I finally visited Harry's Bar. I could give it 1 star or 5, depending on the perspective. On the one hand, it's an overpriced tourist trap trading off past glories of famous people whose experience of the establishment was probably different to ours today. On the other, it is located where it is located in the city called Venice, so they have a certain license to "enhance" their prices. That said, I still believe they charge far too much for what ends up on the plate or in the glass. My companion and I sat upstairs, and soon fell into people watching people watching us. We ordered a Bellini and a Montgomery. I had to remind the staff that that drinks were taking their time, twice, and they finally arrived with our food. Both drinks were well made and exquisite. However, the Bellini could have been more generous and the Montgomery could have been served in a more elegant glass than a non-descript old fashioned glass. I don't think they're worth 22 euros each, but then again I've paid the same at the American Bar at the Savoy in London: it goes with the territory. The two main dishes we ordered were above average, but most other establishments would not warrant the price of 65 and 75 euros respectively. The most "cost-effective" way to see Harry's Bar would be to wait until Covid restrictions lift and just try and walk in and take a look around withour ordering a thing. Failing that, order a cocktail, take it all in, and exit. But for fans of Hemingway and all others who engaged in revelry here and unwittingly provided the current management with the cheek to charge what they do, the only way is to take the plunge and try to enjoy the experience. I'm glad I went, but I won't be back.
