A nice spot if you're craving Mexican food.
Everything is fresh and flavorful. Nice, clean dining room, too. I will say this - we had come because their website says they have happy hour until 6.30, which is not true! It is till 6. Nevertheless, we were enjoying the vibe, and there were plenty of seats, so we enjoyed food and drink. We left satisfied. The quesabirria is spectacular. A birria quesadilla is the dish I didn't realize I needed, and this is one of the best quesadillas I have ever had, period. So good. Thick, fresh, and delicious. We also tried the seafood guacamole, which comes with chips and a heaping of guac topped with lobster meat (or maybe crab, I'm no expert). It was good, too. The dish is very simple, and maybe a tad under seasoned, but the fish tasted fresh, and that is most important. For drinks, we tried the rum old fashioned. It was boozy as can be, and had a nice brown sugar coating on the rim. Yum. Bonus points for the amazing pizza oven, which is adorned with skulls and bright colors. Yes, they have pizzas on the menu with Mexican flavors. We didn't try them on this visit, but I can't wait to check that out.
Be the first to ReplyAnafre is by far one of the best seafood Mexican
Anafre is by far one of the best seafood Mexican restaurants in DC. Their Menu features plates from the region of Veracruz , Mexico, with food unique to this region. We have the salmon with an special sauce that brought so many flavors together. The Parillada was very well cooked, with great seasoning, and onions maintain their moist! Beans and rice uniquely season as well The service was great, and the ambiance is always nice, with them always having space for my whole family to come and eat!
Be the first to ReplyWe've been to this restaurant once a year ago.
And it wasn't bad. Last night me and two buddies tried a few places near my house and they all were packed with wait times of over 45 minutes. Except for Anafre. The place was dead which should have been a sign. We got seated immediately by the waitress. They had a waitress who was also the bartender, a waiter who was also the busboy, and a young lady who was the cook-- total of three employees. We ordered margarita, 3 glasses of water, chips and salsa, appetizers, the big platter of mixed meats and a pizza. After 15 minutes of sitting, waitress brought waters with no ice and the fresh cucumber margarita that was anything but fresh. We knew we should have just paid for the margarita and left. But sadly we stayed. Chips and salsa took another 15 minutes-- and seriously just 10 pieces of chips. To cut this short, food didn't arrive until 75 minutes we had ordered. I know this for a fact because we put our name down at the restaurant next door at 7:15pm. With just one cook it was obvious food would take long. But the waitress could have informed us, come check on us, fill our waters up, ask us to order more drinks, or even bring out chips. Waitress had no clue how to attend to customers aside from seating them. She did the same with the table next to us, a family of 4 who also was getting angry over the service. Food: extremely greasy. And even the pizza was just drowned in mole and a few pieces of chicken. Lack of flavor but worse was no understanding by our waitress of setting expectations when you know you have just one slow cook in the back. Avoid this place. Clueless employees, drinks are prepaid syrups, food is not tasty and greasy (that's if you ever get your food). So many Mexican restaurants around this place, so make a wise decision and go elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyFood was excellent, amazing cocktails, slow service.
I will be back because the food is authentic and good quality.
Be the first to Reply4 stars for a pretty solid Mexican food spot.
My wife and I were looking to grab a bite to eat (and a marg) recently in the northern DC area and saw that Anafre was listed as a new entry on the Washingtonian Top 100. After looking through the reviews, we booked our table and headed over. We arrived to find a pretty cute-looking venue with some tables outside, a large interesting mural on the inside with tables lining the wall on the right, a bar on the left, and the cooking/pizza oven area towards the back. The venue isn't gigantic, but it also is not too cramped. We took a seat at our table and the server brought us over menus. Despite the venue not being terribly busy, our server seemed pretty busy and wasn't able to stop at our table very much for too long. He was pleasant when he stopped by, but it seems like this venue is light on staff. I started out with an old fashioned, my wife started out with a marg, and we both started our meal with the los cabos guac and oysters with crab meat. The drinks were hit or miss (mine was solid and very strong, my wife's marg could have been a little stronger but tasted good). The guac and oysters were both awesome! Each dish was a good size for the price and tasted great. We then put in our orders, with a Chile Relleno for my wife and the submarino for me. Before getting to the food (which was so good that the place is close to a 5 stars), what really held this place back for me was the wait. While we were only there for about 75 minutes (not great when you start checking your watch and know that fact), the wait time between ordering and receiving food in a somewhat non-busy restaurant can be frustrating. I know it takes time to cook fresh food, but 30-40 minutes for entrees is a little too long in my book, and other reviews I have read reflect this is a recurring problem. However, once those entrees came out, my wife and I were in for a treat! My submarino was packed with seafood, guac, and just tons of flavor. My wife's chile relleno was made "California style" in her words and packed all of the punch that she remembered when she ordered the dish in Cali. Overall, Anafre provided us with some fantastic Mexican food for a really great price. We may order take out in the future to avoid the wait time issue, but overall this is a solid spot.

