Herb & Wood San Diego Reviews from The Last Year

This restaurant hit the trifecta! Excellent service, delicious food and stellar ambience. Our server, Justin was very attentive and gave great recommendations throughout our dining experience. We really enjoyed the gnocchi, mushroom, hamachi and Branzino. We will be back!!!

For a dinner app, the oysters and bone marrow were a hit at the table. We sopped up all the juices with the bread! The carrots were good, and the whole table ordered the branzino, and we were all very pleased. Fast forward 2 years, and I booked Mothers Day Brunch, here. Justin provided wonderful, attentive service, and the menu was pretty set. The Lemon Blueberry pastry was delicious, great balance of sweet, tart, and a crispy crust enveloping the cooked down lemon berry custard (almost). Apps-wise, we chose the crab cake and the pork belly. The pork belly won, with flavor and texture. Crispy on top, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth on the bottom. The crab cake just didn't taste as fresh as I usually like. I enjoyed my chimmichurri filet and eggs, over the hubs' shrimp and grits, as the chili butter left too much spice residue in the back of my throat to appreciate. The texture was good, but hubs also agreed that it was very rich and heavy. Overall, it was a nice experience. Everything came with a side of roasted potatoes and fruit, which were both really delightful! Crispy, well-seasoned potatoes, and a fresh, sweet assortment of fruit.
This place is amazing! The ambiance is nice and spacious
This place is amazing! The ambiance is nice and spacious with very comfortable chairs. The staff amazing! They made me feel like a queen. I wish I remembered my waiter's name because he was so nice! He helped me pair my entree with my wine, picked my appetizer and my dessert. I'm so glad I listened to him. Everything had the right amount of butter, salt, acid and seasonings. I ordered the pork and I didn't know you could make pork taste so good. The hush puppies for dessert are to die for! I'd go back just to eat those! I can't wait to go back again!
OK, immediately upon entering the restaurant, it does look
OK, immediately upon entering the restaurant, it does look nice, but everything is white washed and sitting on the metal chair does not scream fancy dining to me at all. Whoever said this was the most romantic dining experience in San Diego has lost their marbles. The place is extremely loud at all times Not much for quiet dining. I would presume weekends are the worse. What can I say about the food? Definitely overpriced for what you get. Went home hungry after spending well over a hundred dollars We ordered the PORK BELLY appetizer priced @ $21.97 and well 6 pieces of well cooked pork came out Most were smaller than a tablespoon. It had a mustard aïoli that completely over powered the whole dish. I couldn't taste the pork, apples or onions. Extremely disappointing for the price. In my opinion the dish would have been better served with a drizzle of the mustard or a swirl of it. But the entire bottom of the dish was mustard. Next up was the ROASTED OYSTERS AND BONE MARROW. Priced at @ $28.47 Two small bones and 6 oysters Ugh another disappointing dish. Bone marrow was ok but the bread was so buttery that it was like I had swallow a tablespoon of lard very greasy. The oysters were just the same way too much butter couldn't tell if I was eating an oyster at all. Just a salt booger in oil. Next up was the pasta. At this point, I was praying for a miracle. That somehow a dish priced at almost 40 dollars by itself would miraculously saved this date night from disaster. Oh was I wrong. The GNOCCHI coming in at the staggering price of $32.77 for 5 little dough balls that were way under cooked. I couldn't pick them up with a fork A spoon full of shredded oxtail and more parsley than anything else was utterly disgusting There was so much sherry in the sauce I could have gotten drunk on a spoonful alone. Definitely not at all impressed with it or anything at this point. So I thought to grab a glass of wine and at least try to enjoy the atmosphere Again, disappointed. The wine selection is slim to none and the waiter was clueless to any of it. So I just picked one Charged 20 dollars for not even a half glass of the most disgusting tasting red wine I assume they have a better selection at Olive Garden and haven't eaten there in years. I will definitely not be returning to this restaurant my advice for anyone else looking at this place Save your hard earned money and go somewhere else
Quite expensive but really amazing options for all.
Recommended: beet cocktail and mushroom dishes.
First time to this place Place gets very loud as it gets
First time to this place Place gets very loud as it gets pack so not the best for romantic evening though they advertise it's a romantic place settings.. Service is ok but server are not to knowledgeable about their alcohol selection and did not send a positive energy or even an advice of what could've been a good wine that maybe good to go with our meal, yet I would assumed he will expect a good percentage tip at the end like most server would.. Roasted Oysters & bone marrow appetizers price ($28.47)are very heavily soak in oil, bone marrow is good but very very oily, all oysters are very very cover with what ever it is on top & it over power the whole experience of what the oyster suppose to be,sea food.. Gnocchi in the pasta category price($32.77)is literally maybe 6 pieces of a dough like soak in some sauce, pictures of this in the website looks very nice and full of oxtail meat..not was a deceive, imagine 6 small balls of raw dough like, sitting on flat brown gravy like sauce with sooooooo much parsley, with one roasted garlic & I lied to you not,one and I mean one table Spoon of shredded oxtail meat...because I gather it and fit it in my spoon..lol.. Their bread that comes with the meal,I think I can break a window with it... So,I post this not to discourage anyone but if you wish to find out for yourself & you have money to burn pls. do so,but as a chef for many years and had worked on some of the biggest food service/restaurants doing traditional Japanese sushi & cuisine of many type to some fine dining style settings locally & working with some of the finest chef in San Diego,it's very disappointing to see & experience this kind of food for such a very very high price tag & very low quality to deliver what it sounded like being advertise...I don't plan on visiting this place again because the lack of details making good food starting from their kitchen failed to deliver..
I'd say 3.
5 stars. Service was great food tasty but the vibe and pace seemed hectic. With shared plates these were coming out fast. Almost rushed from my experience. Pricey too when compared to other locals for similar bites. Additional weird vibe just finding the entrance and the restaurant lights kept cutting out intermittently.
Great spot with great energy.
Had the Baba Gannoush, which came with fresh baked pita, and then the pork chop for dinner. Both were excellent. The pork chop was served with navy beans and a mustardo that had just the right spice and sweet combination.

