Copra San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
Great high end South Indian cuisine
This used to be the old dosa on Fillmore. We loved that restaurant so we’re excited to try it now. The food lived up to his expectations. The dosa was terrific. The lamb dish was flavorful. The coconut dessert was amazing.

Ever since the restaurant opened, i have been meaning to dine here! Initially, weekend reservations were hard to come by! Been to the other of Chef Sri's restaurants, including his Michelin Star days at Campton Place, and have always loved how he brings authenticity with creativity to elevate Indian cuisine! Finally, got a reservation for a weekday, for 4 of us! And, kinda in a way to celebrate our wedding too! Food was amazing! The shrimp, OMG! That was amazingly delicious! The chicken (kori gassi) - yes please! The truffle appam - double yes please! That hamachi collar - get in my tummy please! The desserts!! Can never have enough room for the desserts haha.. and the watalappan and green apple halwa, both were yum! Among all these shiny stars, biryani didn't leave enough mark. And, not to say, cocktails were not good, but i have had much better cocktails! Coming back? Definitely yes!
After hearing raving reviews about this place - we finally
After hearing raving reviews about this place - we finally got a reservation to go!! The ambience was nice thought a bit loud (probably not great for a first date but good for groups of friends)! Very aesthetic and pretty decor and plants all around. We got lots of items to share - from reading recs of other people, we liked the chutney dips, the truffle appam, rasam poori, octopus, fried chicken, curry with dosa, biryani, and a coconut dessert! I really enjoyed the appam, octopus, fried chicken and biryani. The rasam poori was not a highlight for me as I've had pani puri with friends before and felt this was a bit overpriced and not amazing for street food. The other dishes were delicious as were the cocktails (especially the ones with a bit of spice to it). Service was good, waiters were attentive, but I felt the food in the beginning was served pretty quickly but was then slower later on. Would definitely recommend trying it out but it's not somewhere I would go on a regular.

