Excellent in every way!
We were there as a birthday treat. I was not dissappointed. The tasting menu with the drink pairings made the three hour experience a wonderful gift. With each course we were given a spectacular taste experience which included a delightful visual one as well. Sampled both alcoholic and non alcohol drinks. Delicious! Incredible attention to detail and exceptional service. Could not recommend it enough.
Be the first to ReplyA " Michelin Star " is born!!......with potential to add one more!!
For Frilu to persevere, survive the pandemic threat and finally becoming a Michelin star recipient was a miraculous achievement. In response to these events plus the addition of an ongoing inflation menace. As with some of its peers, Frilu has decided to adjust their modus operandi by implementing a much needed pricing increase, elimination of a costly wine program whilst incorporating a mandatory alcoholic or non-alcoholic pairing option with this metamorphosis. Pre-payment by credit card, inclusive of gratuities and tax, is required at time of reservation. Tonight, our ever changing, ‘ingredient and market driven‘ Nordic/Nippon Omakase multi-course tasting menu featured the following delectable offerings: Seaside Snacks: Lobster, tarragon salad, salted egg yolk dust, butter tartlets ‘French Kiss’ oyster, fennel lemon foam Landside Snacks: Black Quinoa, cocoa and duck liver ‘Oreo’ cookie Beef tartare, blueberry-boshi Sweetbread Teriyaki Warm Bread: House baked K2 Milling Sourdough, Sesame butter Ground with Sea: Celery root mousse, soy-marinated Ikura, roasted Kombu Hay Smoke: Hay smoked Hokkaido Scallops, Caviar, Lovage, Pear Earth Apple: Sunchoke, Walnut Chicken Fat BBQ Root: Bincho charcoal grilled Parsley root, jus, BBQ sauce Winter Fish: Crispy skin Striped Bass, sauteed Spinach, Plum Miso Aged Fowl: Roasted Pheasant, Wild Rice, Truffle jus, Egg Yolk Red Lamb: Day long, slow roasted Ontario lamb, charred Brussel sprout, Scallion & Watercress sauce Refreshing Break: Salted Ricotta, Cardamom, Aged plum syrup Tuber and Cream: Olive oil Chiffon cake, sweet potato ice cream, Houjicha The End: Small dessert bites of Choux a la Creme, Marshmallow and Chocolate Canneles Roasted rice Japanese green tea OMG! If there is ever a near faultless meal with near faultless service to be had in Toronto, tonight’s breathtaking and awe-inspiring Frilu tasting menu offering must be it!! Dish after dish after impressive dish, brought forth to our table, all exuded culinary creativity and mastery. After so many repeated visits, I am still at a loss as to how the kitchen team can conceive such brilliant culinary work-of-art in such a small cubicle kitchen space?! Greeted first by simple yet elegant and eye-pleasing plate presentation. Subsequent bites of the well-thought-of food, released amazing layers of flavor and sensation that reverberated in the palate. Yes! Fine dining, with reverential treatment of quality ingredients and prepared simply and lovingly could be a thing of rare beauty. BTW, the difference between the ‘then’ ( pre-Michelin ) and the ‘now’ ( post-Michelin ) was a notable and inspiring ‘star-quality‘ touch and sophistication, added to the menu and all areas of the food composition. With a constant parade of 16 courses, from bitesize amuse-bouche to generous portion entrees. For me to provide a detailed description of each dish will most likely end up in the scope of a full-blown magazine article rather than a regular abbreviated food blogging post! As such, I hope the inclusion of a fairly concise menu, as per captioned above, augmented by my photo array, should provide enough information for your imagination to run wild and make your own interpretation?! That said, I would like to offer a special mention to some of my evening’s favorite dishes….truly outstanding and alluringly tasty chef-d’oeuvre. These included: - The lobster tartlet ( A one bite umami bomb with superb textural contrast ) - The Teriyaki Sweetbread ( who doesn’t like char-grilled Teriyaki? The sweet and savory Frilu Sweetbread version packed full of charcoal smokey aroma, crispy and Chewy. Wow!! ) - Celery root cream with Ikura ( definitely star worthy! Sooooo good! My top 3 favorites! ) - Scallop ( Layer upon layer of bewildering flavor and textural profile. For a barely cooked scallop, cannot get tastier than this! ) - Sunchoke ( this extravaganza was speechlessly tasty. The infusion of hot chicken fat, a master touch! Bravo! ) - Pheasant ( Crispy skin, moist and juicy, perfectly cooked meat, rich and dense truffle Sauce. Another ‘wow’ dish! ) - Ontario Lamb ( No description needed! The photo showing the piece of evenly Cooked, perfectly pink meat says it all! ). The rest of the delectable dishes including the refreshing and well composed desserts all deserve honorable mention! Toronto finally has a well deserved Michelin star recipient! Bravo Frilu

