Food, service, ambiance all excellent! This was one of the best restaurants I have been to. Food is amazing. My husband and I did the 9 course tasting menu. There were some fish, steak, soup, etc. Every dish seemed like so much effort was put in to prepare. They actually grow herbs right in the kitchen and cut them as needed. The presentation is amazing as you can see in these photos. I will be back soon to try other dishes I didn't get to this day. I'm sure they will all be good as well.

This is the award winning trendy spot, also just featured in Hour magazine. Budget for $300 a couple. Very limited street parking, we were lucky to get a spot on Grand. They caution against car break ins on side streets. Do not park in Oak and Reel's private lot. 1/3 walls around the kitchen space, but for some reason half the seating faces away from the kitchen. They have table purse hooks and reading glasses for issue. Fixed price tasting menu, 5 courses, (plus salad and bread) and you choose from 3 to 4 choices for each course. They have a vegan and veggie choice and all that. All the food is very high end and arty, and presentation is just as important as taste. The staff is very well drilled. Briefing you on all the options, simultaneous service and removal of all the plates. Great service pacing for the courses. My wife dropped her napkin, it was taken care of discretely and quickly before she noticed. First class service. The food was all really good. In particular the swordfish crusted in crushed bugles, and the tenderloin, were perfect. Comparable food quality to Jose Andres in DC. Not enough to take off a point, but issues: 1. It was very loud when full. 2. The restroom floor was sticky.
Be the first to ReplyThe flavors are like no other in this very intimate setting.
Each chef prepared offering is better than the one before. Well trained staff with impeccable service. Love the local art adorning the walls. There's no question why at it was awarded restaurant of the year!
Be the first to ReplyThe service was impeccable, staff was very well informed
The service was impeccable, staff was very well informed about each component of the dish. Each course has a phenomenal marriage of flavors with a variety of ingredients. A splendid date night if you're comfortable paying 95$ a plate, you will leave full and satisfied after five courses; along with, bread and butter, starter salad and a take home treat.

I like a food experience and my husband just wants a good meal that doesn't feel too fancy and will fill him up. We got here and I got nervous that he'd hate it because of the serving style and he walked away SO happy. The food was delicious, I loved the nice drinks, the different portions, and the vibe, and my husband thought the food was incredible and that he got enough (he's a large man). We walked out of the restaurant and agreed that it was one of the better meals we've had and could not have gotten better service. We made a reservation right at 5pm when they opened so I'm not sure if the time of the evening helped, but we will definitely be back. The menu is seasonal too so while I loved every single dish I ordered, I'm excited that I'll get to try new dishes on our next trip!

It was very average and I felt like I had been fooled into believing it was awesome. It's too bad, Detroit is a great place for new inventive food
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant has been on my list for over two years.
Decided to go to the restaurant a few weeks ago (delayed post) and I have really mixed emotions. The vibe was really dope. I love the ambience and the aesthetics. The food on the other hand was..... I can't even find a word to describe it. I was not impressed at all. $95 each and I'm still hungry.. I noticed that there were several pairs of reading glasses at the front desk, I truly believe they were there so you could see the food. Presentation was beautifully displayed but my belly was unappreciative.