We went on May 30th Sunday based on their website noting happy hour on Sundays. When we got there and asked for the happy hour menu, we were told that they no longer have happy hour on Sundays despite what is noted on their website, which we showed to them. We ended up staying but paying 3 times of what we had planned for the evening. No apology from the restaurant. the food itself was only so-so, lacking deep flavor even in the side dips. With so many good Mexican restaurants around DC, including Mezcalera down the street, this one is not the one to choose.

My primary gripe is that I was drawn in by the menu posted on Anafre's website but when seated the menus we were given were very different. The website menu featured 3 cocktails made with the Mexican spirit Sotol. The drink menu now is very "plain Jane" and the bartender had not even heard of Sotol. So too with the food menu. Neither of the dishes I had picked out for my daughter and me were on the current menu. I will say that my Seafood Enchiladas were generous and tasty but my daughters hamburger was cooked to a fare thee well and should not have been served. Anafre needs to update their website as bait and switch is no way to run a business.

Great neighborhood spot, delicious food and drinks, a little crowded and service was just a bit slow but it was a cold, busy night.

4.5 stars, rounding up because it was chill with quick service on a Friday night. We made a reservation, but you could absolutely have sidled up to the bar on this chilly Friday. The drinks here were all great! I had the aguachili margarita, which was excellent - refreshing and spicy! My friends had tamarind and hibiscus drinks and loved them (the hibiscus one was especially awesome). For appetizers, we had the Queso Fundido en Hoja de Platano and chile relleno. Both were great, although I especially loved the chili relleno since it had everything going on - spicy, crunchy, creamy, everything! We finished off with two pizzas - the jardin and the poblano. The poblano was fine but not as good as everything else we'd had. The jardin, on the other hand, was awesome - lots of flavors and a crunchy crust that made for easy snacking. Overall, a great experience. Our server was responsive and the food and drinks were delicious. We would definitely come back!
Be the first to ReplySo yummy! We got seafood enchiladas and birria torta.
10/10 I can't wait to come back!

Met up with work colleagues who made reservations for dinner. Found street parking about 1/2 block away. We arrived a few minutes late, but our colleagues were already seated. Sat down and our friends shared that they hadn't eaten here either, but had heard the Mexican seafood was distinctive. Yes, I was definitely trying their Mexican seafood. Cocktails?Ordered a house margarita for a cocktail. Whoa, this was on the stronger side, so I stuck with 1 cocktail for the evening.Appetizers?Anafre Ceviche-crab meat, octopus, lobster, cucumber, radish, fresh lime and cilantro. This was a big hit with our table. They also serve with a couple of raw oysters and I managed to grab one of them. Very good appetizer.Los Cabos Guacamole-lobster, crab meat, serrano peppers, cilantro, fresh lemon juice, EVOO. This was very good, but I couldn't taste the lobster or crab meat. They provide only a few chips to scoop, but it ended up working out perfect.Entree?Seafood Enchilada-crab meat, shrimp, cheese, morita sauce and served with rice and beans. This was delicious. Even the rice and beans were very good. My only critique for the evening is they appeared understaffed and our server was very slow the first 30 minutes taking our order and delivering drinks. Things improved when another server arrived about halfway through our meal.Great restaurant if you're craving that Mexican seafood of Cabo.
Be the first to ReplyI was looking forward to eating here on Christmas Eve
I was looking forward to eating here on Christmas Eve before my family and I took in a show at the Kennedy Center. I reserved a table at 5:00 pm via Resy (the restaurant's reservation system)... When we showed up the restaurant was closed. We ended up eating in the Mexican restaurant next door. I would not trust the reservation system and would verify by calling the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is just the best.
They specialize in Mexican seafood dishes and everything is SO good...the shrimp and mahi mahi tacos are excellent, and they've done a great job with the Mexican pizzas during the pandemic as well. It's a fun place to dine in (love the painted pizza oven), and great for takeout as well. Service is fast and friendly. There's a lot of options on 14th Street with Habanero, Corazon, etc. nearby...but Anafre is the clear winner. Hope they are around for a long long time!
Be the first to ReplyAnafre never disappoints.
This is what the "tik-tokers" mean when they mention "hidden gems" because from the naked eye you would probably miss this spot. Every time I visit the service is always good along with the food. My go-to favorite appetizers are the Oysters al Carbon con Crab Meat and Lobster Guacamole. The Oysters are reminiscent of the charbroiled oysters you can get from New Orleans, so that's an automatic win for me. The Guacamole is always fresh and the lobster addition is a nice added touch. My go-to entree is the Seafood Enchiladas. You get rice and beans with three (or four) seafood-stuffed enchiladas. The last time I went my friend had the Birria Tacos and they were delicious as well. There was one drink I always get with Tamarind in it. Very delicious! Overall my experience is always good here.

