Maybe unlucky
Service is fine. But I'd avoid the Castelfranco with parmesan £10.50 which is just 2 large lettuce leafs. Also avoid the Gnocchi with Girolles which tastes ok but looks so sad and not worth £16.80. And 2 small glasses of uninteresting house red. We had to leave after that to avoid further disappointment. £43 of disappointment. I do hope we just chose the wrong starters and that everything else if as wonderful as they say.
Be the first to ReplyGood as always but a complaint about the cooking
Would have preferred to write this as a direct email but it's not easy so in public it is. Great and fun lunch today as always, but three of our dishes (meat tagliatelle, sausages and shredded beef) were oversalted to a fault, while the fennel side tasted almost unseasoned.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic, authentic Italian
I came to Brutto for a birthday meal with my partner. Lovely ambiance, friendly service (they were clearly busy but nothing felt rushed) & great drinks menu. The food was nothing short of fantastic - authentic Italian dishes. We’ll be coming again - this really is a special restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyAverage food
I can’t understand the hype. Perhaps there was some vibe at lunch hour - happily busy, but the food was surprisingly average and very overpriced. Still cannot work out how they justify charging £16.20 for a small bowl of Tagliatelle al Ragu with a tiny bit of reddish sauce speckled with a few hard brown meaty pellets. Service was nice. I will not be rushing back though.

Been looking forward to coming here for ages. Evening started well, we were early and the front of house handled it perfectly…and then it kind of fell apart. We had the boy from the magic roundabout serving us. He took out drinks order and then came back to ask if we wanted some drinks a few mins later..wine came and it was warm. After the third time of me saying it was warm and him pretty much saying it will go cold, I said, I don’t want it to go cold later, I want to drink it now. Are there no cold bottles…he looked at me like I was stupid and said it will go cold again. About 20 mins later it’s was nearly cool enough. Shame the £40 vermentino was awful. Yes we are in London blah blah. Food came. Veg crudité which was basically a lump of fennel with a couple of radish and a foetus sized carrot. The lardo toasts were good. After asking for more water for the third time, magic roundabout looked at the table and said…oh I’ve taken your jug haven’t i?! Yes when I asked the first time! Mains came…pasta with a bone broth. Clap cold and pasta so underdone it was hard. Other dish was rare roast beef, cooked nicely enough and tasty smeared in a thick gravy. “Would you like dessert?” Errr no. I’m sure if they read this they will think we don’t know what we are talking about. Maybe we don’t. After spending our lives in the food and restaurant game, we know a little possibly. But the place is full and buzzy. So what do they care. The modern way is sadly becoming style over substance…but you can very quickly fall out of favour. Would we return? Nah.

This was my 4th visit and I wanted to share this experience with Jo, my friend of 45 years. We had table 34, which is my favourite as it is bang in the middle of the restaurant. We each had a £5 Negroni, which was delicious and shared a plate of "cuddles" - deep fried dough balls with soft cheese and prosciutto. My friend had pasta with rabbit and I had tortellini in broth. Both were exceptional. We ordered a carafe of house red and white. Sarah looked after us really well and remembered me from before, which was nice to know. It felt sad knowing that the founder of this marvellous restaurant Russell Norman is no longer with us but we raised a glass to him with affection.

The service has little experience. If you offer an Italian menu, the waiter must be able to take orders in Italian; otherwise, don't bother writing the menu in Italian if you expect the customer to translate it. The men restroom stinks so horrible that almost made me loose appetite. Possible that none of the managers can handle it? Does that show cleanliness in other places, such as the kitchen (which has a door next to the bathroom)? The food is adequate. The starter and the main course failed to impress. On our way out, hardly one said goodbye or even thanked us.

Sadly my twice yearly catch up at Brutto with a good friend and former colleague will be relocated after our most recent visit. Whilst the food was as expected, the same cannot be said for the service. Incredibly rude waitress who quite clearly wanted to be anywhere but serving us. We were made to feel like a huge inconvenience from start to finish. Constantly being told we had limited time, however having to wait 15 minutes before someone came over with a wine list, then having no plates when the shared food arrived. At the end of the meal we made it clear we didn’t want dessert and asked for a cocktail, then after a wait the waitress returned to see want we wanted for dessert… which we had already declined. After waiting for our cocktails, 10 minutes before our allotted time was up being aggressively told the table was needed back IMMEDIATELY. Never felt less welcome in a restaurant. Having always had nothing but praise for the place and recommending highly to all I shall now avoid and suggest others do the same. Classic case of a successful restaurant getting complacent and showing little care or courtesy to customers.