Hard to find places like this NOT in downtown Toronto. Amazing tasting menu - amazing service. Chef came out at times to highlight the courses. We had one person with food allergies which they also accomodated. Served us complimentary sake due to a birthday at the table

It is a gem in Thornhill. The service & food are amazing. Great thought & labour have out into every dish. The beef tongue, cod & aged waterfowl are exceptionally tasty. Earth Apple dessert was made to perfection to end the night. The weakest link were the hand made pasta & sour dough. I was expecting a more authentic al dente pasta & interesting bread to match other dishes. Nonetheless a very enjoyable meal which is worth re-visiting.

Frilu has become one of the best restaurants in the Toronto region. Their ten dish new tasting menu was outstanding and worth every dollar that we paid for it. It has a little bit of everything. From seafood, veggies, fish, meat and of course desssrt. There is limited seatting so reservations have to be made in advance.
Be the first to ReplyFRILU – A triumphant post-Covid lockdown re-opening!
As an avid gourmand, one of the harshest punishments this protracted Pandemic lock-down managed to inflict on me was the deprivation of sit-down, fine dining experiences at some of my favorite restaurants. As such, it was God-send and music to my ears when ‘re-opening’ news pertaining to my most beloved GTA ‘tasting menu’ culinary destination – Frilu reached me! Using all the charms, influence and luck I could mustered, I managed to secure an extremely coveted, table for 4 on a holiday long-weekend! Arriving at the restaurant for an early 5.30 pm first sitting, it was so nice seeing familiar and friendly faces again. As well, it was a delight exchanging updates and pleasantries with both their smiling, front and back-of-house staffs (though the smiles were hidden behind masks! Ha!) After such a long hiatus, I’m glad to report the talented kitchen team did NOT miss a beat!! The lovingly executed and artfully plated, ‘ Nordic cuisine with Asian/Japanese twist ‘ menu was as creative, capricious and delicious as before.....and those amazing array of tasty sauces! Aaagh!! The menu for this evening’s ‘Omakase‘ meal is as follows: Chef's Tasting – Summer 2021 $140 Bread & Butter Frilu sourdough Couple Bites Fried sweetbread, spruce salt & Crispy Polenta, raw beef sashimi, green onion B.C. Spot Prawn Beef consomme, salted radish, BC Sturgeon Caviar Charred Salad Cucumber, puffed grains, Green Goddess dill dressing Surf and Turf Lobster, Beef jus, Zucchini flower Simple Leek Chicken fat & egg yolk Hollandaise, Bread miso Pasta by Hand Ricotta, mint, Meat jus Steelhead Trout Asparagus, Kombu, Bonito, Saffron cream Linton Pasture Pork Salted plum, Dandelion pesto Refreshing Break Rhubarb, strawberry, white chocolate Green and White Pea ice cream, goat bavarois, lemon balm After dinner Coffee Cake Once again, as in the past, our meal was near flawless and delectable. The resulting pleasurable ‘total-package’ experience left us all happy and contented! Even the intermittent rain drops that became an optional condiment to some of our dishes were not enough to spoil our memorable occasion! Suffice to say, if you usually like eating at Frilu, based on tonight’s wonderful food preparation, I know you'll love this new menu. And if you haven't been before... well, this is a great time to support this local gem and give it a try!
Be the first to ReplyFinally re-opened! - An amazing light dinner that garnered as many ‘wows’ as dishes ordered!
As a devoted fan of ‘tasting menu dining experiences ‘, the opening of the ‘ Nordic/Japanese’ influenced “Frilu”, just a short drive down the road from my home was a God sent! Now, for high quality, inspired ‘western Omakase’, I can remain up-town and no longer have to brave the notorious Don Valley rush hour traffic, in order to savor such experiences down town. Since their opening less than a couple of years ago, I have tried out each and every one of their memorable, seasonal changing, creative and delectable menu offering. Sadly, the onset of this Covid pandemic has deprived me of such enjoyment. For over 6 months I have been yearning for their re-opening. After being notified a month ago of their dine-in option returning, I decided to pay Chef Troiano and his talented kitchen staff a much-overdue visit. Even though, for now, they will only be offering a la carte dishes. The dinner I shared with my foodie brother-in-law tonight was near perfection! After such a long hiatus, the chef and his kitchen miraculously did not miss a single beat! Every dish was uniquely conceived, lovingly prepared and innovative-ly crafted and presented. The clever use of Japanese Bincho-tan charcoal, in a western kitchen, for grilling mushrooms, duck, beef rib….etc was a masterful touch, resulting in gorgeous smoky aroma of some key ingredients taking the center stage! We shared the following dishes (with repeat orders for some of the outstanding ones): - Foie de Poulet Parfait ( Chicken Liver mousse, toasted Sourdough crisp ) - Fagottini di Bisonte ( Pulled braised Bison Short-rib in pastry with sauce ) - Lobster on Crispy Rice ( Shredded lobster meat dressed with chive, horseradish emulsion ) - B.C Tuna & Smoke ( lightly smoked Tataki Tuna paired with Fennel, Konbu Oil & Parsley cream ) X 2 - Mineral/Briny ( Charcoal grilled Maitake mushroom, Ikura foam ) X 2 - Duck/Grain ( Charcoal grilled aged Duck Breast, creamed corn, char-grilled whole scallions ) - Dark & Light ( Chocolate granite, strawberry, Chantilly ). Overall, every dish we ordered was a hit! From the super velvety smooth and creamy Foie pate to the butter oozing, crispy thin phyllo-pastry wrapper for the pulled-Bison, to the interesting textured and tasting lobster crispy Nigiri, to the lightly smoked, melt-in-the-mouth fresh Tuna, to the ultra-aromatic and delicious char-grilled duck..….etc. Even the simple char-grilled scallions can taste so amazingly delicious ( reminds me of the Basque region in Spain! ) However, a special mention has to be given to the fantastic tasting Maitake Mushroom and its Ikura foam accompaniment! Wow! What a treat for the senses! The smoky aroma infused, juicy and meaty Maitake paired with the salty Ikura foam sauce was a match made in heaven! Sooo good! We ordered extra dishes and asked for extra bread to mop up the sauce!! Sadly, there was a minor downside! We were so looking forward to order a fish main course. The Halibut was right up our alley but somehow, the supplier was late with the fish delivery and the dish was not available! Sigh!! What an incredible evening of great food and fine company!! Now, I just hope I will be symptom free for the next 14 days!!

