Food was ok but not Michelin star price worthy.
Went with my wife and bill came out to be $370, they had a credit card charge which was about 4% of your bill.. haven't come across this a long time. Food was mostly a bit salty for my taste, loved the dessert though (potato ice cream). Very interesting menu but not worth the price to go back another time.
Be the first to ReplyArrived about 7 minutes after our reservation time.
.were told it be a 10 minute wait and sat at the bar...ended up waiting closer to 35-40 minutes. Cute ambiance for a date spot. Bartender was super friendly. Servers were all lovely. Everything tasted good but the portions here are very small, even for a tasting menu. We both left a bit hungry which is disappointing considering the price (nearly $500 for 2 with 2 drinks each). Our mushroom tarte was unfortunately served cold and the second one they sent was still luke warm. One "course" was two slivers of lettuce with some thinly sliced root veggies. The scallop crudo was ever so slightly larger than an amuse bouche. They also must've been running out of their potato ice cream bc the portion they served us was visibly smaller than what I saw other tables receive earlier in the night and what I saw online. The wagyu was one very thin slice with a few tiny crumbles of beet. I would've been pleased with 2 slices. The best course of the night was the Hamachi--both portion and taste were great! Bottom line this is a cute date spot but I wouldn't go if you're really hungry...or not willing to spend $$$

I'm probably one of the few people in NYC who isn't a big fan of Wildair, so I was a little skeptical heading into this meal given it's the same chefs. Needless to say, Contra was fantastic. Unique flavors, friendly staff, intimate ambiance, just great all around. Hard to believe it's the same duo.We got the hiramasa, beef tartare, caviar and tofu, prawn, jonah crab, mushroom tart, and the potato and huckleberry dessert - all to share. I think this was the perfect amount of food for us.Everything was delicious. Hiramasa - super light but full of flavor. Beef tartare - easily the best I've ever had, so rich and moist thanks to the mole component. Caviar and tofu - basically their take on a chawanmushi, loved it. Prawn - don't laugh, it's literally one prawn on a plate, however it was packed with unreal amounts of flavor (but I wouldn't get it again). Jonah crab - super rich, lots of crab flavor, and came in dumpling-form which was a pleasant surprise. Mushroom tart - shockingly rich, my partner couldn't finish it. Potato and huckleberry dessert - super unique and very light! They have a "carte blanche" option on the menu. Unfortunately this does NOT mean one of everything hahaha. It's basically just chef's choice of an assortment of the menu - no specials or anything thrown in.We didn't opt for the wine pairing, instead choosing a couple of their cocktails. Very tasty!Would absolutely come back since they change up the menu relatively frequently. Real special occasion spot with dark, intimate ambiance and a casual vibe.
Be the first to ReplySmall restaurant but really cute interior and decoration.
Also like the utensil and the plate contra is using. 6 dish for two girl is pretty enough.Food:BreadLike the butter!Wagyu beef tartareSesame is in the middle of the wagyu beef, beef is also mixed with seaweed taste like stuff, it also has a bit spicy taste. I think the beef is really tender and "melt" on your tongue.Caviar & tofuCaviar is sweet. The tofu(steamed egg?) is sooooo soft. Love this dish! Has three layer of flavor. First sweet then salty then some tofu/egg taste. Like it a lot!Hiramasa crudoThe sauce is really nice, the grapefruit piece also added some flavor. The raw fish in it is average.Carabinero prawnThe prawn comes from Spain. Really high quality. It's sweet and I like it!Jonah crabHas pork in it. Average.MonkfishI love this dish! The fish was soooooo fresh and tender. Love the texture of the fish and the sauce on it is so good.Came here because it's Michelin 1 star. But won't come back again. It's not bad but I just I think there are better Michelin 1 star out there with better value for money.
Be the first to ReplyThis was a mediocre meal.
The best dish was the beef tartare and then the steak dish. The drinks were not that great and we embarrassingly had to return one back because it was overdosed with lemon.

