I used to frequent this restaurant years ago but couldn't remember why I stopped going. Well, after giving it a try last night I can recall: Ridiculously high wine and food prices that do not at all reflect the quality of the food. While the second floor patio is lovely on a summer evening; it doesn't make up for all the other inadequacies. We shared the vegetable mezze platter that was totally uninspired with insipid stuffed grape leaves, cheap olives and limp, cold pita bread. I can deal with that but what was really disappointing was the Moussaka, a Greek eggplant casserole. For starters, it was blackened around the edges. The sous chef or whoever didn't peel the eggplant skin leaving a bitter taste. It was also infused with potato slices, which I had never seen in a Moussaka before last night. The bechamel topping was barely apparent, probably burnt off. Overall, a disaster for $24. And then there is the matter of the service. The waiter was absent for long periods of time and it took an hour or more for our entrees to arrive. Finally, the wine prices are outrageous. Talk about gouging. Maybe you can find a couple under $50 but not many. I believe that is inexcusable in California.
So you would be wise to pick another restaurant in Old Town or elsewhere rather than Santorini. And if you crave a summer night's breeze then enjoy it on your own patio or another outdoor space. Because what does it say when a Greek restaurant can't cook one of the signature dishes of Greece?
