Fantastic Food & Service
The Rhubarb Desert which I love was fantastic as was the Pigeon. My wife's veggie choices also fantastic.

Can't recommend highly enough. Outstanding food. Menus with imagination and attention to detail. Service very friendly, helpful but also not intrusive. Well worth a visit. We have been 5 or 6 times now and each time a gem
Be the first to ReplyNever again…
What a disappointment! Over salted and over fussy food… not sure what is the ‘inspiration’ but it is confused. One of the least balanced culinary experiences. Cutlery ill-matched to the food.. The biscuit of the dessert needed a hatchet rather than the petite chopstick-like handled cutlery. It used to be classy French… now Italianate mish-mash. There are better local alternatives with less pretension. Sorry…

As another year passes by the standards at Caractere just seem to be getting higher and higher. The food , wine and service is quite simply exceptional. In the kitchen you have chefs Diego and Gaetano producing dishes of the highest quality. Sommelier Marco is very enthusiastic about his wine list and so he should be. It’s full of organic and biodynamic wines that are amazing. Then there’s the front of house led by manager Mattia who make you feel so welcome and who’s service is impeccable. Now let’s tell you about our latest visit. This started with the usual friendly welcome before being seated at our table. We ordered a cocktail while we looked at the menu. There is now more choices on the menu with the tasting menu , a la carte and the inclusion of a lunch menu. We decided to go for our usual choice of the tasting menu. While enjoying our cocktails we were presented with a delightful selection of snacks including Fried Pasta , Wasabi Royale and Pollock. Now it was time to discuss wine with sommelier Marco which resulted in an excellent Alois Lageder Mus - XX a light , fruity and elegant sparkling wine. CURIOUS - This is the first category of six that make up the tasting menu. The two dishes that started our lunch were absolutely stunning. The Red Sicilian Prawn Tartare with daikon , mandarin ponzu and a prawn cracker brought utter delight to my wife’s face. I was also in heaven as I enjoyed an amazing Stuffed Pappardelle with sheep ricotta , smoked eel , cime de rapa and puntarelle. The next section was SUBTLE. Here we both opted to choose the Acquerello Risotto with brown butter , smoked lardo , black lime and lemon. This dish was delicious and we both agreed that it was easily one of the best versions they’ve done. (sorry about the pic). DELICATE - This is the fish section that would also be the place of one of my favourite octopus dishes. Firstly my wife had the Steamed Cornish Cod stuffed with scallop and truffle , salsify and a vin jaune. Now on to my Barbecued Galician Octopus with calcot onion , olives , caper leaves and a red wine jus. Now we moved on to the main course called ROBUST. Here we were treated to two more exceptional dishes. The Roast Squab Pigeon with fried artichoke and rosé harissa as well as the Stuffed Saddle of Lamb with spinach , trompette mushrooms and smoked potato left us both not wanting the dishes to end. These were matched perfectly by two excellent recommendations from Marco. For the pigeon he chose a Avignonesi 2020 DA . DI. and for the lamb a fabulous 2017 Inama Carminium. Next to come was the additional STRONG which is the cheese course a selection of artisan cheeses with crackers , apple and prune chutney. Now it was time to finish with GREEDY. This s the dessert section. First was the refreshing pre dessert of Blood Orange with pistachio. This was followed by two absolutely delights. The Forced Yorkshire Rhubarb with caramelised puff pastry , creme anglaise and yoghurt sorbet was light and delicious. The revamped Chocolate and Pecan Tartelette with gavottes and a whiskey jelly was chocolate heaven. This was paired beautifully with a Moussamoussettes Pet Nat. We finished with coffee and petit fours to bring to an end another fabulous dining experience at Caractere. With every visit this restaurant goes from strength to strength and is an absolute credit to the hospitality industry. I would definitely recommend a visit and I’m looking forward to returning very soon myself. Thank You Diego , Emily , Marco , Gaetano , Mattia and all the team for a fantastic lunch and look forward to seeing you all again soon.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday treat….wow!!!
Hopefully the hard work of Emily and Diego will be rewarded with a well deserved M* in the coming months. The service is impeccable, Marco the sommelier is a wealth of knowledge and talked with great passion and detail about the wine and food pairings. The food….o wow the food…..each dish is a work or art which is put together with great skill and precision. The taste of the cod, prawn, celeriac, octopus and forced rhubarb were all incredible. The ambiance is laid back and the tables nicely spaced, the restaurant has a great ambiance and the staff are warm and friendly, I’d suggest you go before the star arrives and you can’t get a table for love nor money! My wife enjoyed her birthday experience….thanks to the team, we will return!
Be the first to ReplyAlways lovely - always special - and .. those sauces!
Wonderful inventive food from Emily and Diego in Notting Hill - don’t miss out because it’s a little out of the Centre it’s well worth the detour.

