Wonderful stay
We have today returned from a wonderful few days at the Driftwood hotel. The staff are amazing and can’t do enough to help you. Stuart on reception was so helpful and obliging and always seems to be on duty. The breakfast staff are also very friendly and efficient and the breakfast itself was one of the best breakfasts we have had in a very long time. We were in room 2 which had the most spectacular views from three large picture windows. Stunning! The hotel is situated just above the beach and even though it was chilly we took a walk down there. We were visiting friends in the area who had just opened an amazing art gallery in St Mawes and we will definitely be coming back to the Dritftwood soon. A memorable visit to a beautiful part of the country.

My husband and I have just come back from two nights winder get away to The Driftwood Hotel . The location of the hotel is spectacular even in winter as it outlooks gardens, beach and the massive expansive sea ! The hotel is very comfortable and homely . The staff are kind , friendly and professional and take pride in their jobs. We had room 2 in the main house which had 3 windows to enjoy the views . The chef produced delicious breakfasts & dinners for us ( we ate in both nights which was perfect after a day out walking and exploring the local towns . We would highly recommend and hope to return to enjoy The Hotel in the sunshine too .

I went with my friend for afternoon tea. It was absolutely amazing! The hotel has such a cozy, relaxing, peaceful ambiance. The owners are really good with the interior design. The views are stunning, the food was great and the whole team really friendly. The journey was definitely worth it. We will be back 😊

Stayed here for two nights as we ticked off walking the South West Coastal Path from St Anthony to Portloe. Perfect location with views to match. The dinner was spectacular and breakfast wide ranging and delicious. The service was impeccable and so friendly. Will be back.

We will absolutely be coming back to this hotel. Staff, service, views and food were all perfect, thank you! We had a really excellent dinner, the wine list was interesting and very well done. Breakfast plentiful and very good. We were sorry to be only staying one night - would recommend for a couple of days to thoroughly unwind or for a special treat.

Gorgeous hotel. Beautiful location. Friendly, helpful staff. Really lovely restaurant with amazing ambience and beautiful views. Expensive though and the menu doesn’t change if you’re there for a week. Bathroom small. Bed very comfortable. GREAT!!!

This hotel is a rare find. From the welcome showed too my wife and myself from the staff, to the magnificent room with a view. This was the perfect addition to our tour around Cornwall and Devon. The Driftwood may be best described as an adult hotel because I think it can only be appreciated by those persons requiring calmness and tranquillity along with excellent food and wine. If we ever have the opportunity to stay here again, we would certainly make the effort.

We stayed at The Driftwood 6 years ago & had a lovely experience. We recently visited for dinner whilst on holiday, although the hotel & restaurant was as lovely as we remembered it, we left slightly disappointed with the dining experience. Front of house were welcoming & friendly but I don't like to see staff looking at their phones in a small intimate restaurant. The food we felt was average & the portion sizes were more akin to a tasting menu as opposed to the 3 course menu The Driftwood offers which we felt wasn't good value for money. The menu was also limited on choice which in itself isn't a problem but unfortunately the dishes on offer were very uninspiring. This experience won't stop us visiting again & just hope that the food lives up to the wonderful hotel that The Driftwood it is.

Our second visit in two years and hopefully won't be the last. Amazingly beautiful hotel set in the most idyllic setting imaginable. Breakfast that are just fabulous and extremely comfortable rooms all go to make this the a wonderful place just to chill and totally relax. It's not the place if you are looking for a fast pace and night life but if you want superb quality in a peace of paradise you won't go wrong. However what makes this hotel so very special are the wonderful staff from the top down who truly just go out of their way to be as helpful and lovely as you could ever possibly wish for.

We have been visiting The Drifwood for many years now and were delighted to find that yet again standards have been maintained. We were particularly impressed with the professionalism of the staff who went about their duties unobtrusively but with friendliness and politeness. Some of the noteworthy dishes we tried were a lobster starter, a troncon of turbot to share, a deliciously tender lamb dish and a clotted cream ice desert with meringue shards and strawberries in a strawberry and elderflower coulis. Being able to enjoy meals on the terrace was an added bonus as the weather was so pleasant.

