Airds Hotel and Restaurant Appin Reviews from The Last Year
Magic two days in Appin
Stayed in mid April in a super suite facing the loch overlooking the hotel garden. Lovely decor and modern furnishings making it a really comfortable suite. A lot of refurbishment has been completed recently and the hotel is spotless. The staff were friendly, efficient and really helpful in all respects. We ate dinner on both evenings in the nice dining room with outstanding views across the loch to the mountains beyond. The food was terrific and beautifully presented. Service was exceptional. Breakfast also was excellent with high quality cooked fare on offer as well as continental dishes. There is small snug bar and two very comfortable guest lounges with a real fire lit in the evenings. All in all a thoroughly good experience with good memories. Look forward to revisiting.
Hidden gem
Wow wow wow what can we say about Airds hotel Port Appin a hidden gem in beautiful surroundings. The staff make this place a 5 star visit nothing is too much of a bother. Both Carolyn and Calum go above and beyond and they make the stay extra special. Nothing to fault here, spotless, great locally sourced food, homely atmosphere with open fire and well stocked bar.
Disappointing
First thing to say is Carolyn, the manager is a really nice and helpful person. However, on our 2 night stay, given to us a wedding present, she was badly let down by her staff. Initially, all was well, very friendly reception on arrival, room a little small and tired but didn't plan on spending a lot of time there so not a major issue. Had dinner each night, were on an itison deal so had a £90 budget each night, which seemed reasonable given the menu prices. First night was fine, second night there was mix up with one of meals which was apologised for and rectified. Big drama started on our morning of departure, 30th March 2024. Went for breakfast at 8.30, window was 8 till 10. Was met with a feeling of being on the Marie Celeste, no staff anywhere to be found in the hotel! Eventually at 9.10 the aforementioned duty manager turned up and did an absolutely sterling job of trying to give some sort of level of service. However, still took an hour to get food which was at best could be described as average. At this point it felt like full on faulty Towers. On departure we did get some money off the completely confusing bill which would take a qualified accountant to interpret. Also, prices on the menu didn't seem to match the invoiced prices and no option was given to pay for drinks in the bar. This place could be so much better but under the current owners I think their fate is only on a downward trajectory. Given the choice, I would choose somewhere else in Port Appin near the Pier.
Don’t go there.
Travelled 4hrs to celebrate my husband’s 50th. The Wellington was inedible, the Cullen Skink made my son and I sick and there was no hot water. The manager didn’t apologise and we received no compensation. I am so sorry we went there as my husband’s 50th was ruined.
Disappointing.
We went for dinner whilst staying locally and I have to say it was a disappointing experience. The food was fairly average. We had a very nice table looking out onto the Loch but the dining room is rather cold and stark in atmosphere and needs a revamp. Service was so so. Reasonably efficient but it was not friendly and we were irritated by having plates cleared whilst still one of the party was eating. We ate twice at the Pierhouse which is far superior and I would imagine much better to stay at.
Very different from previous stay!
2nd time to stay here (previously September 2021, just after ‘lockdown’) Previously loved the rural setting & attention to detail in the hotel. Food & accommodation was previously their ‘KSP’ Gourmet weekend with tasting menus on both nights, highlighting accommodation & champagne in your room (premium add on, which we were more than happy to arrange!) This visit, nice Bistro style food, well presented & absolutely fine. Yes, we were on an an ‘Itison deal’ this time but it was definitely not any less than what we paid before! Room was very tired looking, deck area not cleaned or swept (yes, we did have lovely weather on day 1 when we could sit outside!) chairs on deck area had lots of moss & algae, therefore we were unable to enjoy the experience without clearing the chairs. (Attention to detail). Room was not cleaned on day 2, coffee cups were washed but bed or towels not replenished & used champagne glasses not removed! ( again, it is attention to detail) Day 2, no staff in hotel for breakfast at 9am! (Breakfast is 8-10am), however, we have to applaud the manager for turning up after a phone call to the emergency phone number, he did startto prepare breakfast for all the guests waiting in the dining room & deal with a gas cut off! Rubbish happens! 😳 we certainly appreciated your efforts 👍 We are really sorry we didn’t get the wonderful waitress/Manageress????name that ensured everyone had tea/coffee in a very professional manner. This is a lovely venue & could certainly attract attract a a regular clientele looking for excellent food & service, just a wee heads up for new owners in a very difficult time for hospitality! Yes, we did ask for the service charge to be removed from our bill, we felt it was justified as the hotel did not deliver the level of service that we expected for the price or on our previous experience! Please, just
Even Dick Turpin wore a mask!
