First time trying Abate Pizza, North Haven.
I usually drive 25 minutes, to Zuppardi's, Frisco's, Ernie's or Modern. We tried Abate's twice to be sure it's consistant, and the bacon. Mushroom/onion, pepperoni, or sausage pizzas were excellent! .
Be the first to ReplyWe love the Pizza here.
So glad they came to North Haven. Usually we have to go to several other towns to get good pizza. Not anymore!! You have to try it
Be the first to ReplyThe North Haven location is deceivingly small.
The majority of the building is the kitchen so the seating area is pretty small consisting of a bar along with a few high top tables and about half a dozen regular tables. I was disappointed in the flavor of the house dressing on the salad and the pane cotto had far more bread than escarole. The chicken parm and shrimp parm were unremarkable. I am happy they were finally able to reopen in some capacity and we will patronize again, in the future, to order pizza.

Wonderful old school vibe. And the apizza is remarkable. I ordered a cheese with fresh garlic and frankly, it was the best I've had. The service is great and there's plenty of parking. I give this new Abate's my highest recommendation. Easy five stars.
Be the first to ReplyFood is good and not pricey at all.
Pizza is ok. Our service was very good thanks to the young spanish lady there who was helping our server, who by the way, took his time to get the food. Ambiance is fine, small local place, we were visiting from Boston, no comparison there.
Be the first to ReplyI'm so glad Abate Apizza opened in North Haven.
We used to have to go to Wooster Square for authentic pizza. This time around, I did takeout and the new location is convenient. On a Friday evening, however, the parking lot fills up quickly. There was a line inside, but since I pre-ordered, I barely had to wait. The staff members were polite and professional. I didn't get to see much of the dining room, where a lot of staff were busily running around. The waiting area was clean and spacious enough. Abate is located in a house with flags tastefully hung around the porch. There's a sense of pride associated with this business. I ordered a bar-style mashed potato pizza and a pepperoni calzone. Three of us shared the meal, which ended up being filling. The mashed potato on the pizza was creamy and the bacon crispy. The calzone was fresh baked, dripping with cheese and pepperonis. The price was decent at $37 for the small pizza and the calzone. I plan on returning another time to try out more dishes.

I heard a lot of good things about Abates (New Haven Location). So I was looking forward to the New restaurant opening in North Haven. I will get straight to the point- no need to beat around the bush. This place is a dive. The specific area/ location is very low class and run down (despite their best intentions of remodeling- you cannot polish a turd). 61 State St. has been a dive bar/ motorcycle bar for 5 decades. You will be greeted by the same clientele. The staff: Including cooks, waitstaff, cashiers all have the same low class theme. Very dirty, very dumpy, unkempt (to say it mildly). If you decide to look past this low class area of town and place an order (I gave them not One, but TWO chances before I decided to post my review). The food is awful. I never, EVER had a pizza that tastes worse than Abates. I was surprised and disappointed. I waited a couple of weeks and tried again (hoping that maybe the first was a fluke or something had gone terribly wrong). Unfortunately, NO. The pizza was horrible. How can Anyone make a BAD PIZZA? Let's face it- it's not difficult to make a good pie. Even at home in our own brick oven! *Food Terrible *Location Terrible *Staff Terrible, Dirty, Low Class *Clientele beneath socioeconomic standards *Parking Terrible- I watched as an employee squeezed her rusted, primed, old junk pick up truck next to my Porsche 911 GT3. Only to find out after I ate a few bites of food that I had a nice dent and scratch on my door. No, I did not complain. * Hint to the Owner: The customer who complains wants to return to your establishment. The customer who does not complain will never return and will tell 10 people about their negative experience. Those 10 people will tell 10 more. So on and so forth. Dear Owner, you are NOT in New Haven. You are in North Haven. Standards are Higher. Pick up your game or go back to New Haven.

