Best sushi place i've ever had so far.
I called them on Thursday noon and luckily they had one reservation open at 5pm the same day. Their sashimi is so fresh that you can taste the sweetness in each piece. The lady and her husband were very nice, unlike most of the review i've read on yelp. But i'd suggest call before hand for reservation because the place is quite small, so it's understandable that they turn down some walk-ins.
Be the first to ReplyWe had an amazing experience here tonight.
I did a deep dive on the reviews for this place and was a little hesitant to try and get a reservation for the next day.I know some people say it can be almost impossible to get in. However, I called only once yesterday to make a Friday reservation for tonight and was able to get it reserved no problem. She was kind when she answered and told me all of the times available when I asked. My fiancรฉ and I showed up an hour early on accident and they still seated us right away. The chef was having friendly conversation with regulars at the sushi bar and there was pleasant chatter, not silent like I have seen in other reviews. I have never had such fresh tasting fresh. Even the rice was delicious. We ordered the chirashi bowl, toro, uni, and scallop of the specials board. The toro was SO GOOD, we ate it up before I could take a picture. Overall, I will definitely be back. Such a wonderful experience.

Plenty of a eating available. Turned away at door by staff who asked me what I wanted (at a restaurant?!?) and when I asked for a table or the bar said, "No. we're waiting on 6:30." Rude and disrespectful.

Really good Food and Service! We came in with two adults and two children. Not many other people when we got there but more trickled in, and the service never suffered. Always asking for refills, how things were, and very friendly to our kids!We ordered a bunch of different items including the steamed clams with garlic butter, steamed egg with mushrooms and shrimp, Negi Toro hand roll, fried Monterey squid, uni sushi, hamachi roll, octopus sushi and tokujyo Sashimi. Everything was very tasty. Kids loved their food and they had about half my Sashimi platter. Room was small and cozy. Overall great place. New favorite in Carmel for sure!
Be the first to Reply-5 stars very rude very unwelcoming.
We we ignored when entered the very small (capacity of 20 at best) restaurant. When we asked to make a reservation we were immediately told No and were laughed at by local patrons. This happened to us two years in a row. You can try calling to make a reservation, but they don't answer the phone. If your eating inside you will not hear the phone ring either. Its like a library in there. This is a whisper only environment. Due to being treated so poorly, that was our last attempt to eat here. We will find another Sushi bar to support.

THE best spider roll I have had in the world! The sushi chef is the Japanese version of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi. The staff are nearly mute, and the Japanese server appears to have battered woman syndrome. The food is top notch but the attitude of the chef and the robotic servers ruins the experience. Too bad.

Sushi rice tasted authentic (which is hard to find) and the fish was properly sliced. The fish was diverse on the chirashi. We called ahead and made a reservation just in case.

Totally brought me back to Japan. We are dining there again in less than two weeks. Can't wait!!!

Quick take: unique experience If you are looking for a unique experience, then this is it.Trying to make a reservation was a task. Reading other Yelper reviews we already knew to keep trying until our attempts were answered. Once we reached a live person we were able to make a dinner reservation for a Tuesday night. Once we made the reservation the person on the other end just hangs up and ends the call. Also, knew this from reading other Yelp reviews. The restaurant is located inside a very unassuming building. No signage, name, or anything on the windows. Once inside we waited to be seated. Service was nice and efficient.A lot of regulars dine here. Seems like the owners closer the restaurant during the holidays and recently returned to work. The tempura was really good. We ordered the chirashi and it had a good variety of sashimi. We ordered a roll and saba. Very full from what we ordered. Fish was very fresh. Quality is pretty good.
Be the first to ReplyBest sushi around, some stellar sake, and great ambiance.
To all the haters, plan ahead and get reservations. Its not that hard. We did and were seated immediately. Our food and service was really good, so as long as you don't act like the typical LA snob expecting to walk-in without a reservation and be catered to, get over yourself.

We called to make a reservation but they told us First Come First Serve. However, once we got there, the chef and waitress told us they were fully booked tonight. It's totally nonsense!
Be the first to ReplyThis is a racist establishment.
Rude customer service. I wouldn't bother with them at all. Especially if you are POC.
Be the first to ReplyThe uni redefined what uni should be.
Same for the toro. Understated elegance and amazing, high quality fish. Would go every week if we could.

