Quintonil Ciudad de México Reviews
Avoid Quintonil - Food Poisoning Incident and Disappointing Food
We recently dined at Quintonil on June 21st and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. Shortly after our meal, my wife, a friend, and I began experiencing severe symptoms of food poisoning, including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. Our previous meal was shared with two other friends who did not experience any symptoms, leading us to believe the cause of our illness was something we ate at Quintonil. After this incident, we reached out to Quintonil to inform them and seek an explanation. However, their response was dismissive and showed a lack of concern for our situation. To make matters worse, we later discovered several reviews online reporting similar cases of food poisoning at Quintonil. It is troubling that we were not aware of these reviews earlier, as they could have served as a crucial warning. Adding to our disappointment, the food itself was honestly underwhelming. Having dined at other high-end establishments, including the two-star Michelin restaurant Suhring, I can say that the quality at Quintonil does not justify the high price. The dishes lacked the exceptional taste and creativity we expected from a restaurant of this reputation. I strongly urge anyone considering dining at Quintonil to save their money and choose another restaurant. With so many outstanding dining options in Mexico City, it might be wise to select a venue that guarantees both a safe and memorable experience.
UNMATCHED
Extraordinary gastronomic experience. A menu of kings and impeccable service. Unmatched atmosphere. A place to return.
One of my best meals
One of my top 5 meals ever. Good variety in the menu, and a nice breadth of flavors. I was quite happy that the caviar didn't come out until the dessert course. Service was excellent as expected, they will keep you well watered.
Very nice innovative food experience, not a fine dining establishment
The food is truly innovative. 10 courses of simple bites each, yes bites not just small portions so, I recommend eating something before or after as you will definitely leave hungry, so you got there not to eat, and definitely not to dine, but to experience something completely new, genius, and indicative of edible art. The ambience is not inviting at all, no dress code, some in jeans, others in simple shirts, majority in street clothes few with smart casual. Temperature control is terrible. The really warm room made it very uncomfortable that I had to remove my dress jacket (which was a mistake to dress up). Very small place, can accommodate up to 47 persons. The wine pairing (only 7 different wines) very small service 1.5 to 2 ounce each as seen in my photos after pouring (remember the universal wine glass serving is 5 ounces). But the selection is perfect for the dishes. Yes, three to four sips for the one or two bites of the food serving. Service is good, nothing exceptional or top fine dining experience. Overall, you go there JUST FOR THE FOOD experience. Paying the steep price for it (1000 USD for two with wine pairing and tip). Rating: 5 out of 5 stars for food, 4 for service, 3 for ambience. Do I recommend it to fellow travelers and explorers, not necessarily. There are way, way… better dining places out there in Mexico City. I tried many of those and that I would definitely come back, but never back to Quintonil…. I do not care if it stay top 50 or number one best in the world.
Quintonil Mexico City sublime experience
Had the tasting menu…the food every course was delicious…the tasting menu was bold and inventive…I would definitely recommend any one visiting Mexico City make reservations…I will definitely return to try the new menu
Quintonil is very good, but not great
.This is a nice restaurant in Polanco. The service was fantastic and the food was very good. I would not say the food was great for the amount of money paid, as I have certainly had better at that price. I ate at the bar as you need two people to eat at the table, although I think the menu is almost the same. They are on the list of world's top 50 restaurants and I think that may be a stretch, but that is of course my opinion.
Miserable food poisoning
I felt very lucky to have scored a dinner reservation here on Valentine’s Day. I felt deceived as soon as we sat down, however, because the website had said that there were à la carte options, but the only option turned out to be a nine course tasting menu. I am skeptical of tasting menus, both for their pretentiousness, and for the fact that you’re hostage to whatever they want to give you. My partner and I shared everything except two dishes which, for some reason, repulsed her: a piece of fish, and a decomposed taco. Those two I ate. The fish tasted funny. No less than two hours after getting back to the hotel after this meal, which set me back about $1000, I got violently ill, with what is classic food poisoning. (As a physician, I’ve seen it one too many times.) Vomited seven times, diarrhea, fever. I got so sick that I had to cancel the business portion of my trip and pay an extra hefty sum to fly back home the next day.
Unforgettable world class dining in CDMX
We booked the bar - chef's counter experience and it was incredible from start to finish. Not only were the courses so carefully designed and executed, but the level of service and staff was unparalleled. We also requested the wine pairing which was exquisite. It was worth the treat on our vacation and will be a dining experience we'll never forget. Thank you to the entire team!
Culinary experience
I think this restaurant deserves to be one of the world’s top. The tasting menu was superb and incredibly varied and the dishes beautifully presented. The service was excellent and not overwhelming as in many restaurants of this calibre. Every dish was well explained and we did not feel rushed. I loved the fact that one is given a copy of the menu when leaving. Not cheap by Mexican standards, but reasonable by international ones.
