Excellent lunch
We had an excellent lunch at Akita. Beautifully presented. Delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. All in all a good experience in nice surroundings.
Be the first to ReplySpecial occasion family of 4 lunch
We booked a table a couple of weeks before our visit and were really looking forward to it. The restaurant is set up well and looks good. We ordered two bento boxes and two mixed dishes that included small bento and a hot meal in a bowl. Strangely one bowl dish arrived before anything else and we waited at least 15/20minutes for the remaining order to arrive, then two bento boxes arrived and another 5min later the fourth dish arrived. The remaining small bento that accompanied the first dish came at least 20 minutes later. This delay really spoiled our whole experience. We just couldnโt enjoy it. The staff were apologetic and gave us a ยฃ10 off our bill at the end (we paid ยฃ35/45 per dish, with drinks a total of about ยฃ180) but we just wanted a special meal together. Overall the food was good, but was spoiled, unfortunately. We noticed that other tables also had the same problem where couples were being served at different times, but a table next to us had numerous courses coming at the same time, very frustrating.
Be the first to ReplySuperb Japanese restaurant with a stylish Japanese store attached...
My partner & I visited Japan House and its restaurant - 'Akira' - for the first time on Friday 24.06.2022 and we were very impressed by both. The items in the store (ground level) showed off Japanese craftsmanship at a very high level, were superbly made and very impressive. The same could also be said of the excellent Japanese restaurant on the first floor. We didn't make a booking and, as all the tables were booked (lunchtime at 12:30pm) we were offered very comfortable seats at the bar. Later, though, a table in the main restaurant became available and we were shown to it. So that was a very good start. This was our first taste of Japanese food and we went for the Sushi Bento Box and Bento Box (ยฃ40 each) (there seemed to be only a slight difference between the two) but they were huge, containing about 20 different suchi. All were fresh as can be and delicious. We both had dessert. Washed down with two glasses of an excellent Sauvignon Blanc, with 12.5% service charge, the total bill was ยฃ133.88. In my opinion, for a Michelin star restaurant (which 'Akira' is) it was well worth it and we look forward to a return visit in the not-to-distant future. Well done 'Akira' for a superb restaurant, food and especially the service.

It was my first time eating solo I was seating next to the counter so I could see the chefs working hard. I ordered the akira bento and it was divine. So many little dishes with different flavours. I hope to go back soon
Be the first to ReplyHalf price Bento Box offer & even then I am complaining โฆ
Dreadful food. Good service & nice setting but dreadful food. Even at half price I would not go again. Deep fried and rubbery chicken in Bento Box. Nothing particularly great. Left an unpleasant taste in our mouths. Waste of money in a nice setting.
Be the first to ReplyOur number one Japanese restaurant in London
Akira is without doubt our absolutely favourite Japanese restaurant in London. Are used to go there a lot from when they first opened but had not been back since Covid and we are thrilled that the place has not changed at all! It is still as awesome as ever! The food is absolutely exquisite and it is served on artisan tableware which is so beautiful. The Bento boxes are amazing as is basically everything weโve ever tried there. The service is impeccable and the manager Robert is utterly charming- so welcoming and attentive.
We are gluten and dairy free and they are always happy to adapt anything to suit oneโs preferences. All in all we thoroughly recommend Akira.
Stunning food! Immersed in Japanese culture! 9.4/10
The whole of Japan House is worth a visit and is home to traditional Japanese culture presented through different mediums such as the exhibitions downstairs, the items shown in a museum style, things for sale, tea, books etc on the ground floor and obviously the restaurant, Akira, upstairs - which is the focus of this review.
We arrived 20 minutes early to our booking but felt slightly rushed to our table (we would have liked to be welcomed to the bar for a drink before we ate - not a big deal at all). We we greeted with a bow and shown to our table. The atmosphere inside the restaurant part is relaxed, there's an almost a smart yet casual aura which was lovely. Some people dressed smart and some casual - that was a nice mix.
The menu is huge! Would recommend possibly deciding on your food before you get there as there is so much to look through on the menu, which is great, but like i say, we felt slightly rush as they were "fully booked" so didn't have time to fully study the menu. It is is an open kitchen which really adds to the atmosphere in a great way. The staff were kind and attentive.
We ordered the sushi moriawase selection 8 pieces and also the vegetable sushi moriawase 8 pieces. It was served in a beautiful, traditional box with a grid of sushi inside it. The food was stunning - would rate at a very high 9.6/10. Each sushi piece was different and the explosion of flavours with every bite was amazing. Some of the pieces were delicate, others were fresh, one was citrussy and was like nothing I had before. I also ordered a miso pork belly skewer which came out on what looked like a big sizzling block of dried molten lava! That skewer was absolutely delicious and makes me excited to go back and try more of the singular items from the menu.
I had the Nashi Sky cocktail which was absolutely delicious!
