Happy to have finally tried Donaji.
We made a reservation and by the time we left the place was busy. Service was fairly timely and the restaurant was cute. We tried the enchiladas, fish taco, birria taco, beans, donut, and cocktails. All the food was delicious and fresh. Mole tasted great with the enchiladas and chicken was juicy and tortillas were homemade. The donut came out piping hot and wasn't too sweet. Tacos were also tasty. Fish was lightly breaded and not greasy and birria was rich with flavor. The cocktails weren't my favorite and didn't taste well balanced with alcohol or flavors/ingredients. I'd try something else to drink next time but overall I'm happy to have checked this place out.

I came here for posole, and it did not disappoint, although it was made with chicken it was very flavorful! I noticed some min items that I would love to come back to taste. I'll definitely be a repeat customer
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food at a fair price.
Best birria tacos I've ever had. Sopes are great as well.
Be the first to ReplyI love Mexican food and have had excellent Oaxachan in LA
I love Mexican food and have had excellent Oaxachan in LA several times. I was excited to visit as had heard great things about Donaji and liked it's humble roots. We visited on a rainy Thursday after making a reservation on Resy. I had read that you ordered at the counter but was happy be seated quickly and order off menus. The interior is bright with twinkle lights, but narrow with tables close together. We started with the ceviche, which was served in a big bowl with homemade chips. It had just the right amount of lime, avocado and blood orange. The margarita with agave and soda complimented it nicely. You can't go wrong with the enchiladas de mole, with two served with a spicy mole and side of rice. The chicken tinga was tender with a crema topping and queso fresco sprinkled on top. Husband had the pozole rojo (soup) which was flavorful but chicken a little tough. Served with spices on little spoons and chips. The best dish of the night were the churros with a side of chocolate dipping sauce. Served like a donut and piping hot, they were light and delicious (but took about 10 minutes to make). Overall, we enjoyed the meals. Service was a bit slow, we had to flag waiters down to refill glasses and clear tables. I understand it's a family run restaurant so give them a break. I really liked the food and would return.

This is my second time coming here, and it did not disappoint. I can't remember exactly what I got last April, but I went during SF Restaurant week when they had their $35 4-course meal, which was delicious. One of the courses had beef, which they very nicely replaced with chicken to accommodate me (I don't eat beef). The second time around (11 months later), my group got:Oaxaca TotoposFarmers Market TacosSopesEnchiladas de MoleNone of these disappointed me, I highly recommend the Enchiladas de Mole though. That was probably my favorite dish.
Be the first to ReplyDrinks and food were so good.
I recommend getting the tlayuda here and any mixed drink with tequila or mezcal. All staff were super friendly too. I will be returning soon!

Donaji is FANTASTIC! The service is very nice and the food is DELICIOUS! I HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone who wants authentic Mexican cuisine in a casual setting.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is excellent.
The flavors really pop, and the dishes were both traditional and interesting. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, and great people.
The ceviche, totopos and mushroom memelita were amazing. The place has a great vibe and I cant wait for them to get their liquor license.
Be the first to ReplyI had had this place on my list for a long time and finally
I had had this place on my list for a long time and finally got a chance to check it out during a weekday when I was hoping the line wouldn't be too long. I have to say- it was worth the hype!! I went with 3 friends who were all greatly impressed! It's the most compliments I've gotten on a restaurant choice in SF in a very long time. The food was flavorful and filling yet not heavy at all. The mole was perfection, and the there was a flavor profile unlike any other mexican food you'll have in the city. Make sure to order the churro donut at the end too! It won't dissapointNote- it gets a 4/5 because the service was average to below average. The food is good enough though, that I will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyMy first time trying Oaxacan cuisine and I was blown away
My first time trying Oaxacan cuisine and I was blown away by the balance and depth of the flavors. Came with a group of 6 and we ordered family style to taste a bit of everything! -Ceviche - beautifully presented and wrapped in a fried plantain, fish was fresh-Enchiladas with mole, delicious and hearty chicken , mole had a lot of depth-Tacos, we got every single one on the menu. Standouts were the crispy fish and farmers for me. Other favorites in our group were the fried chicken and birria -Posole rojo, so underrated, I personally found the subtlety to be so comforting, it was not salty and oily like other places Friendly family owned restaurant and despite every seat being filled, were attentive, personable, and made a connection with our group. I'll be back!
Be the first to ReplyThere was quite a line on a Friday night and I now know why.
