Taira Sushi&Sake Garden Grove Reviews from The Last Year
My wife took me here for my birthday .
The omakase was fire and every single piece was so good! Especially loved the fatty cod and chutoro! The appetizer sampler was well balanced and my wife and I were surprised on how delicious the tomato was. Refreshing, umami, crunchy, refreshing. The dessert was delicious, not too sweet and the perfect ending to a great meal. So good. Chef Ben and Ayako were warm, attentive and nice and we feel so lucky to be able to have such an amazing meal there.
The best omakase place in the OC! Fresh seafood from all
The best omakase place in the OC! Fresh seafood from all over the world. Husband and wife owned and operated. Used the be Sushi Warrior but I'm glad this couple took over. Friendly and down to earth. We're definitely coming back here. The only downside is that you have to make a reservation far in advance and they're only open from 5 -10pm but that says a lot about the place.
This place is wonderful for the price, and probably closer
This place is wonderful for the price, and probably closer to a 4.5 but yelp doesn't allow for half star ratings. This lovely spot is truly a hole in the wall sushi establishment, and even more unusual is it's located in Garden Grove which isn't well known for higher end sushi. To dine here you have to make a reservation in advance, there are no walk ins. Taira is ran by a husband and wife duo, and in speaking with them they both met at Oki Doki in Tustin which was way too cute! The husband is the head sushi chef, and the wife takes care of the entire floor. They have an a la carte menu, and also offer an omakase at the bar. The prices for their omakase is extremely affordable, and great quality for the price. We got the 12 piece with appetizers, and didn't have a single bad bite. My favorite form the omakase was actually the octopus, it was extremely tender and brilliant soft but slightly crunchy texture that was different from other octopus I've had. My actual favorite piece from the entire meal was an extra order outside of the omakase, the Japanese mackerel. If you like Japanese mackerel, do not miss ordering this. I can tell the head chef takes a lot of care into his preparation and puts a lot of love into his mackerel preparation. Overall for comparison to all my other sushi lovers out there, this place I would say is a somewhat similar experience and quality of fish to Oshima pre ownership change. I think the fish quality falls between Otorro in Irvine and Oshima in Orange pre ownership change. It's definitely worth checking out. Is this going to be the absolute best omakase you'll ever have? It won't be, but if you're looking for a high quality omakase or dinner experience at an extremely affordable price point, this is 100% worth checking out. For all the locals at Garden Grove, you now have an amazing omakase spot on par with alot of good spots in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach.
Amazing!!!! From start to finish, my experience at this
Amazing!!!! From start to finish, my experience at this restaurant was nothing short of spectacular. The combination of impeccable service, outstanding sushi, and expertly crafted drinks created an unforgettable evening. I indulged in the 12-piece Omakase, and each piece was a testament to Ben's artistry with sushi and sashimi. His skill and dedication were evident in every bite, making it a true culinary delight. Ayako's service was exceptional--attentive and friendly, she made sure every aspect of our dining experience was perfect. Her warm and engaging personality added a wonderful personal touch. Together, Ben and Ayako created an atmosphere that was both welcoming and energetic, making me feel right at home. The ambiance of the restaurant was inviting, with a cozy and sophisticated vibe that enhanced the overall experience. The presentation of the dishes was exquisite, each one a visual and flavorful masterpiece. This was my first visit, and I can confidently say it won't be my last. I look forward to becoming a regular at this amazing establishment. Thank you, Ben and Ayako, for your incredible hospitality and for making my birthday truly special. You both turned an ordinary night into an extraordinary one. For anyone seeking an exceptional dining adventure with top-tier sushi and remarkable service, this is the place to be. Highly recommended!

Hidden gem in the heart of Koreatown, Orange County with a hand-written menu. The restaurant is run by 2 people, Japanese Chef Ben and wife Ayako. They were very attentive and welcoming. Called on a Monday and made reservations in advance for dinner. We just came back from Japan and were looking for an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant. This place hit the spot yet so close to home. It was a full house on a Tuesday night. We started dinner with house-made tapas (starters and izakaya): tomato pickles ($6), simmered beef tongue ($14) and grilled pork jowl ($9). The beef tongue just melts in your mouth -- surprisedly full of flavor and very delicious with wasabi. You can order omakase or a la carte. We went with the 10 piece omakase, every piece came with the perfect amount of rice. I can't wait to be back!!! 10 pieces omakase ($74pp): 1. black throat sea perch 2. amber jack 3. halibut from Jeju, Korea 4. scallop from Hokkaido, Japan 5. blue fin tuna from Mexico 6. golden eye snapper 7. ocean trout 8. black cod 9. sea urchin from Hokkaido, Japan 10. seared otoro fatty tuna with truffle oil
I have been waiting to try this place.
For the price of 12 pieces of Omakase, it was an excellent deal. The Tsumami dishes were all excellent and very delicious. Using truffle oil overpowered the natural flavors of the fish. I can't understand it.
Taira is quite the hidden gem for sushi enthusiasts seeking
Taira is quite the hidden gem for sushi enthusiasts seeking an exceptional omakase experience. From the moment you step in, the service sets the tone for an unforgettable dining experience. Take this from someone who has been here three times. Highlights of our meal included: - Sea Birch & Amberjack, offering a delightful start to the experience - Perfectly prepared Halibut & Chicken Grout - Melt-in-your-mouth Hokkaido Scallop & Golden Eye Snapper - Raw Octopus was different for me but it was still good nonetheless - Classic favorites that are 5 stars: Blue Fin Tuna and Ocean Trout - Seared Black Cod & Hokkaido Sea Urchin are sleeper pieces, so good - Grand finale of Otoro with truffle - actually illegal how good this piece was Every piece was nothing short of delicious, showcasing the freshest ingredients and expert preparation. As always, the service at Taira was top-notch, attentive without being intrusive, heavily recommend trying Taira if you're in the market for omakase. Remember to book in advance. Unfortunately, Taira does not offer walk-ins.
Pieces are smaller than other places but delicious.
Great service and amazing food! Will return