Friends dinner
Best dinner ever! Wow, an explosion of flavors! Every dish was perfection. The service was amazing. Loved everything about this place!
Moctezuma's Revenge for US$800+
Where. Do. I. Start... For context, I have been to countless number of fine dining restaurants all over the world. From 3 Michelin Stars to those on top of the San Pellegrino 50 Best, I have done it all spanning the US, Europe, South America, and Asia. I have also been to Mexico City a few times before. So, it comes at great pain to write this review as it is the first and hopefully only one I will ever have to write of this nature. For additional context, we are both intermittent fasters. For those not familiar, that means we don't eat for between 16-20 hours. We have been doing this for years and it has been great for health. So, it should be of no surprise given Quintonil was offering a Tasting Menu only that we would not eat anything during the entire day in anticipation of the experience. Fast forward to the meal itself. I'm going to try and be objective here as the meal itself was very good. Some of the dishes were exceptional. The Kampachi was simply delicious as was the tamal and the lobster tartar. Having experience in what some would call adventurous (not us), we had no issues digging into the Festival of insects. These were tacos that involved fish made with an adobo of chapulines (grassshoppers), chorizo made from ants, and other Mexcan delicacies focused on insects. All in all, the meal was delightful and about what one would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. However... ...what ensued at 3 AM that next morning was something we were not expecting. Our 4 day trip to Mexico curated around visiting Quintonil and Pujol took a turn when my significant other got seriously sick. So much so I had to leave the hotel and head to a Pharmacy first thing in the morning to buy medication that would help. For additional context, he's also a doctor so he is more knowledgeable than most. Little did I know I too would be affected as I too started developing symptoms. Definitely milder than his, I too was off for the remainder of the trip. Things were so bad we had no choice but to cancel the reservations we had at Pujol that evening, a shame given the reservation was made 7 months in advance. The purpose of the trip completely written off. One could make a few arguments here as to it being "bad luck". I would agree, except both of us displaying the same symptoms is rather suspicious. We ate the exact same things at Quintonil. Remember, we had not eaten anything during the entire day except drink sealed imported bottled water and plenty of it. Could it have been we were not used to eating insects and that was it? Possible, but also unlikely given conscious or not, humans do ingest insects all the time unintentionally. It is part of eating fruits and vegetables. One of us getting sick would be one thing, but both of us and under those circumstances??? All in all, a ruined post dining experience, a cancelled reservation at Pujol made 7 months prior resulted in a ruined trip to the great Latin American capital that is Mexico City. Needless to say, we will be returning to Mexico City, but will skip Quintonil. I think there are better things we can spend our $800+ on. The Posh Elite Polanco Version of Moctezuma's Revenge is not one of them.
An incredible meal that I will remember forever!
This is one of the top 5 meals I have ever had. While it's not inexpensive, the food and the serve were incredible. I would highly recommend Quintonil for anyone that visits Mexico City and is looking for a gourmet meal that will be remembered forever.
Underwhelmed
A little unwhelmed given the hype and price. We ordered the tasting menu with wine pairing. The food is creative, the striped bass was well cooked and the special honey desert dish was very good. However, we felt that some dishes were over spiced and some under, and the wine pairing was really off. For example, one of us don't eat fish so he was given a dish of some potato preparation, but the sommelier gave him a glass of full bodied red from Mexico! Another dish has pasta with anchovy that's too salty, and it was paired with a light white which was completely overwhelmed by the dish. A comparably priced tasting dinner in the US would have better food and wine pairing.
Amazing.
Wow. Among the best, if not the best, meal I've ever had. Incredible flavors, attentive and nice staff without being obsequious (we never felt as if were in the movie The Menu). My wife and I at a mix of very high end and cheap eats places during our five nights in Mexico City. This was the high end place that was worth the price. Go here.