I wanted to like this hotel but found what I liked was the location more than the hotel itself. I did not eat here (which seemed to disappoint them!) and so my review is only based on the room and general ambience. Firstly, the rooms in summer are stuffy because the "picture" windows do not allow any air in, only the tiny fanlights above actually open, there is no air con in the rooms at all. Secondly, as some other travellers have noted the rooms are tired, stains on the ceiling, a toilet handle that felt like it might fall off at any moment and chipped paint on the windowsills. Thirdly, I could hear the extraction units working until 11pm at night, the persistent drone of which was irritating when reading or trying to sleep. Anywhere else all of this might be acceptable but guests are paying over the odds for this hotel. Strangely, there are no tea/coffee trays in the rooms. These have to be "requested" (and then are removed presumably) or you can have one delivered before breakfast if you choose. This annoyed me personally as I don't want to be forced to commune with my fellow travellers (nice as they were) in the lounge for afternoon tea, nor do I want to be woken at 7:55 with a tray which is subsequently removed. The check out process was delayed as the person who had the appropriate permissions to do so wasn't on site. I wanted to leave early due to a long journey so wasn't hugely impressed but equally, and to be fair, I should probably have mentioned it the night before. Something Driftwood is keen to mention is the beach access. It could be a lovely beach but when I was there it was smelly with decaying seaweed, bits of net, the ubiquitous plastic (sadly) and small dead marine animals washed up with the tide. Much could be done to clean it up and I certainly would not advise anyone to swim from here based on my own experiences. All in all, if this hotel was in the centre of Plymouth or Truro it would simply be average. It is the location and proximity to the coast path that gives it it's kudos.
Be the first to ReplySuperb lunch in an idyllic setting.
My husband and I had lunch here with friends, to celebrate my birthday. Everything was perfect - the food, the atmosphere and decor, and the lovely waitress. The 180degree view along the coast is outstanding. Afterwards we went down to the beach for a walk - idyllic.
Be the first to ReplySpecial hotel, beautiful location
We had three restoring nights here with our two girls during the February half term. I had discovered it through Mr & Mrs Smith, which stated that the hotel was family friendly - as it happened we were the only guests with young children for most of our stay but were made to feel so welcome. Room 7 is ideal for a family of 4, and has stunning sea views. The hotel is comfortable, stylish, welcoming, and the food and wine list excellent. Service is five star with plenty of special touches. Best scones I've ever eaten! Gorgeous decor. A special hotel that I hope to return to.
Be the first to ReplyAn absolutely brilliant 4 nights in this boutique hotal
Driftwood has the most magnificent position on the cliff top with views to die for. The room, a family room with 2 bedrooms was perfect, the staff were friendly without being obtrusive and the food was excellent. Having previously stayed at The Nare further back along the bay I can honestly say that the views are better and the ambience a little less stuffy!!
Be the first to ReplyA lovely hotel - wonderful food and views
Another great stay at this calm and peaceful hotel. As you can see it is set directly above a cove with gardens down to the pathway to the beach. The bedrooms are fairly standard but decorated in light colours and feel fresh and bright. Some are larger than others and some have better views. A few have an outside terrace. Bathrooms are adequate with a shower over the bathtub. The food is excellent and breakfasts are perfect. The staff are professional but also friendly and cheerful. Easy to get a taxi to St Mawes and a gentle daytime walk to Portscatho.

