Hefty price tag, well worth it. The attention to detail is impressive, and most importantly, the food is incredible.
Had an incredible dinner while on vacation. The sommelier and waitstaff were all extremely attentive and welcoming. The price point is very high, but the food, service, and ambience all live up to it. I got the wine pairing, and my wife got the non-alcoholic pairing. I would highly recommend either pairing. They add a lot to the experience, and if you're already spending the money on the dinner, you might as well go all the way. The music and the wine pairing both made the experience more approachable and playful. The music consisted of instrumental covers of well-known songs. My wife and I ended up playing name-that-tune in between courses. Still, the covers are atmospheric enough that they wouldn't put off those looking for a more serious and formal experience. The wine pairing had two somewhat interactive pairings. The first was a comparison of two different vintages of the same riesling, and the second was a 'guess that wine' sort of thing. Aside from being entertaining, it was a nice reminder to really pay attention to the flavours in each course and each glass. It was also presented by the sommelier in a manner that would be suitable for a variety of guests, from serious wine aficionados to complete beginners.
Be the first to ReplyThe set menu included something I usually do not enjoy, but this place made it taste good
On the day we came here, the set menu included squab. I do not enjoy squab, but this place made it taste good, which was impressive. The set menu includes a lot of different things. Its a good way to try many things. I liked some of the things and didn't like some of the things. Was it worth it for me? YES. The service here was really good.
Be the first to ReplyBe aware of inflated taxes, fellow customers!
Beware of inflated taxes, fellow customers! We were surprised to see on the bill that taxes were charged not just on food and beverages, but also on gratuity and on the SF mandate fee. Since we had never seen this in other places (including quite many high-end restaurants), we thought it was probably a one-off mistake so we asked the waiter if he could double check. We didn't think it was a big deal, and were taken aback by how defensive the waiter suddenly became -- instead of checking on the numbers, the waiter insisted everything was done the way it was supposed to be and he "didn't manipulate anything." What made us even more uncomfortable was that he suddenly raised his voice while talking about these, which is so different from his earlier communications during the night, as if he was trying to make us feel embarrassed and give in. We had no idea where the defensive behavior came from -- we didn't think or suggest it was his mistake; we just thought it was a one-off accounting error that was worth checking. He made us feel that we had to explain ourselves in order for our simple request to be taken seriously, and after that, it took multiple rounds of communications with the waiter and the boss, about half an hour of waiting, and kind help from other customers (who identified the same issue), for this simple mistake to be corrected. We almost gave up because it wasn't worth the hassle, but decided not to because we felt this sort of mistake (intentional or not) should be put to an end. If you consider going to this place, please beware of this and pay close attention to the bill. This is the main reason why I am giving it one star -- when you pay $700 to celebrate a special occasion with a loved one, the least you would expect is that you are taken seriously if anything goes wrong. But we were hugely disappointed that it wasn't the case. Otherwise, I would give it three and a half based on the following factors. Food was overall good but not great for the price range -- 6 out of the 9 courses were fine and the other three were mediocre at best (e.g. the chashu beef, and the xiaolongbao). The drinks were also mediocre. Ambience was good. Service was good until we pointed out the inflated tax issue, but was a bit slow -- we ended up spending ~3.5 hours on the dinner and ~0.5 hour trying to resolve the issue.
Be the first to ReplySpectacular and worth the second mortgage
there are actually nine tables if one includes the chef's table in the kitchen. Dinner for two was well over $500 without wine but with a generous and well deserved tip.
Each dish is carefully crafted with a view to a complete fusion of taste, texture and visual delight. The chef's table makes for a wonderful view of the well orchestrated kitchen.
I wish I were still drinking great wines because the wine list is extensive and interesting.
This is not the place for restraint or deferred gratification.
Unique and deeply personal dining experience
A unique and deeply personal dining experience. Entering a nondescript alley, ascending an unreliable elevator....then entering a serene setting for exquisite food. Service was over the top terrific - the extra touches you hope for (but often donโt get) at this price point. Every dish was memorable. Fabulous wine list and whiskeys (we didnโt do the pairing but the sommelier offered us several complimentary pours as our chosen bottle chilled).