Booked my Birthday meal here Its always fully booked and you can only book 2 weeks in advance Its darkly lit with a lot of atmosphere The food tastes and feels authentic. Tried the anchovy with sough-dough, penne with tomato , beef strips and fig panna cotta with a carafe of house wine A lovely alternative evening

I had eaten here a couple of times before but my friend had never been. I knew she loved pasta and Negronis, so this was the obvious choice. We shared a plate of "cuddles"- deep fried savoury doughnuts, which come either prosciutto and soft cheese, which you stuff into the warm cuddles. My friend had penne in a vodka tomato sauce, which she loved and I had trofie in a cavolo nero and hazelnut pesto. The house Negronis are a bargain at £5 each. We had a lovely, leisurely meal. The Brutto team were very welcoming and friendly. Great value and excellent food.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday lunch
I booked this in person and mentioned that it was for my daughter's actual birthday and was assured we would get a lovely table and she would be made a fuss of. The restaurant was very busy we were seated next to a couple with a new born baby and we were initially worried but the couple were delightful and their 13 day old baby was a sweetheart. We started with a Negroni (a bargain at £5 and so good) and we shared a plate of cuddles with prosciutto and soft cheese. These are lovely light doughballs, which we split open and stuffed with cheese and ham. Although we had saved up for this lunch, it was more expensive than we would normally spend but we wanted to experience a full meal, so we didn't order from the wine list as the wines were over our budget but had a carafe of house white for £15. We shared penne con vodka, which was unctuous and a taglierini with pork and sage. This was a bit rich for me but my daughter liked it. We then ordered a carafe of house red (we spent £30 on wine altogether, which was still cheaper than ordering a bottle from the menu) and shared sirloin steak with radicchio. Steak was tender but would have liked the radicchio to have been dressed. Tap water had a £1 charge and this goes to Water Aid.We were not rushed and although staff were efficient, they hadn't acknowledged my daughter's birthday, and I felt sad for her. I follow Brutto on Instagram and when I got home, I messaged them to express my dismay. They immediately replied and said it was an oversight and asked for my daughter's address, so they could send her a little something, which was a lovely response. A really delicious meal in a cool venue. We will start saving up for our next visit.