We stayed at the Driftwood for 5 nights at the end of June and once again enjoyed a fantastic holiday. We booked one of the superior sea view double rooms on the ground floor (so there is a small outdoor patio area which a couple of sun loungers). The rooms are cosy with just enough room for a single chair in the corner and a TV but the bed is very comfortable. There is also a nice bath / shower. Having said that I do think that the room would benefit from a little TLC in the near future. As has been our experience during all of our stays, the food provided by Aaron McNamara and team was fabulous as was the service. Its a lovely place to stay - it effectively has it's own beach just a few minutes walk down the coastal footpath or you can walk down the road to Porthcurnick beach which is c10mins (you will also find the Hidden Hut located here which is great for lunch). It was great to see Guy who continues to bring a smile to everyone's face in the dining room whether at breakfast or dinner and who provides such wonderful service. We did also dine at Tavola (they have a simple offering being pretty much just pizza with beer/wine but their pizzas are fab) and the Plume of Feathers (wholesome pub grub which was ok) - both are located in Portscatho. A lovely few days holiday and we very much look forward to our next trip in 2023.
Be the first to ReplyCosy small hotel with breathtaking views
After travelling around for three weeks, staying max. 3-4d at one place we traditionelly love to close our holiday with a whole week in one place. This Hotel was a perfect choice, very friendly and caring staff, the view cannot be beaten, and the rooms are decorated with much effort and passion. This summer was very hot, and that is why I missed an air condition although I deeply understand that it is presumably not necessary during average summers…..the children in the standard room hat even more problems to get air into the room because the windows were only to open a little bit compared to our superior room. Wardrobe is small, bathroom too, a minibar would have been wonderful at these temperatures. A very lovely detail is the morning tea/ coffee service at your room- very very nice. Most other guests stay a few nights only to dine I guess- and there is no Restaurant or Bar within a short walk ( Portscatho can be reached by a 30min Walk in the coastal path, beautiful!), and driving takes more time due to small roads. St. Ives is >1hour Drive- if heading north, the ferry is hardly to avoid. Breakfast was extraordinarily good with one exception ( change of Chef?), Avocado on sourdough bread was only cut in rather big pieces ( in contrary to the days before), and just thrown on the bread with the egg, two crumbles of feta next to it- after the three days before I was surprised and disappointed. Next morning it was well prepared again. We had three dinners, the second with ordered lobster really good, every time we had to choose a wine by ourselves due to lack of sommelier skills in service who besides this was always ambitious and caring. We are familiar with michelin starred restaurants, and I think some of the dishes here are close to scratching one star- but in my opinion even at this level there is the need of training service staff about the wine card. We enjoyed our stay very much although one must admit that the price would lead to expect more comfort which in my eyes was acceptable since compensated by a huge amount of warmhearted kindness, cosyness and notable passion. Thank you, dear Team, for a wonderful family week!
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding Boutique Hotel Perfect Stay Disappointing Food
In general, this is a stunning boutique hotel especially the location, this was our second stay after having our honeymoon here in July 2021. We had a wonderful ground floor room with patio and stunning panoramic views, the cleanliness in the room perfect and because it was our wedding anniversary whilst there the half bottle of champagne on arrival in the room was a nice touch. The hotel itself is very clean and tidy with a lovely bar/restaurant with some of the best views you will ever see. On the whole the service was good although on the first morning breakfast was a little chaotic with staff running around like headless chickens, fair play Stuart steadied the ship and apologised for the tardy service and long wait for our food. My main and only criticism I have is echoed by another review on Trip by Surqueen, the food is ok certainly not as good as Ollies (a great loss to the Driftwood) very pricey and no where near enough choice, we stayed for 3 days and it changed just once and that's why we didn't eat with you on the Sunday night. When you are paying £70.00 for 3 courses you expect to see some changes to the menu daily and with the experience of the new chef that should prove very easy for someone of his calibre. Just because food is locally sourced which it should be anyway, doesn't mean you cant make simple changes. What we ate for dinner was very nice indeed but after the second night we didnt want to be eating the same on our third night so I cancelled our dinner reservation. On this basis which is real shame I wouldn't book longer than a two night stay, and it has now put me off booking for the New Year break purely down to the uncertainty of the menus/food. I would like to think over time the food choices will be back to the usual standards that it once used to be, having the tasting menu back would be a good start. This is a fabulous hotel no doubt about that, and certainly well worth a visit, we will return again in the future when hopefully these food issues have been addressed.

We have just spent a wonderful relaxing week here. It’s an amazing spot, we hardly moved from the beach. The gardens are wonderful and the little seating areas are great ( cushions would be nice 😊) Breakfast choices were amazing but sometimes it felt a little chaotic, the odd meal wrong or part ready but the staff worked incredibly hard and were very eager to please. Honestly don’t know why this is a three star hotel it should be higher. Little feedback comments would be about storage and lighting in bathroom. Great week and sunny on top thanks all