I met up with friends who live just a hop skip and a jump away from the new North Haven location. There is plenty of parking in the lot. I ordered a garden salad with Italian dressing. It was a good size and had a variety of veggies and what seemed like homemade croutons. I also ordered a chix Parm sub which was large. The bread was crunchy, the cutlets moist, the sauce very good and there was just the right amount of cheese. My friends loved their pizzas. Our waiter was very efficient and friendly. The restrooms were very clean. There is a bar area, but we were told no alcohol could be served until they received their liquor license. I did see a few people BYOB. The place was clean, and the menu has a great variety to choose from and the prices are reasonable. I would return again if in the area and give it a 3.5.

I used to love to go to Abates when it was on Wooster Square. I ordered yesterday of wrap and some mozzarella bread. However, today I had to wait over 45 minutes for a cheese pizza. I was told it's only gonna be a couple more minutes and I went back into the restaurant three times. No manager around and not even a concession was made. Very very disappointing. I most likely will not come back.

Best pizza on Wooster Street, currently relocated to North Haven. Never a line; while a couple of doors down all the tourists stand in line for pizza that's nothing like it used to be.
Be the first to ReplyPizza is good - typical New Haven style.
If you crave Pepe's or Sally's and don't want to wait in lines , this is a good alternative. Just don't expect great, friendly service. We waited at the door 10 mins without being acknowledged as staff walked by. Staff just seemed annoyed and were inefficient.

The toppings on their pizza (abate special and clam with white sauce) were great but the dough itself was soggy. The only crispy part was the very thin edge on the outside. The fried calamari was light and airy, very good. The stuffed mushrooms were just okay, I wouldn't order them again. The service was nice in the midst of a busy lunch time on a holiday.

I went into the takeout counter and they had a special on slices, buy one get one free. I got just mozzarella slices. The pizza is a good pizza compared to others in the country but since you are located on Wooster St, compared to other New Haven Style pizza there are better ones so you might as well go down the street to some other ones.

I took my friend (visiting from another country) and my mom to try New Haven style pizza. I wanted to take them to Modern but it didn't open until 3pm and we wanted more time to explore New Haven and Yale. It was my first time at Abate's too. Two pm and the restaurant was not full. We asked for a table outside. We were warned that service would take longer because they are short staffed and there are only 2 servers outside. So we decided to sit inside. We placed our orders (3 small pizzas and broccoli rabe, 2 rootbeers). The drinks and the broccoli rabe came it within 15 minutes. But not the pizzas. Two tables who arrived later than us got their orders (pizzas) ahead of us. I pointed this out to another server and followed up on our pizzas. I didn't really get an explanation as to what happened and the orders came out shortly after. From being seated to getting our pizzas, we waited an hour. Yes, of course, at one point, I started looking at my watch. I asked for the check and some boxes while we were still eating because I saw the other table sitting a long time with their payment before someone came around to collect it.The food was delicious. I don't think you need to wait an hour for it.

This is a hidden gem opened it up next to two quite popular pizza restaurants. We had a group of six and everyone enjoyed this restaurant for a different reason! Kristin our service was absolutely amazing, accommodating and sweet! We enjoyed three different kinds of pizzas, salad, spinach with garlic and oil. The clam pizza was some thing we had never tried before but was honestly, the best pizza we have ever had! The Sicilian pizza was excellent as well, it had a tinge of garlic on the crust and the dough was nice and fresh and thick! We also had another thin crust pizza that was perfectly cooked, seasoned and delicious! We could not have asked for more!

