Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I have never been to a Michelin star restaurant
My wife and I have never been to a Michelin star restaurant and now that we live in Chicago, we had plenty of options. For our second baby moon we decided to treat ourselves to an experience at El Ideas. The whole experience was amazing! The location is really unassuming and not in some pretentious building or area. It was such a laid back yet exquisite experience. Guests were allowed to wonder the space and take in the food preparation. You could ask questions of the chefs. It was really neat and nothing like I've ever experienced. Since there are a limited number of reservations the entire staff is really attune to guests needs. I have no complaints about any of the dishes. Some of the standout dishes were the shrimp dish which was an ode to the history of Chicago fried shrimp. The Swedish style meatball cooked in smoked beef tallow with gnocchi was so well balanced. The smoked duck bahn mi and smoke duck pho was amazing . The Lamb dish was out of this world! I'm still in awe of the vanilla shake and fries dessert. It was truly a work of art. The vanilla with the crunchy potato bits and potato and leak soup just worked. I could take one of those every day. This experience is definitely worth it! I hope to be back in the future!

Amazing! We went for Valentine's Day and everything was stellar. Front of the house and the chefs were warm and welcoming and the food was unique but accessible and delicious from start to finish!

My third visit actually, and oh what an incredible train ride of flavors, taste and atmospheric greatness. Chef Philip is a powerhouse creative and makes this culinary experience at El Ideas, a great one. Each course is perfectly timed, delivered hot and fresh from the open kitchen. Along with his team, he delivers what I consider to be...one of the best dining experiences ever! BYOB proved to be the perfect addition to this experience, as it allowed myself and dining guest to bring a piece of us and not what the establishment deals as good wine or champagne. Two thumbs up and five GOLD stars from this diner. A definite must experience.

El Ideas is a culinary gem where every dish is a masterpiece. The incredible food at El Ideas is a symphony of flavors, showcasing the chefs' unparalleled skill and creativity. Chefs Phillip and Alejandro's hospitality adds a personal touch, making the dining experience truly exceptional. A must-visit for those seeking an adventure for your taste buds. Every dish somehow was better than the next. My husband and I cannot rave about the food and welcoming atmosphere they provided to make my birthday extra special. It's one for the books!

El Ideas is BYOB - so come prepared with whatever wine or bubbly you would like to drink. If you happen to forget, you can order something through UberEATS on the way there (that's what I did!). I would strongly recommend using a ride share, as parking is extremely limited. This is a fancy dinner without being formal, which is my favorite. The food is outstanding, the service is personal and dining here is fun. Most of the seats you have a view of kitchen, but at any time they invite you to get up and move around, and observe the kitchen preparing the next course. Service was about 2.5 hours and the pace felt perfect. Highly recommend and will be back on future trips to Chicago!

Such a fun tasting menu experience, with the only downside being able to find the restaurant in the first place! This is the perfect dining experience for a date night or a celebration with a small group. The setting is small and intimate with a few tables set up around the kitchen. The food was absolutely amazing, and the staff was personable and entertaining.
Be the first to ReplyFor the first course, there was no utensils.
Everyone had to go into their plate face first. Fun, experimental, and inviting. Truly an experience

10/10It is a bit of a hole in the wall location, but what the building "glitz" factor lacks in pizazz, the chefs and food more than make up for in flavor and character. My group of 4 made a reservation for the 8 course menu and enjoyed every minute of the experience. As our first Michelin adventure, it did not disappoint! Chef Phillip was fairly modest about his menu/experience being a half step between the more glitzy Michelin experiences out there and what his kitchen put together. Casual dress, bring your own drinks (water is complementary), and a very engaging and welcoming atmosphere. The scallop..... I could swim in that dish. 5 more please! Just wow. The shake and fries also a noteworthy scrumptious course! As for the facilities and general amenities, clean single stall bathrooms. The kitchen is in full view of the dining area separated by a small partition and rounds out a warm and inviting approach to fine dining by giving direct access to see what's going on. If the question is, "should we do it?"The answer is, "unequivocally, yes!"