My daughter and I came here for her birthday lunch. The restaurant is atmospheric and welcoming. We had a Negroni (a bargain at £5) whilst we looked at the menu. We decided to share a plate of "cuddles", which were delicious fried dough balls with soft cheese and prosciutto. The idea is to split the cuddle and fill it with cheese and prosciutto. Delicious! We shared a carafe of house white and had penne con vodka and pork and sage tagliatelle. The penne was perfect, with lots of sauce. The tagliatelle was a little greasy for our palate. We then ordered a sirloin steak with radicchio to share and a carafe of red wine. When we got the bill, I was surprised to see we had been charged £1 for tap water. I have been in restaurants where this has happened but they always say it is for Water Aid and I have no problem with that but this just looked like a payment to the restaurant, which seemed a bit mean, especially as we spent £114 for lunch. When I made the booking, I had said that it was for my daughter's birthday, so was a little disappointed that the staff hadn't acknowledged this in any way, so I messaged the restaurant via Instagram when j got home and got an immediate apology and was asked for my daughter's address,so they could send her a little something, which I appreciated.
Be the first to ReplySomewhat overhyped
Can't say I was too impressed by the restaurant. My cousin had heard of it and thought we might try it. The atmosphere was nice though a little bit..incoherent, one side trying to be traditional Italian (checkered tablecloth, wood, pictures on the walls) and the other trying to be more modern with a kind of off-putting mural on the wall. Staff was nice and tried to accommodate everyone. However the food was a bit overpriced for what actually came, I mean...13 pounds for three little slices of cheese and a tasteless raw pear is stretching it.. the sirloin steak was nice, though it was just placed on some lettuce with nothing else to accompany it on the plate. Fennel was nice. Cocktails were average. With the whole of London to explore I don't think I'll be revisiting .
Be the first to ReplyVery weird, very disappointing, very overpriced
I can’t quite believe we paid so much money for a few pieces of cheese that might as well have been brought from the local supermarket and plonked down on a plate with some sliced up pear, the kind you find at the bottom of your fridge when you’re clearing it out and trying to use things up. We struggled through the cheese, and asked the waiter for some bread to go with it, to try and wash it down. It took the waiter 10 minutes and two reminders to get the bread, which finally appeared. It was ok. The second course arrived and it was even weirder than the first. Nice sirloin diced up on shredded radicchio with nothing else in between to bring the ingredients together to create any kind of ‘dish’. It felt like the chef had just given up or was incredibly depressed or something, there was no soul to the food, which is a travesty if you think about the true nature of Italian food. The tiramisu was good, the only highlight of the meal. I have lived and eaten in Italy many times and I can honestly say the food at this restaurant is not that of a typical trattoria. It’s also horrendously over priced. Again a contradiction of everything a trattoria should be.
Be the first to ReplyGood vibe meets overhyped food
We were really looking forward to this meal due to all the buzz and how hard it was to get a reservation. This anticipation possibly made us expect more from the meal. Atmosphere is absolutely 10/10, love the red checked tablecloths, candles and buzzy vibe. I ordered a dirty martini which came as a simple dry martini rather than dirty - in fairness I didn’t bother to raise this with the server, but it wasn’t my preferred cocktail. The fried dough balls with cheese and prosciutto were very tasty. We both had pastas to start and both found them disappointing - the vodka pasta and tortellini in brodo could easily be recreated elsewhere. They were nice, just not outstanding or memorable. Sliced sirloin for me (bit cold and flavourless), sausages and lentils for husband (absolutely fine), roast potatoes that tasted like they were cooked earlier that day and a green salad that never turned up and was removed from the bill. It was all FINE, but I think we expected more. Would go again without reservations, if I could swan up to the bar and enjoy a £5 negroni or two and some fried dough balls and olives. Great atmosphere, lovely service — just felt like the food itself wasn’t the highlight.

Loved it and will go again. Food was delicious - I had the beef stew which was melt in the mouth. Also try the dough ball style starter which are like mini savoury doughnuts and very moreish. Loved everything about this place, service also great. Highly recommend

Checked table cloth makes me happy ,slow( charming) service unhappy ,and reasonable prices (by London standards ) are a bonus these days …. But it’s the food we go to restaurants for and on that front it failed to satisfy my hunger for good rustic Italian fare . I had Cannellini beans & oregano toasts consisting of 3 small crispy slices of bread topped with mashed cannellini beans flavoured wit oregano ( £7.80) . Nice but £7.80 !really ? My second was Rabbit pappardelle flavoured with lemon (£16.20).Now ,I wouldn’t mix rabbit “raggu”with lemon but I thought, I give it a try .Result : while the pasta itself was perfectly cooked the raggu was more of an afterthought and failed to bond with the pasta the way a good raggu should . And finally ,Tiramisu (£9.20) was a bit of watery affair and tasted odd . My friends and guests had deep fried dough balls with prosciutto &Stracchino(£12.40)6 dough balls with creamy stacchino cheese ramequin on the side and ribbons of ham ,Castelfranco ,shallots and hazelnuts ( £8.00) and shared grilled Florentine T bone steak (£9.50 per 100gr ) .All that hardly rocket science but the meat was tender enough …. Washed down with quaffable house red and fizzy water . Good but not great .