I'm not really a fine dining person and this was my first time eating "fine dining." Had low expectations and still I thought the food was mostly just okay. I really hoped it would be better. The flavors were definitely unique, but unique does not always mean amazing tasting. There was a tofu caviar dish that tasted mostly like tofu (I don't like tofu) with random explosions of saltinessThe first few bites of the beef tartare were pretty good. But over time it felt super oily. The best dish was the monk fish. If every dish was to that flavoring and enjoyment, this would be a 3.5 star place in my books. Really wish I could like this place. But nonetheless I didn't.
Be the first to ReplyThis is the first Michelin place I've been to that I can't
This is the first Michelin place I've been to that I can't give a 5 star to. It's still great, but doesn't quite live up to the excellence set by many other establishments. The place is hard to miss, as I walked right by the store front before going back. You should see a small neon red sign shining through the glass exterior. It's a long and narrow interior, starting with the bar and check in area. Not sure if they were short staffed, or if some parties stayed late, but myself and many others who came in around 9:00pm on a Saturday had to wait 20-30 minutes past our reservation times to be seated. Let me stop here to praise the staff, from bartender, to host, to our server; they were all friendly and courteous people. They checked in, apologized for the delays, and were overall just good peeps. The delayed started turned into a lagging pace throughout the night, as we were not out of the restaurant until 11:30! This is half of the reason for knocking one star. The other is for the dishes. We opted for the Carte Blanche, and had 6 dishes in all. I only loved 3 of them. My favorites were: wagyu beef tartare, caviar & tofu, and potato & huckleberry ice cream. The monkfish was OK. But I laughed at the fact that the sprouting cauliflower entrรฉe is $20 as a standalone. While fine, it's more of an accompaniment than a true dish on its own. Finally, I just didn't like the flavor of the prawn. Would have preferred something lightly fried, or just removed from the shell. On average, it did all taste good, but not impeccable. I felt like there was too much similarity between the sauces on a few dishes. However, the $120 price tag for a prix fixe menu is a good deal.

I was highly recommended by one of my foodie friends to visit Contra as it was the best experience he had while visiting NYC. I unfortunately did not have the same experience. Firstly, I would like to say that the service is exceptional. Very friendly and they are all very knowledgable of the dishes and drinks, which is on par with Michelin rated restaurants. The price and the amount of food for each dish is on par with Michelin restaurants as well. It is in NY so that seating was very tight. You feel like you're essentially part of the table next to you and we had to constantly keep moving are table every-time the neighbor had to get up.Now, reviewing the food... I had Wagyu beef tartare ($24), Sprouting cauliflower ($20), Monk fish ($22)Monk fish - very fresh and the butter-dashi sauce was great! My wife and I enjoyed it. They probably should improve the presentation though as you can see on the photos. Sprouting cauliflower - They charred and cooked the cauliflower to perfection. However, the sauce was too tangy and the cauliflower was tad bit too oily. Wagyu beef tartare - Good beef however, the sauce that they had on the bottom was not good. I would like say that the texture did not go well with the beef. Also the they placed furikake on top of it that just totally RUINED the good quality beef. I'm Japanese and furikake is something i grew up with and the ones they used tasted very cheap. Something we can buy at a supermarket for a dollar. It totally overpowered the beef and all i tasted was the cheap furikake. If it wasn't for that it would of been great. Overall, pleasant visit but I would go somewhere else for this price. Amazing server but very constricted space. The food is made with utmost care but wasn't for me.
Be the first to ReplyTLDR: one of the best tasting meals Ive had this year.
Been dreaming of the crab and tomato dish for the last week. I've been meaning to come to contra for quite a while and I've heard quite a bit about it so I was extremely excited; my expectations were high. Came with a friend so we were able to try almost all of the menu. We had: the tartare, caviar and tofu, Jonah crab, stuffed chicken wing, mushroom tart, monkfish, and pork. Of these dishes, our favorites were the caviar tofu, crab, and pork. The caviar tofu reminded me of steamed eggs, but cold. It was surprisingly sweet but satisfyingly umami at the same time. The pork was cooked so well it was my friend's favorite of the night. My favorite was the crab dish. The crab was served with this buttery, rich sabayon which was amazing but what really did it for me was the tomatoes. They were acidic and bright and really created a unique experience of flavor in my mouth. One of my favorite bites I have ever had. Monkfish was also quite nice; the lemon sauce was delicious and addictively acidic. My least favorite was the stuffed chicken wing. I wasn't too excited about it. The wagyu tartare was also quite unusual for me. The flavor reminded me of pepperoni? We had both desserts. My friend really enjoyed the potato ice cream. It was salty and sweet and paired nice with the huckleberry. It reminded me of dipping fries into ice cream. I really enjoyed the Concord grape granita. The burnt vanilla mousse and shards of meringue were great textural components. Service was friendly and quick. They accidentally forgot to bring out one of the dishes but they fixed it pretty quickly and were extremely apologetic. The overall vibe was fine dining with relaxed, casual atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyGreat choice for a date.
Service was spectacular and so was the food. Cozy. I really enjoyed the tasting menu.

