Food: ordered the aloo chaat, tandoori masala lamb chops, chicken butter masala, and the dal maharani. The chaat and the dal were both standouts, with amazing flavor and immediate comfort. The lamb chops were also good, but a few of the pieces were a bit overdone. The chicken butter masala was a heightened version of your typical butter chicken, with more complex and layered flavors and spices. For dessert, we had a selection of sorbets (coconut & lime, mango) and ice cream (South Indian filter coffee), which were incredibly refreshing. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, explaining the dishes and recommending which selections would complement each other. Highly recommend a meal here.

Honestly it used to be one of the best Indian restaurants in London. But when I tell you it has fallen off a cliff I am not exaggerating. The food was barely recognizable. We got the tasting menu and in addition to the service being slow and the waiters seeming like we were in their way, the food...oh my god I was so disappointed. The naan was burnt and the black daal that we look forward to so much tasted bland and unseasoned. Save yourself a bad evening and go to Dishoom. Much better food and service.

If I had to recommend one restaurant in London, it would be Gymkhana. Now this is my first Michelin star restaurant and the experience absolutely won me over. Starting with drinks, I went with something virgin: the Mango Ginger spritz and it was SO good I had to order it twice. My boyfriend went with the Muntjac Biryani, a game meat which happens to be a cute little miniature deer that is an invasive species haha. I couldn't, I was a Vegetarian for years before we met and I still 70% am. I went with the vegetarian tasting menu. The waiter and chef was so kind to include two servings complimentary (as per the regular one) so that my boyfriend was included in my tastings as well as a vegetarian biryani for me, so I could try his biryani. We didn't request this. They went above and beyond! My favorite dish was the paneer on the tasting menu. It was so creamy and delicious. Absolutely blew my mind! 10/10 would recommend and you must get the tasting menu! Come hungry!

Authentic Indian cuisine rivaling the traditional Indian cuisine. Ambiance and service are excellent as well.

Abdul was the most knowledgeable person regarding everything we had and more. He is such a delight it was great getting to know his story on coming to the UK and it's even better knowing Gymkhana helps students.

The food is absolutely amazing here! Service and all staff was excellent. Definitely highly recommend this restaurant to anyone once visiting London. It needs to be on your list of must try. Will visit again for sure!

We were welcomed straight away. All staff were friendly and the food was delicious.

We had a fantastic time at Gymkhana celebrating our anniversary and my husband's birthday. This is five star service and food without being Uber pretentious. Our favorite dishes included the Kid Goat Methi Keema, Chicken Butter Masala and the Pork Cheek Vindaloo. We also tried the Punjabi Samosas and Kasoori Chicken Tikka. They were also very good, but not as stand out as the top dishes. All in all - service, vibes, food and drinks were excellent. You really can't beat the price for a Michelin star meal either.

