Makoto Miami Beach Reviews from The Last Year
I've come to realize that the foodie scene is incredibly
I've come to realize that the foodie scene is incredibly disappointing in Miami, so when I do come across a place with delicious food, I'm caught off guard and pleasantly surprised. This was the case with Makoto! Finally, fresh ingredients and flavors that make my mouth sing! My friend and I ordered the edamame, cucumber salad, wagyu beef cooked on a hot stone, skirt steak and salmon rolls, as well as the chocolate cake for dessert. All of it fantastic. The standouts for me were the cucumber salad and skirt steak. I was drooling over the cucumber salad, so refreshing and tasty on a hot summer day, and I've also tried to replicate it at home! The skirt steak was so juicy and tender and delicious, not sure what it was marinated in, but it was fantastic. Warm and attentive service. Cute ambiance. Located on the third floor at Bal Harbor mall. Highly recommend!
Being able to secure a table inside with no reservation for
Being able to secure a table inside with no reservation for a party of 3 on Friday night was a great feeling, so upon sitting down the vibes were off to a good start. I've always wanted to try Makoto, and coming from Philly I've been to quite a few Starr restaurants, so I know the quality and creativity of the food was going to be top-notch. The atmosphere felt like you were at an exclusive party and it kind of felt a little intimidating, especially being tucked away inside the super luxe Bal Harbor Shops. Some of my favorite dishes were the Softshell Crab Roll, Kobe Fried Rice and the Toban Yaki which was such a unique and flavorful dessert consisting of different textures (creamy sorbet, crunchy macaroons, pieces of fruit and cake crumbles) and temperatures. This is for sure a solid place for sushi and Japanese cuisine, you can tell there is a lot of attention in each dish. Is it a liiiiitle pricy? Of course, but it's worth it and you wont leave disappointed. I'd love to go back and try more things, maybe next time with a reservation ;)
Heard great things and went to try for Father's Day.
Everything was just okay, but for the premium that you pay at this restaurant, I expected more. In terms of food, we went for Father's Day brunch and ordered Wagyu Sashimi, crispy Brussels Sprouts, short Rib Yaki Noodles, Chicken Wings and Japanese Eggplant from the Robata, and the Wagyu filet. Everything was either over salted and sauced, or lacking in flavor (most notably the Wagyu dishes). Our glasses of water were also consistently empty for long stretches of time. I'd save your time and money, and go elsewhere!
Makoto is a renowned restaurant located in Bal Harbour
Makoto is a renowned restaurant located in Bal Harbour Shops. It has served upscale sushi dishes and Japanese cuisine for 13 years, and has become a staple of visiting Bal Harbour. The vibes are an emmaculate mix of families celebrating a special occasion, couples celebrating date night, tourists, and the occasional celebrity spotting. The food (served family style) and drinks do not skip a beat, and although pricey, match the quality one would expect at this institution. This was actually our first time dining at Makoto, so we decided to order from a variety of sections on the menu. Our delightful server, Siripon, gave us several suggestions as well. Here is what we finally ordered: Crispy Rice Tuna ($17): 4 generously sized portions of crispy tuna rice topped with a slice of serrano chili on top of each roll. Japanese Eggplant Robata ($13): thick slices of Japanese eggplant. served with niku chicken miso (a chicken miso topping/sauce). Braised Beef Yaki Noodle ($30): yaki noodles mixed with chunks of steak and mixed with tamarind soy, ginger aioli. Soft Shell Crab Maki ($20): 5 pieces of sushi made with crab tempura tobiko, avocado, scallion, asparagus, and chili aioli. Okinawan Tres Leches ($16): made with roasted pineapple, japanese whisky spiked meringue, soy ice cream. Considering Makoto is widely known for their fresh sushi, I was surprised to hear that my fiancée actually liked the Soft Shell Crab Maki the least out of everything we ordered. Despite the quality ingredients, she thought this roll felt less "special" compared to everything by else we ordered. The Japanese Eggplant Robata was a very unique dish and a good portion size for $13, and the Braised Beef Yaki Noodle was a great example of why Makoto is also known for how they grill their proteins. This dish and the Crispy Rice Tuna blew her away! The Okinawa Tres Leches was a unique twist on a dessert that can be found on other menus in Miami. The japanese whisky spiked meringue and soy ice cream provided a great symphony of flavors that made this iteration of tres leches taste memorable and not as overbearingly sweet compared to other traditional tres leches recipes. We are very excited to return to Makoto the next time we are in the area! We'd definitely order the Japanese Eggplant Robata and the Beef Yaki Noodles again! In addition, I think we may start off our next visit with a sampler to truly experience the freshness and variety of their sashimi/maki choices.
Cute restaurant, food came fast.
Everything was good except the salmon sushi, it had a weird slimy texture that made me gag. Couldn't finish the roll, I think the salmon was cut wrong. It was really bad.
Came here for our anniversary dinner, not only was the food
Came here for our anniversary dinner, not only was the food AMAZING, but Eric truly elevated our dining experience. Without his knowledge, patience, and recommendations, I don't think our dinner would have been the same. Thank you Eric for making our evening so special, and Makoto for providing delicious food and enjoyable ambiance!