Typically Indian food is not my go to but I have heard how good Copra is so decided to give a try. TLDR is worth a try but not necessarily the most "value" and will not be me first choice to go back to given my cuisine preferences. Lots of very unique form of dishes like the Masala Dosa and Rasam Poori. Favorite dish though was probably the Octopus - very very chewy and nicely done.
Writing this after 2 visits - one dinner and one brunch.
Amazing Indian place from Chef Srijith !! Rasam Poori - 7* Uttapam - 5* Kottu Parotta - 5* Bloody Mary - 5* Salty City - 5* Phenomenal ambience, great service!
Incredible dishes, service, and decor.
Every single dish was incredibly flavorful. Highly recommend the black cod. Will definitely return!
The flavors are incredible, and each dish is made with so
The flavors are incredible, and each dish is made with so much care that it's tough to choose a favorite. The servers are really kind and friendly. I appreciate how they take the time to explain each dish and the best way to enjoy it. It's a lovely touch. Shout-out to Brandon for being a great host as well!
Come here with people who aren't picky and who love to eat
Come here with people who aren't picky and who love to eat and ain't shy about using their hands because you will be licking your fingers and then some! Food is spiced well and not for the weak. The flavors in these dishes come together so well! Gave 4 stars because we felt a bit rushed, and our server just didn't seem to be in the mood of telling us more about the menu or offering suggestions. Dessert was ok, I would skip and just get some ice cream at nearby places. Photos listed in order are: Fried Chicken, Oysters, Cocktails (Tumeric & Lemon Chili), Konkan Crab Curry, Chargrilled Bone Marrow, Watalappan
Amazing food and service.
We had the oysters, chaat, rasam poori and black cod. I was blown away by all!
Everything was excellent! Loved the food! We sat at the bar
Everything was excellent! Loved the food! We sat at the bar and really enjoyed speaking with Kata about the food.
Best restaurant in San Francisco.
The service, phenomenal. The ambiance, emasculate. The food, 1 billion out of 10. While Indian food is my favorite food, South Indian is not something I love that much (not a bit coconut guy). However, this was sensational. No overwhelming flavors except delicious! For drinks we got the Lemon Chili cocktail and a Mint Mojito. What didn't we order! And so much we could have ordered to try but ate soooo much. We got the: - PERIGORD BLACK TRUFFLE SOFT EGG APPAM, PEPPER, CHIVES (8.5/10) - BEACH PEANUT MASALA WRAP (8/10) - RASAM POORI (8/10) - SLOW - COOKED OCTOPUS (10000/10) - MYSORE MASALA DOSA (10/10) - BLACK COD POLLICHATHU (10/10) Beyond delicious - all of it! And was treated to delish mango sorbet for my birthday dessert! Would recommend this to everyone!!
This is the best meal I have had in many years in SF.
So refreshing to taste the spices and incredible technique of Chef Sri as well as the fabulous cocktails, impeccable service, and the beautiful decor and ambiance. Highlights were... everything! The chutneys, chicken curry, the lamb, the gluten free breads... the gin, rum, rye cocktails... we tried four! And the coconut dessert with the mango sorbet. Unforgettable experience. Totally worth to reserve in advance and wait for the big day you are able to dine here!
Beautiful restaurant and delicious food
Loved the ambiance! Beautiful decor. My favorite dishes were the cod, puris and dosas. Also try the cocktails! Creative and refreshing.
Allergy Alert: A Disastrous Dining Experience
For individuals with severe allergies, it is strongly advised to steer clear of this restaurant as it could potentially result in an emergency room visit 🚨. This restaurant is incredibly chaotic. Upon arrival, the server inquired about food allergies for our party, including two individuals with severe allergies. Despite noting down the allergens, the first dish arrived with a large radish garnish, causing concern. The server replaced it, but the second dish repeated the mistake, extending our wait time to receive our food. All dishes we ordered were delayed. A third error occurred when the server brought shrimp to our table, only to realize it was meant for another table. We expressed our concern to the server who then called the manager. The manager was unapologetic about the delays and allergen mistakes, claimed the restaurant was busy. This lack of responsibility, especially with severe allergies involved, is unacceptable for a fine dining establishment. The manager contacted the general manager, who brushed off the errors, attributing them to the common occurrences in the service industry during a busy night. In cases of severe allergies, there is absolutely no tolerance for errors. Take responsibility for your mistakes instead of attributing them to a busy night.
A culinary journey through South India, Copra takes San Francisco by storm!
Copra is a new restaurant in the heart of San Francisco that is quickly making a name for itself as one of the best restaurants in the world. It has undoubtedly raised the bar for South Indian cuisine and left an indelible mark on our taste buds and hearts. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enthralled by the stunning decor. The ambiance was a perfect blend of modern elegance and traditional charm, creating an inviting and cozy atmosphere. The attention to detail was clear in every aspect, from the artful lighting to the tasteful use of colors, making it an incredible dining experience. Now let's talk about the star of the show - the food. Under the culinary genius of Chef Srijith Gopinathan, the menu is an authentic celebration of South Indian flavors and culinary artistry. The Gunpowder Goli Vadai was a true revelation, with its crispy exterior and the explosion of flavors from the gunpowder seasoning. Equally impressive was the Rasam Poori, a mouthwatering fusion of tangy passion fruit rasam and perfectly cirspy poori that left us craving more. The Chargrilled Bone Marrow was a revelation! The marrow was tender and succulent, beautifully complemented by the tantalizing blend of spices. The Shrimp Vennai Roast was a burst of flavors in your mouth, and the 90-day marinated pickle was a thrilling accompaniment to the meal, showcasing the restaurant's commitment to preserving traditional tastes. The highlight of our dining experience was undoubtedly the Masala Dosa. Perfectly crispy on the outside, with a delectable potato filling and an array of chutneys, it was a symphony of tastes that transported us back to the streets of South India. Our culinary journey was thoughtfully rounded off with the signature South Indian Filter Coffee. Its robust flavor and aromatic richness were the perfect ending to an unforgettable meal. But our exceptional experience did not end with the food; the service at Copra was top-notch. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the cuisine they served. They made sure every aspect of the dining experience was seamless and enjoyable. Overall, Copra is a true gem in San Francisco's culinary scene. The outstanding decor, the incredible food, and the impeccable service combined to create an extraordinary dining experience. Chef Sri's culinary mastery shines through in every dish, and the restaurant's dedication to preserving South Indian flavors is truly commendable. Whether you are a die-hard food enthusiast or just looking to savor a remarkable meal, Copra is a must-visit destination. We can't wait to return and relive this culinary adventure all over again!
What's the Fuss About? Extremely Disappointing.
Very mixed experience: 1. Decor - beautiful. They did a great job of making the old Dosa space look elegant and friendly. 2. Menu - might as well be in a foreign language. We had no idea what the names of the dishes meant nor did we recognize most of the ingredients and we've been dining out for 40+ years including at high-end and Indian restaurants. 3. Service - friendly people, but at no time did they make any effort to ask if we had any questions about the menu or explain it to us. Given the menu is incomprehensible, that seems like a fundamental flaw. 4. Food - mostly good, but again no effort by the staff to explain what the dishes or components were when they came. The duck legs were great, but were we supposed to dump the whole dish in to the appam, or tear pieces of that and dip that in the sauce? 5. Wine - Terrible!!! We looked at the wine by the bottle list and thought, "do they know we're in California?" I think they had 2-3 California wines on the list, none of them very recognizable. We opted to go with wine by the glass. Thank goodness they offer tastings before the full pour. My father-in-law almost spat out the Canary Island white. I couldn't recognize the Chenin Blanc as being that grape. The German Riesling was acceptable. The suggested Italian red was horrible. We settled on a French Syrah that was passable. Two out of five isn't a very good batting average. 6. Vibe - buzzy Millennials and Gen-Zers. Throbbing bass in the background music. People who looked like they thought they’d hit the jackpot just being able to get a reservation. For the amount of money this restaurant costs, it's definitely not someplace we'll ever go back to.
Chef Srijith Gopinathan does it again!
Copra is it. I'm blessed to follow Srijith Gopinathan throughout his career. From Campton Place to Ettan. I recently celebrated my mother's 75th birthday, and I am so grateful to be able to enjoy Copra this past weekend; it was heaven on earth. The food, service, and ambiance were marvelous. The dishes blend reinterpretations of South Indian fare with a modern and novel touch. Dishes are prepared with care and attention to detail, perfecting dishes you've had all your life. Do yourself a favor and get a reservation now; the line will be long! Thank you so much, Copra staff and crew; bravo, well done, my stomach thanks you.

Pretty crazy, but cracking down will cost them a lot to maintain. They probably will lose the fight.