Food was delicious and presentation was top notch! We ordered quite a bit between the two of us - sopes, chicken tamale, birria tacos, pescado and the farmers market veggie taco and managed to eat it all. The birria taco didn't come with the traditional dipping sauce like we had expected but per my husband, the meat was seasoned well and was flavorful, that was his favorite. Mine was the fried fish taco which tasted so fresh. It came topped with aioli and I was hoping for a few more salsa options on the side which would have paired really well with the tacos. The sopes were quite tiny for the price but worth a try. My only other complaint was the wait time, we waited close to 40 mins for food to arrive and got pretty hungry but also realize they were busy. Will return to try other menu items.
Be the first to ReplyA great addition to the neighborhood.
I had the ceviche and the totopos and loved them both. The staff was friendly, helpful, and accommodating. I'll definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyI've eaten here a few times and have always found the food
I've eaten here a few times and have always found the food to be really good. Mostly I've done take out due to corona. I decided to have dinner there last and was highly disappointed! I had the green pozole which was barely warm. The food took a while to get to us. We also ordered dessert which was taking so long we ended up just canceling. I looked towards the kitchen and could see there was only one lady cooking by herself and seemed to be having a hard time with the orders. It was a Friday night and there were more people than usual, but they just seemed to be overwhelmed and under staffed. I also noticed the to ho portions were bigger than when we ate at the restaurant. I hope they get it together because I really like their food.
Be the first to ReplyA hidden gem.
Came here for early dinner at 5pm on a Friday and the restaurant was pretty empty. We ordered at the counter and each dish that was brought out wowed us with the beautiful presentation. Like I mean, just look at the mole on those enchiladas! We had the green pozole and it came with spices on wooden Oaxacan spoons. It was the first time we had tlayuda and we loved it. Overall, really great dining experience and hope to be back again
Be the first to ReplyI really wanted to love this place because of all the good
I really wanted to love this place because of all the good reviews, and wanted to try something new. Unfortunately, it did just not meet expectations that the reviews had set. The sopes were small palm sized, and not worth the price. Some of the reviews had said it was a flavor bomb, but we thought it was bland. The 2 person shareable dish was also bland. Everything needed to be drowned in their chili oil.Even though their food wasn't as good as I thought, their chili oil was a yummy addition. Their tortilla chips on the side of the pozole was pretty crispy and fresh. I can tell their ingredients are high quality and well cooked, but unfortunately it just needed more seasoning, which is just as if not more important. The ambiance is great and the waiters were timely and nice. I would get the Mexican hot chocolate again. It's the Mission with lots of good Mexican food around, so it's difficult to compete. I'm rooting for this place since there were also positive aspects about our dinner, but it needs to step up the seasoning and flavor.
Be the first to ReplyUnassuming small restaurant front in the Mission district
Unassuming small restaurant front in the Mission district of SF. We ordered a Jamaica and we're pleased to taste that it was fresh and made from scratch (not overly sweet). The Oaxacan hot chocolate was much sweeter than I'm used to, but still had a pleasant taste. The tamale with chicken tinga and a side of mole negra on top was tasty and hit the spot, though not outstanding. The chicken pozole rojo was good but lacked body. Although my daughter was craving it and she was satisfied. The star was the staff, they were all very helpful and the service was swift. We will have to try them out again and order the tlayuda! Tip, you pick up a menu and order at the front desk when you're ready.

Man this food was awful! The mole was not cooked to be sweet at all taste more bitter. Will never order here again! Wasn't worth the grubhub of $50 along with the guacamole and the tamale! Y'all be lying about these restaurants! So disappointed and I'm pregnant! Not happy asking for my refund from grubhub!
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely check this place out! If you're in the Mission
Definitely check this place out! If you're in the Mission (or not) make the journey to patronize this restaurant. Everything was quite good however, I'm only making this review to let you know about the mole enchiladas! Also, I believe one of the owners is pregnant and she was working like every front house job while being hella pregnant! Host, bar tender, taking orders, bussing tables & everything on a busy Friday night yall. Shout out to you, mama! You go girl!Okay so onto the mole enchiladas. . From the first taste of the mole sauce it was like a beautiful symphony of flavors on my tastebuds. Very rich and had an overall well rounded/balanced flavor of sweet and savory. I love mole but not everyone makes it quite right. Their mole had such a depth of flavor that isn't seen in most mole sauces, at least something that I've ever tasted. It tasted like something an abuelita would make. I had the vegan option (papas y soyrizo) but I'm sure the chicken option tastes like chicken. The rice portion was decent and had a pleasant, mild taste that balanced the complexity of the mole sauce. I will come back just to order this dish.We also ordered the tyulada (think super loaded xl tostada) it was pretty good. Excellent for sharing. Maybe would order again (I'm kinda cheap btw, if price isn't an issue for you, go for it). The sopes are not worth it imo. (Again, if money isn't an issue you should at least try it) Wonderful flavor but the serving size isn't worth the price. Maybe if they gave you three at that price or one medium/larger sized sope. The birria was smack, try it. The Chinese chile oil looking thing on the table is called salsa macha. Def put on everything you're eating (even the mole if you're into that but again, so good on its own)With that being said, I'm excited to try more of their food and support them :) if you're reading this, check out this amazing, no frills restaurant in the mission!