had a good time at Contra with some friends as a sort of belated birthday dinner. We each picked a few items off the prix fixe menu and sampled around -- good food but definitely not filling (as expected, I guess). Flavors were light and highlighted the seafood in each dish well, but maybe I wasn't feeling it that day because I just don't have the strongest impression of the dishes. Favorites were the hiramasa and the soy tofu, but I did not like wagyu crudo :( 5/10, was still enjoyable but maybe just a one time experience. For a Michelin star restaurant, probably one of my least favorite so far. Would rather go somewhere else considering the price point.
Be the first to ReplySuper glad to have found a spot at the bar at this place.
Really popular spot in Soho and great vibe and super awesome service.Went with the chef's choice tasting menu (4 savory and 1 sweet) and overall was pretty satisfied. Couple of clunkers in there (celery root, eel) but the waygu, monkfish and strawberry dessert (like a strawberry cloud) were amazing.Biggest issue was the kitchen got backed up and at times they were like 25 minutes between courses. Definitely too much for a five course tasting and also this place has one single-hole tiny bathroom for an entire restaurant of people. Could've been excellent and wound up mostly pretty good instead.

I was lucky enough to be seated at the bar on Thursday night after coming in last minute. Ambiance was great - and all of their dishes are so well composed and delicious. Cannot recommend the wagyu enough - and they have a lovely wine list.
Be the first to ReplyDid the carte blanche menu, bar seating.
Bar seating was spacious, no problem enjoying the meal. Service is friendly, I formative, but non-intrusive. Food is refined with some tastefully bold flourishes.
Be the first to ReplyThis was horrible.
There was a sociopath named lulu. She was screaming. The drinks taste like poo. Another person here was screaming because they wanted alcohol. I will never be coming here again
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely exquisite dining experience.
Two of us split 4 plates and were completely satisfied and too full for dessert! Inventive, phenomenal dishes you wouldn't find anywhere else. The eel in particular blew my mind - it was smoked and soft, similar to pork belly and just a joy to eat. If anything, some of the dishes felt a little safe and mild (hence the 4 stars instead of 5) but that could have just been how we ordered. Will absolutely be coming back to try the rest of the menu!
Be the first to ReplyWe came here on a Saturday evening with a reservation.
The entrance is small but there are quite a few tables inside. We had Contra Spritz, Gim-less and Hibiscus & Lemon as drinks. We ordered blue prawn, crab, and smoked eel & potato ecrase as appetizers, lobster tart and lamb as entrees, satsuma mandarin and amaranth as desserts. The food taste good but nothing really stood out to be honest. The service is good. This place is worth trying but I don't think I'll come back again. I was expecting the food to be better given that it's a Michelin one star restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food and good service.
They have a nice wine menu with skin contact wines as well.

