Love this place- the food is incredibly flavorful, every time I eat here I think to myself that it is the best food in Chicago. Adore the margaritas, hand made tortillas, ceviche, salsa , enchiladas, carne asada, tamales. Their brunch is also delicious. Do not skip dessert. Atmosphere is lively. Do not eat here in a rush- takes a long time to get food and check. Expect an included 20% service charge.

Always a good option at OHare for a tasty torta and margarita, but I'm pretty disappointed with their latest version of their salad. It used to be filled with chicks or avocado, tomatoes, and carrots , now it's puréed avocado (probably not fresh) and onion, corn and beans. $14 for base salad plus I added chicken for $4. I really miss the shrimp opinion they used to have.
Be the first to ReplySopas are worth the trip.
You will quickly realize Mexican cousins is much deeper and richer than Tex-mex. The mole was rich and deep and worth the trip. The sopas with beef we like winning the lotto.

One of ny all time favorite restaurants! This review is long overdue. I've been here countless times and I've always had great experiences. They keep the menu fresh with new dishes, all with really great flavors.Their salsas are exquisite.

Always a great dinner! Have been coming here for over 20 years, and every time, simply perfection. Pricey, but well worth it!

We have been coming to Frontera Grill for decades and have never experienced such a poor night out in all of our visits to your restaurant..We were sat down at our table at 8:30. I noticed that the restaurant was not as lively as usual which concerns me that the experience we had might be more common. Once we were sat down nobody even said hi to us for over 30 minutes. We had to ask for someone to come to our table. We ordered drinks with our waiter. My friend ordered a dirty martini and our waiter didn't know what that was. When his drink arrived it was vodka in martini glass with a like peel on the rim. I also ordered a rum drink and had to send it back. Our food took a very long time to get delivered to us and it was subpar , my steak was overcooked and dry. This is was completely the opposite of any other times we had dined with you. Our waiter recommended the donuts for dessert and nobody at our table liked them at all. When we got our bill it said that we had to pay a mandatory 20% gratuity. Our waiter delivered the bill and explained that the 20% gratuity does not go to him , he made it clear that this was NOT a tip. We asked him to come back and explain the 20%, then he said maybe 5% of it goes to him. We asked the manager to our table who explained they were salaried and it goes to all employees. We didn't mind paying a 20% tip, but with terrible service we did not want to add anything on top of our very high bill. I also worry that a guaranteed gratuity may have led to the workers not being motivated to provide for a good experience.
Be the first to ReplyI really wanted to love this place but my high expectations
I really wanted to love this place but my high expectations got the best of me. Came here after a completely rude phone reservation and the impatient call taker handed the phone to someone else because they thought I couldn't speak English. We were greeted quickly and seated in a table near the bar. I think we saw our server a total of 20 seconds all night. While he was friendly, it was obvious that he was in a rush. I don't know why because it wasn't super busy when we came in. As for the food and drinks, I had the Tropical Fiesta Margarita and it was darn good. For appetizers, we went with the oysters and ceviche platter. There were 3 different oysters and two different ceviches and everything was amazing. For the main meal, I had the Crispy Duck Carnitas. I liked the crispy skin on the duck but it was a tad dry as we all sampled it. The tiny container of salsa was only filled a quarter of the way. The Puebla Style Enchiladas were phenomenal. I guess the stars were primarily for the food but people skills could use some polishing. It's always disappointing when you go to a celebrity chef restaurant and not catch a glimpse but that's a personal thing and I'm sure Chef Bayless is traveling to find his next inspiration.
Be the first to ReplyWe went for an early evening Restaurant week dinner.
The fixed menu is what draws us to the variety of restaurants during those 2 weeks. Sadly, we would rate this as an average experience. The options were fine. Course 1: the ceviche was very tasty, the sopas were good. Course 2: the Skate was over fried, the carne asada was perfect for just shy of medium. Course 3: well it must have been not memorizable since we can't recall what it was. Again good but not signature. What is the kicker, the 20% fixed tip. We try to tip well for service that is worthy. The fixed tip, and everyone gets a trophy, leads to fair to subpar service. A different establishment, and tip the above 20%, which is our minimum tip. We had tried many times in the past to "get in" for dinner. This may be in part for the reason we were able to on this occasion.
Be the first to ReplyFood was ok.
The service seems to have given up since they get an automatic 20% gratuity, no longer how long it took to get a drink. The space is really crammed and with the servers not seeming to care much, it was not an experience I want to live through again. I've been here before and it was good, but it was disappointing this last time which I think may have done it for me, especially with the automatic gratuity.