It's not every day you get to dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant let alone a Michelin-starred Indian restaurant, but in London you can do this! I elected to get lunch at Gymkhana because a) it worked for my schedule and b) they have a really great lunch menu that is considerably affordable by Michelin standards. For £44 I got a delicious multi-course meal that I sadly couldn't finish. It was so much food and I wish my hotel had a fridge/microwave as I would have wanted to take the rest with me. Lunch starts with a pappadum selection including 4 different kinds of crisps: potato and chili, lentil, rice, and wheat and fenugreek. It also has 3 different dips/spreads including a lemon pickle and yogurt raita, coriander and mint chutney, and shrimp sorpotel which is made with dried shrimp and tomato. Each of the pappadums was really delicious as were all of the spreads. I ate way to much of this LOL. You also get a generous portion of aloo chaat which was SO GOOD and I also ate way too much of it before the rest of my meal arrived. You get to select an appetizer, and I got the Goan cafreal salmon tikka with tomato chutney. It really a totally new dish for me and a really unique experience. I really loved it. The salmon was so tender and juicy and practically melted in my mouth. The tomato chutney was spicier than I expected but a really nice complement to the fish. For my main course I chose the chicken butter masala, which is perhaps the least adventurous option but a perennial favorite and one I couldn't resist. It came with dal lasooni, saag makai (saag corn), and either basmati rice or a bread basket. OMG everything was so phenomenal I can't even express in words. I was impressed by each dish and immediately made note to try and recreate some of them myself at home. Aside from the incredible food, the ambiance is really warm yet sophisticated. I love the decor. The service was fantastic. Not only was my server on point, but the hostess and I am guessing one of the managers who was up by the hostess stand were very friendly and chatted with me after my meal and asked me where I was from and talked about my meal and other plans in London. Even the bartender was extremely friendly and vocal even though I was only walking by the bar to head to the bathroom. I felt truly welcome and never felt like it was a stuffy or stuck-up kind of place. If you love Indian food, you absolutely must put Gymkhana on your list for restaurants to try in London. You won't be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyThe staff at the Donovan Bar at the Brown's Hotel
The staff at the Donovan Bar at the Brown's Hotel recommended Gymkhana to us. I was excited as I didn't realize that Gymkhana was just down the street. I have been killing it with Gymkhana's chicken butter masala recipe from The Guardian and wanted to try the original!!!It was early evening (5:00) on a Tuesday in March. The hostess at the front of the house informed us that they were booked for the evening. Upon inquiring about a table anytime that week for lunch or dinner we were informed, rather rudely, that they were "very busy and booked for the next three months". We were very disappointed...Upon returning to our room, I cruised Gymkhana's website and saw that tables were available for lunch and dinner that week. I was so annoyed that I didn't bother to book one and doubt that I ever will.
Be the first to ReplyI had been waiting to come here for my next trip to London.
I was not disappointed. We decide do the Feast downstairs in the private room. Easily it fit 6 and had room for 2-3 more. Food was outstanding and the service. We had a mixture of the meat and the vegetarian feast. Spice level was superb as well. The prawns were fantastic. Do not miss out on the wine, they have any amazing Schist Chenin Blanc which paired perfect.
Be the first to ReplyGymkhana has the best Indian food I've had in my entire
Gymkhana has the best Indian food I've had in my entire life. We did the fixed course menu to get a taste of a bunch of different plates, so much food. The biryani, butter chicken, and saag was mouthwatering. Was way more food than a usual prix fixe menu, we ended up taking some to go. The service was attentive and the space was so chic. Definitely worth the splurge and is one of the better Michelin star places I've been to.
Be the first to ReplyAfter trying Indian food all over the world, and all over
After trying Indian food all over the world, and all over london as well Gymkhana has blown me away. Easily one of the top 3 restaurants I have ever been to in my life. The inside decor is absolutely beautiful. The service was absolutely incredible. The food was amazing! Very spicy if you ask for it spicy, which I absolutely loved. The lamb chops were so tender and juicy some of the best I've ever had. The chicken tikka masala and daal were incredible. We also got kebabs, pani puri and a lamb shank type dish. The naans were super buttery, garlicky and crispy. I absolutely loved this entire experience. I hope one day they bring this to New York as well.
Be the first to ReplyThis was the best place I ate at in London.
Hands down. I browse the Michelin Guide, and it has a lot of good restaurants, but let's face it, the large majority of it are the same stuff, or Japanese. But I digress. I see this foreign city, I see Indian food, I see 1 Michelin Star, and I go full steam ahead. The restaurant itself is beautiful. It feels like you're walking into like a 70's disco club. Amber lighting, warm wood everywhere, including on the wall, red vinyl booths, it was just very nice. Felt like I was in a movie. We got lead to our table in the downstairs area, which was really cool. The main reason I chose this place was because it offers a tasting menu, with options for each of the courses. That way you can show up with someone and try to many things. I think the menu changes periodically, so I will just post the menu I had that night, and go over the highlights, because I don't want to waste your time with every single thing I ate. Pappadum Selection, Shrimp Sorptel & Nimbu Achari Raita. This was the super fun appetizer course. We didn't get an option here. We just got this, and thank goodness, because it was a good intro of sauces and flavors and textures and it introduces the idea of the interactive nature of Indian cuisine. A lot of fun, and very delicious. Aloo Chaat, Tamarind, Sev. This was amazing. I got introduced to chaat here, which is like a whole new course of food options that's apparently big in India. And wow. Now I'm obsessed. So flavorful and crunchy and fun. AND it got topped with sev, which is another new favorite thing of mine. It was like eating a bowl of delicious, fuzzy, crispy love. Get this. Kid Goat Methi Keema, Salli, Pao. Another fun one! Imagine like goat sloppy joe with two slider rolls there, so you can make your own little sandwiches or open-face sandwiches. Then there's some onion and a pepper so you can customize your flavors. Delicious. I love goat. Get this. Wild Muntjac, Biryani, Pomegranate & Mint Raita. The Main Event! If you haven't had biryani before, you NEED to. It's like Indian fried rice, but a million times better, not kidding. Very saffron-y. And it was served inside of a puff pastry that they cut open for you right at tableside and expose you to a huge whiff of love. And, it was my first time trying muntjac, which is delicious. Unfortunately cute, but delicious. Saffron Pistachio Kulfi Falooda. Dessert! I love exploring deeper into new cuisines, because you see things you've never seen before. And this is a new dessert that I've never seen before! It was wild! It was sweet, and fruity, and yogurt-like, and jelly-like, and texturally varied. It was fresh and delicious and beautiful and fun. Overall, this was a wild night for me. I encountered new things, and my world was opened up a little bit more. If you are visiting London, or if you live in London, you NEED to come here.
