A must see
Chandeliers everywhere. Felt we had gone back in time. So grand. Right on square. Cakes were superb. Expect to pay more. But such a lovely treat.
Be the first to ReplyDoubled the prices since 2023
Used to be my favorite. But since my last visit they’ve doubled the prices. Now, the cakes cost around 10 eur, if you eat in. If you just take away, they will cost 5 eur, what was the price in 2023 (when I last visited). Don’t really get this huge price increase and feel I would literally be ripped off. I guess I will have to chose a new place for cakes in Budapest.

Lemonade with undefrosted fruit... flavorless Hungarian cake. It's expensive just for the frame which is quite beautiful but not wow Brief tourist trap...
Be the first to ReplyGreat place, with delicious food - but expensive
The place is super nice and what they do is really good. But it also costs a lot. We had a light lunch which was really delicious. But would probably recommend that you come there for one of their cakes instead
Be the first to ReplyTourist -trap far to expensive
Nice place, but they rip you off -definitly became a tourist -trap. Had the most expensive cafe and water of my life -used to be a nice place but I will never go there again in my life

Renowned pastry shop in the center. Large assortment of desserts, coffee and drinks. Classic ancient but well preserved environment. Helpful and multilingual staff. Truly delicious pastas.

Had sort of a brunch at Gerbeaud again, and again were not disappointed. Fabulous setting and location, excellent service, and great food and drinks. This is one of the places in Budapest that never fails to meet and excel expectations.
Be the first to ReplySuper nice cafe in Budapest
A visit here is a must if you are in Budapest. Fantastic environment with crystal chandeliers on the ceiling. Lots of good things on the menu. Highly recommended.

We went to this cafe on the first day, as soon as we arrived in Budapest, because I wanted to eat Princess Sissi's favorite cake. The Dobos cake honestly disappointed me a little.... We took a slice of that and another cake, very beautiful in the shape of a rose, with meringue. Even good but not superlative as I read in some comments. The two cakes accompanied two coffees. The environments were very beautiful and elegant, like the old cafes of the past, the waitresses perhaps a little unfriendly for it being only 9.30 in the morning. The bill was decidedly disproportionate... €31.... For having gone out without the ecstasy of the palate

delicious cakes, elegant setting and friendly staff. The bill is a little salty but it's worth trying these cakes
Be the first to ReplyGreat place!!
It's delicious and a very nice place! I can imagine Emperess Sissi walking there! Everything we ordered was delicious and very well presented.
Be the first to ReplyLovely old cafe
We wanted the classic cafe experience so decided to try here. There was no queue. We were shown to a nice table. We were served quickly. The server was attentive. Our cakes were delicious as was the coffee. Very nice surroundings. A lovely experience.
Be the first to ReplyWay overpriced tourist trap
Nice but very very overpriced. 4000 HUF (~£10) for a piece of cake, 2000 HUF (~£5) for the cheapest coffee (cappuccino). Not worth it in my opinion. Regretted not going to the better value but inviting looking Edison & Jupiter round the corner!
Be the first to ReplyExpensive
It’s expensive, but that’s expected and it’s full of old world charm. We had 2 teas, 2 cakes and it came to about £34. A one time treat and thoroughly enjoyed. The toilets left much to be desired though and were smelly and dirty.

You won't find any Hungarian in here. This place is a notorious tourist trap that capitalises on foreigners not being conscious on the prices they charge in the local currency. We went with 4 people and ordered one coffee and a slice of cake each. The cake is good, though not extraordinary, and the portion is tiny. How much did they charge us for that? £64 (€72). Someone on minimum salary would have to work the best part of a week for this which is why you won't find any locals in here. This is unjustifiable for a beautiful city like Budapest where food normally is decently priced (A fresh Hungarian chimney cake is £1.60 in the city, just to put things into perspective). Tourist trap. Never again.

I have read the other reviews very carefully. I must admit it is pricey but I knew that before I enter. I wanted to treat myself to quality cake and coffee and knew what I was paying for. No need to use hate words here. Overall I was pleased with the experience as the staff were very kind, i loved the live music (although I would prefer a big old piano in such a historical cafe), I would love to try another cake and I would drink coffee again there. Not only for the taste, but also to be a part of history. When you realise, what this business has been through and yet survived, you can't be anything but in awe for these people. Thank you for gifting us this beautiful experience.
Be the first to ReplyBest to be avoided
Like in any city, there are Must Dos and Must be Avoided in Budapest. Café Gerbeaud definitely belongs to the places to be avoided. I was there after lunch time. It was almost empty and I felt lost in this large café. 3 to 4 tables are taken by tourists only. Service was lazy and prices are ridiculously expensive. 3400 HUF for a very small Sacher cake. That is just a rip-off.

Utterly delightful experience. Very tempting and delicious fare. Very fin de siecle atmosphere. Very worthwhile indeed and I would strongly recommend it
Be the first to ReplyWell worth a visit
Expensive drinks and cakes. Worth a visit as steeeeeped in history. Staff look much smarter than New York Palace Cafe. However ..... it looks shut from outside ! Need to push past curtains to get in. Loved it.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful 19th Century Cafe
The restaurant is beautiful inside, but the food is just average at best. Their coffee is 5 stars good, and the the Grand Tokaj (dessert wine) is excellent, but over priced. The food is nothing to brag about, by the time we got ours it was ice cold. The cakes (we had a Hungarian sampler) were a huge disappointment as they are only sweet and hard to distinguish the different flavors. We got a bread basket with butter, but the butter was unsalted… don’t these people know that unsalted butter is for baking and cooking only, not to serve with bread? The service is friendly, but a bit slow. The prices and portions here are way more reasonable than the New York Cafe, but the food isn’t much better. If you go during summer, go in the morning if you want to seat inside. The place has no air condition (and if it does, it was off when we went), and it gets very hot in there. Can’t recommend this place…
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful cafe, go inside for the decor!!!!
Stopped here for a quick lunch and drinks. We all had the goulash soup, coffee, and their famous dessert. It was an "all in one" item on the menu. The soup was amazing! The coffee was yummy! The dessert...well, I didn't care for it but my 3 friends loved it so don't take my word on that! Go see it!
Be the first to ReplyOld Budapest at its finest.
Super friendly staff, tasty brunch, everything that we had ordered was fresh. An old coffeehouse in city center. For sure hundred times better than New York Cafe. We also try the traditional cake of Budapest Dobos and was also super tasty. Recommend.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing!
Brilliant! The hot chocolate was easily one of the best we’ve ever had and the cakes we had were amazing too. We tried the New York cafe during our trip and in all honesty we much preferred it here, there was a small line when we arrived but we weren’t waiting too long before we were seated and we’ll defiantly be back next time we’re in Budapest.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed given the hype
We called in for a coffee and cake whilst passing through the centre. My partner wanted to stop as it’s advertised as the place to go for cake etc. Disappointed that it’s possibly the worst place we called in in our time in Budapest. Everything else was amazing.
Here though my amaretto coffee was served cold which they then sorted and came back hot. The Dobos cake tasted stale and service was generally quite poor.
We are calling in the New York palace before flying back hope it’s not the same!
Amazing cakes!
Coffee and cake in an old fashioned cafe with its own piece of history. Grand décor and great service. A little on the pricy side but worth it. Something a little different and a lovely atmosphere.
