Goodfood but poor experience
This was an extraordinary experience, not in the best way. All diners had to wait in a lobby and tehn one at a time we were led to our tables. We were in a cavernous room with huge sherry? barrels The feeling was reverantial, reinforced by teh way the way the waiting staff behaved, only serving when in pairs, so that we had to wait for ages for the amuse bouche that the otehrs were served. We felt we had to talk in whispers and a family with children were frequently admonsihed The food on teh other hand was very good. I had cod cheeks, something new. There was little possibility of jiggling around teh menu that meant we eneded up eating some items we would not neccessarily have chosen The amuse bouche was gelled olive oil, 3 different flavours, interesting, but not really worth the long wait Overall interesting food, but made to feel uncomforatble which made teh experience poor

I’ve been at this restaurant at least 4 times before when they used to offer the executive menu for 35€(2018]. So I went back again to find out that they no longer offer it and it’s either a la cart or 135 for the tasting menu. We were under the impression that you either choose the whole tasting menu or choose from the 4 classic dishes, 2 choices for starters and 2 for main, so disappointed! My guest and I ended up eating the same 2 dishes. The food was delicious but I can see how some people might find the slimy texture(kind of raw lobster) unpleasant but I didn’t since all the flavors were so interesting and refreshing. We opted for the 1/2 dishes and the portions were very small, specially the Kokotxas only 3…really! But outstanding! My “beef” is with the ambiance and service! We arrived and there were only 2 other people, we were seated next to them on a huge round table that could fit 6 at least. Our table was at ALL TIMES under the closed watch of FOUR members of the staff, RIGHT ON FRONT OF US, we felt so uncomfortable and awkward during the whole meal. Dishes were explained in the lowest softest voice imaginable( no wonder we didn’t understand that we could in fact order dishes from the tasting menu!) These people need to lighten up! I most definitely will not go back although I loved the food I didn’t enjoy my meal at all.

We were looking forward to the Great tasting menu. Most dishes were tasteless ver blend And little imagination about colors. The amuse tasted great The tender lettuce salad , nothing stood out from taste Red tuna belly , had no specific taste, no salt or pepper Pilgrim scallop , was strange enough too salty but poor presentation to serve it with cauliflower. PILPil was again poorly presented In some kind of gelatine with some green sprinkles maybe it was parsley Hake was Excellent Pigeon was excellent Sirloin dish was great. The desert with basis juice the basrl juice was overpowering the whole desert. Creamy milk desert was delicious. Very disappointed overall.

We are back on the road after a little break and have a tour in San Sebastián to report on, first up eMe Be Garrote. The restaurant is in an old cider house, so has high ceilings and barrels on the wall, it’s a stunning space, but rather austere, at times it felt like eating in a church it was so quiet, the amplitude of the room is just cavernous. Fortunately a spanish birthday party arrived to the table opposite, donut actually felt like people were having a good time. The food? Well, it’s OK, two dishes we could not finish as they were just slimy. Yes, slimy. They are obviously shooting higher up the rankings as our napkins were changed as soon as they touched the floor, certainly felt a little fussy at times. The staff feel like they are in training, nothing against that, but the overbearing nature comes from inexperience. Overall, it’s OK, better choices if you are making a short list.

We were excited to dine here based on reviews and recommendations. It was disappointing to say the least! Staff is stiff w/ black masks and little warmth. No where else in SS do people wear masks. Lighting was too bright and they needed some music. Just because you have a Michelin star doesn’t mean you have to be unfriendly. The cod was almost inedible. But the vegetable starter was excellent. There are better choices in SS for that amount of money.

We ate lunch there and enjoyed every minute. It’s easy to get to by taxi or several bus routes from San Sebastián. (The bus takes credit cards - so easy.) The restaurant service team are finely honed to provide a world-class dining experience and the dishes are incredible balancing acts of flavours, textures and even temperatures. (Who would have thought that bacon ice cream could be so wonderful?) We had the degustation menu with matching wines. I must say the wine pairings were imaginative and all worked superbly. This is certainly fine dining worthy of a Michelin star and your time. Highly recommended.
