Aquavit New York Reviews from The Last Year
Went to Aquavit as part of a recent trip to NYC.
Was curious having Scandinavian ancestors, but I can pretty much guarantee they did not have a menu quite like Aquavit. The food was exceptional and our service from Virginia and wait staff was perfect. Topping it off, Patrick gave a very nice tour of the Kitchen after our late lunch reservation, making it a great meal and experience. The Birds Nest dessert blew me away for both presentation and deliciousness. Honestly, one of the best dining experiences, and I must thank my wife for picking this restaurant, she had carte Blanche, and will be a cherished memory.
I was not sure about this place.
I honestly had a doubt, and I was not enthusiastic to go to Aquavit. I was w r o n g ! It was a fantastic experience! You should try and do the pairing with some very unique wine selection!
Excellent food and service!
This was our very first 2-starred Michelin experience we've had, and it was incredible! Each dish was so well thought-out and well-executed. The langoustine was exquisite, the scallop was delicate, and the the caviar was surprisingly light! The Bird's Nest dessert to finish everything off-- there are no words! I still daydream of this dinner. We were also blown away by how professional the staff was, with incredible attention to detail!
A most excellent experience.
Great food well served. A restaurant which richly deserves its reputation. Andrew Goldman

One of the finest restaurants I've ever been! It was truly a privilege and honor to taste their food and wine. Impeccable service and romantic ambiance.
I would have given Aquavit five stars, but I must restrict
I would have given Aquavit five stars, but I must restrict it to four solely due to the level of service we encountered. Candidly, I could consider lowering it by another half-star, but that wouldn't be fair since the food was truly exceptional. In the politest way possible, the service for a two-star Michelin restaurant felt amateurish. Food: We selected the Chef's Tasting Menu because, let's be honest, we wanted the "Arctic Bird's Nest" dessert, which was one of the most beautiful and delicious desserts I have ever eaten. We were also celebrating a birthday, and the accompanying celebratory cake was equally delectable. Setting aside the exceptional desserts, the Chefs Tasting Menu at Aquavit was a triumph, showcasing a breadth of flavors and culinary craftsmanship that stood impressively on its own. Every dish we enjoyed at Aquavit was a refined expression of Nordic cuisine, elevated by inventive and tasteful additions that took the flavors to new heights. For instance, the Langoustine with Meyer lemon featured a delicate shrimp "cracker" on top that was unlike anything I've ever tasted. The caviar and potato dish and the red snapper with apple both showcased culinary elegance, using the freshest ingredients to highlight their natural flavors. Each dish and its elements were thoughtfully paired with sauces and garnishes that subtly enhanced the natural flavors without overpowering them. And the BREAD! I find myself wishing for a small bakery attached to the restaurant so that I can indulge in their exquisite bread daily. Chef Emma Bengtsson has established herself as an exceptional culinary talent, which is evident in Aquaivits' culinary offerings. As the first Swedish female chef to earn two Michelin stars and only the second in the U.S. to do so, Chef Bengtsson masterfully combines traditional techniques with bold, contemporary flavors. Her approach creates a Nordic dining experience deeply rooted in tradition yet strikingly modern. We didn't explore the full range of their cocktail offerings, opting instead for classic martinis, which were excellent. We also enjoyed a few rounds of Aquavit, "water of life," which I highly recommend trying. Service: As I mentioned, the service did not meet the expectations for a restaurant with two Michelin stars. This was not just a one-off instance. Everyone lacked polish, from the check-in staff to the bartenders (we had a few drinks before dinner in the bar room) and the wait staff in the main dining room. Specifically, the front-of-house staff was not responsive to some requests and was slightly awkward. The bartenders were not the friendliest group. In the main dining room, it felt like every waiter was on their first day. Despite the shortcomings in service, the remarkable quality of the dishes at Aquavit ensures that I would not hesitate to return or recommend this restaurant to others. The need for service improvement is mentioned not as a deterrent but as a constructive suggestion to align the entire experience with the high standards set by their culinary offerings.
The dining room is stunning, and I love that you can see
The dining room is stunning, and I love that you can see into the kitchen as they are preparing and plating everything. It was very cool to see Chef Emma Bengtsson at work. The dishes were bright and delicious, and a little surprising (in the best way possible). Service was friendly and personable.
We came here for lunch tasting menu.
The service was top notch, we received lots of snacks and gifts. All the courses were well-paced and delicious. The seafood dishes were fresh. You need to get the artic bird nest, it was a masterpiece and all the flavors went so well with each other. I would definitely recommend?
A bit more old school Michelin restaurant in decor and
A bit more old school Michelin restaurant in decor and service but that's not a complaint. The food was EXCELLENT the staff was perfection, I liked the classic modernist Scandinavian decor. Personally I think this is underrated and often forgotten when people are thinking of the best restaurants in the city. Check it out for some amazing seafood and you won't be disappointed.
Truly a special experience. 3rd star?! Hmm
Very very good. A truly memorable experience. The chef seems calm and unflappabe and came out to visit. She even sent me a truffle treat that absolutely made my day. Each course bursted with flavor and texture. The plating was worthy of an art museum. The caviar was generous. The famous arctic birds nest was worth all the hype. I did not want it to end. Too notch service as well. Barely finished my water before it was refilled. Lovely setting too.
Food, service, ambience.
..all were exceptional and far above most previous dining experiences. We had the chef's tasting menu along with the wine pairing and thoroughly enjoyed the almost three hour experience.
Perfect
We celebrated our foodie daughter's birthday here with a 3 course lunch. Everything was perfect-the food, the presentation, the service. We also enjoyed sampling many flavors of house made aquavit. Highly recommend.
