Modern sharing pates
Interesting concept with chefs taking a residency for a period of c. 1 month before rotating out. The menu offers a variety of sharing plates with the cuisine depending on the chef on rotation at the time of your visit. We shared the bread and cultured butter (delicious), tempura pumpkin, ox cheek brochette, and a salad along with a glass of white each. Food was expensive and servings were small. Service was ok. Setting and atmosphere was great.
Be the first to ReplyThis is an absolutelly must-visit!!!!!
This was completely unexpected, but turned out to be one of the best meals I have ever had. And Iāve been to NOMA and serveral other 3 star restaurants. 1. Go there 2. order bread and butter (or anything else on the menu) 3. Be happy. Very very happyš
Be the first to ReplyAbysmal fail. Avoid
On the surface, carousel ticks all the boxes. When you scratch below the surface however, there is sadly limited substance - which as it transpires is an expensive and frustrating lesson in equal measure.
In summary, whilst carousel is technically a natural wine bar and restaurant itās list is average, with several wines out of stock and staff having not the faintest clue on what theyāre serving.
Food is served via small (read tiny) plates (FFS do we need waiters telling us in 2022 that food comes out when itās ready and is designed to share?!) and thereās really no difference in size between small and large dishes although prices are 2x. Quality is sadly not. The bavette was inedible yet our server did not think to ask if it was satisfactory when clearly not eaten.
Overall, the experience was half as good for a bill that was twice as much as it shouldāve been. In summary if you care more about the culinary experience than the Faf of sitting in a trendy space, do not bother with Carousel. An overwhelming fail.
Oh and PS kitchen closes at 9.30 which they conveniently fail to communicate when you order a bottle of wine at 9.15 (which was served warm but I wonāt even go there).
Avoid.
Disappointing
We were really looking forward to trying the ānewā Carousel after having only previously attended guest chef collaborations (these are great). We chose the wine bar and opted for bar snacks. Firstly on the food, the quality and taste didnāt adhere to the price tag and we were left really disappointed. We ordered bread, deep fried artichoke, crispy chicken, steak and broccoli. The portion sizes left a lot to be desired. Secondly, the service. The staff were all lovely and smiley but felt they lacked experience (not their fault!). Attention to detail like changing the wine glass when you change grape is of course crucial and sadly we didnāt even get a chance to say anything before the wine was poured. There was also an awkward mix up with the wine order - we went with one option but were charged 53% more for a different wine. The manager took 20% off the wine but this was still disappointing as weād bought 2 bottles and were left feeling as though it was our fault. A shame but sadly, that will be the last time going back.
Be the first to ReplyThe wine bar is insanely good
Just a review of the wine bar.
Cool space, high tables, trendy but not annoyingly so. Service super friendly. And the food. My word itās good. Literally everything we had was delicious but the chicken in honey, the tomato with croutons and the three way potato were genuinely divine. Could have eaten plates and plates of them. Great wine selection too.
Brilliant place.
Very disappointing experience
The food was ok but the portions were very small and for the price we paid it was disappointing to leave feeling hungry. The wine was absolutely terrible. When we tried the wine and didn't like it, they said they still had to charge us. I found the waitress uninterested in our experience and feedback. Avoid.
Be the first to ReplyDont bother! Extremly disappointing
Food was average at best, wine was awful with an aftertaste of vingar, believe it was corked, or old wine that had been poured into the carafe, we were not even shown the bottle. Service was appalling. Had starters and wine, our bill was approx Ā£80.00 for two people, we did not spend more than 35/40 minutes in the restaurant, couldnt wait to get out of there.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic experience & execution, from chef of the night, āDimitrios moudiosā
Iād wanted to come to this restaurant for a long time, now moved to Charlotte Street in the fantastic new location, with great decor, spread over two floorsā¦. My friend had been to the Marleybone branch six times before and said it was well worth while as different pop-up chefs cater for guestsā¦. Me being an x - chef, I thought it was a fantastic ideaā¦
We had pre-drinks/ cocktails as we had to be in the restaurant by 7 pm ready for the 15 course tasting menuā¦ although a little concerned sitting on bar stalls on one side of the restaurant that soon faded away as we had a perfect view of the open kitchen so in theory one of the better seatsā¦ Dimitrios gave a little speech at the beginning of the meal which was Japanese Fusion style menuā¦
The service was excellent and our waitress Lydia ( superb ), as was the lady that was doing the wines very experiencedā¦.