Loved loved loved this small BYOB gastronomic treasure!!! Each chef presented their creation. Each was unique and personal. It was extremely artful as a composition with each piece connected to the others. Really fun and personal. Great work from great chefs.

It's a pretty small venue but we loved the vibe (12/10 for vibe). You can walk to different areas to explore the area which was very nice. It was BYOB which reduced cost a bit. Service was outstanding, right up there with vibe in terms of excellence - my wife had a low battery on her phone and the server noticed this and placed it on a wireless charger without being asked, we were all very impressed. The only reason for a lower review is the value for the cost of the meal. We thought the food was above average but definitely not worth the cost to us. The dishes were certainly fun and creative but ultimately the flavor needs to be there. For the same cost, there are several other restaurants we would have rather gone to.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite tasting menu restaurant.
Tasty and Creative. gastromolecular dishes. And it's BYOB! The staff are super down to earth and even let you interact with them and the kitchen. I love that the head chef comes out to explain all the foods and incorporates ideas he got from cooking with his daughter. It's kind of like a show. I'm a meat eater and my hubby is not. We struggle with feeling disappointed for tasting menus that do a lesser job on the vegetarian alternatives but EL Ideas made the veggie plates just as appetizing as the meat ones! The one thing to look out for is it's not in a glamorous neighborhood so Ubers in that area might be a bit harder to come by.

I had one of the most memorable meals of my life recently at El Ideas. The courses were original and delicious. The vibe added to the presentation and taste to push the entire experience beyond what was hoped for. Each dish was carefully constructed with ingredients that complimented each other with unbelievable love. Yes, I said love, as that is the feeling I had after each bite. Thank you Chefs Phillip and Rodolfo for sharing your gift with us and thank you Bill for making us feel like family from the moment we entered ...

Definitely doesn't look like anything when you drive up but once you enter you will be transformed into an eclectic trip around the world through your taste buds in every bite. This was one of the most enjoyable culinary experiences, the food was exceptional and the encouraged interaction with the chefs and other guests made it so much fun.

In a little sketchy of an area but it is a really cool concept. I loved that you can talk to the chef and ask questions whenever you want. I thought some of the dishes were only okay but overall cool experience.