Beautiful Food in a Gorgeous Restaurant
I recently visited Quintonil and it was an amazing experience that included a tasting menu with a wine pairing. While I have done tasting menu’s before, I have not since my best friend has a wicked panic attack at The French Laundry (more on this, never) and after watching The Menu with Ralph Fiennes (the movie holds up a difficult mirror for gastronomy groupies). All that being said, I had to go. Right? It’s number 27 in THE WORLD. And yes the flavors live up to the hype. This restaurant is located in Mexico City and it is known for its riffs on Mexican cuisine. The ambiance of the restaurant is fantastic light and bright with tables not too close together. We opted for the seating at the bar so we could see the kitchen in action. Spanish and English are spoken (my elementary Spanish vocabulary was not forced into practice, desgraciadamente) equally well. I think there is AT LEAST a 1:1 ratio between staff and guest which is a bit overwhelming. And while I haven’t been there in decades, I was reminded of Alinea in the performative way dishes were presented. One aside, don’t miss the bathrooms- they smell amazing (not joking). Now, let's talk about the food. The dishes were elegant, creative, and delicious. The ingredients were fresh and locally sourced, much of the produce comes from a garden close to the restaurant. I highly recommend trying the tasting menu, which showcases the best dishes of the restaurant. Be sure to get the wine pairing as the wines are as complex as the food and very thoughtfully paired. The food was complex and creative- a butternut salad that tasted like buttery, carmelized goodness, but included blanched butternut squash and tomatoes or corn chawanmushi, uchepos foam, ikurriña, and vanilla oil (think salmon roe in custard with drops of vanilla added at service) all surprising and delicious. The dessert served with a pairing of pear cider was a crème fraiche ice cream topped with caviar and passion fruit. Okay, that was decadent. Overall, I had a wonderful experience at Quintonil. The food and the ambiance were exceptional. The restaurant deserves it’s standing on the list of the world’s best restaurants, absolutely. Personally, I have noted a change in my preferences for restaurants after a COVID. I want connection. I want a friendly staff that wants to engage with its clientele. I want the conversation within my dining and extending to the restaurant staff to be warm and meaningful. I am very lucky indeed to have been able to eat at Quintonil. The food was some of the best I have ever had. However, I wish that the connection with all of that staff could have been more natural and less performative (a small criticism due to the isolation brought on by the pandemic).
Reservation available for transfer
Hi...I have a reservation slot for two people on Thursday March 16, 2023 at 9:30pm at Quintonil if anyone out there is interested. Please do let me know.
Very nice dinner
Really nice tasting menu experience in a casual, unpretentious setting. Service is top notch. We couldn't get a reservation, but as luck would have it, we checked again online one last time before giving up and someone must have canceled because we got a last-minute reservation. We opted for the tasting menu with wine pairing. Only four stars because I didn't love every single item, but they were all delicious and wines were spot on. For example, I couldn't really taste the crab because the sauce overwhelmed it and oxtail wasn't tender enough for me. Highly recommended for a great foodie experience in CDMX.
This is THE SPOT for amazing cuisine in CDMX.
Get the kitchen bar if you can. It gets hot, but worth it to observe the extraordinary care and precision in execution for every dish. Quintonil is simply a triumph; a tour de force of Mexican cuisine. Highly memorable and well worth every penny. Bravo!
Flawless, Unpretentious Service: Food Doesn’t Live Up to the Staggering Price Point
Quintonil is a beautiful and unassuming spot, with flawless, friendly and unpretentious service. The food is inventive and interesting but for the staggering price point (even by NYC standards) I left disappointed (and hungry) with the overall dining experience. Of an 11 course tasting menu, the majority of the dishes featured fish or seafood products and very limited meat. I found several of the dishes “fishy” and/or over-sauced (especially a soft shell crab dish that looked delicious but was sauced so heavily the crab disappeared completely). There is always a risk of not liking dishes on a rigid tasting menu, but in this case, the dishes seemed very limited in their taste profiles, resulting in a number of dishes in a row that I didn’t really want to eat.
Noel Raimundo Decàn Review of Quintonil
Had great dinner at Quintonil in MX City, #8 among 50 Best restaurants in World. Started with small center of Romaine lettuce filled with bits of bacon, small capers, Parmesan cheese and Italian salad dressing: delicious! Main course was tenderloin center cut with Petitte potatoes & veggies. Steak was so tender it could be cut with spoon. Juicy and meaty taste. Paired with Carmenere red wine. On the side had small portion of Mole Madre with blue corn chips: taste of old Méjico. Service was excellent and friendly. Kindly allowed me a photo with Chef and 2 of his assistants . Quintonil deserves to be #8 of best 50 or even top five. Highly recommend to visit this fine restaurant.
Quintonil will be Mexico's first Michelin Starred Restaurant
Every dish at Quintonil was a visual and gastronomic delight. Our experience included four plates featuring insects that could not be seen or detected other than in the accompanying show-and-tell materials. Even the cloth napkins had an ant embroidered thereupon. The servers were professional, bilingual, and clearly enjoyed their professions. We enjoyed a cocktail, Quintonil Water, that included worm salt.
OVER PRICED and OVER RATED
This is the first review I have ever written. Our meal was such a disappointment that I felt obligated to warn people. We booked months in advance. Our group has travelled the world eating and drinking and we were unanimous in our assessment that this place is OVERRATED, OVERPRICED and Under Flavored. After arrival we waited 15 minutes before someone even came to our table. The food was bland and lacking creativity. The service was disorganized with lots of people standing around doing nothing when we needed more wine, water, etc. A few of the dishes were so unappealing that we did not eat them. This was the most expensive and worst food of our 4 dinners in CDMX-by far! Maybe in the past this was a go to place but now it is just milking it’s reputation. With so many great places to eat in CDMX, save your time and money.
Better every time
First visit after the pandemic. Very pleased with the evolution and creativity of the food. Amazing flavors, mixes and originality. Quite unique. Fir me the best in Mexico right now. Everything else simply perfect.