Pros .. comfy bed. Cons ..ROBBED for 2 rounds of drinks! Unjustifiable at almost £42 for 2 gin/ ginger ales and 2 small Thistly Cross cider. I'd asked to pay the round but was told no card machine in the bar and drink would be charged at check out!
Over night stay
We stayed for one night. Upon arrival were taken to our room, which is spotlessly clean although a little dated the bed was extremely comfortable. We had dinner which was outstanding the wine selection was large albeit slightly expensive. Breakfast again was amazing presented well. All the staff were helpful and very pleasant. Overall a very pleasant stay and would not hesitate to return.
View to die for.
Perfect setting in a cove. Fairly isolated but there is a village shop.Lovely room with a lovely Loch/sea view. It appeared to have been recently renovated, very clean and fresh. Superb food and service, local beer available by the bottle. Hope to return soon.
Welcoming Boutique experience
Comfortable modern hotel. Helpful staff. Good Dining. We spent two nights in this relaxed atmosphere. Lovely breakfasts. I had Kippers and Funan Haddock and loved them both. Venison Wellington for Dinner was beautifully prepared and tasted delicious. The staff were kind and helpful. We enjoyed lovely walks and spectacular scenery. Would suggest that this is not the place for folks looking for 20th Century decor or have unrealistic expectations about Hotel Service in the modern age. Airds House has moved with the times to be a comfortable Boutique Hotel.
Anniversary Trip
We enjoyed a glorious stay on our way from Aberdeen to Mull. The food was amazing and the staff attentive. (Loved the options for breakfast. :-) ) Well worth taking the time off the beaten track. Thank you.
West coast gem!
What a gem. Great location with staff who were very friendly, professional and attentive. Food was delicious. A lovely example of West Coast Highland charm. The views around Port Appin are beautiful Great gateway to Glen Coe and travel south to Oban.
Very disappointing and unprofessional.
We booked the Airds Hotel way back in February this year for a much needed four night break in October. We chose it primarily because at the time it was listed as a Relais and Chateaux hotel. We have stayed in these many times over the last thirty years and they have always been of an excellent standard. We also looked at reviews and the website which promised in the Food and Drink section, (and still does) 'a restaurant style which embodies crisp, white tablecloths, fresh flowers and a romantic candle-light atmosphere and offering an a' la carte menu specializing in producing the best of local Scottish seafood'. We made it clear on booking that we were Relais and Chateaux loyalty scheme guests. We were rather surprised to be asked to pay the bill in full on booking but felt that we could do so being able to rely on its standard as a Relais and Chateaux establishment. On arrival the hotel had a rather neglected appearance from the outside and we entered through a glass porch with a dirty, broken glass roof. Consequently, we were not surprised to see the absence of a Relais and Chateaux plaque. It was no longer a member of this group although we had not been advised. The restaurant did not fit the website description at all but was more like a bistro with small. wooden tables and a rather cold ambience. The acting manager, Sean, showed us to our room. It had a wonderful view but otherwise it was very disappointing. Two light bulbs were out in the ceiling - one in the bedroom and one in the bathroom over the sink which made that end of the bathroom quite dark. The bathroom carpet and curtains were quite grubby, the hem was hanging down on one of the curtains and there was black mould around the bath. The chest of drawers in the bedroom had two knobs missing with two large screws left sticking out and the TV did not work! We mentioned the missing bulbs and TV that first evening to Sean who said they would be fixed the next day. Despite reminders, they were still not replaced when we left four days later. He said the absence of TV reception was due to poor weather. Housekeeping was very poor. On the Tuesday our dirty cups, glasses and a jug of milk, which had gone off, were not removed from our room and an empty tissue box was not refilled. On the Wednesday our bed was not even made and on the Thursday our bins were emptied but the rubbish bag was left in our bathroom. All these incidents were mentioned to reception at the time. On the Tuesday we asked to have a meeting with Sean to give him our feedback and he met us on the Wednesday morning. He listened patiently, and with agreement and understanding, to our complaints. We never asked for compensation but merely wished to give feedback and express our opinion that our room was most certainly not worth £265 per night, However, Sean kindly