This was an excellent brunch spot in a nice hotel.
We had 3 adults and 1 kid in a spacious booth. Our servers were excellent - all helping each other bring items out and taking things away. I had the eggs in purgatory (baked eggs, tomato sauce, onions, olives, capers, thyme, parmigiano) which was delicious! Not super filling but packed a ton of flavor. Others in my party had the blueberry pancakes, egg sandwich, and eggs a la Gemma. We opted for their smoothies and these were delicious as well. We all enjoyed our meals but what really stood out was the amazing service. Prices are on the higher side but what did you expect in this area? Would definitely come back while visiting NYC.

I enjoyed a delightful dinner celebrating my friend's birthday. The Arancini and Burrata appetizers were incredibly delicious, highly recommended. My Cacio E Pepe pasta entree was very satisfying, and everyone at the table enjoyed their meals. I opted for the Gelato with espresso pour-over for dessert, and it was absolutely exquisite! The service was excellent, and the restaurant exuded a charming rustic Italian ambiance. I look forward to returning!

The food was great, would definitely come again. The staff were also amazing! Thanks for the experience: )

My family and I really enjoyed this restaurant over the holiday. The ambience is so warm, cozy old fashion but inviting. We ordered 3 different styles of pizzas as appetizers the flavor was so juicy but yet nice smoky crunchy crust. A few of us ordered there bolognese pasta. All we said was WOW! All the servers were very attentive and they work as a team which is nice. We would definitely visit again and recommend to check out. It's great for a nice first date or cozy night out.
Be the first to ReplyOur dinner at Gemma was spectacular.
Great food, decent sized portions (and definitely recommend splitting a pizza), expansive bar area, and warm ambiance. It was chic and cozy at the same time. Perfect for date night or gathering with friends, but would highly recommend making a reservation in advance. We visited on a Saturday night and it was packed. With so many other options in the area, this was definitely a good sign of a great experience to come. Loved how "on-brand" everything was - from the menu, to the glass water bottles, sugar packets for your after dinner espresso, and on the receipts. All Gemma everything!

Food and service was really good! The servers were definitely hands on and made sure we had everything we needed.

Great food and service! Went to a relative's baby shower there in their party room and had a fabulous time! Shout out to Mike, Monica, and Giselle for all their kind efforts in coordinating prior to event. The staff members were very responsive and accommodating. Gotta say their burrata was the best ever. Fritattas were delicious also. All the other food excellent. Highly recommend and would love to go back there again!

My boyfriend had his birthday dinner here recently and it was great! We had some really good drinks and the Tuna Tartare was a delicious appetizer that most of us ordered and loved. I had the seafood Paella which was really really good and everyone seemed to really enjoy their dishes. The service was decent and nice but nothing special. Nothing went wrong and they were very nice but they weren't as attentive as I would want. The restaurant itself has a lot of wood and welt very warm and cozy but the style was not my favorite. Overall this place has really good food but I'm not rushing to go here again.

First time at Gemma and definitely won't be the last I like to consider myself a tiramisu connoisseur and Gemma has one of the most delicious tiramisu and dessert menu in NYC. I love the ambiance and the indoor seating feels like I'm in a old Italian movie.
Be the first to ReplySpacious, inviting interior.
The menu is well executed. Pappardelle and cornish hen is a very satisfying double for $60. However, at this price point, service also needs to be high end, and I found it to be pretty much bare minimum with the waiter stretched very thin.

Great experience for Italian food lovers! The servers are friendly, attentive, and not overbearing. The ambiance is very romantic. The food is spectacular. I had a bietole primi lunch salad and my partner had oysters. Both plates were delicious and fresh. The chefs are accommodating if you want to add or remove anything to your meal. For dessert, I had tiramisu and chocolate cake. The tiramisu comes in a big portion that is sharable between 2-4 people, in my opinion. I preferred the chocolate cake. It was to die for! Very moist, and succulent, and will satisfy your sweet tooth (maybe a little too much). It was not overbearingly sweet and the taste of dark chocolate was very well retained in the cake.

The restaurant is beautiful and it had been a WHILE since I'd eaten a steak cooked to perfection. It was melt in your mouth delicious and I haven't stopped thinking about it since we ate there on January 7th. The drink was delicious, as was the calamari. Definitely coming back here next time I'm in New York. Wow.
Be the first to ReplyThe menu has changed and limited a lot over the years.
But will never loose my love for gemma. Rip chocolate molten lava cake!!! Great location and service. Perfect brunch place and ambiance. But please re-expand your menu.
Be the first to ReplyJust another mediocre NYC Italian restaurant.
Food was too pedestrian for the steep pricing. In regards to the ambiance and staff -- the vibe of the restaurant was unwelcoming. Too bright inside, tables are arranged in a confusing way. Diminutive walking room in dining area. Hostess was polite, but a little clueless. Gave us a table that wasn't cleaned off properly and had us wait until it was cleaned. Made us stand in the middle of the dining room while it was being cleaned off which felt very cafeteria-esque and weird for a high end restaurant. Waited for ten minutes, manager came and told us to wait by the front. Manager was curt and rude. After hearing the manager speak, I started walking out the door, but the table was ready right then so we just sat down -- mistake on my part for staying. Waiter was okay, but was always in a rush and forgot some things we asked for. Drinks were flat, whatever. Fritto Misto was too heavy and oily. Cacio e Pepe and Pappardelle were simply "ok." Took thirty minutes to receive our card back after paying the bill for some reason. I wouldn't come again, but seems like other people enjoy this restaurant. Maybe New Yorkers have a lower standard for their food than us Californians do.

