I was expecting a little more.
My daughter who studies in Cal and I went to get lunch at Comal. Google showed them as being closed at 1:00pm but to our surprise it was open . We ordered each of the meat tacos and did a taste off. The Carnitas was my favorite, Chicken was okay, Al pastor didn't feel fresh. Guacamole and chips were good. The chips especially. The Salsas were okay. Total came to $32 with taxes and tips. I had heard great things. I'm sticking with El Tonnayance in SF for divey tacos.

I made a group reservation for 18 in the back patio and was charged a deposit of $250 to confirm the reservation. I was emailed the night before by the venue cancelling the reservation due to rain (not even 24 hrs notice). They offered no alternative for our group and were rude and unhelpful. I repeatedly followed up and requested the return of the deposit and if they could redirect members of my group to the restaurant around the corner that I just found. Meg, their events person, responded that they would make an exception and return my deposit (less 6% for processing). Unbelievable!
Be the first to ReplyFood is great.
Atmosphere fun, breezy. Guac & chips review (becuz let's face it, if they can't get that right it ain't gonna be muy rica): chips were , perfect crispiness, perfect oiliness, perfect salt. Guac: very good. Came with 3 salsas, I prefer the smoky one. Tamales were good (tried both the chicken mole & the polbano with pepitas -- that was our fave). Servers were kind, friendly, didn't hover but didn't leave us hanging.

The place was packed again and for good reason - the drinks are excellent, the food was great and the outdoor seating was nice and warm. We've been here several times in the past few years and we always have a good experience. In sunny weather the way back patio is even better. Their cocktail menu changes periodically and the Jack Satan is delicious.

Came out to Comal to bond with my boss and it was great! There is a parking structure within two blocks. There is also street parking but can be difficult to find, depending on the time you go.Came to the location around 6:30 and the atmosphere is so nice. Definitely a little loud, but this does depend on where you are sitting as well. There is a bar towards the front, tons of seating, and even a nice patio in the back with a bar.I ordered pork tacos, my boss ordered the enchiladas and we also got the guac with chips and three salsas to share. Everything was delicious! The pork I had was juicy and it came with some pickled carrots and jalapenos, which added nice acidity. The salsas and guac was also delicious. However, the only reason why I am not giving this location 5 stars was due to service. It might be because of how busy it was, but it felt like it took forever to be able to put in our order. And after they cleaned up our table, it took so long to get our check. Maybe they were being courteous as it seemed like we were having a really good conversation, but we were just waiting for the check. Overall, would still go again in the future. Would recommend if you want Mexican food and you're in the area, to go here!

Super yummy mexican/South America cuisine that was simple but so yummy. We had a variety of dishes, including the roasted chicken, which was super juicy, well seasoned, and served beautifully. Excellent service. The front desk was a bit lazy, but the server was so good, really young, for such great service. She looked about 15!!! But she knew her stuff!Thank you for a fun night out with great friends!!

Second time here and probably the last !One of the worst dining experiences in a while ... Our server was a a middle aged female and although the restaurant was not fully pack but she seemed to be running around like a MAD woman ... menus were tossed at us and plates were just about slammed at the table ... so annoyed, we just wanted to get out of there !I managed to flag a manager at the end & asked her if they were in fact short handed or not ... to my surprise, she said no that is not the case & she is sorry ! Anyhow , too bad but we are done with Comal & would not recommend it .
Be the first to ReplyExcellent shared menu, great service, wonderful cocktails.
We really enjoyed ourselves.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced and overrated.
The first thing I noticed is almost no one dining there looked Mexican. That was not a good sign already. The food that came a little later just confirmed my fear. It's unauthentic! If you like Americanized "Mexican" food, you will probably like this place since it also got a wide selection of drinks and a nice decor. But if you are like me who despise unauthentic Mexican food, skip this place.
Be the first to ReplyComal is wonderful! The food is great, as is the service.
The drinks are fantastic. And the ambiance is fun. Recommend!

This place has a great vibe, really nice outdoor seating area. Very busy for a weekday night , but we got a table within 10 minutes. We tried a watermelon salad which was not bad. The tlayudas were interesting, almost a fancy take on a "Mexican pizza". Wish there was more cheese. Nice drinks menu. 3.5/5, rounding up to 4 given how nice the staff was and the overall ambience.
Be the first to ReplyHorrible restaurant.
Music blasts so loud you can't hear each other talk. If you want a nice social evening, go somewhere else where you can hear yourself think.
Be the first to ReplyWe really enjoyed our visit.
It has a modern ambience and is suitable for kids. Our kids each had a cheese quesadilla. We shared chips with three types of salsa and a side of green beans, which were delicious. I had duck enchiladas and the wife had a mole tamale, both of which were filling. Our waitress was very attentive and answered our questions about the menu. We would go back if we are in Berkeley again.

I just got home from dining at Comal and I couldn't wait to review this place! First of all, the restaurant is very clean and there's both indoor and outdoor seating. They have a very long drink list with many interesting tequilas and mixed cocktails. We had a retirement celebration for one of my colleagues and sat in the private room downstairs. It was set up with one long table (two long tables connected). I love that we had such a nice intimate setting for the gathering. Service and food were both wonderful. I cannot wait to come back again! Before we even sat down, the appetizers were already set up: chips, salsas, guacamole, shrimp ceviche, pickled vegetables (the only thing that wasn't too popular with our group). Then once everyone had arrived, they started serving us one to two courses at a time, family style for sharing. The Ensalada piccata and spicy watermelon salad came out first, both very refreshing. Quesadillas with mushrooms were interesting, I never had veggie quesadillas like this before. Pork and beef albondigas be adobo was like a meatball in mole-like sauce. I thought this was the main course already, but then came the roasted chicken and Guadillo adobo pork spareribs. The spareribs were probably my favorite, super tender and flavorful. Rice, black beans, and tortillas came as sides. And to end the meal, we had flan, chocolate pudding, AND rice pudding! Boy was I stuffed! And we had leftovers so they set everything on the side with empty boxes for us to pack thing to-go. How thoughtful!

