excellent service made this a really memorable dinner. We loved that the chef for each dish presented it at the table and explained the great care that went into preparation. Must be one of the best fine dining places in the whole of New Zealand

Cute, unassuming restaurant. Although don’t expect to have a private conversation. Cuisine was well appointed and cooked to perfection. Recommend asking for wine match for tasting menu. Wait staff may forget to offer it! Highly recommend checking out.
Be the first to ReplyGood probably just not on my visit
Good but just not on my trip. Really wanted to like this place and had high expectations as I’ve just relocated from London and eat out a lot so wanted to find a local place that reflects European standards. Staff knowledgeable and courses explained well but every single dish was cold. All of them and as we were seated by the kitchen, it made no sense. I overlooked the first three lukewarm dishes thinking maybe it was intentional though doubted fish should be half cold. Even the jus the poured I was thinking please be hot so the dish is warmed but even the jus was luke warm which was disappointing and rather annoying. When the pork came out cold I had to return it and it took an exceptionally long time to heat up a tiny portion whereby my companion had finished my wine was gone and the result was rather tough pork. I’d possibly try it again but I am in no rush as I think one course being cold is disappointing but all of them lukewarm? So either people don’t complain about cold food or my bad luck on that day.

I went with my sister and brother n law. Their first degustation - and it didn’t disappoint. They got the wine match - I don’t drink so they made some amazing mock tails and didn’t feel like I was missing out. I eat well- I eat out often. This wasn’t a soulless array of pretentious edible art. This was family, food & flavour. I got it. They wanted the food to take you to where it takes them. It might be presented nicely but that’s not the point. The chef, the Demi, the sommelier all took turns explaining the dishes, the wine and the why. It wasn’t rushed and my questions were all answered. I left happy - and yes the food was great, but it’s often great - we are lucky to have an array of talented chefs in this country. I was happy because I felt like I’d been a part of something truely special. Still don’t get it? Then go. It’s not cheap and it shouldn’t be if you want the best of what New Zealand has to offer. Thank you. I’ll be back next season.
Be the first to ReplySimply superb degustation menu in Wellington
This deservedly is rated in the top 5 restaurants in Wellington. Low key, but refined ambience, and the chef and sous chef are simply passionate about the taste sensations they create, which they explain before each course. The 7 course degustation menu had a vegetarian starter and appetiser, a John Dory dish, a lamb dish (swapped out for smoked beetroot ‘steak’ for the pescatarian), a cheese dish, a palate cleanser, and dessert. Fortunately everything was light! But then before and after were ‘snacks’ and ‘treats’, the names which didn’t do justice to the taste explosion of 3 different amuse bouches to kick the evening off, and the chocolate ‘two ways’ to finish. Everything was sublime. Expensive yes. Worth it yes. Perfect for a special occasion. Personal highlight was the kikorangi blue cheese mousse with freeze dried plums, pistachios and raw onions in a buckwheat crust. Awesome.

25th Anniversary Dinner
Making the decision to go to Jano Bistro for our 25th Wedding anniversary was the best decision I have ever made. I can not rate this restaurant highly enough. 7 courses matched with 7 wines to perfection. Food & Service that would compare with the best Michelin star restaurants in the world! All here in Wellington NZ!
Be the first to Reply5 stars is not enough!
Cannot rate Jano Bistro highly enough and the TripAdvisor rating of #1 in Wellington is duly deserved.
8pm booking in the upstairs area with a view out the window. The seating is very comfortable and intimate.
Jano offers a set Tasting menu on Thursday nights (what we had, which we'd been their Friday for the Tasting Experience - more courses). Each course is expertly prepared and then delivered to the table by a different member of the Jano team (waitress, chefs, head chef) and clearly explained. The wine matches were also a nice accompaniment.
Couldn't fault any of the dishes and it was hard to pick a highlight purely because they were all so good.
Can't recommend highly enough for a nice night out.
Outstanding!
Our experience at Jano has to be one of the best I have had! The food was exquisite and I really appreciated the chefs serving up each dish, with an explanation of how it was prepared and how it should be eaten. The wine pairing was also excellent and really complemented each dish. I love the fact the restaurant has a limited number of covers so the experience is intimate.

3 4 months ago me and my friends went to Wellington for a trip. We were actually searching for a awesome restaurant for having food. Finally one of my friends who lives in Wellington recommended this restaurant. This is one of the great restaurant i have seen in my life. Especially the foods were so tasty and the service was so great.

Superbly presented and delicious food. The depths of flavour were particularly noted. We found the staff attentive and friendly. It is always appreciated when the chef brings the dishes to the table and describes the ingredients and cooking methods.