We were here for our 7th anniversary and we are so glad that we came to EL ideas for our celebration. It was a super delicious and fun dining experience that made our day so memorable. The food was amazing and creative of course but the more important thing was the family/friend vibe that EL ideas was able to create. We got to chat with our neighboring couple (who was also celebrating their 7th anniversary!), the chefs and the manager and felt like we were at a dinner party at a friend's place. We are so grateful for the fabulous evening. Thank you Chefs Foss and Oliveros.P.S. We took the CTA to get here so it sort of fit the EL concept? :)
Be the first to ReplyDinner experience was exceptional- from the quirky interior
Dinner experience was exceptional- from the quirky interior details, fun and warm hospitality to delicious food and stunning presentation. Chef and owner, Phillip Foss, is amazing, and you can really tell he is the master of his trade. Molecular gastronomy tricks added another level and complexity to each of the dishes making it one of a kind experience. This place is personal and welcoming, and BYOB makes it that much greater - so everyone can truly enjoy their meal rounded up with their own preference of accompanied beverages. Highly recommend and will definitely be a returning visitor.
Be the first to ReplyA dining experience unlike anything else I have had before.
An small setting with open access to the chef and the kitchen made the experience much more intimate and meaningful. The courses were varied and absolutely exquisite. They took you around an inspired journey around the world. One of the best meals I have ever had. Highly recommend a visit here. I will definitely be coming again.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely disappointing.
.. made reservations through online portal for my wife's birthday over 2 weeks prior and they told me via email that their website had a "glitch" 2 days prior to our reservation. This place came Highly recommended by our friends but they didn't have the decency to call me that our reservation was cancelled. Made my wife cry and that is unacceptable... terrible customer service and I don't recommend the restaurant. I m sure experience is great, but for those unfortunate people like me - don't bother...
Be the first to ReplyThis was a really fun and delicious dining experience!
This was a really fun and delicious dining experience! Everyone has the same seating time and each course is presented to the dining room at once by the chefs themselves from the open kitchen you're allowed to walk by and watch them work between courses. It's BYOB which is so refreshing and yet they still keep the experience elevated with the very attentive service of their front of the house man. The food was experimental and delicious, with most dishes landing really well and I left with a happy tummy. Reasonably priced ($220 pp with taxes and service charges altogether) for the number of courses offered although I do think the portion sizes could be a tad bigger especially on some of the savory courses! My favorites of the night were the salmon and venison courses, yum!!
Be the first to ReplyEL Ideas markets itself as a BYOB Michelin starred
EL Ideas markets itself as a BYOB Michelin starred restaurant minus the frills, where dinner should feel more like a warm family gathering rather than a distant dinner night out on the town. To this end, they achieved this environment and then some, providing amazing, thoughtful plates while remaining rooted to their ideals. We were seated promptly at a table within a few steps from the kitchen, where everyone from their tables could see, hear, and smell the magic happening. The chef encouraged us at the beginning of dinner to get up and join them in the kitchen (up to a point so that we did not intrude the process), and see them at work up close and personal; no need to hide behind any walls. This would not be the only time the chef spoke to us, as every time a new dish made its way to our table, he introduced it with an anecdote about the genesis of it, to the final creation on the plate. It was a personal touch that is much appreciated, and not seen in many restaurants, including those labeled as fine dining. As for the food, my wife, our friend, and I were giddy and full of excitement the days leading up to dinner, and thankfully, our feelings were not misplaced! Dinner started with a couple of beautifully plated and flavorful dishes with the crab and salmon. The crab was Halloween themed in its colors, and in the flavoring, the papaya and carrot elevated the freshness of the crab, giving the dish texture but keeping it light. The follow up dish, a smoked salmon, built upon the light and fresh aspects of the opener. It was a great dish with the beet and pumpernickel making a good contrast to the salmon. Dinner reached a plateau before ramping up again for the next few dishes. The monkfish was okay for my tastes, the chicken and eggs, visually, was not as appetizing or interesting as other dishes, although the flavor was good, and the foie gras was good as well, but not a standout. Immediately after the foie gras, we ate a small bite that seemed as a palate cleanser in the form of a fancy Twix; flavors are unorthodox, but worked extremely well, providing a sweet and salty one-two punch to the palate that prepared me for what was to come. The last 3 dishes of dinner are easily the best of the dinner as well, the last course ending it all with a resounding bang! The main protein of our dinner was a perfectly cooked lamb surrounded by a supporting cast of flavors that kept transforming every mouthful on my tongue depending on what ended up on my fork. It was an exquisite, ever-changing dish with the date and lamb combo in particular making an angelic duet to my taste buds. Following that up, the second to last meal was an inspiring take on dipping fries in a milkshake, a classic savory and sweet combo, with potatoes and leek soup making the fries, and liquid nitrogen reverse poached ice cream making the milkshake. Sounds like something from a mad scientist, but all elements of the dish worked together well, as it tasted as described, but done with a fascinating and intricate twist. Finally, we got to the gingerbread rooibos, the grand finale and apex of dinner. This was the best dish of the night, as the marriage of citrus and sweet was executed perfectly. The citrus of the candied peach and caramelized pomegranate cut through the sweetness of the rooibos and chocolate in particular, bringing a masterful balance to the entirety of the plate. The problem I had with it was that it marked the end of my meal, and I could not have any more of it.In summary, EL Ideas was worth the price of admission, and provided my wife, our friend, and me a memorable dinner. I highly recommend trying it, as the flavors were on point, the service was even better, and best of all, you can bring your own wine or spirit of choice!
