I like bak kut teh mainly for the broth, be it peppery or herbal. I like them all. I usually do not take the meat as they are either too porky (strong taste and smell of pork which makes me barf) or too tough and chewy. So yes, I used to have bak kut teh with just the soup and rice and salted vegetables, braised peanuts and you tiao. I approached Old Street BKT without expecting much, so I was quite in awe when I realized how tender the pork ribs were. I ordered the regular pork ribs and the meat could just slide off the bones. Amazing. The meat was tender and was without any porky taste or smell. That was a win.The broth was also good though it lacked a punch. Those who do not like strong taste will prefer this. It is peppery but not overly peppery.Besides the usual dark soy sauce and sliced fresh chilies, there are many other dips you can have. Sesame, light soy sauce, chili sauce, fresh chopped garlic and others. Very interesting, almost like those hot pot DIY dips.It can get busy but the staff is very efficient. Place your order on the ipad and your cutlery are located in drawers.Sometimes it may take a while for the staff to come round to top up your soup. The set is definitely more value for money but it is quite a lot as the basket of you tiao is very generous. The bean curd is also good, silky soft smoothness. I read elsewhere the specialty is actually the dry pork ribs which I have yet to try. Maybe next time. At the moment I am glad this has opened at NEX. Perfect food for cold rainy weather.