Ate there for Father's Day.
The service was very lackluster. The edamame and fried rice was over cooked. Drinks were nothing special and same goes for tuna roll. Personally do not see the draw but I guess it works for some people. The restaurant was full and ambiance is pleasant due to the location. Service and food was 10 times better at sister restaurant Le Zoo downstairs.
Sorry, but I don't know what all the fuss is about this
Sorry, but I don't know what all the fuss is about this place. I always give a place a few chances because sometimes the chef is 'off' but this was my third and last time. I got talked into going there again this last time and had to send my dinner back twice. It was so salty that it was not edible. The place is beautiful and the wait staff is on point but their food is nothing special and very overpriced. I don't like getting ripped off and that's how I feel there.

Makoto at Bal Harbour Shops offers an exceptional dining experience that combines casual elegance with impeccable service. From the moment we arrived, the staff's attentiveness and professionalism set the tone for a memorable meal. The ambience of the restaurant strikes a perfect balance between casual and elegant. The stylish decor, comfortable seating, and soft lighting create a welcoming and sophisticated atmosphere, ideal for both intimate dinners and casual gatherings. The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the food. We ordered the spicy tuna roll and the spicy tuna crispy rice, and both dishes were outstanding. The fresh ingredients used in each dish were evident, with vibrant flavors and perfect textures. The spicy tuna roll was expertly prepared, with a delicate balance of heat and flavor. The tuna was incredibly fresh, and the roll was beautifully presented, making each bite a delight. The spicy tuna crispy rice was a unique and delicious experience. The crispy rice provided a satisfying crunch that paired perfectly with the spicy tuna topping. The flavors were well-balanced, and the dish was both visually appealing and delectable. Overall, Makoto at Bal Harbour Shops offers a unique dining experience that stands out for its casual elegance, impeccable service, and use of fresh ingredients. The best
I recently visited Makoto for probably the fiftieth time last week. As always, the food was excellent with probably the best sushi in the Miami area, and the staff and service where excellent and quick. The atmosphere is excellent for lunch and vibrant for dinner. The food arrived very quickly with almost no time passing without anything on the table.

I come a long way to see my dermatologist in Baltimore
I come a long way to see my dermatologist in Baltimore Harbour, so I always treat myself to Makoto sushi before the long drive back & it makes my day ! Today I'm enjoying a late lunch solo and the spicy yellowtail maki roll is my favorite roll, so I'm having that and the makoto house salad. the salad is big enough for a few people to split, but I love the dressing so much, I got it anyway! There are a lot of yummy, fresh dishes here to try. Always clean, great atmosphere with indoor/ outdoor seating and friendly service. It's great for people watching , too as it's on the top floor of the Bal Harbour shops! Don't be turned off by the fact that this restaurant is in a shopping center, believe me, it's classy , great quality food and many celebrities actually dine here because you can have your privacy.
Amazing food and service.
Our server was so kind and fun. We enjoyed everything. We tried spicy edamames, Crispy himachi, truffle salmon, wagyu carpaccio, octopus kabobs/pinchos, the salad wow! And dessert out of this world.
I came to the bal harbour shops and came across this gem.
I came during peak lunch time and it was definitely for a Thursday pretty packed. Love the relaxed ambience overlooking the mall. I sat outside by the bar and loved it. Very attentive wait staff which is great because I was there for lunch and in a hurry for work! I ordered the sushi bento box and the spicy tuna crispy rice. The spicy tuna crispy rice I think I wanted to eat 50 of them but sadly only came with 4. The bento box was great bang for your buck as I couldn't finish the meal. Fresh sushi and quick service made it a perfect lunch spot!
Makoto offers a delightful respite from shopping fatigue in
Makoto offers a delightful respite from shopping fatigue in Bal Harbour. With quick and attentive service, it's perfect for refueling. Their cocktails are crafted to perfection, setting the tone for a memorable dining experience. The crispy rice tuna makes for a tantalizing start, while the fire & ice oysters provide a unique twist, although the ice might not suit everyone's palate. The wagyu robata impresses with its juicy succulence, and the spicy scallop temaki adds a delicious kick to the meal.
Perfect place for lunch with friends.
Nice ambiance, food, and service, specially Maddy that always make us feel special.
Quick snack at Makoto when we landed.
The service and food is amazing. If you love oysters like I do, I would recommend it! The weather and ambiance was perfect at the bar. Oh not to mention the steak
1 word.
.. Amazing, the food was great! One of my favorite restaurants in Miami! I've been several times and they always get the job done
Wow! This was possibly the best Japanese restaurant I have
Wow! This was possibly the best Japanese restaurant I have ever gone to. From the super fresh sushi to the roasted cauliflower to start were so tasty. Then the main course of the Wagu beef that we cooked on the hot stone was terrific. The service was also outstanding!
The worst please skip it
We arrived at the restaurant with kids and a reservation . They made us wait for 35 min The service was terrible and the food was served cold after 40 minutes of waiting for the food to come .
Excellent
The food was excellent. Our server helped us do a little bit of everything and he did not disappoint. We told him we had only a hour to eat and he got everything out in time and we never felt rushed. Wonderful experience
