Contramar Ciudad de México Reviews from The Last Year
Best seafood restaurant in Mexico City
My husband found this restaurant based on Google reviews and we had a reservation and OMG ! Delicious food and our server Fabian was real attentive! Every table at the restaurant was taken and food for just amazing !
Not What You Would Expect
No no no! Tourist trap! Believe me when I say, I’ve been to many Mexican seafood establishments. When simply judging the food, this one deserves less than one star! We came here after watching Eva show where she highly recommended this place. No! No! No! The servers were kind, polite and friendly. However, I feel compelled to give it my rating solely on the food. All the tables at this place were occupied. You need advance reservations in order to dine here. The food! My daughter’s soup literally tasted like the mushrooms came from a can. Perhaps it was the dishes we ordered, because we didn’t agree with the other high star reviews that we read. This place should not be charging high pesos for the seafood they prepare and serve. Keep walking and find a better place to eat, your palate deserves it.
Great!
We were lucky enough to get in for lunch without a reservation. Service from our waiter Jesus was great. We loved the tuna tostadas and the snapper with red and green sauce. We would definitely go back!
Don’t trust the hype
This seafood restaurant came highly recommended, not just by friends but pretty much all travel sites. We found that public hype is not always reliable. The dining hall is huge and incredibly noisy. Not in itself a deal breaker, but the food was not impressive and definitely did not meet our expectations. Nothing stood out as special or particularly tasty, and between the four of us, we sampled a variety of dishes, including the signature whole fish. On the plus side, the service was excellent, it was no problem to get in on a Saturday even without a reservation, and the prices were moderate.
Way better than its sister Entremar, in all aspects.
95% tourists and the other 5% are those who bring the tourists to the restaurant. I tried to make a reservation on open table, the minute they open the reservation (4 weeks in advance), but all booked. How and why, I do not know…. So, I made a reservation at its sister restaurant “Entremar”, which wide open for reservation even within 2 hours of time of dinner. We were disappointed with the experience at Entremar. We did not like it, almost we hated it. (Read my separate review about that restaurant). So, we were walking by Contramar at 12:30pm on Monday and we stopped by and they seated us immediately. What a big difference than our bad experience at Entremar, even with almost, if not exact, menu items, but not similar chefs and cooks. Although, the bar tender at Entremar is way better than Contramar as he is not rushing to make the cocktails at the extremely busy one at Contremar. Food: very good, but not exceptional, not even excellent… I mean it is truly OVERRATED. There are way better restaurants in Mexico City, even for you the tourist. Value. Too expensive for this overrated food and establishment. Service. The guys are amazing. Very attentive, friendly and courteous. Ambience. This is an extremely crowded full of tourists with of-course a touristy cloths. Like us. Rating. 4 for food, 5 for service. 3 for ambience. 3 for value. Recommendations. Spend your money somewhere else, unless you are only planning to eat where the tourists eat.
Hugely disappointing
We tried this restaurant based on some friends’ recommendation. We went for lunch on a Sunday; we did not have any reservation. The place was quite busy, but there were still almost a dozen unoccupied tables. We were allowed in, but were taken to a table right in front of the entrance to the restrooms. When we turned down this table, we were taken in front of the entrance to the very busy kitchen. There were 4 tables in this row, all unoccupied, but they chose to sit us in the most uncomfortable and undesirable table. The waiter sort of apologized and said most of the tables were reserved. However, the three other tables in our row never got occupied up to the time we finished our meal, and the same with two or three other vacant tables in the restaurant. Putting us in such a tight spot would have been excusable if it was the only table available and they were trying to accommodate us. Contramar has so many waiters and initially facing the entrance to the kitchen started to give me a headache because of the constant movement - waiters constantly going in and out. When I changed my place so that my back was turned to the entrance, my chair kept on getting jostled and bumped. It was a really unpleasant experience. It could have been alleviated if the food was reasonably passable. But it was mediocre at best. I ordered the seafood soup. It was a very thin broth made from boiling shrimp heads and shells and flavored with lime. There were pieces of fish, three small shrimps, maybe a couple of little clams, a few small pieces of octopus and some chunks of undercooked achiote. I really don’t understand why we could not have been given a more comfortable location even if we did not have any reservation. It was not as though we were paying a cheaper price. It’s exactly the same menu, so why are they giving better treatments to some people and treating others so shabbily? It would have been better if they turned us away. We always received good treatments in other restaurants we tried during this trip, even though we never made any reservations . Instead of establishing goodwill, I cannot now, in all sincerity, say anything nice about this restaurant. I will or course express my disappointment and dissatisfaction to others who may ask me about my experience.
Loud, chaotic, off-putting atmosphere
I made a reservation here well in advance because this place was highly recommended. To be fair, I was not feeling well by the time we were seated, but the minute we walked in I wanted to leave. The noise was deafening. There is one big room with tables crammed in close together and it was uncomfortably hot, even though the outside temperature was comfortable. The waiter kept pressing us to order. We decided to leave without eating because it was so physically uncomfortable, so I can't comment on the food. If you really want to try the food, I would recommend asking for an outdoor table, because the indoor dining room was quite awful to me.
