Brilliant - as always.
As always the food and service was impeccable.Only downside - people wearing flip flops. Come on folks, we can do better than that!
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyable first experience of peranakan cooking
We had a very enjoyable evening in this Michelin guide restaurant sampling peranakan cuisine for the first time, a wonderful fusion of Malaysian , Indonesian and Chinese cooking. The restaurant had a relaxed vibe and with friendly and attentive staff. We were not hungry enough to attempt the multicouse ah mah kase menu so opted for 2 starters of Ngoh Hiang and Pork Satay from the ร la carte and these were delicious. Then we had two mains of Chefs Mumโs chicken curry and Beef Rendang and these were superb. Pricing for these dishes was reasonable but entry level wine is expensive at $110 Overall highly recommended although about 30 mins taxi ride from central Singapore
Be the first to ReplyUnique and one of its kind for Michelin level peranakan food. Great for visitors who love SE Asian cuisine.
A very special and unique dining experience. Excellent service from staff who are passionate about peranakan cuisine. We learnt loads about the flavours and cooking styles. My parents (who used to live in Asia) loved every moment and the staff were super kind and attentive to them in particular. Massively recommended if you are looking for something a little different but authentic.

Everything was divine, the drinks, the food and the service. Will be dreaming of the wingbean salad, auntys chicken curry, ramen and desserts until our next visit. Our friends had recommended Candlenut to us and we are so glad we booked in advance as it is the best restaurant weโve had the pleasure of dining at in Singapore. As frequent visitors to Singapore we have visited quite a few.
Be the first to ReplySplendid Service
Splendid service! I was there, by myself, at the end of the lunch service just before the staff went off to their Christmas party. ... and still the staff were wonderful, attentive without being intrusive, clearly passionate about the food and the experience. Making sure that everyone felt welcome - even a solo Ozzie there at an inconvenient time. The food was good too. Varied, flavourful and full of subtlety. A Michelin starred restaurant specialising in the local cuisine. Well worth a visit for that alone. But I have eaten in a lot of top class restaurants - and this time I will remember the staff and how dedicated they were to the experience long after the memory of the food has blurred. The staff we simply outstanding.
Be the first to ReplyGreat dinner
We had dinner here. A truly enjoyable experience. A cuisine we had not eaten before presented in many small dishes to share at a reasonable price and with very friendly and swift service. Not all dishes necessarily hit the mark but the blue swimmer crab curry was awesome and when we told the waiter we are crazy about this dish, he brought us another helping. Great service. Impressive wine menu. Only point of critique was that so many different dishes were brought out at the same time that they got cold before we ate them all. Plate warmers would have helped. Also, the dishes were mixed in terms of fish/meat and spices and flavours that it was really difficult to find a matching wine. You almost had to have a red and a white on your table at the same time to drink with the changing dishes.
Be the first to ReplyGood Peranakan Food!
A very nice experience for my family and I. The food and service were good. The food portions were a bit small but nontheless, it was enough for 4 of us. The chefs have brought a twist to Peranakan food. The desserts are to die for.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing and Disappointment
Dinner was disappointing. I attended dinner with a few American guests who are visiting Singapore for the first time. A morning tour at the shop houses of Emerald Hills acted as a build up for Peranakan dishes so everyone was excited. All of us have multiple prior Michelin Starred restaurant experiences so we know the benchmarks. Experience: Immediately after being seated , some of us felt that the A/C vent above our table was blowing too hard. The lanterns were swaying. One of the guests had a nice bare shoulder dress and had to switch seats. I had to inform our server about it and AC was turned down. Normal restaurant may be forgiven but not a Michelin one. Chairs have a rattan cheap feel , light weight and uncomfortable. One of us was bitten by a mosquito while eating. I understand that we are in Dempsey area but sheesh. I had to leave my seat and whisper to the server to turn up the AC again to hopefully remove the mosquito. The worst of all, there was a private event of some kind happening in the same hall blasting music, people yelling and dancing. I was so pissed and embarrassed for my overseas guests that I had to make excuses that maybe the food will speak for itself . Service Another disappointment. The older gentleman serving us can barely speak fluent English. No explanation of dishes and ingredients as you would typically find in an establishment of this stature. His compatriot was more knowledgeable but I had to prompt her into explaining what the Buah Keluak fruit is and how our Buah Keluak fried rice is made. There is no scraping of crumbs off table and serving of dishes have no coordination or purpose. The overall feel is no different from eating at any typical restaurant. Food We ordered anything that was recommended and almost everything on the menu. Besides the black colored Buah Keluak fried rice ( after my intentional prompt to fish a broken Singlish story out of the server to explain how the poisonous Buah Keluak is used to cook it) nothing stands out. In my opinion, the chicken in Mamaโs curry should have been boneless and presented more beautifully. Our drumstick had gristle in itโฆ.which was a big turnoff. None of us enjoyed our dinner. Afterthought I find myself having to make excuses throughout the meal to defend my dinner choice and back the restaurant who fell flat to impress my guests. We only had time for 3 planned dinners in Singapore and this one failed us. We would understand if this were one of the Michelin cheap eats but our dinner bill doesnโt reflect that. I wished I had picked another location for a better experience.

