Another spectacular and pretty reasonably priced lunch at Benoit
My wife and I had lunch at Benoit New York last Thursday. It is a favorite. I or we visit once every month or two. The person at the host station said “welcome back. Let me show you to your regular table.” We have a regular table now! That is a thrill! My wife opted for the Benoit Burger, which runs in the low $20’s. She likes it a little and feels it is superior to our upscale burgers she has tried. I went for the set menu, opting for the two course version at $37. My furs5 course was swordfish cerviche, which was good. This was followed by the Beef Bordelaise. This was a sliced beef dish was an excellent sauce. It had a green salad on the side. The beef was probably a hanger steak or skirt steak. It was excellent! I ate it slowly and enjoyed every bite. We had a bottle of their Côtes du Rhône red, which is an excellent wine. It is $60 a bottle and a good value on the wine list. We shared a soufflé for dessert. It was excellent. Actually, I think I ate all of it. The bill was about $160 before tip. It was a spectacular meal. We intend to return.

I dined in the wine bar section which was very quiet and relaxing. Excellent customer service from the staff extremely attentive.

Excellent discovery I invited 4 customers to this restaurant that I didn't know. What a great discovery. First of all a warm and careful welcome, our server was Vincent, a Parisian exiled in NYC but in impeccable English. The room manager (I didn't ask for her name) drives her team excellently but with great discretion. Let's talk about the meal for the starters, Burgundy Escargots, Onion Soup, the flavors of France in the heart of NYC. In terms of dishes, we are spoiled for choice, for me it was the roast chicken, what can I say, the best chicken I have eaten in my life, so light how such a simple dish can still surprise us and well in this restaurant is possible. As for dessert, we decided to share the crème caramel, and the famous profiteroles, what can we say other than finish your dinner on a sweet and pleasant note. I recommend this table with fervor

We were so looking forward to revisiting Benoit after a 5* experience a few years ago, but we were really disappointed this time. The restaurant seemed very understaffed, as our server tried to take care of every table in sight, and several items we ordered didn't arrive. Meanwhile two other tables (of favored customers?) were doted upon by senior restaurant staff. The duck breast was fine although tiny and all alone on a big plate except for one little carrot (the menu says it's served with carrots plural). The truffle risotto was mispriced (more of course), and the house pate was dry and with little flavor. At these prices we expected so much better. It just seems as though Benoit has given up.

Four of us had brunch at Benoit. What a delightful experience! The wait staff are very professional, attentive, knowledgeable and friendly, and the food was quite good. It's a charming place.

Just had one of my most memorable dinners ever. Chef Alberto Marcolongo is a genius who masters the challenge of serving impeccable classic cuisine while also innovating in presentation and taste. The head sommelier is a consummate professional with incredible knowledge and panache. Wow, and thank you all for an unforgettable evening
Be the first to ReplyA great restaurant, but the price fixed lunch was disappointing
On Wednesday I had lunch in New York at Benoit. This is a favorite restaurant when we are in New York. It is very elegant, in the French bistro style. The service is great. The atmosphere is great. The food is generally great. They have brought back their two or three course set lunch menu. This runs about $39 and $45. I mentioned “generally great” But this time the set lunch menu was disappointing. The appetizer was grilled shrimp over taboulli. The two shrimp were small, probably the 21-25 per pound size. The entree was spaghetti carbonara. The pasta was homemade, but not spectacular. However, the bread they serve is great. The goureres they serve upon arrival were wonderful and the Madelines they offer at the end of the meal were great. All these extras are included. Wines are fairly priced, even reasonable for New York. They have a nice cores du Rhone red at $60/bottle. If I had the meal to do over again, I would have ordered the cassoulet. This is one of their signature dishes. It is enormous and runs $45. Maybe next time! I plan on returning, sooner rather than later.

We chose this restaurant for Christmas day. Cold welcome, the second floor where we were seated seems like a different restaurant: dark, empty, it looks like a mountain hut. Excessive staff, rude maitre when we said we didn't need his help. Absurd markup on wines. Flavors of the dishes are flat, the final millefeuille with a truly annoying burnt aftertaste. I wouldn't recommend it considering the excessive cost and the quality found. Like many restaurants in New York, it feels like we're stuck in the 80s.