Comal is an up and comer for sure! This place has a great outside seating area. They serve a full bar and the staff was on point. We had a great time our first experience and there were 18 of us! If you complain about price you're in the wrong area... I definitely recommend

Really great outdoor seating area with lots of space and lovely plants and bar area! I ordered the Cochinita pibil tacos which were a bit of a disappointment. If I could give 3 and a half stars I would, due to the food being a bit pricey for a small portion and the flavor just not really being there. There were large pieces of inedible fat in the tacos and they were way too wet. The meat was soaked in sauce which was over powering and made the tortilla soggy. The tomato soup was delicious, however, a little heavy on the salt but not too bad. The fried tortilla strips were a nice touch in the soup as well. Another complaint I had was the host calling me and telling me that we had to be out by 7:00 because I was late to my reservation. This made me feel rushed at first, but our server reassured us when we ordered that we didn't really need to leave right at 7:00. Other than that, the service was great. Good food but I'd say it's a bit overpriced for what it is.

Comal has a fabulous outdoor patio with a cover, a fine garden, and a sharp menu of great dishes. Among the culinary enthusiasts of this gourmet ghetto, the agreement is absolute that Comal is the place to go. My dinner was a chile relleno and a fresh ceviche. My son had a mole poblano and Churrasco.

Our family loved having dinner at Comal because of the food, the seating outdoors (we're still not eating indoors due to ongoing COVID stuff), and most of all, the warmth of some of the employees. Also, this seems like a particularly inclusive and safe place to work at, in terms of LGBTQIA+ identity. Anyone can put a rainbow sticker on the front door, but this place obviously does more than that. The food is delicious. I am a big fan of regional Mexican food made with high quality ingredients, and we often eat at a similar place in Santa Cruz. We tried a little bit of everything-- Tlayuda, esquites, enchiladas, patatas fritas (french fries), guacamole, etc. The Tlayuda was a little dry, but kind of like having a salad on a tostada. Very light, and would also be good as a shared appetizer if you cut it into pieces like a pizza. The esquites appetizer (grilled corn with cheese and sauce) was SO GOOD, but a little spicy, so the kids passed on it. My partner really enjoyed the enchiladas. Chips, guacamole, and salsa trio were all solid. **I wish they had burritos for kids, but we were able to figure out something for them-- sides of rice and beans, and tamales with mole on the side. At the similar place in Santa Cruz, they have burritos for kids that come with fruit and a small agua fresca, and they love it. Maybe this place doesn't have as many children eating there? They have plentiful seating outdoors in a large mostly-covered patio. It was a bit noisy because it was packed around 6pm, but it was really a nice ambience. Our main waiter was effective at their job, and if that was our main experience, it would have been nothing to write home about. But, one of the other staff members who delivered food really made our evening by connecting with one of our kids. Pan was incredible, and my kids wanted to go back the rest of the week, both for the food and in the hopes of seeing Pan again. In my experience, a lot of spaces in the bay area don't feel kid-friendly, and I often joke that people are more enthusiastic about our dog than our kids, especially after moving from a smaller town. So to have this staff member connect so meaningfully with our child was incredibly special, and made our week. The next time we're in the area, we're definitely returning. With regards to reservations, a few days before I made a dinner reservation online at their website, and was glad I did-- with kids, waiting 20+ minutes is excruciating. There's a parking garage a block or two away, as well.

Great find! I absolutely loved everything I tasted! So many complex, unique flavors! My only disappointment was that there were only corn tortillas (even for the quesadilla which is usually a safe choice for me (I'm very sensitive/mildly allergic to corn). Modern urban feel with a cool back patio with heaters & a fire pit

We just organized a birthday dinner here and loved the set menu and the service. The variety and quality of food was fabulous, my favorites being the salad and the roast chicken and rice.
Be the first to ReplyReally good Mexican food.
Best service ever, our waiter was there when we needed him but we never felt rushed or like he was hovering. They're guacamole & salsa appetizer was really amazing, so many fresh salsas. Portions are small so you can try a couple of things.

Had heard about comal for ages but didn't really know what to expect coming to it for the first time. The outdoor patio was amazing! Heat lamps up top so basically every seat was a warm seat. Menu felt kinda fancy, but I got a Chile relleno which was super saucy and pretty good. Other pictured dish are the lengua tacos. Also got margaritas, they were super strong! Came on a Thursday night and there was salsa music and people dancing. Super fun ambiance and will def come back again.

My boyfriend and I had been wanting to try Comal for a while now, so we popped in earlier this week. Comal is a fun atmosphere for a coworker dinner or a casual first date, but it is not a romantic. Even on Monday night, it is busy and loud!We ordered the salsa trio, a bear and a cocktail, beef and pork albóndigas, the empanadas, and enchiladas. Everything was good, but not outstandingly memorable. Quick service and kind servers!Unfortunately after eating, my stomach started hurting pretty badly, and after leaving the restaurant, I ended up throwing up in a planter box down the street. Something I ate did not sit well.Glad we tried Comal, but I don't know if we will be back anytime soon.