This is a beautiful space with excellent service but it does not live up to its reputation. The initial presentation of 9 small plates is stunning but flavorless as was our experience throughout the entire meal. Additionally, even though there was a service charge on the bill they informed us it was not for the servers but the back of house personnel. I had communicated Chef Chen on Yelp about i he said it was not policy and would look into it but that's the last I heard. I can see how the whole experience justifies the pricing but just did not enjoy the food which is the real reason to go. San Francisco has plenty of high end restaurants and if willing to spend upwards of $600 per person choose elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyExquisite, delicately and thoughfully prepared cuisine with impeccable service
Be ready to thoroughly enjoy the delightful, delicious, beautiful and creative food provided this establishment. Open your palate with the first dish of sweet, savory, bitter, salty to prep yourself for the wonders to come in the prix fix. The decor is minimalist yet warm with large round comfy booths that afford privacy in addition to good acoustics. The professional wait staff is friendly without being invasive to the dining experience. This is a special occasion, memorable dining experience. Not for the faint of wallet- dinner for two including wine pairing (tax, insurance, gratuity) about $900.

Dining at Eight Tables by George Chen is definitely one of the most memorable experience we had. We read about George Chen accolades from various magazines, notably the Luxury Magazine and decided to celebrate our 18 years anniversary. We flew from Los Angeles just for this special dinner and was well worth it. A 12 course dinner, inclusive of 2 specials for the night and picked the tea tasting menu as well. The food was simply divine and the service was above and beyond any fine dining restaurant can offer. Mr. & Mrs. Chen were so hospitable and the staff were friendly and unpretentious. The ambience was pleasantly cozy. They called this dining style Si Fang Cai or "Private Chateau Cuisine" and they lived up to it. Though it was difficult to choose the favorite course out of 12, we like to pick Jiu Gong Ge (Nine Essential Flavors of Chinese Cuisine) and Four Happiness Caviar Dumpling as the highlights of the evening as seen in the photos
Be the first to ReplyExquisite and Imperial
Absolutely an indulgent experience in fine Asian dining. You will feel as if you are dining as an Emperor or an Empress by the skill and attentiveness of the servers. The Chef de Cuisine and his staff prepared a variety of flavors. Each course was a dish of culinary art The ambiance is exceptionally intimate, yet celebratory.

We had a special event to celebrate and saw a fantastic review on kqed check please. The other reviews on trip advisor are very well written give a great summary on finding this place, its wonderful ambience and exceptional staff.
The staff were kind and approachable and not arrogant or snobby as at some top restaurants.
My wife was over the moon and felt it was better than Quince. Surely it should be one or two star michelin. It was a 10 course meal over 3 hours, starting with a 9 piece amuse bouche of salty, hot, sweet, tangy bits
I had some reservations on the quality given the price. My one complaint is that some of the dishes were colder and did not seem as freshly made as i expected. Seems they had been prepared way before and served to us. The Chef was not in house and i heard that the level and quality drops a bit when he was not around. I suspect this may have been true. In fact one dish was served by what looked like the dish washer, whose clothes were highly soiled. This should not occur at a restaurant of this level
Bottom line unique selection of one of a kind and high quality Chinese food
One of the finest meals I have ever experienced
And I do mean "experience" because not only is the food an absolute delight, the ambiance, service, attention to detail, presentation and wine pairings are executed perfectly!
I have been to quite a few Michelin star restaurants, one, two and three star, how they bypassed eight tables is a mystery to me. Is it worth a special trip just to go to Eight Tables? No question, yes it is
I would say the only hiccup we had was actually getting in. You have to be brought in or buzzed in at a gate which can be tricky depending if the security guard is there. Once inside, it is a delight. Ordering a cocktail is a whole presentation unto itself! The courses are thoughtfully presented, delicious and unique. The staff is gracious and attentive without being overbearing. George Chen actually served a few of the courses himself when we were there. Overall it truly was one of the best dining experiences we have ever had
Ultimate dining experience
We never had Chinese cuisine prepared at this high level and with so much detail to service. However, Eight Tables was difficult to find (by Taxi), especially on the cold rainy night we dined. It is on the corner of Columbus and Vallejo Streets. Look for Cole's Hardware on Vallejo; to the left are gates to 8 Kenneth Rexroth Pl with discrete signage. The guard summoned a valet who escorted us to secured elevators taking us to the second floor restaurant. We were treated like royalty the moment we entered by GM Andrew Fuentes. Chef George Chen graciously made his rounds at individual tables. The beautiful decor, the attentive service and deliciously prepared food made it a very memorable evening
Be the first to ReplyDelightful experience
We almost thought we were going to a speakeasy with the key admittance to the alleyway leading to the restaurant. Lovely ambiance and private quiet dining. But the star of the evening was the food. Starting with tiny bites representing specific tastes began our 3 hour experience. Terrific wine parings with one of us trying a variety of sakes. Two additional courses were offered in addition to the many amazing tastes we experienced. A marvelous and delicious experience.