Stumbled upon this pizza place after trying to go to Pepe's but they were closed. Sally's had a 2 hour wait so we took a chance on Abate's. They were extremely busy. We were not disappointed! Staff was super friendly, attentive and accommodating. We had a meat lover's pizza and a pepperoni & mushroom pizza. The meat lover's pizza had the perfect amount of meat. Both pizzas were hot & delicious! We think we actually like it better than Pepe's. So happy we came upon this restaurant. Great staff and pizza. Win win! We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyGood New Haven pizza on Wooster St in New Haven.
No waiting like Sally's and Pepe's.
Be the first to ReplyI have never had a problem with the food it was alway
I have never had a problem with the food it was alway delicious and great quantity. However last night i ordered clam strip dinner delivery 45 minutes later my driver calls me and bring food said they forgot to give him my salad and he would go back for it i told him that it was ok not to bother. So i go to eat the food and theres no condiments and the portion was so small it was like 10 clam strips and a bunch of suggy fries. So i called driver back and he nicely brought the salad and condiments to me. I am just very disappointed in Abates. The driver was great though.
Be the first to ReplyI have been to Sally's, Pepe's, and Modern-the considered
I have been to Sally's, Pepe's, and Modern-the considered classics of NH pizza. I love all 3.My friend suggested we meet at Abate for pizza and avoid long wait times...sure thing as I had never been and was curious to try.Wooster St parking is always a nightmare and Abate's lot was full, but luckily found a spot on side street after 20 mins. Expected the place to be packed, but not the case. Beers and pizzas ordered. Crumbled sausage with onions and peppers on half, cheese other. Solely cheese for other.Sausage, pepper, onion ok; pepper chunks overwhelming and pizza lacking in sauce. Cheese side was better and good, but not better than what I could get nearby where I live. Service was adequate at best and place was dead by 9p.m. Dead. The whole experience was just eh. So it is no wonder to me why this establishment is not the place to go.If you just want an o.k.pizza, you may be satisfied. If this is your first time trying NH pizza, go to any of the aforementioned 3, as Abate's should not be your baseline or initial impression.
Be the first to ReplyI love the place and go there frequently.
The neighborhood is lucky to have the restaurant as a neighbor. They deserve kudos!!!!!!

Be the first to ReplyExcellent pizza.
Dough was consistent and sauce/cheese were good. We'll be back next time through here.
Be the first to ReplyIf I could give this negative stars I would.
We're from out of town, wanted a good bite to eat and barstool gives this a 6.8. Food was good, service was horrendous. You'd think I walked in the servers house and shit on the floor. No greeting, horrible attitude, drinks were wrong.... In the end he took his sweet time just getting my check and mumbled the entire time. We asked if they had a drink menu for wine and he just said "no". No additional information. Literally shit.

Tonight 22 of us had a meeting of our Morris Cove Garden Club. We met for dinner at Abate. It was a fun night with terrific food and fantastic staff, especially our server Jim. We pre-ordered but for some reason some people switched their orders tonight. The kitchen staff could have freaked out but they didn't; they made it work. We started with family style salads which were great. I thought everybody was going to fill up because people were having seconds and thirds along with homemade bread. Next was Penne alla Vodka. The penne was perfectly Al Dente and the sauce was light and so delicious ... again people were having seconds and thirds!! Then everybody had their Entre which was either steak, chicken marsala, stuffed shrimp or veal. My steak was cooked exactly as I wanted it. My baked potato was perfect. Dessert was an assortment of housemade cannolis and Italian cookies. I mean it sounds like I'm making this up, but I'm not. We had SUCH a good time that I forgot to take photos of the food! I'm stuffed... Did I mention seconds and thirds. Yeah... STUFFED!
Be the first to ReplyWe made an outdoor reservation for Saturday night date
We made an outdoor reservation for Saturday night date night at Abate and were seated promptly. The menu is large and contains many Italian and seafood offerings in addition to pizza. When glancing around the outdoor patio, we noticed how popular the fried seafood entrees were. We decided to stick to pizza, we added sausage to the Connie Special and loved the combination of fresh spinach, ricotta, and roasted red peppers. The Greek salad was massive, definitely large enough to serve four people. To our liking our salad was topped with an abundance of feta cheese. Our waitress, Raven, was friendly and attentive. Overall we were pleased by our experience at Abate and were happy to be able to try another eatery on Wooster Street.
