Won't be the last. Very pretty and quiet atmosphere though lighting a bit too subdued. Awesome friendly attentive service and such a great menu. One of the best racks of lamb I have ever had. Lots of interesting dishes. Superb Peking Duck though the "tortillas" or rice wraps are a bit chewy. Expensive but worth it.

Well I kinda liked the food, but I didn't really love all the food though... I suggest it as a four star because when I wanted a dumpling soup WITHOUT green onions. But they really put green onions on it and I actually don't want onions. Also, I want some water. While I was eating, my daughter wanted to drink some water. But after some food got served the water didn't come yet though. This is why I think this restaurant is a four star.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I were so excited to go to the restaurant on
My husband and I were so excited to go to the restaurant on Valentines Day to experience the duck, instead we got a tongue lashing from the hostess up front when we arrived. She stated we had not confirmed our order and reservations. We showed her via our phone that we had. The phone doesn't lie and she kept on accusing us of not confirming the duck, so they did NOT have it ready for us. This went on for about 10 mins back and forth instead of saying no problem we will work this out she continued to scold us. I was ready to leave but unfortunately it was Valentines Day and we had no other reservations. We were escorted to our seats. The experience we had there was less than favorable, it's a pretty expensive resturan to have this kind of experience. Please beware of how rude the front hostesses are. I would not recommend this restauran. It is pricey with an attitude totally unacceptable. There are OTHER GREAT RESTAURANTS to choose from

***** for Ambience ** food ** service * value We were pretty excited to come here. The idea of an upscale Chinese restaurant was exciting. And walking in was really encouraging. The restaurant decor was upscale, not your typical Chinese restaurant. The restaurant was busy too. All indications looked good. We rsvp'd the duck as recommended. But it was all downhill from there. Food was... just not good at all. We ordered several dishes and maybe 1 was decent. A lot of it went untouched because it just wasn't good. We were actually wishing we had gone to capital seafood or Panda Express during the meal. The prices were insanse. A pot of tea, min $24. Soda, $5. Bowl of soup min $20. We were willing to try though because we were so excited when we walked in. I'll pay $$$$ if the food is worth it. The service was not what you'd expect for a restaurant where entrees cost on average of $60+. We skipped our favorite part of the meal, dessert because the entire meal was so bad we didn't have any confidence in the dessert menu. The duck presentation was just that, a presentation. I've had better duck at every other Chinese restaurant in socal. Dinner for 8 with tip (2 adult drinks) came out to $1000. I looked around our table and half their plates or more were untouched. Won't come back here again.
Be the first to ReplyFood was exquisite.
Beautiful restaurant and service was excellent. The duck was delicious, moist and lean. It is definitely worth ordering. The lychee shrimp was unique and delicious. Everyone in our group enjoyed their meal.
Be the first to ReplyMade reservations to surprise my wife for her birthday.
Took her and her parents that were visiting from Taiwan. We were sat even before our reservation time which was great but that is where the positive vibe ends. We sat at our table waiting for service but that was a while though I didn't time it. We ordered Peking duck and they cut it and placed it on the table with no explanation on how to eat it. My wife had had it before so she explained it to the whole table. We ran out of the side veggies and rice paper for the duck. When we asked for some more the told us they charge for that. I said it was fine e but they only brought not even half the sides that I asked for but still charged us. We ordered other dishes that came with rice and the rice came out before the other dishes. We ask them to take back the rice and to bring it out when the other dishes were ready. When we received the other dishes we didn't get any rice. I would have asked but there was no one around to help our table. When the server came around we asked him to cancel the rice because we were almost done. Besides the bad service the food itself was not worth the money spent. The total for the entire meal was over $300 and the experience was so bad that I still owed my wife a birthday meal.
Be the first to ReplySaturday dinner at 7 pm - Roasted duck, matsutake duck
Saturday dinner at 7 pm - Roasted duck, matsutake duck wonton soup, crispy beef tongue, spicy stir-field wild mushroom morels with Shanghai's bok-choy, chang'an gourd chicken, shanxi special sour chili biang biang noodles, peppercorn and tangerine peel ice cream, peach green tea Service: super attentive and excellent customer service Ambiance: modern luxury decor, love all the settings except the table was way too small, and the male restroom needs to improve the hygiene especially area around the urinals. Price: pricy Food quality: the duck was excellent, so in loved the duck meat with smoke infuse. The crispy beef tongue and the mushroom morels veggie dishes were phenomenal. In addition, the steam rice, and the ice cream brought me a next level of surprises in Chinese food. Dislike: I will skip the gourd chicken, the wonton soup and the biang biang noodles. The seasoning of the chicken and the noodles may not strong enough to satisfy my taste buds, and the soup was serving in lukewarm, that's extremely unacceptable. Due to the price point, I have a high expectations for this adventure in terms of food quality, service, ambiance and all the minor details. Except some minor issues, it's still a great dining experience. Will come back for other dishes.