Came here last Saturday for dinner with my best friend and had a great time. Our reservation was for 8:15pm and we sat around 8:30p which gave us time to grab a drink at the bar. The outside of the restaurant is so unassuming and then you walk in and it's huge! Big bar right in the middle and a lot of different seating areas. We started with the baba ganoush which I definitely recommend. It was smoked and creamy with pickled peppers on top. It all worked really well together. We also had the hamachi and the prime file mignon. Those were good as well. Hamachi was fresh and the file was cooked perfectly. My only regret was not trying one of their desserts!
Spend your money someplace else
NO. Stuck us with a surcharge they just added to the bill. Didn't even catch it until after we left. What BS. Everything else about the place was generally lackluster. Won't be going back there!
Very pretty interior
The server was attentive but wasn't really aware of his customers. He kept robustly interrupting our conversation and quite frequently too. Enjoyed the cheese appetizer, carrots and especially the mushrooms. The pork and swordfish entrees were kind of boring. Date cake dessert was fantastic! Considering the price points think that we will try elsewhere next time.
Good but not spectacular - really a 3.5 vs 4
Restaurant is loud (guests vs music) and that detracts from the ambience. Service is very good and food whilst good is not memorable. Our mains were served luke warm and they immediately offered to bring us fresh dishes which we declined as we didn’t want to wait. In lieu they brought us complimentary dessert which was very nice of them. Note they charge a 4% surcharge to fund healthcare for staff vs just running the business at a lower profit or changing your pricing which effectively is what you get with a surcharge.
Worth every penny!
All in all a great evening! We’ll start with the food. We started with an over-the-top appetizer; roasted oysters and bone marrow with crostinis. Luscious is the best adjective. For dinner, my wife had the roasted branzino, perfectly filleted, crispy and delicious. The roasted carrot side was amazing. I had the Iberico ham on cannellini beans, the kicker was the crispy pancetta. Finally, the fritters were as light as yeast doughnuts. The meal was worth every penny and more. The highlight of the evening was the fact that both Chef Brian Malarkey and Executive Chef Carlos Anthony were in the house and spent some quality time. Being Food Network junkies, it was a great treat that we will not forget.
Great food- gorgeous atmosphere - wonderful service.
Great food - gorgeous atmosphere- wonderful service. Came here with my husband, daughter and son-in-law. Service was prompt and attentive, loved the menu selections, cocktails were great. Had the Branzino which was very fresh and wrapped in a thinly sliced pork - delicious. Ordered the rolls for the table and mushrooms and carrots as sides for the table - all excellent. Highly recommend.
Okay.
We walked into a beautiful buzzy space filled with beautiful lighting and buzzy energy. Then we were immediately led to a side room that was the in-between for the restaurant and their banquet hall. We were placed in a corner with a plain wall and a fake plant to look at. While we were there, 4 other couples asked to be seated at different tables as they were shown to the same area. We watched a parade of servers entering and exiting the banquet hall. Our service was pretty good actually, but the food was just ok. We had the cheese appetizer (pretty good) the gnocchi (rubbery) and the steak with a side of potatoes (potatoes were great). But I wouldn't;t say it blew me away for the price.
Interesting menu. Great ambience.
Really great experience. Superb service. Interesting and varied menu with great execution. Would happily return to this place to explore the menu further. Really great ambience. High energy and happy.
Fabulous Dinner.
My husband and I ordered simply. We started with a few appetizers, a salad, chickpea dish finished with a shrimp dish. Service was crisp.
Great menu and food but too dark to enjoy.
This restaurant hails a wonderful menu of unusual and farm-fresh items. We were a party of five and sampled several different plates, including the venison and halibut. The trumpet mushrooms were especially tasty. In fact, everything was quite delicious. Unfortunately, it was so dark where we were sitting that we couldn’t see the menu to figure out what to order. There was just one tiny lamp for a table that sat six. The server suggested we use our cell phone flashlights. When the food arrived, we couldn’t see the plates or the plating that the chef may have taken the trouble to arrange. Too bad, as, the appearance of a dish is as important as the taste. It was also a bit on the noisy side for those who may be affected by that.
Top notch
Fantastic experience. Delicious food, every plate has a grade of creativity and unique style which makes the place super special and unforgettable. The chef Malarkey was around and has a super magnetic and positive personality - clearly reflected in his dishes. Perfect service with an outstanding barman. A place to come back for sure.