First visited pre Covid and loved this restaurant. So pleased to see everything is as good in 2023 as back in 2017. The chicken curry was mouthwatering as was the spicy fish and the refreshingly light yet tasty salads. Loved the welcoming service and colonial style gracious building.

A very unique and flavourful meal. First, the cuisine is based on a Singapore fusion culture and the only Michelin starred restaurant serving that food. The restaurant is located in a small development along with many other very interesting looking restaurants. We ate outside and it was quite pleasant, although warm out it was comfortable. Unlike some place where you are forgotten when dining outside, the service here was incredibly attentive and professional. We ordered the tasting menu, which was about 15 small plates. Rather than coming one at a time, you would be served all the starters, then all the mains and finally all the desserts. Each plate was quite manageable, some were just a bite, but overall it was a lot of food, nobody would love hungry. Most important, though, were all the interesting and unique flavours. All of the dishes were quite complex and none were disappointing. I particularly liked the seafood dishes, a white curry with crab was the most memorable. Also a nice wine list, I particularly enjoyed the Lebanese red. Definitely a great experience.

Yum. Our first meal while visiting friends in Singapore turned out to be the most memorable. We were really well looked after. The restaurant was atmospheric, especially coming in from torrential rain. The selection of foods was almost too much, in that each dish had enough flavour for a whole meal. I mean that as a huge positive. If I have to pick out one, and my memory has done it for me, it was the calamari in black ink that oozed barbeque and lemon grass flavour and richness. Really special. What a treat.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best Peranakan cuisine in Singapore
I had a gathering at this place and it was phenomenal experience overall. The service was very good as the waitresses were attentive and kept checking if we were ok with the food. The ambience was beautiful and cozy. Restaurant was spacious and we didnโt feel very cluttered even though the restaurant was full. The food was excellent , everything was delicious from the chicken keluak, rendang, sambal petai with prawn, the meatball soup, crab curry. We finished the dinner with the special chendol, loved the coconut milk pudding inside the chendol. The kueh platter was also very delicate and tasty. Last but not least, we had a pot of butterfly pea tea which was soothing and wrapped up our nice evening perfectly.
Be the first to ReplyโLemongrassโ in the curry
Went to Candlenut for dinner with a large group of colleagues from across Asia-Pac. We had a set menu. The food was overall very delicious. however, I pulled a long black strand of something inedible from my curry. I took it to be human hair because it was black, about 15cm long, was thin like a strand of hair, and was pliable like a strand of hair when I placed it on the small individual menu next to my plate. I have never seen such an ingredient in a curry before, including the curry I make at home or in any restaurant. I couldnโt bring myself to eat the remainder of the curry. When my plate was collected by the wait staff, I pointed out the object and thought nothing of it. I didnโt make a fuss or draw undue attention to the object. But seems the customer was wrong as another waiter brought the object back to me and explained that it was actually a piece of lemongrass. I guess the chef has a particular skill of preparing lemongrass in long thin black strands that look like human hair, are as pliable as human hair, and which are as unpleasant as human hair when found in a curry. Best to check your curry very carefully before eating it at this restaurantโฆ. It may contain long strands of โฆ.lemongrass. Which are inedible. Oh, and the staff think the customers are stupid as well.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful place โ Excellent food
The Michelin stared elegant restaurant on Dempsey Hill serves excellent single dishes or set menus. The staff is very friendly and always attentive. The food is Peranakan, a kind of fusion between Malay and Chinese
Be the first to Replya meal I'll remember for a very long time
the food is amazing at this relaxed vibe kind of place. The food is a lovely elevated mix of Chinese cuisine with local Malay and Indonesian cuisines. The crab curry was simply amazing and the beef rendang was excellent. Well, of course, everything was excellent, some just off the scale great. First time I've eaten in a place with a Michelin star (as far as I know). And the prices are also quite amazing (and I don't mean amazingly cheap).
Be the first to ReplyMainly good food
We shared four dishes and they were largely excellent. A rendang, crab curry, and a further mum's curry. The crab curry in particular was sublime. However we also had a squid dish which whilst tasting nice had very chewy squid (a sin), and also bits of sand (an even greater sin). Not really acceptable even for an average restaurant. Lucky we weren't michelin inspectors! Service was good though and the ambience was nice. We would return.