Little gem just off the Portobello Rd. Very casual and relaxed ambience. Food was amazing. All of it was just incredibly tasty. Spot on wine choosen by their sommelier. We had very lovely evening as service was attentive and professional. Can't wait to come back for more. Thank you

We dined here as a group of 20 for a special event with guests that included many great Chefs from various countries around the world. The one comment from all was "when will Michelin recognise this level of cooking & service ?" Quite simply fantastically high level of skill in the kitchen & perfect service from front of House. Emily & Diego are on top form here
Be the first to ReplyMore pricey than the trip advisor menu
We had expected 3 courses to be less than the £85 on the day. The crab starter was sublime. The mains took a while to arrive - 45mins and was a slight disappointment. Good food but not worth the value.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing dishes and service.
A perfect evening. The food is unreal and service faultless. The portions are so generous and the fact you get a choice on the taster menu/ and can even share is a great little benefit! Well done to the team at at Caractere
Be the first to ReplySorry but I really don’t get it!
Sorry but I really don’t get it. Lunch today. Been to this restaurant several times. Let me be honest, always had in the past a good meal here but not a great meal. Albeit last visit some time a year ago, I noted that something had started to change in the kitchen. Fast forward to today and I really don’t get it. Took the 5 courses menu. The meal started with two aperitifs, nice and friendly, nothing special though and then. And then, a seriously great meal, refined, intelligent with nice visuals. Temperatures were good. The quality of the cuissons, of the ingredients etc.. Nothing to fault. How this team in the kitchen is now serving this -so-much-higher level of cuisine? I asked if there had been any changes in the team? Answer? No! Honestly, I do not get it. The two desserts tasted that day and the pre-dessert, albeit good, could get a lift, but the rest of the meal was truly superb. I mean it in a way that is somehow higher than what they are aiming at. The service is very friendly and polite. A few negatives: cutlery? Orthopaedic cutlery. Plates? Pretty but I had some dishes served in the same type of plate during the meal. No big deal but… Restaurant lighting? Table cloth? Clearly not a restaurant for the evening IMO, my eyes sight not great but I know some restaurants still do not realise how important table lighting is. Great glasses for wines by the way. Good wine list. Location? If this team in the kitchen -who will change in a major way in the fall, a key risk there/I hope not?- keeps on delivering this level of cuisine, it would be sad to not be more centrally located. I am sure some leases are expiring in central London… In conclusion, a seriously great meal, first time I have seen this level of cuisine here. Few clients today. Can they deliver this quality in the spring, in the fall, during week days, at weekends, lunch time, dinner times? Many clients, few clients, I don’t know. The floor will also get some new recruits in Sept and October, hopefully the chemistry will be there. As I say to some of my friends: today, two covers, lunch time etc….. Please, please, keep that level of cuisine. Keen to come back for the next menu. At lunch time…

The food in this restaurant is well worth two Michelin stars. I’ve never had such a lovely dish of beef. All courses were very creative and of fantastic finesse. The service is very welcoming and attentive. The wines are rather expensive. We will definitely come back. Caractere is a brilliant success.

Fabulous food in a fresh setting with fantastic service. On its way to the first Michelin star, no doubt about it.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Food & Service
The food is the quality and value in London and how the Michelin Guide doesn't give them a star is beyond belief! The beef i had this time was the some of the best i have ever had. The the pasta with truffle is an stand out dish! Diageo's pasta is some of the best in London if not the best. The staff are also great as well.
Be the first to ReplyCelebration rather than light meal.
An extravaganza with visiting friends who appreciate good food. The tasting menu did not disappoint and service was strong. Rarely does the whole table comment on a butter knife but the team must get that question fairly often as the source was known. In terms of menu, Classic French style cooking with an Italian twist ( especially on the wines. ). Lobster course was the crowning glory but each course challenged and satisfied. If there was a weakness it was the petit fours where one was significantly stronger then the other two bland offerings. But at that stage of the evening who cares. Anyone who is not satiated after the menu is a stronger eater than I , especially if you cave to the cheese board which was a platter of beauty. Prices are not cheap but fair given location and quality. Definitely a celebration or treat rather than a local and I already look forward to returning next time a reason can be found.
Be the first to ReplyThe best duck I've ever had
The food was delicious, but the duck in particular was outstanding. It was tender beyond possibility, and so flavorful. I've never had a more perfectly cooked duck, and frankly, I think about it at least once a week. I'm coming to the area again in early August and my reservation is already made. I can't wait to eat this dish again.
Be the first to ReplySimply excellent!
We had a terrific evening in the Caractère. Of course, we selected the 5-course tasting menu and started with cornish crab, white asparagus, pistachio, dill oil and caviar. Wow - what a start! Excellent product quality, sublime aromas and a beautiful presentation! Next course was the garlic and chilli oil ravioli with big chunks of native blue lobster, English peas and an excellent bisque. This was a perfect balance between the chilli oil and the slightly sweet peas plus an intense, deep bisque. Chapeau! The wild turbot in the next course was excellent as well, the slightly bitter seaweed leafs were actually not adding anything positive to the dish. Both main courses, the Roast Lake District Shorthorn Beef and the Dry Aged Duck were excellent, great product quality and fine preparation. The desserts were not quite up to this high standard. The Rum Baba with Vanilla Chantilly was exactly that, well made, but without any gourmet twist. Talking about prices: The 5-course menu is, especially given the really high quality, very cheap - 98 Pounds (plus 11 supplement for the lobster). And unlimited filtered water (still or sparkling) comes for just 1,50 per Person. The wine list is extensive and well selected. But when I ask, if the 90 Pound White Burgundy that I selected would be a good choice, I am not really happy when the Sommelier proposes only wines in the 150+ Pound category. Oh, and at the end, we got a fine example of optimizing the contribution margin: The Rum-shot I had (and it just a normal sized one) with the Baba was charged with 30 Pounds (plus the usual 13% service charge) - for a Rum that retails for under 40 pound per bottle! That is ridiculous, especially compared to the 98 Pounds for a fine 5-course-menu! But anyway - the evening was excellent and overall worth the money! We wish the team all the best for a definitely starry future ;-)

