Emilio's Ballato New York Reviews from The Last Year
If you want authentic Italian that's more about the food,
If you want authentic Italian that's more about the food, than the hype, this place is it. Every dollar is well spent. You'll always see the owners at the corner table in the entrance. We waited in the rain (no reservations) before the restaurant opened and it was worth it. The bread service with tomato sauce was beyond. The linguine w/ white clam sauce was akin to the one I had in Italy. The tiramusu, though heavy on the cream, was inhaled by all those at the table. Next time I'm in NY, this will be my first stop.
Old school italian restaurant frequented by celebrities.
No reservations and it's difficult to get one of the 10ish tables for dinner but it's not hard to get one for a midweek lunch. Chicken Parm and Spaghetti & Meatballs were both excellent and the free bread with the table was also very good. Keep in mind that while the chicken parm is really good, it's $40 for one piece of chicken and no sides. That said, it's worth a visit.

The hype is real!! We came on a Friday at 4:45pm and there was 1 person ahead of us. We waited until 5pm and then were seated. Everyone was very attentive, kind, and patient with us. We were give complimentary focaccia bread that was delicious and hard not to fill up on. We ordered a bottle of the montepulciano wine which went PERFECTLY with everything we ordered. We ordered the ravioli pasta, the amatriciana, the chicken parmesan, and the Caesar salad. We had a group of three that was plenty for us. We also ordered the cheesecake and the tiramisu to split between us. Everything was absolutely divine. The ravioli was simple but really stood out to me and the chicken parm was definitely the best I've ever had. Caesar salad was good too. The tiramisu was a must order, it was incredible, light yet filling, and so so delicious. Cheesecake was simple and fantastic. Cannot rave enough about the food, the party I came with also still talk about the food even though it's been a month. Ambiance is also very cool! Old school Italian (I think?) and had a lot of interesting pictures on the walls. Can't wait to come back!
Had lunch there with my son this past Friday.
Opened at 12:00, we got there around 12:15 and were the 3rd table. In terms of the vibe , classic joint with a real old-world feel. Somewhat reminiscent (minus the celebrity photos) of another local place that I absolutely loved but unfortunately closed back in 2021 (Volare). Place filled up while we were there (all tables occupied by the time we left ~ 2pm). Food wise - real good. We had two special appetizers (mozzarella carrozza & grilled octopus). For our entrees, I had the shrimp fra diavalo over linguine which was spicy but not too, very delicious and my son had the chicken parm - also delicious. Drinks ... two bottles of sparkling water and a single Negroni. We passed on desserts opting to walk a few blocks and get cookies from Levain. All-in-all ... was a great lunch with greater company. Bill came to $190 + tip ($22 for a small Negroni ... come on but oh well). Overall - glad we went.

