😍 5/5 - Hama has always been our favorite Japanese sushi restaurant

Hama has always been our favorite Japanese sushi restaurant in Midtown/5th Avenue/Rockefeller Center area. Sure there's a lot of other Japanese sushi restaurants in the area, even Michelin-starred, but the prices are so exorbitant, I'd be too stressed to enjoy the food. At Hama the food is delicious, the atmosphere is relaxing and the prices are reasonable. And did I mention already that it's right across the street from Rockefeller Center and just around the corner from the best 5th Avenue window shopping? No matter how often we visit, we always discover dishes we haven't tried before that become our favorites. Currently the warm mushroom salad is our must-order. We feel healthy because we're eating greens, but these lettuce leaves have been blissfully wilted by warm button, shiitake and oyster mushroom with sesame mustard butter sauce. There's a little crunch from the rice paper crisps that garnish the salad. The Shrimp and Vegetable tempura entree portion is very generous and filling. The tempura is lightly battered and not oily. We once plunked down $700 for dinner at the famed Ten-ichi Tempura in Tokyo. Although Hama is a little chintzy with the grated radish and already mix it into the dipping sauce before bringing it to the table, I honestly prefer the tempura at Hama! My husband usually picks out different sushi rolls, classic and more adventurous combos. This time I picked the rolls (Special California topped with scallop and dotted with yuzu ponzu mayo; Philadelphia salmon, avocado and cream cheese is a classic! And Rock Shrimp tempura sushi. We loved them so much we're going to order the same rolls (and salad and tempura) on our next visit! One request to put this restaurant over the top - It would be even more heavenly if Hama added Echigo rice beer to their drink menu!