At Frilu, you don’t eat food, you experience it. From the moment you step, you are greeted with very friendly staff that make sure your night out is perfect. Every dish is flawless, and bursts with unique flavour, from pasta all the way to bison. It was one of the best restaurants I have ever been in, and I would totally recommend anyone to go there. This is not the type of restaurant you go for a short rapid meal. And it’s definitely not your typical style of dinner, but it’s not meant to be, and that’s what makes it so special. It’s a shame that the Michelin star does not come to Canada.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent! Top notch cooking going on here!
Previously had the summer and fall menus, and just now had the winter menu. Again, there's some wonderful creations being made by chef John-Vincent. Not just well presented with fresh ingredients, which they are, but truly savoury and delicious. I've had the opportunity to dine at many fine restaurants in the world and the cuisine being presented here compares just as well. This is truly fine dining. Service is also top calibre just as the food. The restaurant may be a bit lacking in decor or location, but that's irrelevant, the dishes being offered are world-class and downright top-notch delicious!

We went for dinner to Frilu not knowing what to expect. Surprise! This is one of the best restaurants in the city! Spectacular tasting menu....right amount...very innovative and original. Service is perfect. Everyone shoul try it.
Be the first to ReplyFrilu is totally incredible
Frilu is totally incredible for all your senses. The room is peaceful and beautifully designed. Staff are friendly but at the same time very professional. There is a very good wine and sake knowledge. The food....stunning in its presentation but magnificent in tastes and flavours. I love how Chef Owner John world incredibly hard to focus in on both the seasons and master utilizing all parts of the product for little waste. This is a place for romance as well as special occasions ur personally I can’t wait just to dine here again. Try and sit at the bar by the kitchen to watch the chef ballet. Be the first to ReplyDelicious Fall Menu!
Had the summer menu a couple months ago so we came back recently for the fall menu "Leaves change, Brisk morning, Still Time". As we found with their summer menu, the items were delicious, well presented, and creative. The courses here are interesting, and very, very good! Definitely a recommendation for others to try Frilu (once again)!