Update since I already wrote a 5 star review last time I was here. Anafre has THE BEST tacos in DC, if there's a website to vote on this let me know. They're HUGE, flavorful, and delicious. I love that they have rice and beans on the tacos. Favorite Mexican spot.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is amazing.
Seafood is very fresh and often served sizzling. We go here weekly as a family and I'm totally shocked that other places next to it are way more crowded, this place is the best and service is great

incredible prices for the quality of food. would recommend to a friend!!
Be the first to ReplyI always enjoy Anafre when I visit and I'm sure you will
I always enjoy Anafre when I visit and I'm sure you will too. The Sinaloa Vuelve à la Vida is what draws me to this eatery. It's a massive Mexican inspired seafood ceviche and it's beautiful. It has crab, shrimp, octopus, oysters, spicy citrus, avocado and it's served with crackers in an Aztec looking mortar and pestle. The mojito was okay, and the pizza was also really good--even cold since I took it to go. Try this place out.. I'm personally never disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite Mexican food in Columbia heights.
The guac with lobster and crab was unreal. Been dreaming about it since I last got it. The tacos are all great, and the drinks in the pineapples are yummy and fun. They don't open till 4 on Saturdays which has bummed me out a couple of times.
Be the first to ReplyThe chile relleno pizza is one of the most amazing things
The chile relleno pizza is one of the most amazing things I've eaten in the last year. One of the most unique and tantalizing pizzas I've *ever* had. I hope they keep the pizza on their menu - it's like nothing else in DC.

The ceviche is outstanding!!! Also enjoyed a spicy tamarind margarita - I'll be dreaming of that later :) We enjoyed every bite during dine in and their takeout pizzas are amazing as well. Highly recommended!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food! The menu is very creative.
Twists on many classics. From the pizzas to the tacos to the nachos and the oysters, everything tastes wonderful. Kudos to the chef! 5 stars on the culinary side of things. 2 star service. Every restaurant is short staffed. I get it. So I'm keeping that in mind here. Even when the place is practically empty, it's a real hassle to get served. And when you do put an order in for a drink. It takes an act of Congress them to grab it for you. I hope they get the support they deserve. The team is clearly overwhelmed. And it's hard to say why? This is my 6th time dining in and I don't think it will get another chance for dine in. Takeout. Sure.
Be the first to ReplyI really enjoyed my visit to Anafre.
The food was very fresh and flavorful and everything was served promptly. The drinks are also good and strong, I had the mojito and it was delicious. For the food I had the fish, steak and chicken tacos. The sizes are filling and unless you're extremely hungry 3 should be good.

Bravo, Bravo, Bravo to this hidden gem! This place will continuously get my business because my first experience (by good recommendations) is not going to be my last. Arrival: I'm not too familiar with the area so it took a while for me to find the building between other restaurants but once found, the magic began. When I walked in, one of the servers came to me and immediately greeted me and sat me down while I waited for my party. Giving great eye contact, the server accommodated my wait time with water and stayed nearby until my party arrived-to which he immediately started to take our orders. Establishment: the only place which needs to be worked on is the bathroom area. It was a bit messy and I can imagine that it stemmed from a long day of service. But, it's always great to practice in checking on it to make sure it's stocked and clean. The general seating area in my picture was very clean and well kept and the staff upheld the use of mask pretty well. Food: I didn't drink any of their speciality cocktails but my friend raved about her margarita. Let's jump into the food...I ordered the Los Cabos Guacamole and honey...THIS IS A WINNER! It's paired with fresh homemade chips and topped with lobster meat. SO absolutely delicious and very filling. I couldn't make myself think about anything else after this because I was pleasantly full. Okay, I lied lol, I couldn't visit this fine establishment and not have dessert. That's when more love hit my heart...I ordered the Tres Leche cake and THIS BABY WAS WORTH THE ADD-ON!!!!! Ahhhhhhh what an amazing end to an already delicious dinner. Overall, this place is worth visiting. It's a gem and I'm glad that it thoroughly illustrates authentic Mexican culture and delicious food. I enjoyed every moment here and will be coming back for more!