Be the first to ReplyIt feels like you are stepping into another world.
The ambiance is amazing. We absolutely loved that the servers explain the dishes and how best to experience everything. If you are looking for a unique dinner - this is a must try!
Be the first to ReplyInterior is beautiful, food is not great.
Servers here don't know what they're doing. Overall, not a good experience. Leaving disappointed. More details to the bad service : I asked a server to refill my ice water, the sever came back with steaming hot water. Asked another server to replace the water, the sever came back with luke warm water. I had to ask the THIRD time to get iced water refilled. The whole thing takes over 10 minutes, I was waiting thirsty. In an upscale restaurant like this, I would expect an easier time getting basic request fullfilled like getting iced water. Ordered an appetizer, it never came. In the end, server told us it's sold out. Could have let us know a lot sooner. Added a meat dish just to find out in the end it was never added either. What a joke.
Be the first to ReplyThis is the most tastefully and opulently decorated Chinese
This is the most tastefully and opulently decorated Chinese restaurant in the new continent. From the courtyard, to the entry, to the main hall and bar area, and finally the private banquet rooms, all are beautifully made with many details from the rich history of Chinese culture, especially those of Qin and Tang dynasties. We were invited to dinner at Chang'an by local hosts who organized a book show for my wife's recently published book on fine dining. Though we never heard of it before, we were immediately attracted by Chang'an's distinctive style and flare upon arrival. The dinner was served in one of the cozy private banquet rooms, whose walls are built with original brick's and other ornate materials sourced from China. The ambience and service were welcoming and impeccable. The dishes encompassed various styles from different regional Chinese cuisines, from Yangtze River delta to Sichuan to the northwest region where the ancient city Chang'an locates. One of the highlights of the night was the Peking duck that was carved artfully by a chef table side. Each of the courses was presented neatly and served well timed. The flavors are of traditional with minor adaptations to contemporary trend. All in all Chang'an is a must-visit restaurant for anyone who loves fine dining or authentic Chinese culture and cuisine.

"You can take the rat out of Hong Kong, but you can't take the Hong Kong out of the rat"If you've got some disposable income, and want to see a really nicely decorated restaurant, some cool electronic name tags, and a burning duck show, then Chang'an is the place to be.Otherwise, there's an abundance of service and attention given to your table, but at times it is awkward and there are some missteps. For example, taking away the drink menu before I've decided to order, leaving finished dishes on the table, and not re-folding napkins when we rise to go to the bathroom (yes, you better believe this is standard expectation at these prices). There were a few items that looked really good, but after $118 on the Duck, I just couldn't do $38 on crispy beef tongue, or Mapo Tofu $32, or ghost pepper fried rice $48. We regretted ordering the Sea Bass with chili in stone pot for $78... it was good - an amazing array of mainly sweet and sour flavors, but the volume of fish was low to justify that charge. The burning duck - Must order in advance! A dedicated chef appears from the kitchen to pour rice wine over then light the fuse for a three second spectacle. It looks cool, and then the chef guy meticulously carves small slices on two plates. We wrap the duck into small rice paper tortillas, scoop on oyster sauce, add leeks, small slivers of celery and pear and voila! a very delicious mini duck roll. I ended up eating four of these. On the second duck plate, they cover it with a cylindrical glass cover, then influse in smoke for an edgier, less gamey flavor. Interesting.Hot Tip: The server asked us whether we would like the duck carcass to be used for bone broth won ton soup, or for something else on rice. An option to not have either wasn't really articulated so we presumed that this was part of the duck show. Upon receiving the bill we realized that a polite nod costed us another $26.Truffle Crystal Prawns with hand made noodlesA low flavor dish with noodles that are more sticky and limp than you would expect for a hand-made dish. Truffle is a little imperceptible and overal taste sensations have to search hard for anything strong.Chang Braised Beef thin noodle soupThe noodles are thin, but medium wide and beef is tender and falls apart easily. I liked this dish but was getting bloated at the same time. Sauteed Celery with Dried Shredded TofuNothing too special by palate or presentation. I've definitely tasted deeper flavors for this combo. Durian special Like a white mousse, topped with exactly three raspberries. Durians not for me, but the flavor is quite subtle so if you're ever going to try this stinky fruit, this may be your best chance. I'm very certain not ever coming back here, well, if someone else foots the bill then okay, ummm....That's all...