Very good service, food good, the escargot great. They were quite attentive and though the place was crowded is was not very noise - recommend
Be the first to ReplyDon't let the association with a multi-Michelin starred chef fool you.
Alain Ducasse has probably never actually been here. What a disappointing experience! The dining room was as loud as an Irish pub during the World Cup. The tables were crammed together so tightly, the lighting didn't provide anywhere near an "intimate" or relaxing feel, and generic club music played in the background. We sat for 20 minutes before an order was taken and anything but water was brought to the table. When we did order, I was told we couldn't order the starters and then put our food order in afterward. I guess because the food was so overpriced and mediocre that if we'd just ordered starters we might have stopped there. So how was the food- nothing was terrible but nothing was really unique or memorable either. Diner/chain restaraunt quality food with fine dining prices. The pomme frites were just sad, they could've been purchased at the McDonalds down the block and reheated. The baguette was stale and chewy. My husband liked his smoky Negroni but the Meet me in Pear-is cocktail was basically lemonade and vodka masquerading as a craft coctail. Skipped out on the dessert- the tarte tatin looked delicious- because we couldn't handle the rowdy atmosphere anymore and didn't want to be let down by another sub-par course. I would not go back and definitely would not recommend this place. Ducasse may have more Michelin stars than any other chef in the world, but this place will never have one.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
This experience was such a disappointment from start to finish. The hostess was completely miserable, which should have been an omen of things to come. Luckily the servers were all super friendly, so that was a plus. The food was mediocre at best. We sampled several apps, small plates, and desserts. We weren’t very hungry, so we skipped entree courses, which was probably to our advantage. We tried the roasted cauliflower and it was awful. It had a blatant freezer burn taste, was mushy, and the sauce for it was just totally off putting. The other sides were just average. The fois gras was tasty, but super dense and hard. The mackerel, parsnip veloute, and pork rillettes were the only good components of our meal. For dessert, we had the affogato and found a piece of lettuce in the bowl. We also tried the lemon gelato, which was so sour that it was totally inedible, and the chocolate gelato, which was improperly spun and loaded with ice crystals. I’m strongly suggesting that someone- ANYONE- actually taste the recipes used for the dishes here. Seriously. No decent restaurant would knowingly put out dishes that are this unpleasant.

We had lunch at Benoit on Friday as part of our pre Valentine’s weekend in New York City. This was our first stop, because it is our favorite French restaurant in the city. It is very elegant, the type of place with starched white tablecloths and attentive service. Prices are not low, but pretty reasonable for midtown Manhattan. I had the steak tartar, which runs about $34.00. It was excellent. I ate it slowly, savoring every bite. My wife had the quenelles, which ran about $34.00. I tried some of hers. It was also excellent. For dessert, we ordered a soufflé. I think it ran about $14.00. It was excellent. Prices are up on the wine list. My $50 bottle of red wine from the Madiran is no longer on the list. I chose a red from Corbieres instead. It was about $65. It was excellent. We have not had any disappointing bottles at Benoit.

Benoit NY is probably our favorite New York restaurant. It’s my first choice when in town for business lunches or weekend visits with my wife. It’s elegant, but not stuffy or intimidating. It has a bistro type bar up front. The bar might actually have a zinc counter. We were a party of four for lunch, two couples. I had the cassoulet, which runs about $44 and is excellent. We had a bottle of a Madiran wine, from the southwest region of France. It runs about $50, which is a great deal. As an FYI, the wine list is primarily French and has great depth, but it is priced accordingly. The service is good. The pricing is fair, given the current environment. It’s a favorite. We have already made our next reservation.

A very nice French restaurant in NYC with a very comprehensive menu and wine cellar. The escargots, Le Cassoulet, Duck, wines and desserts… difficult to choose which one was the best! Nice cozy ambiance as well. Definitively a place to visit and have a nice dinner with your beloved one.
Be the first to Replyexquisite French restaurant; food & service
We came as a family group. The eservice was friendly, a bit formal, a friendly. We enjoyed the duck breast, streak tartar were especially good. The fish was very good. The French onion soup was excellent, told the best they have had. Wine, of course was fine as well. Not inexpensive, surely.

The service and ambience is very good and efficient. The menu has a good choice of French style cuisine which is executed well and perfectly cooked. There is a very large wine menu which is difficult to navigate. The wines were very expensive. We chose one at $85 which frankly tasted like a cheap bottle from a supermarket. Overall this restaurant is expensive and we didn’t feel that it was good value for money.

Recently had a quite disappointing meal at Benoit. Too bad, because it was the night of a special occasion. Chose Benoit because of the association with Alain Ducasse - it's a safe bet that he hasn't laid eyes on this place in years. Service was disjointed and distant. Annoyingly, however, they did try to move the pace of play along, which is certainly quite unlike what you expect from a true French restaurant. And, the menu was very limited, and the food itself was not that good, Bottom line, there are many better options in the city.