Enjoyable evening, Wonderful food and lively atmosphere. Highlights were the tagliatelle with mushrooms and for someone who is not much of a eat eater, the steak which was perfectly cooked and succulent . The best steak I've had in years

Dinner for four on a cold January 2023 evening between 7.30 and 9.30 pm. Total cost: £269.82. Table at back of restaurant. Lovely buzz to the place, our son and daughter 27 and 24 immediately liked the atmosphere, the muzak was loud but not very. An enjoyable evening. We had: Four house negronis at a fiver each: bargain, great start. Antipasti: Really nice dough balls with parma and cheese (best thing) Crostini fegatini-chicken liver (nice but not authentic Tuscan), Rabbit pappardelle, mushroom papardelle, tagliatelle al ragu: first rate, medium sized portions, all wolfed down small green salad: fine Main: Bistecca (tbone) divided between 4 , (900g = £86.00) - nicely presented, wanted it rare and came reasonably rare, could have had a little more flavour to the grilling, but very good. Meat not quite all'altezza di una vera bistecca fiorentina, pero..... Roast potatoes: delicious Fennel gratinato: my wife said delicious Dessert: tiramisu excellent - clearly fatto in casa; sgroppino excellent two carafes of house red: £30-good, nothing special All in all, not bad. My negatives: It lacks a little Italian something, none of the staff seemed Italian. A tad pricey. And I just cannot stand being served food on little canteen side plates, an innovation brought in years ago by the River Cafe and which no quality restaurant in Italy would put up with. Why do we do this ? Positives: affordable red wine, food of good quality, I suspect there are other things on the menu I'd really enjoy. I preferred it to Luca round the corner which is crazily expensive. Definitely better han River Cafe which is madly expensive now. And the atmosphere in there is great. Last thing: if you go in the evening you can park easily and cheaply. The signs say you only can only park for two hours but they're wrong. I'll go back.

It is difficult to get a table here and we were on the waiting list and told at the last minute. It is an atmospheric and busy place with a large bar where you can also eat. The menu certainly needs a bit of explanation and there was also steak on the blackboard for £96/kg. They do a good Negroni but there seem to be 3 versions so be careful ordering. The food is very good and not your usual Italian - so forget pizza or veal. We had a full menu with wine and it came to £165 with service for 2. The wine was £48 with the usual quadruple mark-up compared to shop prices. Beware that the tables for 2 are very close together and we had one right next to a square building column which, although giving some privacy, was a little claustrophobic. The tables for 4 however seemed fine.

Helpful and friendly service, quality drinks, loved the bean and rosemary broth, sausages and lentils stellar, bistecca bueno, all round quality lunch.
Be the first to ReplyI loved this place!
I arrived half an hour before the restaurant opened tonight, and was warmly welcomed by Mr Norman himself and was served their £5 Negroni ( or two) while waiting for my son to arrive. We shared a superb T- Bone steak, preceded by two excellent pasta courses. Service was top notch. We shall return with my grandson next month, so that three generations of the family can enjoy this top class experience.

Had such a wonderful meal with my best friend here! The dishes are simple but delicious, the staff were friendly and the service was quick! Fully recommend.
Be the first to ReplyRude service, tiny table, rushed out
I’d heard such good things about Brutto, and then getting a table feels like winning a prize so was really looking forward to a catch up with friends. The table for four was tiny, luckily the plates of food were so small or they wouldn’t have fitted on the table. The bread with anchovies was good but the pasta was pretty average and the tirumisu was watery. Service was dismal unfriendly and un charismatic. After our tirumisu had arrived we were informed that the booking was for one hour 45 minutes, and we were told that if we wanted anything else we should order it now as they’d “turn the table round” in fifteen minutes time. The bill was then deposited on the table and one hour 45 after we’d arrived a server appeared with a card reader. This was in-spite of there being quite a few empty tables in the restaurant. Some of the larger chain restaurants have a one hour 45 turn around but only if they’re busy or there is a queue outside. There’s no justification for this and all in all it left a bad taste in our mouths. What a shame as it could have been so so so much better.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a Shame
My friends and I had been waiting to visit Trattoria Brutto for ages and finally (due to its, I think, mad booking policy) got a table. Well tbh it was not worth the wait and I left disappointed and shocked by the attitude of some of the staff. I am a bit of a foodie, but no expert but I am a self-confessed Italophile that has lived in Italy so I would say I know a little about Italian food. And, all I can say is everything from the food to the waiting staff was very average. The mark-up on the wine list was outrageous and except for our waitress who was smart, accommodating and worth every penny of the tip the rest of the staff, especially senior managers, came across as arrogant, rude and if it was all too much trouble. Will not be visiting again.