Chicago Restaurant Week 2023!Lunch special - looks to be the same menu as dinner but for less!Frontera Grill, one of the OG establishments from Rick Bayless does not disappoint. All the food options were delicious. We also asked for a side of salsas. Habeñero had a good kick, but if too much heat isn't your thing the red and green are amazing as well for the smoky, chili flavors.Entrees for protein, chicken grilled sitting on top of mole or steak are both very good options. I really enjoyed the steak, medium rare was perfectly cooked, cut with a butter knife. We also had a complimentary side of fresh, warm tortillas to go with lunch. Nicely portion as well. Note that 20% service charge is not same as tip, kinda confusing, but we tipped again. This seems to be a normal thing even on their regular menu.Dessert, both are good, just a matter of preference. Cake is light sweet and the torched meringue.. so good. Pecan is rich, filling chocolate.
Be the first to ReplySIMPLY AMAZING.
Frontera is serving authentic Mexican fare in the heart of Chicago and I love it! My husband and I were traveling and didn't want a fast lunch, we wanted to linger and enjoy our meal and Frontera Grill did not disappoint. We were greeted by the hostess and waited about 10-minutes, it was the height of lunch so we expected to wait. There is a bar on the backside of the dining area, so you can grab a cocktail and hang out until your table is ready. Upon being seated were greeted by our server, I wish I remembered his name...he was amazing, giving details about each dish, making recommendations on drink specials and was fresh in season. I started with the ceviche and it was amazing, so fresh and authentic. I loved the presentation, I mean we eat with our eyes right! We dove into the chips and salsa, spicy with a tang of lime, just how I like it. My husband ordered chicken tacos, the meat was full of flavor and the tortillas were made to order. AND my favorite part, the plantains and flan. I could order the two as my meal, the plantains were sweet and grilled perfectly and the flan was straight out of aubela's kitchen. To end my meal I opted for a mexican hot chocolate...I know it should have been a margarita, but it was hand shaved chocolate with steeped whole milk (I typically do not consume dairy, but today was a good day)! So the next time you find yourself in Chicago, go past the burger and pizza shops and head to Frontera for an authentic meal with great charm and a friendly staff.

I was there this past Saturday, it was my first time at this restaurant. It was an amazing experience, had a wonderful time. So happy I had this experience considering it was my first time dining in a restaurant since pre-covid. Was with my cousin celebrating my birthday, The food was absolutely amazing; the staff was wonderful. I was waited on by Alejandro who was wonderful and I also was visited by the manager Jessica who was so nice. We had a few other people who also were attending us who were so nice. Overall, great atmosphere, and great hospitality. This was the best birthday and restaurant experience ever.

I had been before and had an amazing experience this time was different, and not for the better. The hosts were not the most informative or helpful people. "We could have a cancellation in an hour. Check back in 30 minutes." WHAT?Best guacamole though. The carnitas were excellent. The Puebla enchiladas had been sitting for a while and were very dry. The champagne margarita was excellent! Get something with mole!
Be the first to ReplyFrontera Grill is a favorite on my list.
On my last visit, I did not have a reservation but I was placed on a waiting list. It didn't take long before my table was ready. The food options were wonderful and so flavorful. Our server was great and she explained the details of certain dishes and answered questions for us. We had a wonderful time, I am glad I brought my group to this restaurant when someone in my group was craving authentic Mexican food and others wanted a nice dinning experience. I feel that I was able to keep everyone happy with this choice. I will certainly return.
Be the first to ReplyTerribly slow service.
Just OK food. Let's just say I won't be bringing anyone here again from out of town. Too bad since out of towers have typically heard about the place. The staff appeared to not care about taking our orders or serving them. The only efficiencies I saw were with the the clearing of the table and presenting the check with a 20% tip already added in. By the way,we typically tip more than 20% but additional gratuity was not the least bit warranted, no wonder the tip is automatically added in, the service doesn't even warrant 20%.

