Fonda Lupita is on another level! It's one of those rare gems where you don't mind driving an hour or two just to please your taste buds. I was passing by on my way back home to Chapel Hill and decided to give it a shot. The space is huge and clean too! The food is so good that you may want to arrive early to beat the rush. I ordered the Quesabirria Combo which came with 3 Quesabirrias and rice/bean which came out to be about $12-13. For the quality and quantity, the price point is right on! The best Quesabirria I've had -- I kid you not! The flavor palette was like fireworks in my mouth. Dip it in the side of soup and hot sauce and you got yourself something special. The rice and bean were delicious as well! Rice and beans! How is that even possible? I was so impressed that I went back to order more rice/beans + asada taco + cucumber lime drink. They were all a hit as well. I can't wait to come back here to fulfill my taco cravings! I'm about 40-50 minutes out and will drive to eat here! That good!Overall, A+ customer service with all smiles which I always appreciate. Made the food that much better!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing, authentic Mexican food.
It's August 2022 and I think they just moved into this location so their signage isn't all the way up. They have a banner out front.I got queso with some amazing nice thick chips. I got three tacos. A chicken tinga (chicken shredded), a Picadillo (ground beef) and a noplales (cactus). Nice, soft corn tortillas. Fresh. Lovely seasoning. My friend got Quesabarrilla, which is shredded beef, cheese and grilled in soft corn tortillas. With a dipping sauce that is hard to describe. Like an au jus. So yummy. I also love the murals on the walls. Sweet staff. Highly recommend. My only suggestion is I wish they had better descriptions of their menu items. But perhaps that's coming as they get settled in.

Ate here for an early lunch after reading positive review in Raleigh News and Observer. Physical site was delightful and colorful! The food was unique, obviously homemade and very tasty. I had a shredded beef Gordita with homemade mini tortillas. Excellent! My dining companions had shrimp, steak and chicken tacos. Each was uniquely flavorful. Finally all 3 of us had the pineapple fruit drink which was as so good! Next time I'm in Sanford this will be one of my stops!

I've had this place book marked for months and finally got the chance to stop by. We actually ended up at their old location (i updated it on yelp so hopefully it shows up) but we were happily welcomed by a huge parking lot, friendly staff, an awesome selection of music and amazing food. This place is a vibe, and I am here for it. I have been looking for an authentic mexican place ever since I moved here from California, and I am obsessed. Their food was delicious and had some really good sauce on the side. We didn't get a chance to order a michelada however we tried an iced horchata and it was really good. We'll be back, probably tomorrow.

I got a beef burrito, rice and beans and my husband got a chicken quesadilla with rice and beans. You pay 4.25 extra for a very small bag of chips and a small plastic container about half full of mediocre salsa. There is a charge for each item and that would be fine if it was good or an average portion. When I say a charge they charged us for a lid to go on the plastic bowl to take the beans home. The staff are rude and the tables were dirty but then you do have to bus your own table, order from a counter, make your own drink and pickup your food. The prices are quality restaurant prices and quality is not what we got. The chips were rock hard, greasy and cold. The burrito was mostly rice, it fit the quote of where's the beef. The chicken quesadilla looked like a child's portion and was very dry. 52.00 for this small amount of food that wasn't even good. The people beside us paid 120.00 for tacos for 4 children, one burrito rice, beans and 2 chips and salsa. They were also complaining and said Taco Bell was better. I don't recommend this place and don't understand the positive ratings.

We heard so much about this place we made the drive from Raleigh to check this place out. The birria tacos were decent but I found the portions small. There's no chips and salsa and there isn't a lot of places to sit inside. I didn't feel the overall experience was worth making a 30min drive.

Fonda Lupita combines Mexican street fare with a full-service bar. We left the restaurant disappointed with the food and what passes for customer service. It's all self service here, from ordering at the counter, to picking up your own food, then cleaning your table and throwing away the paper serving containers. None of this stops the restaurant from sticking their hand out for a nice tip. Pro tip: Pay close attention to the menu board when ordering. Despite the prominent header listing the price for gorditas and tacos, read the fine print under the fillings. Six of the 11 fillings have an up-charge of up to $1. My dining companion and I ordered tacos and a tamale. Tacos are definitely on the small side and the fillings are not very generous. The al pastor was very salty but otherwise bland. Unlike many taquerias, the filling had not been cooked to order and was served lukewarm. Likewise, the birria taco was very dry and flavorless - it was the worst of the bunch. The chicharron prensado taco was a few chewy chunks of chicharron served in a red sauce. It wasn't very good, but definitely a step up from the al pastor and the birria. My favorite was the carnitas in salsa verde. It was warm and flavorful. The chicken tamale was a dry, barely warm, flavorless disaster. When we placed our order, we were assured the tamale was house-made and steamed to order. While the tamale was obviously made in house, it was absolutely not steamed to order. It had clearly been sitting around for a while and tossed in a paper serving boat when our order came in. Fonda Lupita has a self-service dispenser for plastic eating utensils located at the counter. When I picked up our food, I noticed that the fork dispenser was taped shut. I mentioned to an employee that we would need a fork to eat the tamale. She had the gall to tell me that we should eat the tamale with a spoon. When I asked if she could check in the back for a fork, she shook her head and told me to use the spoon. This was unacceptable and the worst customer service I've experienced in a while. For a business so eager to solicit tips, Fonda Lupita needs to better train their employees and either keep an ample supply of eating utensils or go to a store to purchase an emergency supply if they run out. One and done.
Be the first to ReplyOf all the authentic Mexican restaurants I have been to
Of all the authentic Mexican restaurants I have been to this one tops them all!As soon as I took my first bite I felt like I was back in Guadalajara Mexico. The most authentic tacos you will find. I ordered tacos of carne asada and pastor. Very yummy! We also ordered a chicken tamale. It was so good. Portions are small but prices are reasonable. 1 taco is about 3-4 inches in diameter. The tamale was also small but perfection. Here, you walk up and order. There is a bar separate for alcoholic beverages. The bartender is very attentive. The margaritas were delicious. I recommend the Kalo (house margarita). This place was clean, the music on point and impeccable service. If we are ever in the area again, we will be back!