After reading tons of amazing reviews, I suggested Freya for a nice dinner out with two other couples. I really really wanted to love this place, but our experience did not live up to our expectations. The space was beautiful, the waitstaff was attentive, and the dishes were interesting, but the food itself just didn't wow us. Of the five course tasting menus, there was only one dish that I loved, and the others were just okay. My entree also arrived lukewarm, which I chalked up to the fact that our table of 6 had several different entrees which all arrived at the same time. While this certainly made for a nice presentation, I'd rather have my food get to me warm rather than a sit for a bit (which is what I assume happened) waiting for the other entrees to be ready so all could be served together. At this price point, it'll probably be a while before we give Freya another try.
Be the first to ReplyWe enjoyed the New Year's Eve 5-course, prix fixe ($165 pp)
We enjoyed the New Year's Eve 5-course, prix fixe ($165 pp) menu with wine pairings (at an additional $89 pp) on this first visit to Freya. The co-owner welcomed us with a beautiful glass of celebratory champagne and showed us to our seats inside the wide, open room offering plenty of space between dining parties. Background music played low enough to speak in normal tones and be easily heard. Nice! Know that you can come as you are. There's no pretension or judgement here. Hailey, our knowledgeable and professional server, worked with ten other servers to get the food out to patrons as soon as it was prepared by the Chefs and their assistants. Watching them work in concert at the back of the room was an experience in itself! The crusty, warm, house-made sourdough bread was excellent. Each course was attended to completely and plated gorgeously. The flavors were so well integrated! The Lobster Potato Bisque incredibly flavorful. The wine pairings were out of this world. Kudos to the Sommelier! I recommend Freya for special occasions. Two caveats: Expect the dining to be a two-and-a-half to three hour experience, AND bring your wallet. It is very pricey.
Be the first to ReplyFreya is the latest venture from the team behind the well
Freya is the latest venture from the team behind the well known Chartreuse restaurant. It is a beautiful open space with an open air kitchen which allows you to watch the hustle and bustle of the chefs as they create beautiful dishes. Additionally, this restaurant supports and features art from local artists around the dining room. freya is unique in that it features a 95$ 5 course menu where you have the opportunity to choose from multiple offerings in each course. The menu changes often as it features ingredients that are in season. Additionally, the restaurant is very accommodating to different diets such as vegan, gluten free, veggie, pescatarian. From the moment we entered the restaurant it was obvious that the restaurant's goal is to make sure that you have a memorable experience. They offered us a glass of complimentary champagne to start the evening off right. Additionally they brought to the table freshly baked squash bread and accommodated my gluten allergy with a freshly baked GF biscuit. Since there were four of us dining, we decided to order all of the options per course and share the dishes to sample as many flavours as possible. I must say that all of the dishes were executed to perfection. It was obvious that the chefs' considered balancing flavours and textures when composing each dish. At the end of the meal they even brought a complimentary gift to take home; homemade fig bars and gluten free chocolates. If you want to keep the night going, you can go next door to check out Dragonfly; the restaurant's sister bar. Our experience at freya was memorable and the food was delicious. I look forward to returning in the future.
Be the first to ReplyBy far the BEST restaurant in Detroit! The menu is creative
By far the BEST restaurant in Detroit! The menu is creative and eclectic. The food was beautifully presented and ingredients were healthy and fresh. A combinations of ingredients blow my mind! The service was stellar and the atmosphere unpretentious and simply urban. The attention to detail was beyond and over the top! It's an unbelievable dining experience. One I highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyIn a word: Average.
Service is excellent and everyone was very friendly, which was nice. Otherwise, the food was extremely average. Ron L summed it up... If you are someone who is writing your review with a bag full of Lays on the couch, you probably would be very impressed. But having a meal served in courses does not make it palatable. Every dish was either pedestrian, or way too involved for its own good. Our menu included:Bison tartare - fresh tasing but woefully lacked flavor. Go home, open some beef and eat it raw. Now you get the idea. Roasted sweet potato - The three slices that came with this dish were tasty. I ordered the potato salad, but despite that, this came instead. It was good.Rabbit Cassoulet - It really fell off the wheels here. I was happy to see this on the menu. Generally, beans, sausage, pork or goose in a stew. Really delicious. This was... something... else.... Beans were there (win), then rabbit (flavor- meh), duck bacon (in this case, think overcooked chicken - also... duck bacon?) and the inclusion of a bone which I almost broke a tooth on was an added surprise. Hangar steak - Steak was cooked very well, and the lobster was a nice touch. Salt cod in phyllo dough tasted as if someone had never had salt cod. Salt is the mode of preservation, not intended to taste like salt.Desert - Chocolate was fine. Detroit was on a roll for a while and it is nice to have options. This, however, feels like an attempt to be elevated without the taste to be special. Price point is what a lot of posters are talking about. A four course meal in many cities would cost twice this - but there is probably a reason for that.
Be the first to ReplyLet me summarize this review in two words: mustard seeds.
Went for dinner with my wife last night and asked extensively what our server recommended, and picked all recommendations. We had a smattering of dishes, bison tartare, oysters, sturgeon, sweet potatoes, raw blue potatoes, rock shrimp, mushrooms, pork tenderloin and trout. For dessert, we had the citrus dish and the thyme dessert. Let's start with the good:Service: 5 stars. Attentive and well done, though the pacing in between some courses could have been a bit better, I'll forgive this and was overall very, very satisfied. They do include a generous 22% gratuity in the bill, but I have no complaints here. Very friendly staff. Food: 2 stars. Both desserts were great. Flavorful, light and playful. 4 stars on the dessert. I'd also say the pork and trout were quite good as main courses. Flavorful, juicy, pleasant. 4 stars on those. However, it seems like the chef is on a mustard seed kick and almost every dish had mustard seeds or a mustardy profile to it: the pork tenderloin had a mostarda with it, the raw potato dish, the rock shrimp, the mushrooms, I believe even the tartare had mustard seeds. Consequently, I felt like the same notes were being hit on my palate too frequently. Sort of a salty, briny, acidy, somewhat bitter note came with every dish except dessert. The oyster meat was delicious, but it got ruined by a topping of overly salty items. I couldn't taste picked shallots or anything else. All I got was salt...and I love salt. Some items, like the mushroom dish were overly charred and bitter. I'd give the rest of the meal 1.5-2 stars for flavor. It was quite disappointing. The sturgeon dish was also dry and the accompaniment to it was way too salty. Unfortunately, we've also been to Chartreuse lately and experienced the same. It was always our favorite restaurant, but it seems the chef is on a particular flavor profile kick that borders on unpleasant after eating just one dish. Oversalted, some things overcharred and bitter, and briny. Again, I love salt! But this is just too far. My palate needed a reprieve from this profile applying to every dish. This was honestly a darn shame. Chartreuse used to offer an awesome experience every meal, and we were hoping Freya would do the same given they're owned by the same proprietors. Unfortunately, I don't think we will be going back. Based on the toughness to get reservations, though, it seems my wife and I are in the minority, which is just fine. I wish them nothing but success, but the flavor profile of our favorite restaurant has evolved to a place where we no longer identify with it.

