What a lovely space! Located in a turn of the century
What a lovely space! Located in a turn of the century former train station, this restaurant is filled with charm! Every worker we encountered was so polite and friendly and competent, especially our waitress. The menu has something for everyone from salads and burgers to more formal steak and pasta dishes. I had the California Cobb salad and it was yummy and just enough. Don has a po'boy with oysters and fries and loved it. Everything was just lovely and the price was right too! Enjoy!

After struggling to find parking for approximately ten minutes, we finally arrived on time for our reservation and checked in with the Host. There was no other communication from the Host. After a few minutes, I asked when our table would be ready. He responded, maybe ten to fifteen minutes. When I questioned the estimate, he replied, "We have over 100 reservations." This is unacceptable. If we had arrived at our reservation 15 minutes late, I would have expected them to have canceled my reservation. After a 20-minute wait at the bar, we were finally texted for our table. The wait staff and the food did improve our experience. However, I found the menu to be relatively uninventive. The cocktail menu listed the beer taps by brewery name only without mentioning the beer style on tap. In conclusion, our overall experience was underwhelming. Parking was too difficult, and the menu was unimpressive. We are unlikely to return. (Review cross-posted on YELP)

My family and I have enjoyed dining at CD for many years in both Charleston and Columbia. However, during each of the last few visits, the menu is getting more and more limited and the portions are shrinking too. I'm also finding that CD is losing its upscale ambience to becoming more like a chain Applebee's or Chili's with a loud atmosphere and less formal interactions with the waitstaff. Food was decent but overall experience today was less than mediocre. California Dreaming is losing the standard it used to have; therefore, sending loyal patrons elsewhere.

Absolutely amazing. Can NOT beat it. We come here all the time and are NEVER disappointed
Be the first to ReplyFun location in old train station.
Consistently good meal. Try the California Dreaming salad. And the croissants are amazing!!

I just want to take the time to say what wonderful customer service this restaurant has! Not only was our service wonderful but the food was delicious as well.. we were visiting from out of town and I left my purse there. Ugh! All I did was call and the manager mailed it to me free of charge and I received it two days later with nothing missing! To me this is going over and beyond to make your customer happy! Good job guys... recommend highly!!!
Be the first to ReplySo here's the experience.
We called to get a reservation (7) for this past Sunday for 2:45, guy on the phone was super pleasant and professional. We get to the restaurant and wow, parking was a beast. Once we found parking, walked into the restaurant and it was super packed in the lobby, couldn't figure out if people were waiting to get to the hostess or not. Finally checked in and waited maybe 15 minutes or so. Not bad, but you can see other customers experiences while you're waiting on your table. It seems some waited for the entire time we were standing there without a waitress, waiter getting their drink order. Finally got seated in a very dirty booth. It's like would they want to sit there...probably not! The hostess said it was cleaned...no ma'am it was not! Waitress came right away to get our drink orders and we mostly had a lot of sweet tea orders. Drinks came and the tea was unsweetened. Waitress said she must've gotten the tea before it was sweetened. What?!? I've never been a server or worked in a restaurant so I'm not sure how true that is. Anywoo apps, salads came, everything tastes great. BTW our server brought us sugar packets instead of bringing us actual sweet tea. So the main entrees came and there was a hair on my relative's burger, that's a turnoff for sure. The refire of the burger took another 25 minutes. The waitress apologized but let me tell you, the experience was exhausting. We wanted dessert but knew it would take forever. The waitress got our card for the bill (no printout, all electronic) and stands right there waiting and looking at you leave a tip. We always tip well but the service since Covid has been going downhill over time. We got to finally leave around 5pm. We usually order takeout to restaurants and probably won't be back to what used to be the iconic California Dreaming for a while!!
Be the first to ReplyFood is wonderful, noise level is high.
Service depends on time of day and location. Our favorite is the crab soup and house salad and, of course, the croissants!
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming.
No crab in the she crab. Wilty overdressed salad. Burger was sad and over cooked.

Drove down from NC to visit the museum and see the sites in Columbia; a historical city that did not disappoint. When it was time to have some lunch I chose this place strictly because of the name...I left California 2 years ago. The restaurant is an old train depot and it is beautiful. The server was friendly and I liked that she smiled, she also gave us a brief story about the train depot when we inquired about the building. Everything on the menu looked yummy and I decided on the chicken tenders...they were sooooo delicious and the dipping sauce was amazing, kinda like honey mustard but so much better the fries were cut and cooked fresh and I dipped them in the sauce too I want to go back to Columbia and eat here again!

My girlfriends and I were in town for a concert and chose this location for dinner prior to the event. I made a reservation in advance and I am so glad I did. It was packed! Our group was seated in a cozy booth and our waiter approached us soon after. Our order was taken quickly and in such a fun, friendly manner. Zaid, our server, was attentive and went out of his way to ensure our dining experience was the best possible. My meal was good, but not great. The breading on the shrimp was a little too salty and my filet medallions were slightly over medium. The side salad with blue cheese was by far my favorite part of the meal.

The food here was amazing! I'm the type of person who loves getting served bread when I dine. When I saw they had honey butter croissants..baybay I was sold! They were big, flaky, and I didn't have to share. The grilled chicken sandwich with arugula, chefs kiss! I loved every bit. The inside is beautiful by the way. When I come back to Columbia, I'll be back to dine.