Be the first to ReplyThe ambiance is amazing.
The food was not good. I ordered a shrimp dish with asparagus and snow peas and there was zero asparagus in the dish. The food tasted like it was boiled and dumped on a plate. Zero seasoning. The pricing is off the charts clearly they're trying to compensate for the high rent and the cost of the renovation. won't go back.
Be the first to ReplyCame for my husband's 73 year old birthday.
Wanted something special and we surely got it with the star of the night: roast duck. The service and attention we received was excellent. For the birthday boy, the restaurant presented him with a bowl of long life noodle soup. That was a nice touch. We ordered dishes that went well with the roast duck.Old Shanghai smoked fish, black fungus onion salad in vinegar, individual wonton soup, stir fried shrimp with snow peas and cashews, sautéed pea tips with garlic and stir fried truffle shrimp with noodles. The ambiance was elegant, clean, spacious and romantic. Perfect for couples and special occasions.
Be the first to ReplyI recently visited Chang'an and was struck by the beautiful
I recently visited Chang'an and was struck by the beautiful Chinese-themed decor of the restaurant. The highlight of my experience was watching the roast duck being carved right in front of me, which was really cool.I also ordered a variety of dishes, including the eggplant, charcoal-coated tofu, fried rice, smoked duck, and soup. While the food was decent, I have to say that the service could have been better. I felt like the staff was rushing us to eat faster, which made me feel a bit uncomfortable.Ultimately, while the ambiance and presentation of the food were impressive, I don't believe that the overall experience justified the high price tag.
Be the first to ReplyIf you have the bank roll to spend $75-100 person on
If you have the bank roll to spend $75-100 person on Chinese food, then this place is a nice spot for Chinese food. For everyone else, this is a special occasion type restaurant. Decor is probably the nicest Chinese restaurant I've been to. Dim lighting accented by textures and traditional Asian wood panelings, but mixed with a modern layouts throughout. Tables are far apart enough from each other for private conversations in a very upscale atmosphere. Most protein dishes were close to $100, with bare minimal vegetable dishes running around $40. The duck is the star of the show and can be served in a variety of ways after they carve the skin and meat table side for their show.I dont have the bankroll to eat here on a regular meal, so to me, this is very overpriced and only deserving of 3 stars. It's like paying $20 for a street taco. A good taco? Yes, but.. not great, and def no taco is worth $20. HOWEVER, if you can afford that, then this place can be 5 stars for you. The private upscale atmosphere is really hard to come by for a Chinese restaurant. In fact, the next most expensive Chinese restaurant in Irvine, has a similar decor, but you have really bright led lighting, mixed with a really noisy atmosphere because the table next to you is within arms reach. So, for some, this restaurant can be a gem!
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful ambiance and interior decor.
Love all the Asian-influenced details, and themed pillows. We ordered their signature whole roasted duck that was carved table side and presented with such showmanship! The highlight for me was their roasted beef short ribs. No words can describe how melt-in-your mouth amazing this was. They even cut it up nicely for you. Amazing dining experience!!!

How this gem doesn't have 5 stars is beyond me?! First off, you have to enjoy Chinese food and have the open minded taste buds for it. This is nowhere nearing being your local fast food stop. The attention to details is absolutely spectacular here - from the decor, to the dishes' flavors and presentations , to even the electronic name tags on the servers. You can tell the owners went all in here especially when this building used to be a very nice steakhouse. Chang An has turned this hidden spot in Old Town Tustin into ... honestly.. my new favorite Chinese food restaurant in Orange County.Order their flaming peking duck ! Its worth the tag. They light it up in flames before you then serve it cooked in multiple ways/stylez. You get delicious wraps , duck skin crisped to perfection, and then they even smoke a good amount of the duck for a totally different kick. Their short ribs were also cooked to perfection- moist centers with mouthwatering crispy edges. Wow just wow. We got their hot and sour soups, which were good - traditionally flavored. Their wagyu rice is amazingly rich with flavors. The crispy shrimp is an airy crisp with a wasabi like mustard drizzle so if some guests in your dinner party can't handle wasabi, ask for sauce on the side. They even make dumplings with lamb to change things up, and I enjoyed their twist on this. Their vegetable dumplings were good but their craftsmanship on the actual dumplings (turning them into little chickens & purple lotus dumplings) was impressive. Vegetable dumplings are never as mind blowing with flavors as the protein meat filled dumplings so for them to add an extra creative touch to the vegetable dumplings shows that they really catered their menu to have a little something for everyone. Great versatility!Lastly, their desserts are worth saving some room for too. They brought out a complimentary durian cake for my bday which tasted just like the fruit (again an acquired taste for durian is necessary) , and we ordered the blue pear, which is a white chocolate delicacy filled with yummy goodness! I've already made a reservation to come back here with a much bigger group cause I want to show my whole family this spot. Mmmm
Be the first to ReplyFood was overpriced! Environment was nice.
