😒 3/5 - A bit disappointed this time

On a previous trip to Napa, dinner at Ciccio was one of the highlights of the whole trip, so we were very excited to return this year. Granted, our previous meal was pre-Covid and we had done their chef’s table dinner (which doesn’t currently exist), so maybe our expectations of a meal at Ciccio were a little too high. This time, we came for dinner about a week after they had re-opened for indoor dining, and our meal was just ok. The food was generally all good, but the experience as a whole was a little off.
Prior to our trip, I was so excited when I saw that Ciccio had reopened for indoor dining and I was very happy that I managed to get one of the limited reservations for this tiny restaurant, which were snatched up quickly. I know this restaurant is very popular with locals, so competition for reservations is probably harder than at many of the more touristy restaurants nearby.
When we arrived for dinner, our server came over quickly to take our drink orders. Throughout the meal, she was efficient, but a little unfriendly. However, I could see they were understaffed with only two total servers for all of the indoor and outdoor tables, so it wasn’t a big deal.
To drink, my wife had a glass of one of their Italian red wines, which she said was fine but not memorable, while I wanted to try a negroni off of their special negroni menu. I like negronis and was curious to get more information about the differences between them, but our server didn’t really provide any information when I asked, just saying that she liked a certain one and that was about it. I ended up getting that one, but not really loving it. It was a fine negroni, but just didn’t taste special or memorable in any way.
Food-wise, we split the kale Caesar salad before splitting two pastas and then finishing with the spicy pizza, which we remembered loving last time. Overall, the food was quite good, similar to what we remembered. I really enjoyed the salad and the pizza, although we both agreed that the pastas were good, but not standouts. However, although it’s a casual place, I was kind of shocked at how rushed the meal felt. Even with having three separate courses of food, we were in and out in under an hour. This just seemed too fast given that the meal wasn’t all that cheap and we would have liked to have more time to enjoy one item before the next thing is already coming out.
My other complaint with the experience would be related to the general vibe in the restaurant that night. It was very obvious that most other people in the restaurant were locals, many of whom knew each other and the owner. Everyone around us was constantly getting up and going from table to table to say hi and talk to others, while the owner was doing the same, making the rounds of the tables of people he knew. I didn’t expect that this was something I’d mind, and no one was rude to us or provided bad service, but it almost felt like we were invading a private event that we weren’t supposed to be part of. I think everyone was just excited to be back out and seeing people, but it somehow had the unintended consequence of making us feel a bit out of place.
All in all, our dinner at Ciccio was certainly good when considering the food. They definitely offer strong Italian cuisine in a casual setting, and it remains some of the best food we’ve had in Napa. However, since we were there for a sit-down dinner, some other aspects of the meal, such as the overly fast service and the general vibe in the room, soured us on the overall experience. We probably should have just gotten takeout and enjoyed it in our hotel room, which would have been much nicer. We’d come back to Ciccio in the future, but it wouldn’t be as much of a ‘must do.’