The Food is the best value & quality in London. They also make an effort for Vegetarians and adapt dishes for my wife fantastic!
Be the first to ReplyExceptional food but a touch too expensive!
The food was exceptional and we enjoyed the different style of menu with interesting choices. Great selection of wine with good service.
I would say that it is expensive though and whilst we did visit on a Tuesday - it was only half full which slightly impacted the atmosphere.
Delicious
I would highly recommend the lunch deal with wine at this restaurant. My mother and I enjoyed every mouthful of food and it was a great way to enjoy a relaxed meal before going to the theatre later. We also enjoyed the walk along Portobello Road before going to the restaurant. We found the service to be friendly, efficient and informative. I can't pick a favourite dish, they were all great.
Be the first to ReplyLast year was another level unfortunately
We ate in caractere on friday night, we were guest of friend regolar of this place, the restaurant was full and there were some good vibes, this is our second visit for us to caractere, the first was in june of last year. we noticed that the menu offers have gone down, smaller menu, however the prices have grown exponentially.
Starters are fantastic, apart from the cacio e pepe a little too strong in flavor, the main courses were very salted, especially the octopus, the lamb was good, but the lean part was almost zero compared to the fat part.
the desserts selection was poor and repetitive , with the same dessert more than a year ago, both made with chocolate, if you don't like chocolate there is no suitable replacement, there are cheeses, but with a high price supplement.
The service on Friday night was confusing, the team was in evident difficulty, the dishes were explained with little sentiment and in a hurry, our last time the service was on another level, Michelin star level, that on a Friday night was very far from that , apart from the sommelier, the wine pairing for the tasting menu was incredible, his communication skills even better than the wines, it was the first time that someone explained to us with what criteria a pairing was made, notions that I will use for dinners with my friends. We will give Caractere another chance, hoping to find a better service!
The Restaurant gets better with age like a fine wine
The food was fantastic my wife's risotto was the best she has ever had including ones in Italy! The lamb was fantastic and serves some of the best pasta in London. Staff are fantastic and the whole ambiance is also fantastic. This restaurant is a must visit!

We have eaten at Caractere a number of times now. The welcome, the food and the service has been exceptional every time. The tasting menu is fabulous
We would highly recommend the whole experience.
Excellent food and well priced but they did not remember my allergy and kept forgetting to serve our wine
We really like this restaurant. The food is fabulous and the ambiance is great. We visited again last night. It was busy and that was great to see. The staff were friendly and all got off to a great start. However, we ordered white wine which was then placed in an ice bucket away from our table, it was never brought back to us. We got up and got it ourselves a couple of times, asked the waiter who then forgot and asked again. It was served by a waiter right at the end. Far more worryingly, we were asked about allergies at the start of the meal. I said I had a cheese allergy, yet my dessert was served with a mascarpone ice cream. It was only because I had checked the menu when I ordered that I spotted it. I had assumed they would have swopped it, but they did not until I mentioned it. This was very poor service and potentially dangerous. Not great.

Enjoyed every minute off it. Food was delicious and service was great. Very reasonable lunchtime deal for 3 courses and a bottle of wine for £50 per head, so great value. Can’t wait to come back next time I’m visiting London.