Only the Duck was definitely a must order dish.

Strong points for this place are their Beijing duck and their service. You get the combination of the two when the duck is presented tableside: torched to finish off the preparation of the duck with the first plate served with just the crispy skin of the duck, and subsequent plates served of the meat with the skin on. The accompaniments (celery, cucumber, scallions, hoi sin sauce) and pancakes are served with the duck. Since they have this policy of only 1 duck per table, it is best to have no more than 6 at your table so that each person can get ample duck to enjoy. It is one of the best Beijing ducks you can get in the LA/OC.The other dishes were good but not amazing, with the exception of the noodle dish. That one was quite tasty. The service here was excellent, probably the best I've ever experienced at any Chinese restaurant in all of Southern California. If you ever wanted a fine dining experience from a Chinese restaurant, then this one would be it. Our bill came out to $175.00 per person, which included tax and 25% gratuity. Pricey. For us, it won't be a place to dine at on a regular basis, but for special occasions, definitely.
Be the first to ReplyIn general the food and service are good.
I'll definitely return. For those who tight about money, this is not a place for you!
Be the first to ReplyCame here for a family birthday dinner, very unique
Came here for a family birthday dinner, very unique experience. Got the duck and so much more. There's unique dishes like pigeon and lotus, first time trying these for me. Dessert was fun, one of those where you break the outer shell. Fried chicken was good, cilantro salad was a great flavor combo. We also had a couple lamb dishes which is a meat and flavor I'm not used to having with Chinese food. We also had pork belly sliders and lychee prawns. I liked the pork belly sliders. The lychee prawns had breaded and fried lychee which was my first time eating lychee in that way. It's not my personal favorite Chinese restaurant experience, but it was very unique and fun to try something different.
Be the first to ReplyIf you would like to order the duck/side service duck you
If you would like to order the duck/side service duck you must order a day ahead/make reservations. The duck is $118 and it's a good amount. A whole duck was a decent amount for 11 people at our table to share. I think maybe a whole duck would be good for 8 people of course along with other dishes. The duck comes with pancake wrappers, cucumbers, scallions, and duck sauce. The duck table service put on a show for us! Lighting up the duck on fire in front of us and smoking the duck. So you get roasted duck and smoked duck to eat. I thought it was kind of "interesting" that the table service worker had a tip jar, being in a classy upscale restaurant it felt out of place. I hope some of the tip we give on the bill goes over to him. The duck is definitely a must get when coming here, very tender! We ordered multiple dishes as well, such as the crispy beef tongue, vegetable dumplings, prawns and lychee stir fry, Crispy fried chicken fillets, pan fried American wagyu, and tofu soup.Besides the duck I would recommend crispy beef tongue! Juicy and tender! And the lychee prawns! Only because the fried lychee covered in batter and house sauce was so unique and tasty!I would not recommend the crispy chicken fillets, it is mainly batter, fried chicken skin, very little meat. It is also super spicy and will leave your tongue tingling! I also wouldn't recommended the tofu soup, this one was also super spicy and left your tongue feeling itchy. The prices here are definitely on the high end, but the service, presentation, and dishes are pretty good!

Finally visited this restaurant on the weekend for the roasted duck. The food is average quality but the service was not good. Servers and impolite and inexperienced. Will not go back again for sure.
Be the first to ReplyWhat an amazing experience.
I went with a friend and was pleasantly surprised. This place is authentic and classy from food to decoration. The roasted duck was as good as what you can get from a high end Peking duck restaurant in China. Everything else also tasted good and was elegantly presented. A special word for the architecture and interior decoration: the receptionist told us that the "hanging flower door" facing the entrance and the reception desk are real antiques shipped over here from China. So are the carved-wood window panes lining the walls, and the roof tiles running on the frontside of the bar. Each decorative detail tells its own story ... Yes the place is a little pricey, but within the range of fine dining restaurants around here. And it's so unique!