Waited over an hour outside (watched multiple groups of people who "knew" someone inside form a separate line and make it in before us). After an hour and a half, we made it inside. The service started off strong but there's only 2 waiters - the host and another waiter servicing the entire front room. With pasta at $40 was expecting a larger portion and more flavor. The Cesar salad ($27) was 6 pieces of romaine lettuce and nothing to write home about. Best part of our meal was the homemade limoncello at the end. Unfortunately, satisfied I experienced it but sadly NOT worth the hype of 1k reviews and wait time. Save yourself some time and $ and check out another NYC Italian favorite.
Wait staff could not have made it more uncomfortable to
Wait staff could not have made it more uncomfortable to spend $1500 for 8 people. Had to be reminded multiple times that we had to spend $185 per person because we were a table of 8 instead of 6. Food was good but atmosphere was terrible
Writing this while sitting inside the restaurant.
We eat out a lot and here's my review: food is ok but definitely NOT great. Absolutely NOT the best chicken parm I've had..far from it. I agree with other reviewers: there's a long line outside but there were also plenty of people who cut the line. It's def not first come, first served. Also, Jimmy Murtagh fans: don't make the mistake I did. Don't believe the hype. I promise you the juice is not worth the squeeze. There are far better place where you'll be treated far far better. Also, beware of fake reviews from people who have only ever written 1-2 reviews. PS- tiramisu was mediocre at best. Subpar, actually.
Loved this place.
Stereotypical NYC Italian restaurant, but great ambience service - and the food was amazing.
Third time attempting & first time actually waiting it out.
Best Italian meal I've ever had. Period. Worth the wait & you never know what a-list celeb you might see.
Great warm ambiance and food is always impeccable.
I love the linguine with clams so much!
Emilio Ballato
I have tried probably 20+ different chicken parms in my short 27 years on this beautiful rock that is floating in an ever expanding universe, but this one really changed my life. We came later on a Wednesday night, and were seated immediately by Emilio himself. He was just posted up outside, he must really love this sh*t ahahahahaa. You walk into a small dining room, and are surrounded by framed pictures of celebrities with Emilio, or a signed picture addressed to him. My mind began to wonder and think he must be at least slightly narcissistic, but concluded a narcissistic person would likely run a restaurant better as they are motivated by extrinsic goals such as money or fame as opposed to intrinsic goals such as healthy relationships or personal growth. Okay, Enough of the armchair psychology Johnny. Fine. This was my favorite Italian food I have had in NYC. But I haven't been to Carbone yet so idk. The bread was elite as it actually had a bit of red sauce on it. Nice touch, Emilio. We opted for calamari, the bolognese, and of course the chicken parm. The bolognese and chicken parm went together like 2005 Reggie Bush and LenDale White. Mf Unstoppable. He can be as narcissistic as he wants, but if Emilio keeps cooking up these god-tier chicken parms I will keep coming back. THANK YOU EMILIO! IG @jnov_ TIktok @jnov__
Nothing like the first time..
Unfortunate that I have to change my 5 star review to a 1-star. Really great experience first time around by the son of the owner, Mario. Second time around, probably the worst dining experience I have ever had. We waited outside for over a half hour for a table (if just about everyone in front of us did not leave it would have been a lot longer). Once we were inside I was told to go to a certain table and some older guy stood in front of me and barked "Can I help you?" before he moved out of the way and allowed us to proceed to our table. We had a waiter that was inattentive and rude. He could care less about us as customers and didn't even check in once aside from bringing the food and the check. I don't mind an unexpected long wait time for a table but not to be systemtically treated like trash with a close relative. Not to mention I was told previously that being seated at 2pm would not be an issue by 'someone' at the restaurant. So careful when using the email on the website because you don't know who are talking to. We really have no reason to return.
Worth the wait
Definitely worth the wait. Arrived at 5 on a Sunday and was seated by 5:45, 6. I was solo and met a Mom/Daughter and another solo- we combined into a 4 top/shared entrees and it will be one of my favorite memorable dining experiences for life.
Not Worth the Wait
TLDR: do not attempt to eat here if you are not a regular diner at the restaurant. We had heard great things about this restaurant and it seems many others had too. When we arrived around 6.30pm the restaurant was full and there were 8 other couples lined up outside. We decided to wait since they do not take reservations, calculating that the most we would probably have to wait would be about an hour. What we didn’t realize at that time was that they have a backdoor process for family, friends and regular diners. So diners would arrive, talk to the servers and then walk around the back of the building and get right in. We waited over 2.5 hours to get in to eat!!! We are not unreasonable and whilst we completely understand that a restaurant wants to take care of their regular and loyal clientele, we had no way to gauge how long we would have to wait and it was so demoralizing to watch a bunch of diners leave, thinking it was going to be our turn to get in soon and then having to continue to endlessly wait, while all the backdoor diners got seated ahead if us. It is a terrible system for the non regular diner and ultimately had we known we would have had to wait that long we would have left. The food itself is delicious, but definitely not worth the overall experience of trying to actually get into the restaurant
Leave it for Taylor Swift
We were waiting outside and some kind of maitre let us know that better to take a table of ten btw the ones we were waiting than stay till midnight…a true lie , many tables were available within 15 minutes…same person that brought us main dishes when we just started our apetizers…food somewhat good but not to die for…..expensive and service to forget…Italy? Italy is far away from ballato
Spaghetti Al Pomodoro - delicious!
Spaghetti al Pomodoro is what I usually like to have when I go to a new restaurant. If the sauce is well flavored then I know that I should return to have other dishes. When I went to Emilio’s Ballato this is what I ate. I also had an appetizer of the broccoli di rape as I like butter vegetables especially when garlic is featured No reservations are taken here but on the weekdays the wait was not long.
Excellent
What a wonderful find! Excellent menu, expertly cooked at a reasonable l e price. Get in line fast as it fills up by 4:50 and always a line after that. Sea bass was expertly cooked, with clams. Foccacia was tasty and wonderfully cooked. Pasta was al dented and meatballs were the highlight. Wonderful evening. Thanks emelio
Not worth it! Owner rude to guests when complimented the overpriced food, not even a smile.
Please please please understand what you are getting into before you go . . . Celebrities go here so it’s a popular hot spot. They don’t take reservations which is fine, we stood in line for 1 1/2 hours before we were seated and the food was worth it. The service was also good. But the OWNER, he’s a curmudgeon (mean old man, makes curmudgeon sound nice)he walked through the restaurant, and as a couple from the UK complimented on how good the food was, (I sat right beside them) he did NOT Thank them, in fact, he ignored them, and made the entire experience not worth it at all. I felt so bad for this couple. They had waited in line for almost 2 hours and didn’t even get a thank you when they praised the meal, not even a smile or nod. It was a very uncomfortable experience overall. The owner engaged in a heated discussion with an elderly man after he asked the man at the door about wait time. Bottom line, food REALLY good, service good and polite, atmosphere tense and stressful.
Funky restaurant with excellent food
This is a very unique restaurant. They do not take reservations. There is a long line in the evening. I had the Pollo al Limone and my wife had the Pesto pasta both were excellent. I would eat here again

Prepaid Reservation Fee

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