Me and my partner went here for dinner and it was truly an amazing experience. We had an 8pm reservation (I highly recommend a reservation for this restaurant.) Our table wasn't ready yet so the host kindly showed us to their sister bar, which is connected to them called the Dragonfly, so that we could get drinks while we waited. They also have a cute lounge area if you don't want to grab a drink while you wait. Once the table was ready maybe 10 minutes after 8pm, the host came back to get us and sat us at our table. We were offer a complementary choice of sparkling wine or a nonalcoholic option to start our experience which I thought was a very nice touch. We also had two servers who could help us which made our service fast and both were very friendly. After we placed our order for all of our courses, they start you with bread/butter and a salad while you wait for your first course. We picked different things from each course so we could share and try each others dishes. The size of the food starts smaller and gradually gets bigger, the sizes of the dishes are good to make sure you are full but we didn't have any left overs. My favorite dishes were course 1- oysters (I ate one so fast before I remembered to take a picture) and my 4th course which, I picked the Steelhead Trout(Get it! Truly amazing). The price for dinner is always the same $90 for the 5 course meal and you can choose to add either a cocktail or wine pairing at $50 to go with that. We opted to just order drinks off the menu, which we were happy with. Overall Freya was great and worth every penny, but you will be spending at least $100 per person so maybe for more of a special occasion dinner or when you want to really treat yourself and others.

Freya is an absolute dream and I love that it exists in the wonderful city of Detroit! It's affordable fine dining (a full tasting menu of food there will probably run around $80, not including the alcohol or non-alcoholic drink pairings) with a full fine dining experience! You get proper introductions and background to everything that you're eating and drinking and the full service of refolding your napkins when you get up from the table, cleaning the crumbs off the table between courses, etc. I don't know about you, but it's these little things that really get me and take a restaurant over the top in the best way possible! If I could give Freya more than 5 stars, I would!I love that the tasting menu outlines each course and essentially gives you a multiple choice option to select which dish you want in each course. We appreciate a menu that can be tailored to a person's tastes and interests, while still expanding their world view and palette! Additionally, as I briefly mentioned earlier, the fact that Freya has a non-alcoholic drink pairing option is beyond for someone who doesn't drink alcohol! I enthusiastically ordered the NA pairing and every drink was absolutely delicious and paired so well with each dish - I thoroughly enjoyed it!All in all, I couldn't recommend Freya enough! I had such a full experience here, delicious food and drink, wonderful staff, beautiful vibes, and at the end of it all, the price tag for the entire experience was much lower than expected for the level of service and experience provided! At any other "fine dining" establishment, this kind of dinner would've been well into the three digits.Freya, I appreciate you so much! I can't wait to come back again soon and try out new dishes from the constantly rotating, seasonal menu! See you soon!
Be the first to ReplyEverything was amazing.
My Godsisters and I took our Godmother here for her 72nd Birthday. Abigail was our server and she was magnificent. We loved that they had a album menu and asked you to select an album. That's right they played vinyl records. We started with a glass of Riesling wine. There was wonderful bread with vegan flavored and regular flavored butters. We had a salad that was like a beautiful symphony in your mouth. Next was a five course meal. Everything was phenomenal. Each staff member that work there was helpful, attentive, and paid attention to detaWe are definitely coming back.