Food: 5/5 | Service: 5/5 | Experience: 5/5Came here around 10pm after dinner for some drinks. Sat at the bar and ordered drinks and dessert. The bar tenders were very tentative and knowledgeable; ordering drinks with a full bar was not difficult at all. It was quite late, but they gave us all a warning before the kitchen and bar closed. The tartufo dessert was very simple and light, but very well done. What we ordered:* gin and tonic* espresso martini* tartufo (dessert) - vanilla gelato with a hard chocolate shell and some fruitThings to know: * bar seating available; first come, first serve* kitchen and main bar close at 12am; bar in the back closes at 4am
Be the first to ReplyThe place is nicely decorated on inside and very spacious.
However I felt as a group of 4 people we were pretty tight and too close to other tables. The restaurant does get packed so I can understand the bad reviews about the staff and service. Our server was actually pretty fast and kept checking on us. We had a show at 8:00 pm and reservations were for 6:45 and we got out right on time. Food was good, we ordered the pizza, which was not amazing but still good. The calamari was delicious and the aioli sauce it came with was perfect! Drinks were too: ordered the Regalo Verde and Negroni besides other drinks- they were good as well!

Lots of tables empty tables outside but claimed they had no availability! We are staying at their hotel next door The Bowery, shut service.

The worst customer service I have ever experienced. However the drink we both ordered were delicious.

We stopped here because we didn't want to keep walking and the ambiance seemed nice and the restaurant was full so we were hopeful it was a hidden gem. Burrata pizza was good but was cold. The restaurant is beautiful. I enjoyed the pizza but not sure why it was cold.

Beautiful restaurant, great drinks, solid appetizers, and hospitable staff.I recently came here for a birthday dinner and had a party of 9. They were able to accommodate us perfectly, and even let us bring our own cheesecake to celebrate! The appetizers were better than the mains, and though the portion size was extremely small for everything, the food was decent! ย Favorite items were the arancini rice balls, the burrata, and the pappardelle.

I loved this place 10 years ago when they were new and popular; it's not the same now but still a good place for a bite - 3.5 stars for food and 4 stars for decor - might need a refresher after being around for 10+years though.
Be the first to ReplyGiven the saturation of great Italian food in NY, it seems
Given the saturation of great Italian food in NY, it seems easy to pass on a hotel (#1) restaurant like Gemma. It's been a fixture in the East Village dining scene, which has steadily maintained a reputation for decent (#2) food in a fairly nice ambiance.Even prior to the pandemic, their outdoor dining setup was one of the more popular destinations for the urban al fresco feel. However with the addition of the cover and expanded space, it's become that and more. Not enough credit is given to the interior, which does a good job at capturing the rustic, intimate vibes with a bit of old world Italia. It can feel cramped at times, despite the ample group table options, so I would stick to small'ish parties when at all possible. The food varies from average to solid overall. I've always felt their selection of pastas were the biggest winners, in particular the cacio e pepe or gnocchi in truffle cream. Their polenta fries, pappardelle bolognese are also a hit and I think highly of their octopus when available. However, despite the popularity of their brunch, I can't help but find it unmemorable. The same also applies to their pizzas and most of ย their appetizers. As always, the service varies. I've had some excellent experiences during their dinner and some subpar ones during the brunch. It's not enough to dissuade me from ever coming back of course, but I am glad they've remained active and relevant after all of these years._____________(#1) The Bowery Hotel(#2) But not great.

My husband and I went last night for our fourth wedding anniversary celebration. We love the Bowery Hotel, and Gemma is a gorgeous extension of a beautiful hotel. The space is full of interesting things to look at without being overwhelming or tacky. Service was prompt and courteous. We ordered the burrata to start, which was delicious. I could have made a meal out of that alone it was so good. I then had the malfatti which was so rich I almost couldn't finish is, but in a good way. It was decent and filling. My husband ordered the pappardelle, and while I didn't personally try it, he was raving about it the entire meal. We were too full for desert, but we'll definitely be back and hope to try some on our next visit.
Be the first to ReplyWent to Gemma yesterday for dinner.
We ordered the cacio e pepe and the prosciutto pizza. The food was just average. The flavor of the pasta was good, but the pasta itself was rubbery and didn't feel like it was freshly made. The pizza was also just okay, the dough was more like a flatbread than a pizza. The service was also just okay, but five stars for the ambience.