Be the first to ReplyYum! Tried this spot on a Sunday at around 1pm.
No lines, but steady trickle of people and basically a full house the entire time.My husband and I shared the enchilada mole bc that's the most popular and a chilaquiles, and they did not disappoint. We were worried the portions looked small, but we were plenty full with the two dishes. If you have a large appetite, might need to order another snack dish. It's def not a have leftovers type of place, but quality over quantity! I definitely want to try the sopes next time (we chose to try the chilaquiles this time instead). Also - how come no one mentioned in the chili sauce on the table!!! Such. Good. Flavor. Such smokiness and depth of flavor, and not really spicy. I ate a spoonful with the rice.
Be the first to ReplySuch a bright, cute, festive place to sample some amazing
Such a bright, cute, festive place to sample some amazing Oaxacan food! I tried the pork tamal, the sopes, and the enchiladas de mole. The pork tamal was so tender and delicious, and the masa was seasoned beautifully. The sopes were probably my favorite of the three, piled so high with braised meat and beans and pickled onions and crema that it was hard to fit in my mouth. The enchiladas had the most flavorful, sweet, spicy, creamy mole sauce and was definitely extremely unique. My boyfriend thought it was good but a little too sweet, but I thought it was nice and well balanced. All three were amazing dishes that I would love to have again. I'm excited that this spot has opened near me so I can try more Oaxacan style dishes!
Be the first to ReplyDonaji, where have you been all my life? There are lots of
Donaji, where have you been all my life? There are lots of good Mexican restaurants in the Mission, but Donaji just hits the spot in a different way. I ordered a lot of things and can say that practically everything was good. The sope (basically a taco on top of fried masa) with the steak, guacamole, and hints of citrus on top of the fried and not too heavy masa was one of the best things I have eaten all year. The chicken tamales were also super flavorful. For seafood dishes, the fish taco was perfectly cooked and the ceviche had the right amount of acid and heat. They also serve beer and sangria so I treated myself to a red and white sangria in these cute cups. The service and overall ambiance of this place is so welcoming. I'm surprised this place has not been packed the last few times I have been here. Guess this might be a hidden gem for now, but hopefully they get the recognition they deserve.
Be the first to ReplyWe really enjoyed our dinner.
We had Chicken mole and chicken pozole with agua Fresca and a jalapeรฑos wine spritzer cocktail. The food was flavorful and you can tell the proprietors really care about making quality food. So glad we found this place.
Be the first to ReplyThe food here is the best I've tasted from a Mexican
The food here is the best I've tasted from a Mexican cuisine restaurant in San Francisco. Specifically , this is Oaxacan cuisine. Oaxaca is commonly known as the birthplace of Mole and one of the best place to have mole from. Donaji keeps the tradition alive by delivering on the promise of tasty Oaxacan mole. ย Full disclosure, I discovered this place when they focused on and specialized in tamales under the name Tamalitos. They were a fixture of the Outer Sunset farmers market and we have consumed quite a few of their delectable portable delights. ย After a few month hiatus from the farmers market scene, we went back for tamales and sadly, my favorite kiosk was nowhere to be found. Enter Google search! We found that they are now a restaurant in the mission called Donaji and had breakfast and brunch along with the usual choices for lunch and dinner. The family and I readied ourselves because our faith in their tamales was strong enough to ย have faith in the restaurant food too. ย We were not disappointed at all!! I had the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce , a quesabirrilla and a coke. My wife had 2 delicious sopes, red chicken pozole and hot Oaxacan chocolate milk. Layla (our kiddo) had a chicken tamale, quesabirrilla and hot Oaxacan chocolate milk too. Everything was so delicious and flavorful that I didn't even reach for any kind of condiments or salsa.
Be the first to ReplyThis place deserves all the stars.
Good cocktail specials for HH. Came for restaurant week and got to try a variety of things, all were super tasty, the sope pozole mole and churro donut. Especially the churro donut!! 10/10 They make it fresh and it's so chewy and the texture is melt in your mouth. Interior is decorated with plants and artwork, makes a good date spot. Very reasonable prices for the quality of food.