Be the first to ReplyReally good tasting menu, the wine tasting wasn't good.
The service and food was good but like I said the wine tasting wasn't good and to sweet.
Be the first to ReplyThis 1 Michelin-starred restaurant was recommended by a
This 1 Michelin-starred restaurant was recommended by a friend/co-worker who had just came to London maybe 3-4 weeks prior to my visit. I had asked him for an Indian restaurant recommendation and he said this place. I had made reservations for 0930P on a Sunday evening about 3 weeks prior to visit. We had been roaming around London all day, essentially walked across from the Tower Bridge, and had arrived maybe 2 hours prior to reservation. Had tried asking the 2 female hostesses if there were any earlier available times and was told no. We had returned back to our hotel to rest before coming back to the restaurant for the original reservation time. Upon return, it was a male host at the counter. Said to give him a few minutes to have the table ready. We had went back outside to wait and no one had notified the table was ready until one of us had went in to ask. I had noticed a coat checking service available to others but we were never offered it but was fine with having our coats next to us (i guess). The same male host was the waiter and was never giving us the attention I'd expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant. During the entire time of ordering or asking questions, his eyes/head were turned elsewhere and paying attention to others, but we had eventually ordered.KID GOAT METHI KEEMA, SALLI, PAO (+2 extra pao £1/ea) This dish is a minced goat meat with dinner roll looking Pao, for you to make these mini sliders with. The methi keema is nicely seasoned, topped with the minced shallots, and a little spritz of lemon makes it a nice starter to the meal. Each order comes with 2 Pao, waiter recommended to get 2 more so everyone has 1. PATIALA FRIED CHICKEN, IMLI & MINTThis was recommended by my friend. HEAVILY spiced boneless fried chicken. Not everyone in my party liked this dish. The fried chicken is topped with a TON of different seeds/spices. Delicious nonethelessLASOONI WILD TIGER PRAWNS, RED PEPPER CHUTNEY (+1 extra tiger prawn £8.60)Large grilled wild Tiger prawns with a nice red pepper chutney topped with chives. This dish comes with 3 Tiger prawns, also another recommendation by waiter to add an extra so everyone has 1. Delicious, simply grilled tiger prawns. Can eat with or without that chutney. The red pepper chutney is creamy but mild. TANDOORI CHICKEN, INDIAN ONION SALAD, WALNUT CHUTNEY Essentially half a chicken, marinated and cooked in a tandoor oven. Lots of meat. Very flavorful seasoning. The Indian onion salad is fresh, helping cut through the marinade. WILD MUNTJAC BIRYANI, POMEGRANATE & MINT RAITAThis was something we saw a lot of other tables had ordered so we had to order it too. Muntjac, per google, is barking deer or rib-faced deer. A mixed rice dish with various spices in a clay? pot, topped with a super flaky pastry (kind of like what you get in like a French onion soup). Flavorful but quite mild compared to the other dishes so farPORK CHEEK VINDALOOProbably the spiciest of the dishes we had ordered. A curry dish with braised pork cheek. Sadly pork cheek was braised, lost the fattiness and the meat's texture but this was great mixed with the previously mentioned biryani. BREAD BASKET (£12) - 2 different naan's, one thinner, crispier and one thicker/breadier. Good for mopping up some vindaloo or eat with leftover methi keema (which i definitely did, cant waste good food)Unfortunately I am NOT a fan of gin, which they had a diverse drink menu for, so we got 3 Cobra Lager (4.8%) beer's served in a thick, chilled metal cup. Would have preferred a bigger cup (hah) but oh well. The food overall was great. Each and every dish was delicious in its own way (or together). Service, unfortunately, definitely not anywhere near what I expected from a Michelin-starred restaurant. Very non-attentive.
Be the first to ReplyWe did not get the hype here.
We went here on our first trip to London but could've easily skipped it. The food was average at best. Service was fine. The saffron cocktail was the only item I tried that I would get again.
Be the first to ReplyThe food does look and taste like luxurious authentic
The food does look and taste like luxurious authentic Indian cuisine. However, it's so salty. The saltiness in the tikka chicken and butter chicken was overwhelming to the point we couldn't enjoy it. I don't know if it is just our personal taste, but if you feel like your family doesn't like salty food...you won't enjoy it here. The staff and ambiance is great...it's just the saltiness of the food that we couldn't handle.
Be the first to ReplyDishonest reservation system.
...came on a later date (because they can't handle Walk-ins on a slow night), and got food poisoning. Gross.
Be the first to ReplyHIGHLY recommend the tasting menu as a vegetarian.
Their food is absolutely delicious with amazing presentation. Their staff is very friendly and helpful. Would give this place a 10/5 in terms of taste, ambiance, service.
Be the first to ReplyFlavorful and fun food, amazing customer service and true
Flavorful and fun food, amazing customer service and true fine dining experience. Really enjoyed the rose tea as well. Extensive cocktail and drinks menu as well!
Be the first to ReplySimply outstanding in every respect.
Top notch food and service. Knowledgeable staff - not just the server, but literally everyone we encountered. Friendly and efficient, superlative. No wonder it's a Must on everyone's list - you can't miss with this place!
Be the first to ReplyBest food we ate in London.
We ordered a meat tasting menu and the spices and the flavors... my mouth is watering just remembering how delicious it was. Definitely coming back next time we are in London. I am surprised to see people give less than 5 stars. This place serves amazing food!
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful experience at Gymkhana- the renovations post-fire
Beautiful experience at Gymkhana- the renovations post-fire are gorgeous and welcoming. As for the food- while everything was delicious- the appetizers definitely ranked higher than the mains in my opinion. My overall favorites were the aloo chat, lasooni prawns, paneer tikka, and bhindi (super crispy, can be hard to find restaurants that prepare it this way)