Came here for New Years Eve dinner which was $200 per person this year, more than their typical set menu which is $110. Favorites were this oyster and caviar dish as well as the lobster tarte. I don't think either of them are on their regular menu, but were more special dishes for NYE. Overall, I thought the food was good / creative, but nothing spectacular in terms of taste. I likely wouldn't go back again, but really glad I gave the restaurant a try. I think the restaurant is very thoughtful with their dishes and they have an open kitchen concept where you can see them making the food. While I appreciate the creativity with the dishes, taste and ingredient wise, Contra wasn't quite my cup of tea.
Be the first to ReplyWent in October.
Wine pairing wasn't optimal. An extra glass of wine was given, which we didn't request, and we were charged for it. Dessert was the only home run. ย The only reason I'm posting this is because we discussed how it was one of our worst meals of 2021. Wildair was a much better experience. I may give this place a second shot but I won't subject my friends to such crap.
Be the first to ReplyI want to preface this review and rating with a bit of my
I want to preface this review and rating with a bit of my background: My boyfriend had been dying to go here, the menu and options are very much his palette (bold/rich flavors, unique pairings, one of the kind type meals). When I saw the menu online, I knew this restaurant would be an interesting experience because nothing really stood out to me (I think it might have been a bit too unique for me to comprehend what it could potentially taste like) and there were no real "entrees".We had a reservation at 8pm on a Saturday night, they promptly seated us. The table itself was rather small and it was very close to other parties. It didn't bother us but not the place to have an intimate conversation without everyone overhearing. It also meant for wandering eyes when the food arrived and finger pointing (lol) but that's to be expected at a unique restaurant like this. Our waitress was really sweet, I wish I remembered her name. She was kind enough to tuck my coat into the chair (no coat racks/hooks/coat check) and give us her thoughts on our order. She helped me pick out a tasty natural wine and suggested the smoked eel which was my favorite dish we ordered that night. Hat's off to her! Let's get into the food now: The start was the delicious sourdough bread with whipped butter. It was decadent and delicious as bread and butter is. We asked for seconds and they did not forget it about as the previous reviewer mentioned. Super generous that night with the bread and butter (as they should be!). Our waitress suggested we potentially could order the whole menu given the plate size which I'm glad we didn't.. extremely $$$ and ย based on what we did get, I don't think it would've been worth it. We got the fish tartare (amberjack), wagyu beef crudo, crab, smoked eel & potato and the monkfish. I have a nut allergy otherwise I think we would've considered the celery. ($170 total) What I would get again (keep in mind, these are small portions): - amberjack tartare (great texture, light sauce, a great starter) - smoked eel & potato (delicious flavor, they complimented eachother well) - crab (my boyfriend loved this, the dashi was too salty for me but he thoroughly enjoyed it) What I would skip: - wagyu (I really wanted to love this but I think I went into it thinking it would be like a carpaccio, instead it's really focused around the mole, the meat is simply a vehicle to house it. The mole was quite sweet and I think I had expected something different so it threw off my experience) - monkfish (This has potential, it was wrapped in chard leaves and had a "dumpling" on the side with pureed squash and sunflower seeds but the flavor just wasn't for me. A bit too savory/smokey and I didn't think it meshed well) Overall I would not come back but it was still a good experience to try out in NYC. If I lived in the neighborhood I would consider going by for a glass of wine and a few plates but it's a come hungry leave hungry type of establishment for a dinner meal unless you're willing to shell out.
Be the first to ReplyHigh-end food made by people who don't like food.
The soul was taken out of every dish. How do you spoil amazing blue prawns? By wrapping them in an overpowering shiso leaf and serving them with an unnecessary vegetable crudo and bland sauce. The prawns didn't stand a chance against that team. It was the most spectacularly unremarkable dish. The rest faired better but every dish was somehow wrong. Potato ecrase w smoked eel - tasted like a fairly good gastropub brunch dish. But the tiny serving made any 'comfort food' feeling impossible to achieve. Arugula leaves thrown on top - unseasoned and without any dressing- were just sad. Waguy beef crudo was a total miss. The medley of seeds and sweet mole completely killed the meat itself. A pity, it could have been just served w sea salt and olive oil and be great. Best dishes were the crab in broth and boudin noir. There was nothing wrong w them, but neither were they great. Just solid. Overall, the food felt like a science lab experiment where the people cooking don't get any joy from eating. ย Trying to combine flavors that don't usually go together can yield amazing results, just not here.Service was great though.

Well executed food with bold flavors, obscure wines and great service in a laid back atmosphere. Great for dates or a fun night out. The menu is a la carte but also offers carte blanche (I think 5 savory and 2 desserts of the chef's choice). The 2 of us opted to order most of the small menu and a bottle of young pinot that turned out to be good. The pilsner was really crisp and good. We shared:Fish tartare - the ramp kimchi added nice umami. Would order againWagyu beef crudo - came w a mole sauce and chili (not spicy). Would order againCrab with dashi broth - the broth was so flavorful and delicate. Would order againSmoked eel and potato - little bits of eel and creamy potatoes. A bit heavy but I would order againBlood sausage and beans - slightly crisp top, subtle flavors. It was good but I don't think I'd order it again Pork secreto - thinly sliced pork quickly seared so it's super tender and moist, served with big brussel sprout leaves. While it was delicious, it was too much meat by the end of the meal and I wouldn't order again, but if you're a big meat eater, this dish is filling.Date dessert with chicory coffee and sweet cream - delicious way to end dinner. Would order again. I think 6 dishes (including dessert) would be enough for 2 people, but if you're 2 dudes then order 7.