This is a delightful hotel in a stunning location. The extensive gardens run down to the sea and the views are breath-taking. The service was outstanding and my husband pronounced breakfast "the best this year!" We stayed for a weekend break in Room 14, which was light and spacious (we could have been provided with a small fridge for our water and milk, but didn't learn about this until leaving). We made a couple of suggestions for the bathroom which lacks storage space - a shelf over the basin and hook on the door would have been appreciated, while the bath really needs a grab rail for its overhead shower as getting out is tricky. The big fluffy white towels were lovely, but the 2 bathrobes were so small that we weren't able to use them. Overall we had a wonderful stay and felt totally looked after. We would be back in a heartbeat.
Be the first to ReplyBest host EVER!!!
This is one of the best lodging experiences I’ve had outside of a 5 star hotel… first of all, photos don’t do Justice! Rooms are themed- The Flamingo room has pink flamingo wallpaper, a cute blue dangly crystal chandelier, a great comfy bed… I’m told there’s also an Egyptian room, as well as oriental and Art Deco, and a couple others- it’ll depend on the # & type(s) of beds required. The building is cute and old, but the updates are definitely fantastic and modern. Location is fabulous- a couple blocks from the sea- you can not only smell it but see it from the patio- which is also great, a couple tables for dining (breakfast, which sadly I slept through! But sounds thorough and delicious!). But the cherry on top is certainly the host, Tracey… I can’t say enough about her to do her right! She’s not only hospitable and friendly as hell, but seems to know all the neighbors, has great advice and fantastic stories… but she’s also so fabulous to talk to and funny as crap. I want to pack her in my suitcase and take her home! She frequently met me outside when I went down to smoke, and where usually I’d want to be left alone, I looked forward to running into her. Even if this place was a dump- which it is not- I’d come back just to see her! She even came up our first am at the end of breakfast to make sure we didn’t want her to whip us anything up! Truly, if all my travels, this is one place I would fight to get a room at when I come back!!!!

A wonderful short holiday here to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary . We arrived exhausted after a long drive and a breakdown on the M5 but were soon revived by a warm welcome and a walk down to the glorious beach below the hotel. A g and t on the terrace while enjoying the amazing views completed the restoration. We ate both nights at the hotel and the food was flavoursome and well presented. The breakfast menu is particularly magnificent but the stars of the show are the staff who are helpful, jolly and professional whether they are bringing plates of food, cleaning and replenishing the rooms or soothing guests who accidentally set off the alarm in the disabled loo. We were extremely lucky with the weather and enjoyed a cliff walk to Portscatho as well as a swim in the sea. many thanks to all who made our trip such a joyous occasion.

The hotel is situated in a beautiful location with stunning views and it’s own beach. Our 2 night stay with family for a special birthday celebration was faultless. The service was friendly and relaxed and the staff couldn’t do more to help. Food was excellent and of note the mackerel and lobster. We were able to have both breakfast and dinner on the terrace on the second day. We had a picnic one day in the garden provided by the hotel in a lovely hamper with tasty sandwiches and treats. Sleeping with the balcony doors open with a fabulous view of the sea and the moon, and sounds of the waves was the icing on the cake, helped of course by the great weather. Thank you!

Driftwood is such an amazing place to stay that for us no trip to Cornwall is complete without spending 3 nights here before going home. As soon as you drive past the meadow lush with wild flowers and buzzing bees and see the blue waters beyond the hotel you just feel such a lovely sense of peace and anticipation. The relaxed decor suits the light and airy rooms and the views from the restaurant are just perfect. Rooms are small but very comfortable and you wakeup to the sound of the waves. The only downside is that water pressure is an issue so showers are disappointing but the beds are really comfortable and everything else is perfect. Staff throughout are friendly and efficient and breakfasts are just superb. Food at Driftwood has always been special with full use of local produce and imaginative tasty combinations but this was our first experience with the new chef. We ate at the restaurant for two nights and I have to say we really enjoyed both meals. Do take a walk down to the beach or just chill out with a good book in the garden, Lovely, lovely stay. Stonking.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Hotel but underwhelming food
We chose this hotel based on past trip advisor reviews and the glorious photos of dishes. Certainly whet our appetite! The hotel is fabulous. Great attention to detail, welcoming staff, perfect rooms and grounds. However, the food did not reflect the previous glowing reviews and photos which we were so looking forward to. It’s obvious that the two previous chefs served outstanding dishes ( verified by another couple we spoke to). I know the new chef has only been there for a short time and needs to make his mark but we were not keen on the limited choice on the menu. 4 starters, two of which were raw fish, risotto and asparagus. The egg custard tart for desert was tasteless(I sent it back)- round tart with cream on top and the next night it looked the same but was salted caramel tart. Hopefully it will be back to the previous standard soon
