Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura Tokyo Chuo City Reviews from The Last Year
Worth another visit
Something was just not quite right. Maybe it was our expectations going in but the consensus was a bit too low key and very uncomfortable seats distracted from the cuisine and service. The best menu item we had was the Modena (tortellini). Added to the two course option and we were overstuffed. The one item I really did not like was the the Purple corn Tostada. Service was very good. They were flexible in terms of the tasting menus and ordering. Wine list had excellent options across price range.
Amazing experience 10/10
Seeing all of the negative reviews for this restaurant are so confusing. The food was delicious, inspired and unique with familiar flavors and troupes but presented in a new and exciting way that reflects the lens that the Mexican and Japanese head chefs view the world of cuisine (We opted for the ‘our new memories’ tasting menu). Additionally, the wait staff was friendly, funny, informative and doted on us. The negative reviews seem to be written from a place of ignorance, in that the people did not know what they were getting into, and it appears they really just wanted pizza and pasta, which this place is distinctly not. I will spare you pictures and item descriptions to prevent spoilers, but definitely go if you’re excited by Michelin quality tasting menus that will challenge your conceptions of typical regional cuisines.
Experience below expectations, in terms of quality and service.
On Monday 6 May my friend and I had lunch at Massimo Bottura's Gucci osteria. Perhaps we left home with many expectations. Too many. We call a few days before to make the reservation, where we indicate that there will be a small puppy with us. They tell us that there are no problems and that they would have given us a suitable table to be safe with our puppy. Well. Reservation at 1.30 pm we arrive and they kindly seat us. Happy to be ready to live this high-level culinary experience, they begin to bring us drink menus asking us if we wanted a welcome one in this case. We accept. Given the list, and our incomplete knowledge of all the ingredients of the cocktails, we asked the waiter who would have served us for the entire service, for further clarification. Also, when my friend asks for the ingredient of one of the cocktails, the waiter, with a resentful look, says: how come you don't know this type of Gin? “Given that they didn't know this type of Gin, but then is that an answer to give”? I repeat Gucci tavern. Not McDonald's. The cocktail €20. Not €3. At these levels I require the waiter to tell me every single ingredient, including its origin. I'm on a journey, inside this restaurant. Otherwise I repeat, there is Mc Donald. In all of this they didn't even offer or ask us for water for the dog, in a bowl. At Cartier, 2 hours later as soon as we entered they asked us if they could offer water to the dog. To the dog I repeat. Alright. Let's continue with lunch. The same waiter explains to us in computer mode, with zero empathy, the menu and how the various options of the so-and-so work. We don't understand each other very well at first glance. We have him explain it again and, still in computer mode, with his gaze looking into space and with us in his eyes, he tells us how it works. We choose and order. In the meantime, I especially look around to scrutinize the place and better see the beauty around me. I didn't particularly love the basil green paint on the window frames, but of course that's the taste. I notice, however, that two waiters, dressed in Gucci from head to toe, have: one with dirty trousers on the thigh and the other with a dirty jacket. Maybe I'm exaggerating, it could have been an inconvenience in the kitchen. But at these levels it shouldn't happen. Furthermore, while waiting I look at the table, wonderful, with snake-like feet, wonderful dark wood, enchanting. I feel like lifting the tablecloth because I felt that the table was soft, and in fact there was a fabric table cover. Too bad it was stained, dirty, this thing weirds me out, because I say to myself: well they put the clean tablecloth but they will change the table cover if it goes well, once a week. I didn't find this thing elegant or hygienic in the slightest. I repeat Gucci Osteria. I believe that at these levels with these names on the sign such things cannot possibly happen and instead. They bring us the dishes and for now I have to say that we are both amazed. Being in Bottura's tavern, I want to treat myself to his infamous tortellini. 40 euros per dish, but I'm not interested, I have to taste them. I get this beautiful white plate with a yellow decorated saucer, from Ginori by Gucci and... The tortellini are tiny and, ok but, they are raw. Yes, RAW. Look at the photos. They were hard, that even my friend said: what are they? The parmesan cream, very good, but the rest… I ask the waiter and he tells me that the typical dough is al dente. ?????? The al dente dough? Now I eat tortellini, but this has never happened. Off please. Let's not argue, let's thank you. We have coffee and dessert where they bring us 3 samples of various delicacies created by them. But it happens that since they had to be tasted in sequence, they plated them correctly for me and my friend incorrectly. That is, if there is a sequence that must be it, you can't be wrong about how to serve the dish to me. We pay €315 for two and we will NOT go back again. Too bad, since we live in Maremma and were in Florence, this would have been a way to then go and eat in Modena at Bottura's. But I don't think it will happen, since the desire has passed.
My best dining experience ever
Got very lucky to get a spot right at the end of lunch with no reservation. I got the chef’s tasting menu and would highly recommend. The staff was super friendly and helpful.