We made a pit stop here on our trip through Paducah from Nashville because of the several 5-star ratings. Our initial thoughts were that the dining area was incredibly clean and that the service was attentive and friendly. For a late lunch, it was still reasonably packed, showing that it is a well-liked neighborhood hangout. My wife and kid got chicken fajitas and steak burrito plates, respectively, while I ordered a plate of beef burritos. The fajitas and burritos were excellent. Although the cuisine wasn't 5-star or the best Mexican food I've ever eaten, it was nonetheless wonderful and the service was outstanding.

What a great brunch! It was my brothers birthday and we got EVERYTHING! Including 2 rounds of incredible, perfectly potent margaritas, and five desserts (for 3 people!) Great service, spacious outdoor seating, and delicious food.
Be the first to ReplyCan't do 0 stars but the worst staff at hostess stand.
I've been to many James Beard and Michelin star nominated and awarded restaurants and never have I had service like here. The restaurant was literally empty and had two occupied outdoor tables with the waiters standing around doing nothing. The bar also 100% empty and when we walked by an hour later 3 tables occupied so the terrible staff notes are 100% accurate. Sad really they turn business away while empty.

LOVED THIS PLACE!We went on a Friday evening (DEFINITELY recommend reserving a table in advance!) we ordered the seasonal hibiscus old fashioned, smoked chicken taquitos, sopecitos rancheros, and the steak carnes al carbon para tacos. Usually I'd do a pros and cons list but I have nothing to list as a con! Our server was attentive and gave great recommendations for what we should try, and the food was AMAZING! Wished we saved room for dessert but we didn't, I would definitely go back.
Be the first to ReplyA cool celebrity-chef restaurant with very nice decor.
The food is tasty, interior Mexican, but it felt.... Incomplete.Mole is a very iconic, tasty, and complex sauce. They nailed it. And then they don't shred the chicken, no cheese or cream, and no sesame seeds on the enchiladas. I get it, this is the chef's interpretation, but my they felt a bit dry and flat. A shame because the mole was great. Some good, hot salsa would be welcome.I had to wait for 45 mins to sit at the bar, so make reservations. Their tequila and mezcal menu is extensive and of good quality. There are other things on the menu I want to try.Good spot. I would recommend it.

We came on restaurant week and ordered the following:Appetizers:- Fresh Corn Tamales- Frontera CevicheBetween these two, the Ceviche were better. They were both decent, but nothing to write home about.Entrees- Crunchy-Coated New England Skate Wing- Chicken, Mole PoblanoThe Skate Wing chicken had a slight spicy flavor, which was nice. But generally, both of these dishes were just okay. Dessert- Tres Leches- Chocolate Pecan PieThe Tres Leches was pretty disappointing. The Chocolate Pecan Pie was quite nice and was a decent serving size.Overall, Frontera is fine, but it's WAY overpriced and overhyped. There is nothing special about this Mexican food.

We had high expectations of the place because it was not recommended, the food was delicious, it hurts the experience and that is what makes everything, I would not return nor recommend it for the simple reason that the one who attended us was very rude, he was not very friendly.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely amazing.
If you don't have a few margaritas you are missing half the experience.

We had lunch here before our 2pm show at Cadillac Palace theater. The food was displayed appealingly. The individual sampler dish offered different items with its own tastes-very enjoyable experience.Wish we had more time to explore all the art pieces on the walls in the dining areas. That itself would be worth the visit!