offered us a refund, which he felt was warranted, and we appreciated this, believing it was a professional and appropriate response. He said he hoped to get back to us that day although it could take a little longer as he had to get authorization from the owners. (He also said that he didn't now think the TV could be the result of the weather but it could be fixed very quickly. It wasn't! Fed up with not having a TV, my husband fixed it himself on our last evening). Sean was not in again before we left on the Friday. We tried to contact him many times subsequently and spoke to him on 7 occasions as we felt his promise of an unrequested refund should be honoured. Each time we were told that the matter was still in hand but he never rang back as promised on each occasion. Eventually, after being at home for 5 weeks, we have been offered a modest refund of £100. Sean explained that this was £50 per night but we pointed out that we stayed for 4 nights so it was only £25 per night. We still paid £240 per night for a room which was definitely not worth that for its level of quality and service but we, reluctantly, decided not to pursue the matter further having waited 5 weeks to get to this stage! Airds did not live up to its promise as a luxury hotel and the 'new' owners appear to be very removed from its day to day running. Their focus seems to be on future refurbishment and investment rather than on the satisfaction of their present clientele. A very disappointing ending to a disappointing episode!
Delightful place to stay and eat
Beautiful small hotel with amazing views in a peaceful setting. We had a wonderful stay, with the restaurant being a particular highlight. Dinner was very special, with friendly service and the best food of our trip in Scotland. Breakfast was also spectacular, even the haggis was delicious.
pretty setting, lovely staff
We stayed here sort of by default - most places in the the surrounding area were fully booked - and we liked it so much. The staff was really lovely and they had a smoked fish and egg breakfast that my husband and our daughter said was one of the best things they ate in all of Scotland (and we ate well!). The rooms are nothing special, but comfortable. The shower had good water pressure and there is a pretty lawn out front.
We'd happily stay here again
We stayed in room 5 for one night in early September 2023, and dined in the restaurant. What we expected was a comfortable restaurant with rooms, in a nice location, with excellent cooking. And that's exactly what we got. The price and the product were in line with the many other places we've stayed at in this sector of the hospitality market. I don't often write reviews but our experience was so at odds with some recent adverse reviews on Trip Advisor that I've made an exception. We enjoyed our stay, we would have no hesitation in booking again if we are in the Oban area, and we have already recommended Airds to some of our friends.
Go elsewhere CAMPING is better and cleaner
WARNING Clearly any high ratings are from a time passed long ago. Perhaps even the glasses thrown across the front lawn and shattered table was indicative of what the inside would present.. The place was filthy. Moldy dirty floor - carpet none the less. There was no service. No one responded. The tub was backed up - the staff didn’t care. There was black mold on the fixtures and tile. Relais Château you dropped the ball here and we won’t use you for booking as this experience was was AWFUL. We saw this same sort of comment for a New Zealand property and we know to RUN. It was such we were scared to touch anything for filth. This place was so bad they gave less to eat each day for breakfast. We travel 80 % of the year so we have a sense of expectations. The chef was decent for the evening and hopefully he can end up in a more worthy place.
Lovely hotel, great room, very comfy bed
Stayed just for one night. Loved it. Never been before (so glad I didnt read some of the reviews which seem to be comparing the hotel to what it was like 30 years ago, and yes everywhere had more staff then!). Our room (room 1) was lovely, well decorated, fantastic views of the loch, great bathroom, very comfy bed and good facilities. And a real bonus for us that they take dogs. We already had lunch so did not eat in the restaurant but breakfast was good. On prices - we have noticed an increase everywhere so not cheap (for us) but the night before we spent over £150 on a Premier Inn (nothing wrong with that place either!). Staff very welcoming, and would highly recommend. Would definitely stay again if in this stunning part of the world.

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.

I have a similar question, it seems like when money is refunded it doesnt go immediately what is the process of this since its essentially a debit card and not a credit card