Expensive and challenging tasting experience
We had seen the Chef's Table episode about Massimo and wanted to experience one of his restaurants. However, if you're looking for the same food that you would find in his Modena restaurant, this is not the place. The food is delicious and unique and interesting but unless you are accustomed to the kind of food you might get at the French Laundry or other high-end Michelin restaurants and expecting a high-end "tasting experience," you may not enjoy it. The portions are small and many of the dishes taste completely different than what you would expect from their appearance. The best of the dishes was called "Journey to Modena" and was really the only tip of the hat to food you might think of as "Italian." I am glad we went once, but I would not go again.
Hard to swallow food but excellent service
The place is beautiful, lovely location and very very kind staff. However, the food was not so delicious. It looks nice in photos but the taste wasn’t within expectation. The flavors were very weird. The mix of flavors were hard to swallow. I had to eat bread to keep myself full. The banana dessert, however, was really good. I wouldn’t want to eat a meal there again but the dessert, service, design and ambiance was excellent.
Beautiful experience
We left Rome to go to Florence and have dinner in this restaurant. Excellent service, with highly trained waiters attentive to our needs. My glass never remained empty, as soon as I finished it they immediately came to refill it before I even noticed. Lots of small attentions of this kind that made us feel appreciated. We found the chef's taste bizarre at times. I don't want to be offensive but the coffee with beans was truly abominable. The location is very beautiful even if small and absolutely in line with the Gucci style. To tell the truth, even the cuisine is in line with the concept of the brand, which, as we know, in terms of combinations is certainly eccentric and does not always turn out well. This also applies to the cuisine we found. Excellent wine pairing. However, the cuisine is of the highest quality, perhaps the taste is subjective as we are not used to certain combinations coming from Mexico. A note of merit goes to the chamomile and lavender cocktail. Spectacular, I would have liked to continue drinking it forever.
Not So Friendly Restaurant
I booked a reservation for party of 8 people for lunch on March 30. I received an email the night before stating that there was some issues with the private room and they have to put us in the main dining room, which is not an issue. Upon arrival, we were split into two tables, which is not an issue either. Since we never dine at this restaurant before, we needed additional explanation on the menu as they were all in Italian. We had a difficult time understanding what the dishes are. However, the server did not seem very professional nor friendly in explaining the menu. We asked about the a la carte menu and he said it's not available at this restaurant but available at the Gucci Bistro, which is next door. We asked if we can go to the Gucci Bistro, he said it's not an issue. My daughter asked again if they will have a table for 8 people and he said it's fine. We walked over to the Gucci Bistro but they cannot accommodate party of 8. The server just left without saying a word to us. We were stranded - left standing outside the Gucci Bistro and not knowing what to do. I understand this restaurant is a Michelin Star but I don't believe the restaurant has a good reputation in attending to the customer's needs. It's almost a disgrace to the Michelin Star rating as "service" is another important element in the restaurant business. I did email Gucci Osteria and they did apologize for the mishap and offered us free tickets to the Gucci Museum. I replied back yes I would like the tickets but by the time they got around to it, it was very late on an Easter Sunday.
Perfect dinner
Truly a great experience! To repeat!. Super friendly service and all excellent dishes. Even the famous tortellini with parmesan cream in a gluten-free version! Extensive wine list as befits a restaurant of this level but with slightly high mark-ups. We will definitely be back!
From the slightly vintage fairytale location to the innovative cuisine... a journey into the flavors of two traditions!!!!
If you think about the location designed by Gucci and the cuisine designed by Massimo Bottura it deserves the star on trust... in reality you will realize that the difference is made by the two starred chefs, husband and wife Taka and Karime and their different origins in a perfect balance of flavours. . some dishes have become iconic such as the tostada .. Gucci osteria does not disappoint and surprises with every course .. the dining room staff is kind and knowledgeable .. all in the setting of Piazza della Signoria with a view of Palazzo Vecchio .. super recommended !! !
Nice location and tasty dishes.
Opted for a 7 course lunch, delicious creative dishes and delicious wine. Staff is very friendly and well informed about what is served.
BAD EXPERIENCE
Unfortunately, the expectations, which were really high, did not satisfy our experience. After the first course we asked for the bill and left. Very kind and helpful staff. The coffee with the beans inside was not to our liking. Sin.
TOP cuisine, mediocre service
I was in this beautiful place on a Tuesday evening; I would say the room had a filling rate of 60%. Taken the suovenir with 7 courses and matching wines. The dishes, a discovery. Good, well balanced and which followed each other well. I was expecting something more refined such as porcelain, cutlery and especially glasses. The service, cheesy. Being sponsored by GUCCI certainly has its reasons.
Something you don't expect from Florence
Despite the hesitation due to the particularity of the dishes, certainly not typical of the area, @gucciosteria in Florence was a pleasant revelation. In fact, it is a cuisine strongly influenced by the Mexican culture of chef @karylmt and her husband @championtaka._ of Japanese origin. The two, together with the collaboration of @massimobottura who guarantees the excellence of the place, have managed to create a perfect union between two totally discordant culinary cultures. The flavors of the Far East and Latin America come together to create something unique, balanced and surprisingly pleasant. The place is rather simple without too many frills, but the service was excellent and the final result is without a doubt worthy of a star @michelinguide.