Overall, not just some of the best sushi I have ever had, but an amazing experience - to be immersed in Japanese culture during the meal and evening.
Will definitely be going back and would recommend to everyone! 9.4/10!
Lunchtime offer attracting a larger crowd
Akira is not the kind of restaurant we would normally travel from Crouch End to visit, given its exclusive High Street Kensington location. But it has in the past couple of months attracted the attention of the Japanese community in London with its half-price lunchtime bento box offer. This was my first visit, but my wife's third.
To be clear the current offer only applies to two boxes (one has more sushi than the other) costing ยฃ40 and a vegetarian box costing ยฃ35. 15 tiny dishes are presented in a rectangular lattice box and the overall effect is aesthetically pleasing. Everything is perfectly good without being outstanding (aside from an exceptional piece of melt-in-the-mouth tuna). Definitely worth paying ยฃ20 for but not the full price. The 175ml glasses of muscadet we ordered were reasonable value at ยฃ6 and an enjoyable creamy ยฃ8 matcha mille crepe cake was genuinely large enough for two to share.
Service was efficient and pleasant enough and remains fully masked. The dining space is open and quite attractive but the tables in front of a long bench that lines one wall are quite closely spaced making it difficult not to eavesdrop on other people's conversations.
Clearly the restaurant has been successful in attracting a wider lunchtime clientele and by 1pm all the tables were occupied. Unless there is a permanent adjustment to their high-end pricing I suspect this will prove to be transitory.
Only worth it for the half price lunch
I am not sure what is the fuss about this place. We went for lunch which has 50% off. And yes all the little traditional Japanese dishes are visually impressive. However the contents themselves are nothing much. I ordered the Akira Bento which suppose to have sashimi and meat. All I got was tuna and salmon sashimi, the rest was cooked meat or veg. My guest had the Akira sushi Bento which has more raw fish than mine, Very odd. Anyway and then they bring the miso soup in a white tea cup which you will find in like a school canteen. Just looks so odd.
Be the first to ReplySnobby waiter with cold, unhappy long face , makes you wonder why bother to dine here๐ฎ
We were there last night after a long workout in the gym, try to relax and enjoy the Japanese food, we asked waiter( maybe he is a manager because he wears suit) to recommend a sweet, not too dry sake to go with sushi and grills, he said to me " you want sweet sake, go for the dessert sake then", oh...Okay, thank you. His attitude was as cold as outside temperature , it has completely washed away the enthusiasm service that we normally expected from a high-end Japanese restaurant....
Be the first to ReplyDifferent but disappointed
Went for a birthday afternoon tea. Well presented however the felt food served was mainly โmatchaโdโ. We tried all options available.
Definitely disappointed by taste, value and the service for a supposedly high end restaurant.
No acknowledgement to us for the celebration whilst all others around us were treated differently. I had spoken to the team of my disappointment on the day, sent in a separate message and yet no response/acknowledgement.
Donโt waste your money here as there are many other good Japanese restaurants in the vicinity and wider.
Not authentic at all
It is just ok if you can have a lunch bento box at their promotional price. Their food does not worth more than that. Not authentic at all, sushi smells of fish not in a nice way.
Please, fix a problem you alredy know of. Nobody picks up the phone to receive a booking, and they casually told me they have been having a problem with their phone line for a few weeks now. What is the manager there for if he does not even bother to fix a simple problem as a phone line?
Visually stunning plating.
There is no doubt that the food is a feast for the eyes. Ceramics and sushi are wonderful. The interior decor is very simple.. Chefs can be seen behind a glass screen. When we asked what was in the 8 selection sushi, the chap was unable to tell us, saying that it was a selection. The waiter that served us was unable to give complete descriptions of what we are asking which was unusual considering the type of restaurant. The sushi and hand rolls that we had were delightful. Dessert was delicious! There was no assistance in helping you choose, assumption seemed to be that you knew exactly what everything was.
Be the first to ReplyFive Star presentation and taste
Five Star presentation and taste. All of the staff here were very good at their jobs, Particularly the Hostess. All of the Food was presented in Beautiful ways. All of the Food was outstanding. I was not disappointed with any of the courses, The Shasimi was excellent, almost (not quite) too much food to eat. This was by far one of the best Japanese meals I have ever had, my only regret was I didn't have more of my friends to share the experience with , it was that good. when in London if you don't eat here shame on you, for missing out.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Japanese dining experience
What an absolute treat to visit this authentic corner of Japan on Kensington High Street. From the traditionally shouted welcoming greetings to sushi selections served in what looked like jewellery boxes, or dainty chicken thigh skewers sizzling on volcanic rocks, every course served here is unique. We also enjoyed drinking draught Asahi in frosted pint glasses, and the fried chicken noodles were delicious, too!
PS the toilets offer a unique experience too!
We will definitely visit again for a special occasion.
