Lovely characterful old place
It's a beautiful approach through a park (Lowther Estate) and alongside the river, and the building and grounds are grand and impressive. We had a warm welcome and were shown straight to our room (Griffin) via a magnificent staircase (shades of Downton Abbey!). It was a nice size with period features like an old fireplace, with a huge bathroom (with both a free standing bath and walk-in rain shower, which I love), but was a bit cold. We switched the radiators on which helped, but it's not ideal to have to do that ourselves. There was a great info pack which was much appreciated, but the room was quite dark with no main light in the ceiling. We loved the honesty bar down in the lounge area and the roaring fire, and the meal at Allium was superb.
Be the first to ReplyIF YOU CAN, VISIT!
What a great place to visit on our drive north. The room upgrade was most appreciated too. We enjoyed the Tasting menu, all courses were super yummy with some skilful cooking. Nico the sommelier suggested the most moorish wines too. If you can, VISIT!
Be the first to ReplyAn excellent night to remember
Askham Hall is just a wonderful place to stay. The staff are delightful, food amazing, wine list magnificent. What more can you ask??? We had a beautiful, huge bedroom with everything you could possibly need - the attention to detail was impressive. The service was very attentive throughout but delivered in the most laid back, comfortable style. Well done for superb staff training and for not being at all stuffy or arrogant! And the setting - great walks from the door, lovely gardens (sure they're a lot better in the spring) and the freshest air. So good for the soul.
Be the first to ReplyNice old building in a lovely little village
This hotel is based in a very old Peel tower and is full of character. Our room, Griffin, had a large bathroom with a free standing bath. The room was classed as a "Generous Double" which I don't believe is an accurate description. The room size was OK but there was no storage, no wardrobe, only a small rail attached to the wall at waist height, so nowhere to hang a dress. The bed itself was maybe past it's best. Breakfast was OK, good quality sausage and black pudding but over cooked eggs. The area around the hotel is a lovely little village. Wood i go back? Difficult question.... maybe.
Be the first to ReplyWeekend at Askham Hall
A surprise birthday weekend at Askham Hall with friends was a huge success. This was directly inspired by the fabulous location, attentive contact by the staff there, and the amazing food provided by chef Richard Swale. This was our second visit to this stunning location and will not be our last.
Be the first to ReplyA package of perfection.
This was our fourth visit to Askham hall, ive only been home a few days and im already wanting to return again. Everything is good here and collectively everything adds up to the absolutely perfect experience. The food is 1 Michelin star level and we chose the 8 course tasting menu for ยฃ125. The food was very enjoyable with much of it being sourced locally. Askham hall is in the middle of the Lowther estates so perfectly situated in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside....the perfect escape. Game is in abundance all around the estates , Deer , Pheasant , Rabbit , woodcock etc etc and i would dearly like to see more of that appearing on the menu. Wine - One of the very best wine cellars in the UK with prices ranging from the very affordable up to ยฃ68,000...thats a lottery win. We chose the wine flight with the food at ยฃ95 per person. Nico is both the restaurant manager and sommelier and at 10/10 he`s the best in the business.....there`s none better anywhere in the UK. Service was great , all smiles and very pleasant. Ambience and history.....wow. This place is wonderful and magically preserved in time. A Roaring log fire and a well stocked honesty bar....what`s not to like ? All in all its not just about the Michelin food here.....Askham ticks every single box all around , its the perfect package.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful location, magnificent building but disappointing dining experience.
Quaint and quirky setting in historic Cumbrian village but in need of a makeover or some updating of decor and replacement of threadbare. carpeting. The big draw is the hall and surrounding gardens as the food and wine in the restaurant Allium which was the main reason we chose to stay was disappointing. It seemed that any quality food on the tasting menu had long been replaced by cheaper alternatives for example a small piece of Cod for the fish course was a bit of a lazy option and a small slice of Pork for the meat course was to be honest a bit of an insult. So overall the tasting menu was decidedly ordinary. The wine pairings were similarly unremarkable options and strange that although one menu was vegetarian wine pairings were exactly the same for completely different dishes, food and flavours so no real effort was made to match food and wine. So ordinary food, paired with unremarkable wines was a bit of a let down in a fine dining restaurant. The staff were very helpful and friendly throughout but overall the dining experience was not very memorable and did not appear to represent value for money.