Came here for lunch so about noon, as we got there we were seated relatively quick there was 6 of us doing a birthday luncheon. We were seated in a booth 3 on each side?, it was roomy and I didn't feel like I was fighting for space. Restaurant was pretty packed aS it was lunch so we sat maybe 10 mins before our waitress came over and introduced herself. My first impression of her was she had a lot going on but not in a bad way! She was vibrant and very upbeat! She offered to get us all water and will be back to get us a drink order when she came back from getting the water. When she eventually came back we jus ordered our food. All of us ended up getting different types of salad. One of my coworkers ordered salad and potato soup, this order came out exceptionally fast. While my co worker sat there wondering whether or not she should start eating or wait for all of us to get their food the waitress did bring us a basket of bread, which was delicious and in addition to our order cost. I'm say about 10 minutes later our salads finally arrived (that was a good thing cause I was starving and noticed my eyes wondering to my co workers food, awkward). The presentation of the food was great! My salad was full of colors and the serving size could easily feed 2 ppl. That is 2 ppl that does not have my appetite. Throughout our meal our server did bring us refills on water and checked in on us periodically. Overall I give this restaurant 4 stars not 5 because I feel like timing could of been better with serving food. Coworker was pretty much done eating before we got our food. I recommend you go give it a try!
Be the first to ReplyIt's been bad the past few times I've gone but I've been
It's been bad the past few times I've gone but I've been going to California Dreaming since I was a kid and I want to love it. After tonight, I'm retiring this restaurant and trying other businesses that are newer and want to treat their patrons well. Tonight's experience: I ordered two salads with ranch. I received one with ranch and one with blue cheese. After sending the salad with blue cheese back and asking for a salad with ranch, our server told us okay, but that the kitchen staff had told him the salad had ranch on it. I let that slide on top of not receiving cutlery or extra dressing for the other customer (that we asked for three times), but when the bill came we were charged for three entrees. After I pointed this out, our server told us that it was because they were planning to "comp my meal", but somehow an extra entree was on the bill. Hmm... the icing on the cake was when the manager came out after all of this to tell the other member of our party that she "was the manager", "made the salad herself", and that she "knew that was ranch dressing." Whatever. She was welcome to taste mysalad because that was blue cheese. We also noticed a contaminant in our salad and the water was served in dirty glasses and tasted like wet dog. I will never ever go back.
Be the first to ReplyUsed to be a great spot.
I still love the building and the service is still great but the menu and food is a shell of what made this one of our favorite spots. Removing the classic nachos was a bad start but seeing things like prime rib and even more ridiculous the "cup" of soup get dropped is pretty bad. Not to mention the classic rising prices and reduced portion sizes and you just have a lost experience all together. We've been eating here for close to 40 years so I guess it has a good run and it's just time to move on.

I went to California dreaming on a Sunday night when I walked in the the place was packed. The people there were not that welcoming. Everybody was not that happy. When I sat down I waited for 15 minutes for my waitress to come. When I ordered my food I'm not gonna lie it tasted very good. When I asked my waitress for the check it took another 15 minutes to come. My rating I will give it 3 only because there food was good and they took me seriously.

This place has fell way off from its heyday. Avoid at all costs. Service and food is horrible. Shoneys is a better place to eat.
Be the first to ReplyAfter many wonderful visits to this great restaurant, today
After many wonderful visits to this great restaurant, today I was extremely disappointed. Arrived for an early dinner, place was pretty empty, but had to wait 10 min for the hostess to work on the table schedules. Waiter was outstanding. I ordered something different this time, Veggie Pasta. I asked for no onions, and the waiter asked the chef . . couldn't take them out. no big deal, I still got it. When my meal arrived, I picked out the onions . . nearly 1/3 cup. Then I tasted my entree . . It was horrible, there was absolutely no seasoning, because all I tasted was garlic and chunks of Romano or Feta Cheese. I put it aside. My husband had the Blackened Chicken Pasta . . he shared, it was delicious. Our house salads and she-crab soups were perfect. Upon leaving, stopped by the restroom. Filthy. Paper all over the floor, toilet paper on shelves in the stalls, nothing on the rollers, and lastly, no paper towels to dry your hands.

Good food, terrible service! The hostess was rude and actually rolled her eyes when I requested to be seated in a booth if possible. Once our waitress finally came to our table to take our drinks orders she left left and proceeded to deal with her other 2 tables completely forgetting to bring us our drinks. Our apps came out, we had to ask twice for silverware/napkins... we thought things were looking up but then our salads came without dressing our waitress went to get the dressings and immediately our entrees came out (before we even had our salad dressing) when I questioned our waitress about the timing she just said "yeah, that shouldn't have happened" and turned and walked away. We never received drink refills the next time we saw our server was when she dropped off the check. Absolutely terrible service and no manager in site. Also, I'm not sure what was going on but the hostess was more concerned with covering the top of the hostess stand with taped together trash bags rather than helping customers.

Fathers Day, mild wait 30-40 maybe, got lucky and sat at the bar, ordered a beer and a ribeye MR salad and potato. Came out well done. Mistakes happen, unfortunately I couldn't get anyone's attention to even tell, so I ate the potato and salad. Then pushed the steak off and put silverware on top of it so they knew it was done, asked how it was, then, oh yeah that's over cooked. We'll, it's been over an hour, ready to roll. Still paid a portion of my bill, lol. Then left. First time. Last time. Even if it was just a random mistake, happens all the time to the best places, but the decent ones at least check back to see how a steaks cooked
