A little disappointed
My husband and I went for our dinner anniversary, which we made note of in the reservation. We arrived 10 minutes late, but I called to let them know. They sat us directly beside the kitchen, which was cramped and unromantic. I joked that they were punishing us for being late. They did not move us. Instead they told us that “ foodies love that seat”. Well, we aren’t foodies. We wanted a nice romantic dinner at a high end place to celebrate 23 years of marriage. The presentation and service were absolutely lovely. I loved my Tuna. My husband’s 70.00 wagyu steak was very tough. He is a wagyu fan, and has never had to work to cut it. It was cooked medium, so no excuse. Our seating and my husband’s meal was disappointing. No mention was made about our anniversary. I’m not a complainer, having worked in food service and fine dining for collectively over 15 years. It’s been a while since we were this disappointed. The 230.00 ( plus tip) bill did not reflect the experience.

Top notch service what is one reason why I gave this a five star. The food is consistently good with some interesting and creative menu items. We had the duck and scallops for entrées and appetizers that were so filling we really didn’t even need the entrées. However, they all are good. No complaints.

This a great spot in Newport News. Food is always cooked to perfection. We are a big fan of the bison meatloaf.

We were there on a Friday night. The space is small as online pictures indicated. The food was very good. We got the cauliflower pakora which was excellent. We also got the charcuterie, which was good. Advice: also get the bread basket, as the small biscuits on the plate are not enough for all of the pate and other items. For the meal, she got the lambchops and I got the bison meatloaf. My meatloaf was as expected. Nothing spectacular but it was good. The lamb and sides were good. My wife also got a cocktail which was okay but nothing special. The prices were upscale but we felt matched the portion sizes. The service was excellent. Why only 4 stars? The atmosphere. It was cramped. We were seated at a two-person table near the bar. Every time someone came or went from the side of the bar, I was hit by their purse. It was a friendly place with regulars who knew each other, so they would gather at the bar and hug and dance around, again bumping me. Most of the other two person tables were right up against a wall. The tables were a little longer than some places so that helped. It was not very busy when we got there, but it was full packed by the time we left. The noise level kept increasing and by the time we were finishing our meal, we could barely hear each other speak. We were anticipating an upscale dining experience, but found ourselves in a bar with upscale table-service and menu. Also: We are glad they now use resy, because we have been trying to get reservations for over a year, but they don't answer the phone, there is no answering machine, and they don't respond to Facebook messages.

Everything was great. Tucked in among several shops on a busy road this place came highly recommended. We started with the squid and salad followed by lamb and scallops. All were elegantly prepared and delicious. Plentiful portions, professional and friendly service. Wine choices are nice with the option for a bottle if you buy two glasses. Atmosphere is inviting with upgraded lighting.

We went years ago and honestly wasn’t a fan. Stumbled in again after a failed attempt at another spot and were blown away!!!! Do delicious, service was tops, atmosphere was so lovely. Can’t wait to get back, bravo!!

My family of 8 came in for dinner to celebrate my brother’s college graduation. The dinner was phenomenal! My dad said it was one of the best meals he ever had. We ordered multiple shared appetizers and they were all delicious. Each of our entrees were awesome. The meatloaf was delicious along with the steak and the seafood entrees. James was our waiter and he was amazing. He made the night for our family really special. If we are ever in the area again, I would return in a heartbeat!

This was our first time eating here, as our daughter had bought us a gift card for our anniversary. First, make sure you book a reservation, as the restaurant is pretty small and is busy. For dinner, we had the fried oyster appetizer and then the ahi tuna and salmon for our meals. All of it was delicious! The fish was done perfectly. For dessert, we had the pound cake—it was really great! We really enjoyed our dinner, so glad our daughter found it. Thanks for the outstanding service. We’ll be back!!

We went to Circa 1918 to celebrate our anniversary. Warm, cozy atmosphere, pleasant, friendly service. Saying we had pork chops and meatloaf just doesn’t do it justice! Dinner was wonderful! We will be back!

Treated to a special dinner. Service was great throughout. I had the venison special. Venison can be a gamble in a restaurant, this was excellent. Just right and the rest of the plate was great too. Susan had the scallops, they were great too. I had a glass of the Malbec, just right, and Susan had the Rosso which was a red blend, good, middle of the road taste. We started with the charcuterie, which was very tasty but filled us up a lot. Circa is in Hilton Village in Newport News, not lots of parking around but OK. The place is not very big, reservations recommended, especially on weekends.
