Absolutely perfect!
Bar Crenn has provided one of the best — if not the best — dining experiences I’ve had to date. As a party of one, I was unable secure a table at Atelier Crenn, but was able to still experience the tasting menu at Bar Crenn. Normally with tasting menus at this level, there’s one or two dishes that I find not to my taste — either the chef is being too creative or the style is not my preferred. I’m not a seafood lover but just had an all seafood menu that was divine. Kudos to the only female three star Michelin chef in the US!

My husband and I come from Chicago to San Francisco yearly and always try to eat at one of the Michelin starred restaurants in this city. This year, we decided to dine at the 6 person counter top at Bar Crenn, adjacent to Atelier Crenn. What a great choice!! The room is very small and looks like a warm cozy parlor. There are 6-8? spaces at the bar and there are also tables and couches in the room from which people can order wine and eat of the a la carte menu. At the bar, we chose the 8 course tasting menu with the Library wines. As is the same in the restaurant, each dish has significance in the life of Chef Dominique. Our courses were a tribute to her mother and growing up in Brittany, France.
The dishes were absolutely fantastic. And just the perfect amount. Stand outs for us were the oysters, the mushroom ravioli, and the abalone dish as well as the bread with fermented butter course. I also forgot the add on caviar supplement. Definitely do this if it is offered. The wine pairings were excellent as well. Tyler was our sommelier and he was not only knowledgeable but very entertaining and unpretentious. The meal was very well paced and we were there for over 3 hours. We never felt rushed and truly enjoyed every course.
We had the privilege as well of not only touring the kitchen for Bar Crenn (which is the size of a closet) but the kitchen for Atelier Crenn as well. The staff were very accommodating and wanted to know what we thought about each dish. Just delightful from start to finish.
I would highly recommend this experience for any Foodie who is looking for a solid, tight menu full of delicious food and wine from start to finish with well trained staff. While the price is very high (our wine was more than the food), you get what you pay for. We will be back.
Eclectic but Delightful
Bar Crenn opened about 18 months ago and became instantly popular. So much so that it is hard to get reservations at any reasonable time. It’s adjacent to Dominique Crenn’s eponymous Michelin 3-star restaurant, Atelier Crenn. No small wonder reservations are difficult as the bar also serves as a waiting area to the main restaurant. It’s like a first class lounge before you embark on a well-thought out 345 USD 14-course flight at Atelier Crenn (plus you get a tour of the kitchen). The bar also serves as a way to offer an ala carte tasting menu at half the price without diluting the main restaurant’s offering. I say a tasting menu because portion sizes, while somewhat more than taste sized, are not always so much more. You’ll need 4-6 plates to make up a dinner and it prices out to about 150 USD per person. Most of the items we tried were perfect, including the heavenly brioche (10 USD but enough for two). There were clunkers. The Vol au Vent aux Legumes (puff pastry with vegetables) is essentially a mini-quiche with some greens and hardly worth 23 USD. The Cabillaud et Pomme puree fume (black cod etc) is a measly 100 grams (about 4 ounces) before cooking! At 37 USD it might as well be caviar. Otherwise, the rest of the menu is excellent. Wine is another story. Be prepared to plunk down 100 USD or more for a bottle. That’s not to say Bar Crenn is greedy. Indeed, most wines come with a typical 2-3x markup. The problem is that most are high quality wines that demand a high price. The online wine menu is current so I recommend you research which ones you want ahead of time. There is also a well priced cider and beer menu but I don’t think the food here goes with either one. The atmosphere is elemental, a perfect mix of personal service, low background jazz, and French sensibility. This is one of the most refined wine bars in SF. Dress accordingly, there is no need for jackets and designer dresses but sharp attire makes you and the place look great. Never mind that in SF you’ll get some sloppily dressed people; don’t fall into that rut. Seating is problematic. Most tables are lounge style knee high low tops and I find those difficult with food. If you’re only going to do mostly wine then any of those are fine. As a dinner outing, I would opt for counter seating. Make sure you ask for a particular seating style when you make your reservation. Bar Crenn is pricey but you definitely get what you pay for. I recommend you try it if your budget allows.

Upscale lounge where you feel like you are in Paris in 20”s. The food Eli’s excellence. Def try the cod, Ravioli, soufflé and brioche. Sorry Can’t speak to the wines. Service is fit for a foodie and your 20 percent service fee will pay for that service

First you should know that the menu is limited and the servings are small. This place is wine-forward. But the food is astronomical! Just order a lot of it, the prices are not obscene. The wine list skews expensive so be ready for that, but the selections are wonderful, and we were able to interact (and get advice from) not one but two sommeliers! Both well informed and congenial. But back to the food: just spectacular. Every dish was original, balanced, delicious. Novel ingredients (well, somewhat novel) were used to brilliant effect, not just as gimmicks. Very discrete use of smoke flavors enhanced a few dishes (I'm not big on smoke but these were PERFECT). Example: a mini tart with sea urchin and trout eggs. Every little bite was a slice of heaven. An egg with caviar, roasted beef bone marrow custard...you spoon out little aliquots of perfectly intense deliciousness. A crab salad (I don't like crab but humored my dining partner) was spectacular: ultra-fresh tasting, with excellent use of opposing flavors to create that perfect balance (yes, I'm really big on balance). And then a plate of mushroom ravioli. Deep, woodsy, but not overwhelmingly mushroomy (I LOVE mushrooms and if I were making this I would have blown it by going overboard with the mushroom intensity). Again, balance. Dessert was simple but perfect, a small pastry ("canelé") that was custardy on the inside and brûlė on the outide. And as if this weren't enough, the atmosphere itself is a work of art: heavy curtains, quiet, it cultivates a feeling of being slightly naughty, like a very respectable speakeasy. Minimal signage out front, and as you hesitantly approach the front door it swings open to a greeting of "bon soir." It sound precious but trust me it works, even for a hardened cynic like me. The whole evening as very low key, not a whiff of pretense, casual but classy. I can't wait to go back.

The menu changes frequently, but everything we tried was beautifully presented and palatable. Chef Crenn produces small plates for big bucks and the atmosphere is like a Parisian speakeasy with sheepskin covered stools, low-lying couches, and dim lighting. If you can stomach the bill, it is worth the visit.

Fantastic wine offerings, including Dom Perignon by the glass. It offers a limited menu of French food bites to pair with a fabulous libation. Excellent service, Parisian 1940s vibe, comfortable intimate dining salon & marble bar. Great place to enjoy a drink and wait for your reservation at Atelier Crenn. We’ll be back to spend more time and explore the menu.