The quality of the seafood that is purchased here is something- as far as talk of the town of Carmel- all the restaurants who care about quality follow... in the sense that whatever and wherever is purchased by Akaoni- the other restaurants that also want quality seafood- follow the purchasing practices on a weekly basis. GIVEN, the wife of the Japanese owner/ sushi chef who guides you to the table seems to have NO investment in being charming, but after a while you will come to see this as an ironic part of the charm...

This is for sure the BEST sushi in Carmel! We sat at the sushi bar and the chef was very friendly when we came in. Two other staff were also very friendly and prompt. We started with the homemade tofu dish- wow! This was soft as a cloud and the sauce with it was very tasty. We ordered shrimp tempura roll which was one of best rolls I've had. Next was sushi: wild salmon sushi, hamachi, halibut, snapper. The fish was extremely fresh and oh so soft. The slices are cut to perfection and there was not too much rice. Also tried the hamachi roll- which was basic roll but still good. We ended with a vanilla mochi ice cream and it was delicious and refreshing. This is a small place with only a few tables and small sushi bar- but we love that about this place. So personal- and attentive service. Just make sure to make a reservation due to the size of the place.
Be the first to ReplyThis was a nice authentic Japanese sushi experience.
The quality of the fish was good, and the prices were a little higher than the average sushi restaurant. The restaurant is super small so everyone keeps their voices down, and there is a $30 minimum requirement per person when eating here.

This place is EXCELLENT! This place is pretty much reservation only so make sure to call in advanced as we watched quite a few people get turned away :( They also have lunch hours on a few days of the week but I cant recall when. The fish was very fresh and the quality was fantastic. Waiter was very polite and kept my water topped off. Definitely worth the price and checking out if you're at Carmel by the sea and craving quality sushi.

Hands down the best sushi in the tri county area, if you are looking for authentic Japanese style sushi, think nigiri and traditional rolls. No firecracker or rainbow rolls here thankfully! But you want a crab roll with amazingly fresh Dungeness crab not imitation kanikama this is the spot. I've been going here for years but apparently they've been gaining in notoriety lately. The interior reminds me of many good places in Japan, simplistic minimal and efficient. The service is good, straightforward not overbearing, the master is warm, friendly and engaging when time permits. The miso soup with clams, the grilled kanpachi collar, Dungeness crab roll (if available) are all worth trying. All of the nigiri are expertly crafted perfect ratio of rice to fish, the rice is seasoned very well, not over compressed. Expect to spend money but it's well worth it.
Be the first to ReplyBest Japanese food you can get around Monterey area, period.
Try anything other than the standard sushi, sashimi and tempura, you'll be amazed. Staff are not the most enthusiastic, sure (the Japanese lady is a bit stern), but I don't mind that at all.

Hands down THE best food experience! I did the Omakase dinner (you need to book ahead) and this is one food experience that I will think about for years to come. Everything I ate was delicious... the fish was fresh and melts in your mouth. Everything was 100%. If you ever find yourself in Carmel, make sure you reserve a table at Akaoni. If you can, I highly recommend you do the Omakase dinner. I spent about $200 total with tip and I will gladly spend that much again when I go back to Carmel. The owner and sushi chef was a delight! He explained every single dish that I ate and shared the coolest stories about his training in Japan and his experiences owning a restaurant in Carmel. I was fortunate enough to be able to watch him make every single dish -- all works of art! I love Akaoni and will definitely be back!

Be the first to ReplySadly, I had a similar experience as some of the reviewers
Sadly, I had a similar experience as some of the reviewers and did not get to try the food there. I was very much looking forward to it as the food is highly rated. My friend and I came in at 6pm to a restaurant with only four people seated. The waitress actually looked us over, up and down, and told us they had no tables. Upon inquiring further, she told us that all tables were reserved and nothing was available until after 8pm. Her vibe and the experience really felt so awful that it took away any desire to patronize this restaurant no matter how wonderful the food. That was a first for me.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent fresh fish served in a traditional setting.
Dour, unsmiling sushi chef who maintains his composure-unsmiling, unemotional-"judge me by my presentation and the quality of what I serve you, NOT my personality". Small venue, reservations required, excellent service. This was the best sushi experience we have had in the Monterey Bay Area in 20 plus years.