We went to Freya for my husband's birthday dinner and had an amazing experience. Started off next door at Dragonfly for a few cocktails, which were fun and tasty. The bartender checked and let us know when our table was ready and led us over to Freya. From start to finish, this was the best service I have ever experienced at a restaurant. The hostess promptly sat us and brought us complimentary champagne. The server greeted us within a minute. Brought fresh made bread and yummy flavored butter. Then a salad course came out, also complimentary. We ordered, and the courses came out seemlessly. We never had dirty plates or silverware in front of us, never an empty drink. The food was delicious. My favorites were the bison tartare and the pork with caramel sauce. It is definitely a pricey night out, but it is certainly worth every dollar.
Be the first to ReplyLet me start off by saying I know nothing about restaurants
Let me start off by saying I know nothing about restaurants of this caliber. I'm a regular guy who's writing this review while eating potato chips out of a bag. Let's start with service. From the moment you walk in the joint, err establishment, you're greeted by an array of warm, smiling faces. It's dark in there, so take your choice of the reader glasses while they take your coat and "small talk you" on the way to your table -- which already has home-baked bread and complimentary drinks before you can say anything. The staff is a dizzying display since you don't really have one server. You have 15. Well ok, maybe not 15. But new faces are constantly coming to the table to bring things or take them away. It's like an orchestra. Truly. You can't help but feel like you're the most important person in the room here. And the detail with which the waitstaff describe the dishes, and the passion they have for the product, it's hard not to be as enthusiastic as they are. The food? This isn't food. It's art that's edible. Truly. Everything put in front of you is designed, created, and plated with care. It's a prix fixe menu with five courses. I started with sturgeon huckleberry something, which was like a sushi roll in a delicious sauce. Weird, but in kind of in an amazing way. I went on with some kind of broccolini course, and then a pierogi in a crème freche which kind of shocked my palate. It was an explosion of flavors which I'm not used to. This was way over my head. I had an angus hanger steak as my main course which was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. Like stunningly delicious. Finally the meal came to an end with a chocolate crunchy desert with wafers of some kind. A fight almost broke out at the table for the last bite. Drinks are all custom designed and made with care. I don't drink, so they showed me an array of non-alcoholic drinks which were delightful. I had the "Dog's Meow" because the name humored me. Pretty solid stuff. Ambiance is stellar. It's not a big place, but it's beautiful inside. Our table was next to the chef station which gave us a partial view of the magic happening right in front of us. There's a bar area in the middle of the box-styled room, which makes for a great design, and just a really beautifully appointed elegant venue. The tables are far enough apart that you feel like you're on your own little island. There's only a dozen or so tables in the whole place. Pricing is my only criticism. I get it, this is an exceptional place. And exceptional places have exceptional prices. But this place is touted as fine dining for the rest of the 95% of us. And my wife and I spent more than $300 for our dinner. Keep in mind, I don't drink. It's just a bit more than was reasonable. To me, a place of this caliber should be $100 a person. We're in midtown Detroit. Not the West End of London. In closing, this was an epic experience for my wife and me. It's been two days and we're still talking about little details we hadn't thought to discuss about the evening. Just an incredible restaurant which I can't help but feel pride about given our beautiful city starting to earn a reputation as a foodie's paradise. Prices aside, I cannot recommend this establishment more highly. It's a meal I'll remember for quite a while.

Let's be clear; there are many other good restaurants in Detroit, but there is only one Freya. The food is excellent (pardon me while I live in the caramel sauce under the pork tenderloin). The service is off the hook; thank you Dan and Ashley for yet another lovely evening. Look, Restaraunt people, you could go elsewhere, but why?? Unless you are on your way to Chartreuse... go, kids, go to Freya.