Be the first to ReplyCosy luxury
After several thwarted attempts I finally spent a night here including an exquisite meal at their Allium restaurant. We felt welcome from the moment we arrived. The age and higgledy piggledy layout provided truly authentic quirkiness. A large log fire was burning in the lounge with two large squishy armchairs in front of it which we immediately bagged. An extensive range of drinks were available from the honesty bar so we really felt at home. My room was very comfortable and well equipped. I particularly enjoyed the free standing bath in front of a window overlooking the courtyard. The tasting menu was divine and the service was excellent. After a full English breakfast the following morning we tried to walk it off with a walk round the gardens and Askham village which is perhaps one of the prettiest in the Lake District. Highly recommended
Be the first to ReplyStaying with the family
This is a very old family house and from the moment we arrived we felt like we were staying with the family! All the staff were so nice and welcoming and nothing was a problem. The food at Alium was amazing and the wine pairing and info given on the wines was a delight. Yes itโs old and yes it might by slighty shabby but itโs just gorgeous. You canโt help but relax. Really impressed that everything is local incl tea, coffee, biscuits etc etc. Thankyou for a wonderful 2 days we wonโt ever forget.
Be the first to ReplyGlorious Gatehouse Suite
Another delightful stay at this fabulous castle - this time in the Gatehouse suite. What a joy! Wonderful space - love the mix of old and new, the patina of the sofa, the clever use of fabrics & pictures to give a modern but antique style all together. Feather bedding and a great bed allow for the perfect nights sleep. Clean, comfortable and delightful. Thank you.

We had a great experience at Askham Hall, a real treat. The restaurant is quite small and very comfortable and is in a lovely old building. The food was all top quality and I like the fact that it is all locally sourced. The starters and desserts were all particularly creative and tasty. The staff were all highly efficient and very friendly. The meal was quite expensive but probably represents good value noting the quality of the food and the excellent service.

My Husband and I stayed recently in Askham Hall near Ullswater.. We had had to cancel our visit a couple of times previously due to Covid. They were more than understanding and extremely patient and helpful with us. We have just returned from the most wonderful time. If you like being surrounded by history in a beautiful setting and wonderful interior dรฉcor then this is the place to stay! I cannot put into just a few words how welcoming and helpful everyone was and the food absolutely delicious. We had the tasting menu on Valentine's night and our children had treated us to the wine pairing option to go with it . What a culinary delight this was. Brilliant and thank to to the chefs and waiting staff who made it so very special. The gardens are delightful even in February and there are several nearby local walks . There is a spa and a heated open air swimming pool which we did not use this time but hopefully on our next visit. The Queen's Head ( part of the Hotel package) in the village also produced a fantastic meal for us and what a lovely place this is too. We felt thoroughly spoilt and stayed in Sycamore Room which was so comfortable, beautifully decorated in line with the rest of the hotel and the added luxury of a roll top bath in the ensuite bathroom! We are really hoping to return again soon, We are, for our good fortune, world travelled people and this place is high on our list of memorable places. Very special indeed. Thank you to all at Askham Hall for making our stay perfect in everyway! XX

Accessible room really was accessible (stayed in the stable room), large comfortable bed and wet room type shower with plenty of grab rails. Ramp to hotel entrance helped greatly. Staff courteous and helpful. Good value for money. Great breakfast; lovely surroundings and gardens
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Wedding Venue.
We booked our daughterโs wedding with a significant number of bedrooms. We arrived on Friday afternoon and left on Sunday morning. The event and rooms were excellent. The staff could not have been more helpful and efficient. The food and bar service were great. All our guests praised the event.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a great place
We had a very pleasant stay at Askham Hall. The place has got a great atmosphere - history combined with a relaxed environment, where you are made to feel that you are welcome. The views are superb, and it is possible to have a walk round the kitchen garden, where produce for the restaurant is grown. Room was cosy and with character. And the most amazing thing of course being the restaurant Allium with its well deserved Michelin star.
Be the first to ReplyStunning hotel and location
Elegant and beautifully restored this hotel really is a gem in the Cumbrian countryside. The staff are highly professional, the food is exquisite and the rooms are delightful. We will certainly be returning.
Be the first to ReplyA lovely place
A lovely 12th-century building that has some beautiful gardens that are very well maintained and fantastic surrounding views. They also have a pizzeria in the back with a proper pizza oven. Dogs are welcome too!
Be the first to ReplyBar was great and fully stocked, staff ALL friendly and plesent. Food was very enjoyable.
This venue was outstanding, for a friends wedding, food was fantastic, staff great and the bar fully stocked ๐. The grounds were extremely well maintained, we didnโt stay there though sadly. Would definitely recommend this location to others
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding in every respect
I visited Askham Hall for the 80th birthday celebration of a former work colleague. The stay was a great success on every front and I cannot think of any way that it could have been improved. The staff were friendly but unobtrusive, so that if help was needed it was provided immediately but otherwise we were allowed space and quiet. The venue is quite outstanding, a beautiful old house and grounds with lovely gardens (including wonderfully-tended vegetable gardens that provided some of the fresh ingredients for meals). The evening meal with its taster menu and accompanying wines was one of the best meals I have ever eaten - simply delicious from start to finish. If I had to highlight a few exceptional high points they would be the canapes, the langoustines, and the hoggett lamb, but nothing disappointed. The description of the courses and the wines by the knowledgeable and enthusiastic manager were informative interesting and entertaining. My room was spacious light and airy, comfortable and quiet with great views. I am sure I will be returning. Thanks to the staff for a very enjoyable stay.