We chose Benoit because they had both chocolate soufflés & escargot. The food was DELICIOUS! However, the restaurant was so busy, the service was slow. Our waiter (who we only saw 2 or 3 times) tended to us quickly when we arrived. The remainder of the service was done by others. We had to get someone’s attention for drink refills, when we were ready for dessert & to get our ticket. We were there for 2-1/2 hours & should’ve been there 1-1/2 hours. The food was extraordinarily good, but the service not so much. Should’ve taken off 1 star for service, but the food was excellent.

Have been going to Benoit since we discovered its french local over 20 years ago. This last visit confirmed everything that Benoit does right. Service was efficient and attentive. Food was fresh (oysters) and perfectly prepared (foie, 1/2 chicken) and wine list varied and the French 75 cocktail was just perfect. Will keep going back!
Be the first to ReplyAnother grea5 experience at Benoit
I had lunch at Benoit with a friend last Wednesday. As usual, it was a ver6 good experience. We were also pleased to see the restaurant was pretty busy. Life is coming back to normal. The restaurant is light and airy. It has that bistro feeling, which is what they are going for. When you are seated they present two gougeres in a basket. We were asked what kind of water we liked. They are fine with tap water as your choice. We both moved directly into entrees. I ordered the duck, which was excellent. Substantial too. It ran about $38. It came with a large roasted artichoke heart. My friend ordered steak, which ran about $42. It came with a salad on the side. We ordered a bottle of red wine to go with lunch. They have a large wine list, focusing on French wines. The menu lists wine by the glass, but you want to check out the fill list. After studying the list I discovered a red from Southwest France that ran about $50. That is a good deal. We skipped dessert and asked for the check, but it’s worthwhile to point out they have chocolate soufflé on the dessert menu. It runs about $20 and takes 15 minutes to prepare, but how many places offer soufflés? Not many. They also have a selection of dessert wines by the glass. Are there negatives? It’s on the expensive side, but there is a reputation factor to consider. Benoit is an Alain Ducasse restaurant. He has multiple restaurants around the world, several with Michelin stars. Here’s something you need to know. They open at noon. Exactly at noon. You might be able to sit in the bar area and relax if you arrive at 11:50 AM, but no one gets seated until 12:00. Fo4 me, it’s an opportunity to study the wine list, which is presented on an iPad. Benoit is a favorite. I come back as often as I can.

Be the first to ReplyEmbarrassing
I hosted a dinner for 6 and midway thru the 1st course was embarrassed at having subjected my guests to my choice. The service was poor. After dropping off the menus and pouring water, the servers ignored us for the next 15 minutes. I had to ask miscellaneous staff roaming the floor to have our server come to take drink orders. Simple math was a problem. We were pleased to be served gougeres as an amuse bouche, but they brought 5 for our group of 6 and pushed back when I asked to correct the mistake. The kitchen is in serious trouble. The first course was served in stages. After a prolonged wait, 3 of us were served. Again, after multiple requests the rest of us were finally brought our food after a long delay. After speaking to the manager, the main course was served to all of us at the same time. But, this is the team that can’t shoot straight. One of the entrees had an unlisted ingredient my guest was allergic to. The server assured us that they would bring the replacement without the allergen, but by the time the rest of us had finished, it hadn’t arrived and we cancelled the order. The food is good, not great and certainly not worth suffering thru the poor service and a kitchen not up to the task. There are many wonderful restaurant choices in midtown. This is not one of them.

I go to New York twice a year. To change things up I decided to only go to French restaurants and Benoit was perfection. I like all the small attentions such as the warm delicious gougères, the B embossed on the butter, the fact that the bread basket had 2 types of bread. The Norwegian eggs were served on toasted brioche, different but oh so delicious. The sommelier brought me the bottle of which my glass of wine was to come from. The table was cleaned between each course. I never felt rushed, the tables were well spaced. Absolute perfection !

I recently met a friend for lunch at Benoit last week. We had a great t8me. It is always a good experience. Benoit opens at noon. Since I arrived early I needed to wait until they officially opened the dining room to be seated. No big deal. The wine list is on an iPad. It is extensive but easy to navigate. One drawback is the iPad signs out if you aren’t always active on it, so someone needs to sign you back on. I studied the listed beginning to end. Wines basically start about $65 but I found they had a red from Southwestern France at about $43. The wine steward said good things about it, so we ordered a bottle. It was fine. My friend ordered the skirt steak (about $37) and fries (about $11). He liked it a lot. I ordered the steak tartare ($33). It was excellent, as always. It came with a small salad. Service was attentive and friendly. Are there negatives? Prices are on the high side, but this is one of the top French restaurants in the City. It is a favorite of mine.
