over the past years we have visited many michelin 1-2 star restaurants and Alkimia was hands-down the worst! The positive: the ambience was unique and quirky, and the staff were lovely. The negative: the food was absolutely mediocre - bland dishes with no taste or any recognizeable unique skill required to prepare them whatsoever. At all the other michelin restaurants we've visited, the dishes were true art - in terms of composition, presentation, texture, and taste. At Alkimia, pretty much any of the dishes we could have cooked ourselves (and possibly better)! It was so dull and bland - and at times plain bad - that we sent back many of the plates unfinished. The staff told us that the plain dishes were the restaurant's style - purist and simple using great fresh ingredients. Well, it's possible that the ingredients were great, but the chef's job is not just to go shopping but to actually cook and prepare these ingredients! When we received a pan of plain fried rice with 4x salad leaves on top we thought it was a practical joke and that there were hidden cameras somewhere. One of the desserts was a half dry croissant filled with custard.. Seriously??? This is ok for a school cantina, but certainly not for alleged fine dining. And even the recommended wines were average and slightly sour. Without exaggeration, out of an 11-course tasting menu NOT A SINGLE DISH WAS GOOD OR REMOTELY HAD A "WOW" EFFECT! In only 2x points Alkimia truly amazes: (1) how on earth they were able to earn and keep a michelin star (maybe the Michelin guide inspectors are friends or relatives, or are not in posession of taste buds?)? and (2) how Alkimia have mastered the impossible - the true alchemic art of transmuting lead (mediocre food) into gold (absurdly high bills)! abolutely no! no! no! avoid this place!!