Be the first to ReplyWedding
My partner and II got married here and I really can't recommend Askham Hall enough! Jen was our wedding planner and really couldn't do enough for us. We had a small wedding of 30 people and this venue was perfect. Leading up to the wedding Jen was doing Teams call's with us at 8pm at night to accommodate us not living in the area, working and having a 2 year old. We stayed for 2 nights and the whole stay was perfect. We had our evening meal at the restaurant on the evening of the wedding and the food was superb. The service was exceptional. There was a guy (can't remember his name) and he was serving us during both breakfast times and at the evening meal. He was brilliant, very accommodating and professional. We want to thank everyone at Askham Hall for the service you provided to us and all of our guests. The feedback we have had from family and friends has been wonderful. Thank you for making our wedding so special and memorable. We will definitely be returning.
Be the first to ReplyImpressive building and gardens and friendly staff - shame about our room
A fine historic building in a beautiful village and with a spectacular outlook, boasting a magnificent lounge, grand staircase, and intriguing modern restaurant. The gardens are expertly stocked and maintained, and the kitchen garden worth a visit. Sadly, though, our cramped bedroom (Park View) wasted space with an oversized table, had an uncomfortable bed, and couldn't even stretch to any hanging space! Not what we expected for the price. The staff were very friendly (though the offer to carry our bags up to our room never materialised).
Be the first to ReplyBirthday Treat
Stayed here as a birthday treat. Lovely cosy hotel! The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly and it felt like you were staying in someoneโs home as opposed to a hotel! I really liked the honestly bar and the log fires! This is the first time Iโve ever really felt comfortable chatting to other guests but the environment made it feel completely natural! The food in the restaurant was lovely will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyA memory to cherish
Where to start โฆ weโve been to Askham Hall a few times before and it never disappoints. The food is absolutely incredible, you can taste the passion and effort that goes into every dish. The surroundings are beautiful, quintessentially British and so tastefully done, you feel like youโve gone back in time and are treated like royalty. But, above all itโs the people that make Askham Hall so special. Weโve only been a couple of times before and yet youโre made to feel like youโre part of the family. Josh and Nico in particular make you feel so special and theyโre genuinely lovely people, who want nothing more than to make your evening as perfect as it can be and they achieve it every time. We recently celebrated my Mumโs special 50th birthday and she was so touched by how special she was made to feel, with Josh opening a bottle of 1972 wine for us all to enjoy (and we got to keep the cork with the date for an extra special touch). It was an evening we will all cherish forever, thank you.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful establishment in beautiful setting
Amazing hotel in the Lake District. We could not eat in the restaurant as it was closed (on a Sunday) but did eat close by in one of the pubs owned by the Askham Hall Group. It was superb and is only about a 5 min drive away. Stayed in the 'Train Room' which was a fantastic setting and a lovely spot.
Be the first to ReplyA Perfect Choice
Askham Hall is a magnificent Grade I listed building in the beautiful village of Askham and is a perfect choice, for a luxury break in Cumbria.
From the moment you step into the reception area you are welcomed. The downstairs lounges are where you can spend quiet time reading, or just admire the character of this building. An honesty bar is available, just write down what you have and pay on check out.
The unique character continues in the bedrooms.
We stayed in the 13 th century east wing. Rooms are very quiet and comfortable with all amenities. Some of the rooms have bath or walk in shower only, whilst others have both. The website is excellent to determine which room is the most suitable. The views from these rooms are stunning across the well tendered gardens. Snowdrops and crocuses currently carpet the lawns, reminding us that Spring is just around the corner.
The โAlliumโ restaurant is worthy of the Michelin Star and certainly ranks amongst the two and three star restaurants we have visited. The staff are passionate and the talented chef makes creative use of the seasonal produce from the kitchen garden. The two sommeliers have vast knowledge in the wine industry and it is interesting to listen to their commentary of the wines they serve.
Breakfast are excellent with varied choices.
We also dined in the Queens Head in the village, which is part of the Askham Collection. The food here tasted delicious and we would class our meal as higher end pub food. The manager and assistant manager were very friendly and welcoming.
The jewel of Askham Hall and its collection is the staff, an amazing team throughout. We most certainly will return. Thank you for providing this amazing experience.
