Alden & Harlow Cambridge Reviews from The Last Year

I was very happy that the menu went beyond burgers (as my friend always raved about the burgers) and it was a perfect place to get some food before seeing an independent film at the Brattle Theater. Service was also top notch (the waitress knew exactly what we needed for a good meal eg serving spoons to share, wiping down the table after our meal to get us ready for dessert, friendly, no pressure to order dessert) after they agreed to move me from the bar area (I'm not a drinker nor do I like to sit in dark hidden spots ) to the dining area (brighter and I did have reservations).

I've eaten here maybe 5 times in the past 5 years, and it is generally a nice spot but it's just enough of a mixed-bag that I don't hang my hat on it when trying to impress someone. Some great things I've had here - the pickled green beans (changed my life, to the extent that they're now a homemade staple in my own kitchen), the tuna crudo, the potatas bravas (especially with the pickled rhubarb on top). Their non-alcoholic cocktails are also interesting and complex and yummy. The kitchen LOVES to smoke and pickle things - someone it feels like they try and have a smoked-something on every dish. In general I think this is fine, but in practice the smoke usually has a weird non-wood-smoke smell/taste to it? Idk if they're smoking stuff over a gas fire or something. The atmosphere is dense and quite loud - the lighting is warm and low, so you have a cosy feel at night, but I wouldn't say its intimate (brunch time is quite sunlit, even though its underground, thanks to some skylights and peripheral windows throughout). Service is usually (relatively) good, I've had some great wait-staff (funny, conversational, attentive), and some mediocre service too (this is US-adjusted - if the service was in e.g. Asia or Southern Africa, you'd probably not tip.) Overall If you're looking for an upmarket/not-studenty restaurant to have a nice meal (maybe with your parents or a date) then its worth a try, especially since there aren't many similar options within walking distance of Harvard square.
The food and service was AMAZING.
Probably the best brunch I've ever had. High quality food.
more like a 3.
5 wont be upset you came wont be raving about it either solid choice if you are in the area not worth making a special trip
Super yummy new American style food.
Tapas-sized portions, made to share. Selection of shareable veggie starters such as roasted carrots and brussels sprouts. Basil pesto pasta was delicious and fun to share. Had the duck entree--it was delicious, yet seemed small for an entree size. Same with the salmon. So noted that you'll want to make sure to order lots of sides, as the entrees can feel a bit more "a la carte" sized. However, some at the table ordered the mackerel and the burger, and these felt like normal sized entrees. So the sizing of the entrees is a bit variable here--something to notice. Great location in Harvard Square, with a delicious wine and cocktail list.
Food and atmosphere was so perfect for what we were
Food and atmosphere was so perfect for what we were craving! Last time we came was with a large group, so I think coming with only two people made it a much easier experience. We came during a very busy Friday night and were still able to quickly grab bar seats. Our bartender was very prompt and classy, and made delicious drinks! We started with the burrata on a cake-y bread topped with orange jam. This was probably my favorite dish of the night, perfect balance of sweet and salty. Then we had the carrots, which were crunchy and actually a pretty big portion for two people. Lastly, we tried the duck, which was delicious, but definitely wasn't the best cooked duck I've tried. I personally prefer well cooked meat and theirs was slightly undercooked. For dessert, we tried their plum cake. This felt like it could feed five people because of how dense it was, but it was super yummy. Overall, we had a great dinner here and I highly recommend the bar seating if you're going with one or two people!
Went here on a Thursday night with a friend and her family.
The service was good and the decor is so cute!- a bunch of jarred pickled things everywhere. The menu is a bit expensive and the dishes are small- but the food was incredible!!!! My favorite thing was the BRAISED BEEF A LA PLANCHA, literally so tender and SO much flavor. The Brussels sprouts were also amazing. Lots of open bar seats and a good place for a date. Drinks were strong in a good way but again pricey. I will be back but maybe just for 1 or 2 things and a drinks!
Excellent food.
Innovative variations on the classics. We enjoyed everything we had. The donuts were especially delicious. We kinda wished there were more egg dishes for brunch though. The place was much bigger than I thought. Great service. We will come again.
Everything was amazing.
.. service, food, environment. Best meal we had in Boston! I wish I had a photo of the plate of bacon they brought out. It was a side order--there had to be ten pieces of bacon! Everything was unique and delicious. Highly recommend
This place is deceiving from the outside; it's huge inside.
Service was friendly and good. Food was eh. I had the shakshuka and was underwhelmed in both the size and taste. It was maybe 6 inches in diameter and relatively shallow, not very tasty, and was $19. It should be advertised as an appetizer, but was not in that section of the menu. Also I'm not a big person at all, but came for brunch. The others I were with were also disappointed with their serving sizes. Way overpriced for the size and quality. Don't go here if you're hungry.
Consistently good food.
Brunch menu they can make so many options gluten free. They have excellent drinks and really interesting food. Try the toasted fruit.