Cuisine not always incisive
Room furnished in a minimal way, soft lights and essential mise en place. Scandinavian-derived cuisine with a menu that is not too broad and does not include a real tasting experience but only the possibility of choosing à la carte (they do not serve bread unless it is included among the starters as a separate dish). The food is good but not always incisive, the service is attentive. I appreciated the silence, which is anything but a given in NY restaurants. Prices clearly not within everyone's reach.
Aquavit is exceptional in every way.
My husband and I went for their lunch for our wedding anniversary and it blew us away. The lunch included yellowtail & pear, cod & cauliflower, beef & black trumpet, and arctic bird's nest for dessert. We added the cheese board for an extra price. Every bite was outstanding - so fresh, creative, and flavorful. We really were exported to Scandinavia during our meal. My husband got a cocktail and I got a mocktail. Both delicious. Their decor is minimalist, sharp, understated, and neutral, and I enjoyed it. Service was on top of everything. I loved the open kitchen concept. They gave us a goody bag with smoked sea salt to use for cooking. Deserving of all of the awards and accolades. Such a standout in the expensive restaurants category!

Where do I begin?!?! We recently dined at Aquavit, and it was an unforgettable experience! To start, they graciously treated us to complimentary champagne to celebrate our special occasion. Then, they surprised us with delightful bite-sized appetizers that only heightened our anticipation for what was to come. Opting for the chef's tasting menu, we savored every dish that graced our table, but the scallops pudding and wagyu steak stole the show for me. And let's not forget about the dessert - it was a masterpiece! Before indulging in the main dessert, they presented a whimsical lollipop forest to cleanse our palates, adding an extra touch of fun to the evening. The highlight was undoubtedly the main dessert: a stunning bird's nest adorned with chocolate and candies. Without a doubt, Aquavit is a must-visit establishment!
Aquavit is the place where dill and pickled vegetables run
Aquavit is the place where dill and pickled vegetables run the show. As a Scandinavian restaurant, I understand the somewhat heavy usage of dill. Nonetheless, the small dining room smelled amazing with views of the kitchen. The tasting menu was not too quick and not too long as it was about 2 hours for 8 courses. The main winners of the night were the scallop foam dish that tasted spectacular as it hit almost all of the flavor profiles. The star of the day was the bird's nest and it was crazy. A fun presentation with delicious flavors and the egg almost tasted like ice cream. The duck was good as it has a nice char. I wasn't a fan of the sun choke with the lobster but it did not ruin my experience. The black bass was delicious too. The yellowtail and pear were refreshing as well. All in all, Aquavit offered a fantastic tasting menu that wasn't too heavy as I left content but not overly full. Also, Aquavit makes in house aquavit but just watch out because it is strong. A memorable experience that matched expectations for a 2 star.
Finally a great wine pairing with a tasting menu
Excellent Chef"s tasting menu with wine pairing. Service was great. Tinney was an excellent wine expert
Exquisite
Exquisite dining room in a gorgeous, peaceful setting with delicious food and fabulous wait staff who were welcoming and polished
For the quality of the food and overall experience, it's the best deal in NYC
Best deal in NYC! We've been a couple times and each time have a great experience. The food is fantastic - creative, presented very well, and delicious, and the drinks are equally creative and delicious. Service is always great, and the atmosphere is great as well. And for the price, you can't beat it.
We had lunch here and it was delightful.
They have a price point that seem more accessible for a 2 michelin star restaurant. They offer a three course lunch here for eighty-five (two course for seventy five). It's a nice place to go for a more casual Michelin level dining experience.
Deeply enjoyable Michelin 2 Star restaurant at an
Deeply enjoyable Michelin 2 Star restaurant at an accessible price point. The 5 course tasting did not cost much more than a meal at a steakhouse featuring a decent bottle of wine. Aquavit is a beautiful restaurant and all of the preparations, in a seafood-forward format, were memorable. The corner table for 6 here was really neat. I'd just note that the pomp and drama you'd find a more traditional French Michelin experience were largely (but not entirely) absent. This is more like Elske in Chicago than Le Louis XV in Monaco. And, considering the culture reflected, I'd think rightfully so.
Scandanavian done to perfection
If you are looking for a Michelin Starred fine dining restaurant Aquavit can stand proudly next to the best in the world. From the amuse buche to the famous birds nest desert each course was creative and well executed. The Scallops and Chestnut was a personal favorite, with the flavor of grilled scallop infused through the dish. The staff was awesome, not just attentive and detail oriented, but you were left with the feeling they were happy to be there. Emma Bengtssom, the executive chef was working the pass and was an oasis of calm, clearly in her element and with every detail under control. A wonderful experience and would gladly return.
A Great Way to Sample Nordic-Inspired Fine Dining Without Leaving the States
We enjoyed the Chef’s Tasting menu with wine pairing and supplements. Although the caviar paired well with the various dishes, the truffles didn’t. This is not to say that the food wasn’t excellent, it was! The service was professional and the drinks pairing spot on. Food favorites were the duck, and the caviar & potato. The Arctic Bird’s Nest dessert, so tasty, was the perfect way to end the meal. Well done one and all.
A memorable anniversary dinner
We had the most amazing dinner last night at Aquavit, as we celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. The service was impeccable, the food was amazing (we did the chef’s tasting menu), and the wine pairing was one of the best ones we’ve had to date. Particular highlights were the rainbow trout dish (one of the most memorable dishes of my life) and the arctic bird’s nest. Loved it!