There aren't many omakase places around Garden Grove and although I've moved further away from the area, this is hands down the best sushi place within the proximity forsure. My friend took me here for my birthday and I enjoyed the omakase so much! Their appetizers were also good - I've never had beef tongue the way it's prepared here and I will probably get it every time here. Small little restaurant ran by a husband and wife. Husband's the sushi chef and his wife took our orders and helped everyone around the restaurant. It's very quaint and the ambiance is so nice and friendly. Super recommend coming here for good affordable omakase.
My fave omakase place in OC.
Every piece is flavorful and interesting. Warm personal service. Never been disappointed after multiple meals.
Best bang for your buck omakase sushi restaurant in the OC.
Fishes are from sources from all over the world, mainly from Japan. Great service
This place needs more reviews than what they currently have
This place needs more reviews than what they currently have because the food was delicious and the service was amazing! My fiance and i came here for dinner and we both ordered 2 of the 12 piece omakase + 2 appetizers set and beef tongue. The appetizers came with 4 different things. The sushi pieces were all fresh & yummy. There wasn't a single piece that was "meeeeh" in my opinion. The beef tongue was insanely tender. I thought the texture of it was going to throw me off considering it's beef tongue but it was sooooo good. It's ran by a husband and wife & i appreciate how they only take a certain amount of people at a time to ensure quality of the food & great service. Will be coming back!

We got a 8:30pm reservation! Dined at the bar in front of the chef. Ordered the following 1) omakase 12 piece - pieces are small but we ordered enough of the appetizers to fill our stomach, price is affordable! 2) monk fish liver - husband liked this!! 3) sea urchin tofu - the tofu was a bit stinky, not sure if that's how it should be? Urchin was good 4) beef tongue - yum, soft and delicate tasting 5) miso soup, there's a fish ball inside? 6) stewed egg plant - flavorful! 7) green tea chocolate cake x 2 - very dense and full of matcha flavor, melts in your mouth Chef is super friendly and wife is very busy serving everyone in the restaurant! It's only a two person team.
This is another hidden gem in Garden Grove.
First, service is super friendly from chef to servers. I feel like home when I first dined here. Second, the fish quality is perfectly melt in your mouth, fresh quality, unique taste. Very nice knife skill. Third, the ambiance might not be welcome when you walked in but as long the food is good, I don't mind at all. Will be back!
The BEST omakase restaurant we have been so far.
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here and it was amazing. Definitely will be coming back!
My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it was our
My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it was our first omakase EVER. I had never been so excited for a meal in my life. Taira is a little hidden gem in Garden Grove led by Chef Ben and his wife Ayako bringing amazing cuts of the freshest, high quality fish and more for so much cheaper than other omakases I've seen on social media. It's not a huge restaurant, but the smallness of it adds to the cozy and intimate experience that I feel that omakase needs. We sat at the bar and got to watch Chef Ben put together the nigiris and it was honestly a dream. We started with the appetizer set that featured a number of different appetizers like whelk, spinach, pickled tomato, eggplant, jellyfish, and steamed egg with uni. When you first hear about what you get, it doesn't particularly sound spectacular, but trust me, EVERY BITE blew me away. It speaks to amazing talent to turn simple things into flavor explosions. Please get this. At $85, this 12 course omakase was the most reasonably priced one I had ever heard of and just like the appetizers, EVERY BITE, was beyond flavorful. I was so sad when I finished my bite. I can't put it into words. Just go try it. We also got the roasted brown tea pudding and surprised me with a fruit tart for my birthday since my boyfriend mentioned it in the reservation. Chef Ben and Ayako were so sweet and they created such an amazing first omakase experience. We will 100% be going back and I can't wait to do so!
This is a reservation only restaurant, and I really liked
This is a reservation only restaurant, and I really liked the private atmosphere of the place. We got Omakase here, and the chef and waiters were all really nice. The biggest caveat here being the price. With omakase being 89, you potentially get good value given the selection of fish that was offered. But definitely a pricier and treat yourself kind of meal This review will be short - the fish quality was out of this world. I was constantly surprised by the selection of fish. For example, I generally do not like tuna due to it, being usually a rougher texture, but today, even though they only put soy sauce on it. They had chosen such a good selection of blue fin tuna/or prepared it so well that it was really soft and had great depth of flavor. Maybe I'm a tuna person now! Things I've never tried before I particularly liked the sour eggplant that they served.
Amazing quality food for great prices, no wonder they are
Amazing quality food for great prices, no wonder they are always booked. Not only was the 12 piece omakase delicious and creative, but the izakaya items we ordered were also a hit. The chicken wings were probably the best I've ever had. Eggplant and shishito peppers were also good. Definitely making this one of my must visits every time I'm back in SoCal to visit family.
great selection of fish and small plates.
family owned. very good service. biggest downside is for $$$$ the pieces of fish are small when you compare to other comparable places of quality/price.
Definitely deserve as a hidden gem.
Please make reservation and don't blame if you can't get a table for walk in. Family owned and very friendly atmosphere. They don't treat you as customer, they treat you as friend to hang out with them. You don't only get sashimi from Japan, but also korea and Norway, depends on seasons. The most seasoned fish is what you will get