Order off a chalkboard. Food delicious but if you don't know what things are you will have to go online for an explanation.
Be the first to ReplyThey have a new location now so I need to try it.
The gordita with stew beef is outta this world. Decent price. Super yummy. Takes a lonnng time for takeout so order ahead. I add cotija cheese that I have at home on my gords.
Be the first to ReplyI'm pretty sure hair isn't suppose to be in your food.
Either way, food is overrated. When they first opened, food was great. The past two times the service is awful, food is mediocre, and hair has been in food. I would not recommend this place anymore.

Eater named this one of the 11 best new restaurants in the entire U.S. in 2021. It was some of the best Mexican food we've ever had.* Quesabirria are the stars - basically a deep-fried quesadilla/taco, with a broth that you dip it in.* Asada Gorditas were excellent, with clearly homemade shells.* We got some carnitas tacos and the pork was perfect. It's pay-and-try style service, but they manage to make the interior a little nicer than a standard Taqueria. There are outside tables that look nice but it was cold when we went. Also the staff are really friendly and very hard working.
Be the first to ReplyI ordered lunch from here and what a surprise.
I was not sure when moving to Sanford what my options for good takeout would be. ย The food was so flavorful and fresh. ย I have a big sweet tooth and so the chocolate flan was perfect. I also had the birra tacos and the dipping sauce was so good. I definitely see a weekend visit in my future.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite Mexican restaurant this side of the country,
My favorite Mexican restaurant this side of the country, seriously. I was stationed in SoCal for 5 years and ate all of the best food. Been searching for authentic tacos that had the perfect flavor, even the tortillas are fresh and fantastic. Our family eats there at least 3x a month! It's also a 40 minute drive and worth it every time!

ยกAY, dios mio! As a former Yuma Az native and used to having the best taco trucks in the country, Fonda Lupita is amazing! Simply put. It's just like a taco truck but actually a little hole in the wall. Quick, fast and delicious. I would have never expected to have authentic Mexican food in Sanford NC. I will be here quite often. I ate my food too quickly to post a pic. You definitely need to check this place out. The have one baby high chair so definitely baby friendly. They also have some games out front and some table and chairs. LOVE LOVE this place.

Grab some of the great snacks towards your right when waiting on line. Wait time was 55 minutes when we arrived yesterday, but the wait wasn't that long. I ordered the QuesaBirria combo which is 3 of the quesabirrias with the consume and a side of rice and beans. Husband ordered the Taco Pastor. Both come with a delicious hot sauce. We also ordered two Agua Frescas, Tamarindo and the Pepino Con Limon which is a cucumber lime taste. Very strong on the cucumber flavor, which I loved, but my husband did not. I grew up eating cucumber as a snack on my grandparents farm. Everything was delicious, and do not under estimate the amount of food, it was very filling. 10/10 recommend to anyone passing through Sanford, or even near Sanford.

Amazing!!!!! When you read that this restaurant has been named one of the Country's best newest restaurants...you have to go and check it out!We arrived for their lunch rush, the line was out the door and the staff gives you the expected wait time prior to ordering. They offer indoor and outdoor seating, seating is limited. They have a small menu but all the items available are excellent options and delicious. Our group ordered quesabirria combo with rice and beans- THE BEST beans hands down in the area. We tried shrimp, steak, carnitas in salsa verde and birria tacos, steak gorditas, and tamales!!! What really makes a difference are the hand made tortillas. On the weekends they serve menudo & pozole. Don't forget to order their agua frescas- juices While in line we heard lots of guest traveling from far just to check out this restaurant! Thanks for putting Sanford on the food map! Fonda Lupita is women owned
Be the first to ReplyNot 5 stars only because there was a long hair in my food.
I saw them wearing hair nets, but may need better ones. This new spot is still attracting crowds! Got there @12:30 on a Saturday & the wait for food completion was 45mins. Well worth the wait. My party was able to get a table as folks left. But it can be tight for seating (outdoor seating available). The line can take 5 minutes or so. The drink (hibiscus) I had was tasty and not too sweet. ALL the food was delish! Orders the shrimp taco, Quesabirria, chicken tamale, and carne asada gordita. Restroom was clean although didn't appear to completely close/lock. Snacks for purchase available as well. Great employees and service. Would definitely recommend again! Street parking. Plenty for a Saturday.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best Mexican restaurant hands down.
Everything is so good from the gorditas to the regular tacos.. and the drinks ย are delicious
Be the first to ReplyOff of their online menu, we bought their "popular" items.
The name "tacos" was plural and the picture had multiple tacos, so assumed the dish had multiple tacos. Same for the other three popular items. Found out that each popular item was singular. Very very expensive for what you get. For Mexican food, it was not salted enough, nor did they use any bold flavors. Tasted fresh...but not flavorful, and small portions
Be the first to ReplyGarbage was right outside the door.
Unsanitary! ย I assume the food taste good but the garbage outside took away my appetite.