Overall it was a fantastic evening and although not a vegetarian, the vegetarian options on the tasting menu were in some ways better than the meat and fish coursesā¦. which blew both me and my friend awayā¦.
For example the shiitake mushroom chawanmushi or the potato, chestnut & egg yolk courseā¦ Also the mackerel, oyster & koji brothā¦
I will definitely be returning and the idea of a different cuisine is exciting..
Thx team esp Dimitrios& Lydia
Disappointing
As much as I like the concept, the execution in the new venue in Charlotte St is just mediocre. Went there and spent Ā£200 for a very average experience with a sloppy service. The wine is hopelessly overprices for what it is and difficult to find anything decent even for Ā£50+ (particularly bad is the unfiltered Veltliner which tastes like apple juice). The food from a Mexican chef was also anything but exciting. Such a shame to see them going down the path of so many other London restaurants of charging a lot for very low quality..
Be the first to ReplyA Unique and Incredibly Experience
We originally booked to come and try Carousel a year earlier, then had to cancel last minute. The team were fantastic, though, and happily rescheduled us for Valentineās Day this year!
Long story short, we should never have cancelled the first time around ā the evening was incredible from beginning to end, with some of the best service Iāve had in London from what felt like a family team. Food from the guest chef shone ā the starter was to die for ā and it was beautifully complimented by the gorgeous cocktails from the bar.
The experience at Carousel is so different to anything else: long tables, rotating guest chefs, and always served by lovely staff. Truly unique! Honestly, canāt recommend a night here enough, and the joy of it is that you can come back time and time again and always try something new! We canāt wait to come back once lockdown lifts (and have even been impressed with their emails during lockdown keeping up with their customers!)
Really fun and novel experience
What a great experience, I was recommended this restaurant many years ago, why did it take me so long to take the plunge? The restaurant has a different chef every week, so every visit is a new event. You sit on long tables, everyone is served the same food at the same time, it is a really fun atmosphere. We liked the look of the Korean menu and we were not disappointed, fabulous food which we thoroughly enjoyed. The staff are very helpful and friendly. Not an ideal location for a romantic dinner for two but a really invigorating experience, the place is buzzing.
Be the first to ReplyGreat concept, perfect execution
Looking at reviews of Carousel is almost a futile exercise because the chefs rotate constantly. The review of food on one day will not be helpful for deciding whether to go to Carousel a month later as there will be a whole other chef and menu.
Well, I'm going to review it anyway because I'm going to be coming back again and again and again.
Last night I went to Carousel for the first time and it was one of my best dining experiences in years.
Food: Chef Flynn McGarry was there this time and he truly has a gift. Everything we had was chock full of flavour and inventive. Just to highlight, we had 6 courses, he used fruits in all 5 savoury ones, but not in the dessert menu. I think it showcases talent and creativity if you can make a berry ceviche starter (I was apprehensive upon seeing the menu), and make it taste so full of umami, you almost forget you are eating something that is traditionally sweet. The least exciting course was the dessert but that's not because it wasn't good, only because the other courses were so perfectly executed.
Service: Impeccable. Not pushy, friendly, we were never waiting for long in between courses. Done with a smile and real care to make sure they knew whether we were enjoying our food.
Venue: Pretty industrial and I am mentioning this because I think it is not for everyone - there are 2 long tables that you share with other diners (maybe 40-50 per table?) - it did not bother us but if you are sensitive to that kind of thing it might dampen the experience.
Drinks: I ordered the sour on the menu and it was perfect. My friend ordered a glass of house white and it was served from an existing open bottle (a bit informal) she did not have a problem with this but again, for someone more inclined to something more formal it might be a negative.
We'll be going again and again!!!