We had a lovely dinner there. The atmosphere was nice and relax. The service was excellent. The food especially the sateh was excellent. Highly recommend.

We had a really lovely dinner here. The food was delicious. Service was excellent, the waitstaff were really knowledgeable about the food. We especially enjoyed our server explaining the history of Peranakan food. Would highly recommend.

We visited for dinner in June 2022. The staff were brilliant & food was delicious. The MRT does not go to the area so a taxi is a most. We were told that it can be difficult to get a taxi home but the restaurant called us a taxi which arrived within 5 minutes.

Hard to beat this place - set a brisk walk from Orchard Road amid that rare Singapore greenery. All dishes excellent, ambience excellent, portion size also relatively good. The crab curry is one of the best. No-smoking. Service was a little too eager - i received my main course before the appetiser was gone - they could easily have held it for 5mins, dishes whisked away etc. A tad expensive but worth it
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food, great service, nice location. MUST TRY when you're in Singapore!
We ordered the lunch tasting menu and added an ala carte order of their Ngo Hiong (SUPER GOOD!). We had one pescatarian in our party and they gladly adjusted the lunch tasting set to her requirements. (We mentioned this is advance, during booking.) It was our first time to try Peranakan cuisine and we were absolutely delighted by all the flavors. Our server was very nice and knowledgeable, I forgot to take his name, but it sure added to the great experience that we had. Definitely going back and recommending this place to everyone who's visiting Singapore.
Be the first to ReplyA beautiful setting, quiet and romantic, and the food is AMAZING.
My husband and I ate dinner at Candlenut and had a fantastic time. We have eaten all over the world, and this chef's food is definitely world-class. The food was creative, fresh, pretty and delicious. After dinner we had the best chocolate dessert I have ever eaten. Highly highly recommended: You won't get a better meal anywhere.

My wife and I have been there yesterday for the fist time. Food was amazing, no matter which one you choose. Recommend to choose different tastes to get the full bandwith of the cuisines gems.
One more thing which will bring ud definitely back is the corteous service they have. The chef, his brother and the other waiters never let us waiting.
We have tried Durian creme for the first time (yeah, it is challenging for someone from overseaโฆ ๐) and the brother of the chef has seen that and brought us another dessert with the justification the dinner should end with a great final! Top, would give 6 stars if possible.
Delicious dinner (minus the desserts)
On our hunt for the best dining experiences Singapore had to offer, we felt we generally hit the jackpot with Candlenut.
The restaurant was buzzing when we arrived at 8pm. It was the busiest (and most expensive) dinner experience we enjoyed during our time there.
Itโs noted for its Peranakan food (again, a fusion of Malay, Chinese and Indonesian influences). Itโs touted as being the worldโs first Michelin star Peranakan restaurant.
We knocked back a Riesling that was described as being โchiselled with alert livelinessโ which led to some lively banter, and then moved to a great bottle of chardonnay (Louis Jadot Marsannay Blanc, Burgandy, 2017). The latter was particularly enjoyable. Described on the wine list as โfine, open nose reminiscent of bananas, pineapples and lemon. Supple, rich and luscious, the wine has a remarkably long finishโ. It was all of supple, rich and luscious but lasted a remarkably short time.
The photographs of the entrees and mains speak for themselves- and the empty dishes too.
But there was a side to the evening that is worth mentioning as well.
It was decided by several in our party of four that we would cap out the evening with some desserts. The epitome of post-purchase dissidence came in the form of the durian cake and the strange chocolate candlenut dessert.
There is a very sound reason why durian is banned in most places. The taste in the mouth is hard to remove- just like garlic seeps into the skin- the smell and the memory stayed with me for days. And it was not pleasant.
The other desert- a chocolate one- could be described as many things. My mouth recoiled on tasting this. The waitress sold this to us as saying that the chef was very proud to be the first person in the world to feature candlenut in a desert. Well, now I can tell you why that is, Sherlock. These two dishes almost ruined what would have been a near perfect meal.
Sweets aside, the savoury dining experience was one of the best that we enjoyed.
Oh Candlenut, lose the desserts and keep your Michelin star!
Excellent Food, Excellent Services, Excellent Location
You arrive in this location outside the Singapore crowd and immediately enter a new dimension. Peranakan food here is really great, we took a set menu, with the superb presentation from our waiter Felix: some excellent starters (Wagyu Beef Karubi Satay), a great soup, some nice mains, and to close excellent desserts. You cannot go to Singapore without tasting Peranakan, you cannot taste Peranakan without going to Candlenut.