Don't miss this restaurant - if you can get in!
What a great restaurant! The food was magnificent. Expect only fish becuase they only offer fish - but in so many varied configurations! We had the most delicious tuna tostadas - the very best dish we have had all week! We had king fish tacos with pineapple and cilantro. We had fish cerviche. We had shrimp with angel hair pasta perfectly blended with just enough butter. We had the most amazing desserts too - A fig tart, a beautiful meringue cake with fresh strawberries. YUM. And a helpful and highly attentive server. Could not have been a better experience. Be prepared, the restaurant is lively and very loud.
Great food, fast and helpful service
Place was packed. Our server was quick to recommend some items. We had the tuna tostadas( good but one of the tostadas had a stringy piece on it), scallop ceviche which was great. Our entrees were great, we did order the fish with green and red sauce. Desserts were nice as well, although we couldn’t try the merengue because it was already sold out for the night. Definitely would come back here.
Those tuna tostadas!!!!
This place is amazing. The food was great. The service was fabulous. The wait staff were so attentive. Great recommendations on what to try. I cannot say enough good things about them.
Delicious Food Poisioning
Could not wait to try! I was so excited to get a table after a friend highly recommended. My husband and I sampled everything that had the best praises. We loved every bite and wanted more! Sadly, I later got food poisoning from what I suspect was the tuna tostada since it hit me pretty quickly and was the only thing I had seperately from my husband the entire day.
Worth it 🙌
This place was outstanding. It was super busy and noisy but I understand why. The food was incredible and worth the wait to get in. We started with the ahi tostadas. This dish has me dreaming about it. I could eat this over and over again. Next we had the pescado al pastor tacos. These were also outstanding and interesting flavors. Finally we had the pescado alla talla. It was really tasty and offered two different sauces. Overall a great meal and must have stop to Mexico City.
Consistency Guaranteed
It’s been eight years since I first ate at Contramar and I’d say this second visit was on par: You’re going to get really good seafood. What’s changed since then are your alternative eating options. We had meals elsewhere that outshined Contramar. So if you’ve got time for choices, this place still is a good choice. If not, you may want to skip it. The tried-and-true tuna tostadas were amazing. Simple yet packed with flavor. The flounder was delicious thanks to the sear laden with Adobo and spices, although it was on the edge of being overcooked. This meal’s crowning achievement was the grilled octopus. The texture of the meat was amazingly soft and without any chewiness that I typically encounter when I order octopus in the U.S.
Good food, but not a pleasant experience for the price
We have eaten at Contramar several times over the years visiting Mexico City, but after this experience I would not go back. Tables seemed even more jammed than before into the huge open space and the decibel level topped 80 (shouting necessary at a table for four). We were lucky to be in the back corner by an open door to the sidewalk, so at least we had a breeze. About halfway through the meal, the restaurant started setting up a table for 20 right next to us. Started by pushing our table closer to the corner (they did warn us) then the waiters were squeezing by our table carrying heavy chairs over our heads. Nobody apologized and the waiters seemed intent on getting us out of there as fast as possible. Yes, the food was good, but Mexico City is full of great seafood restaurants; we had a more flavorful seafood stew the next day in a fonda at the Xochimilco market hall.
Good food, but...
The food was delicious, but the experience was lacking. Very crowded, noisy and we felt like the waiters were trying to rush us out.
Overhyped, can skip
Everyone I know highly recommended this spot for us to try during our CDMX trip so we had high expectations. The wait was 2 hours even at 4pm but we were able to put our name down and walk around. Ambiance/decor felt a little dated for such a popular restaurant. The food was okay, really nothing spectacular. We got the tuna tostadas, large fish, and some other various tacos. Honestly, nothing really stood out to me except for the octopus tacos. I don’t even usually like octopus but these were delicious paired with the salsa it’s served with. The rest of the food was good but really nothing special, and the fish, which I was most excited about, was a little bland. Overall everything was decent but I don’t understand the hype surrounding this spot.
The authentic flavors are waiting…
We stopped by , without a Res ( although it’s highly recommended), hoping to get in. Lunch time , as it opens seems to be the best time . There’s seating outside( not our preference, it’s a busy street). Indoors , it’s ample and bustling with Activity. Our server, “ Faban” took our drink orders ( they have a full s service bar , as well as nonalcoholic beverages) Their selections are varied, fr soup to nuts. They can address most “ allergies” . I preface this because, after securing a reservation for a “ highly” popular “Michelin “ rated restaurant, We were informed the night before , that they could not accommodate “ allergies”!! So bear that in mind, if someone in your has allergies We started with “ toastadas de atún” Faban made sure that each food item was safe for our family member, never felt left out. He went beyond expectations. The food , was delicious, well executed, beautifully presented. Pescado a la talla( whole fish), tacos esmedregal, There’s an assortment of sauces, spicey, savory ,that you can sample. We ordered one dessert, postre de higo OMG Great service, fantastic food!,

Thank you for the question, if a seller is working on answering your bid, you cannot cancel it until their time is up and the bid is released back to you. The full amount of funds then go back into your AT account. Typically a seller has 48-72 hours to complete the bid.
