Excellent Waitress
My friend and I ate in Il Pirata last night The food in this restaurant is superb with flavours to match A special shout out to out waitress, Ailish, who was very attentive even remembering us from our last visit Cannot wait for our next visit
Be the first to ReplyCoeliac friendly and super delicious!
The staff were super friendly, I was given a menu that the chef had checked what I could eat safely - the kitchen is small and they canāt guarantee there is no cross contamination but I chose options which were the least likely to be risky. The food came and the gluten free dishes were visibly different which is always a positive sign! The food was amazing and super flavourful, I didnāt feel like I was missing out at all! I am coeliac and had no issues afterwards either. Would absolutely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyMains let down but otherwise lovely
Been here before with friends and came again tonight for valentines, the wine was excellent as well as the focaccia, burrata and goats cheese polenta starters. However the carbonara boccatini was not good- the pasta was chewy and gummy so an indicator of overcooked or not made properly. The chicken parmigiana was bland (boiled potentially? ). The crispy gnocchi side was lovely. Service was not good but only 2 servers for a near- full restaurant, waited 20 mins for our bill. Otherwise lovely restaurant and atmosphere- mains let it down.
Be the first to ReplyFood is nice but service was really bad
We usually come here for family and couple meals and it has never disappointed. The food was good but the service was shocking, after receiving our food the waitress (with purple hair) didn't visit our table for over an hour. Manager saw this and didn't do anything, such a shame
Be the first to ReplyTough Beef
Went here in recommendation of friends. We ordered a Sunday roast beef board for 2. Service was excellent, all the accompaniments were excellent. The best gravy ever! However, the beef was so tough we couldnāt saw our way through one of the slicesā¦ā¦ā¦absolutely dreadful beef. We may give Il Pirata one more Sunday visit to see if any improvement. Interestingly we spoke to friends who were there after us on the same day and had the roast beef and reported the same issue. Il Pirataā¦ā¦ā¦.you need to revisit your beef offering if you are to get repeat business!

Delicious I ordered lemon chicken. Sides of Parmesan fries were excellent. Nice space and staff attentive. Good atmosphere
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing food
Very disappointing. The food was pretty awful, especially considering the price. Itās probably the worst vegan meal Iāve had and my husbandās chicken wasnāt good either. I donāt usually give bad reviews but it was so bad I felt like I should.
Be the first to ReplyOh dear what have they done?
This is one our local restaurants and we have always had lovely meals. We went before going to a concert recently and we were shocked at the decline. The menu seems to be getting shorter and shorter and therefore, very limited. My husband ordered the duck Ragu with gnocchi a dish he has ordered many times before. He said the gnocchi was very wet and loose and the ragu didnāt have much flavour. I ordered the roast hake with Parma ham and caviar. The hake came out fish and one piece of grilled leek. Then a small jug of cream sauce. The Parma ham in very small pieces was in the sauce and the caviar -Iāve no idea where it was! The dish was bland. Just a nicely cooked piece of fish with a cream tasteless sauce. I gave the waiter feedback saying it was fine but bland. He apologised and came back offering free desserts. We selected one which was fine but again flavour limited. We will continue to visit for Sunday roasts but apart from that there are better places to spend your money!!!!

First time visiting, food was amazing and can definitely see why it was recommended to us by colleagues. Food alone carries this establishment.
Be the first to ReplyMenu translation issue
Visited with a friend for a weekend girls night, very lucky to get a last minute reservation. Cocktails were amazing! The menu was confusing- we dont speak italian and are pescatarian and vegetarian, so googling nearly every word on the menu to see what it meant was really annoying... We had given up googling the menu (malfatti, panelle, baccala, peperonata, trapanese and so on) We ordered ā Bresola with Fig Mostarda, Taleggio, Walnutā amongst other dishesā¦ the bresola turned out to be cured meat.. I realised after i had already taken a bite!! After 8 years of not eating any meat i was eating a cured meat covered in fig molasses **cries** ā¦ the King scallops also come with meat on top and in the butter sauce .. on closer inspection of the menu again by candle light it says underneath with ācarbonara butterā so disappointing two dishes were ruined for us, granted partly our mistake. There are no symbols on the menu indicating what is vegetarian/ vegan etc and some sort of an explanation even on the back of the menu to say what these things mean would go a long way!! Lovely service all the same. Menu needs work for non italian speakers!!

Had the opportunity to try the new menu , I had a beautiful glass of Primitivo and my other half a few pints of delicious Bierra Moretti.
We started with some of the delicious chichetti, rosemary foccia , Chorizo and chickpeas followed by Squid Ink linguine and Gnocchi Alforno as our mains perfectly cooked scallops , a light tomato based sauce with a hint of heat , perfection , the al forno blew our minds it was sweet soft gnocchi pine nuts.
We will be back.
service was as excellent as the food
Very disappointed
I had a bland pasta dish with little chicken and minuscule pieces of pancetta that swam in a watery cream soup! Not good. Wonāt be back.
Be the first to ReplyJust Average, but nice
Nice rustic looking restaurant, pleasant staff, and a good atmosphere. The food was good but not exceptional and a little over priced for the area and the type of dishes. I would go back but be more aware of the menu and it's prices.

Dined here on nye with family. Christian looked after us and was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, making nice recommendations with regards to our choices. Kids loved their colouring in and pizzas. Good menu, friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Will definitely return.

this location was suggested to me by a much loved close friend as a treat before catching a movie in The Strand.
On entering for the first time I was taken aback by how easy on the eye the place was and the congenial buzz.
Booking in online was a doddle and with that covered off I was shown straight to my table.
The menu was very exciting , so much so that I had real trouble picking a starter and main but I settled on the Squid Ink Bucatini and WOW was that the correct choice, it was incredible.
My friend and I were ably served by Alan who indulged me gushing forth about how good the place was.
Bottom line is I cannot wait to get back and start working my way through the menu.
And yes, I've told loads of my pals about this place.
Highly Recommended !
Top restaurant in east Belfast
This is the best place for scapolini and their gnocchi is excellent. They do mini pizzas for starters but I get the Gorgonzola pear salad. The houlimi is great too. You need to book well in advance if youāre looking for an Italian with an edge this is the place!

Thereās simply nothing bad to say about this restaurant , I live 50 m from its front door , Iām not there every week but when I call for a dinner booking the staff are always accommodating and of course the food speaks for itself , as close to genuine Italian as I think Belfast can offer ā¦ cannot fault food or amazing cocktails ā¦ just go !!
Be the first to ReplyTry the Squid Ink Bucatini!
What a lovely evening at Il Pirate. The staff were exceptional, the ambiance lovely and the food delicious. We had the squid ink bucatini and the seafood bucatini. The pasta was fresh and we could taste the ingredients. The scallops and prawns cooked to perfection. The squid ink bucatini was absolutely the best dish of the evening with subtle and tasty flavors with every bite! Would definitely recommend and definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyAlways amazing
As a frequent flyer to this restaurant it never disappoints. I love the decor, the music is just a vibe, i always request a specific table and get it :).
The menu is varied and changes often with seasonal produce. Small plates and starters are always so good to get you ready for your main event. One massively popular favourite is the duck ragu - it is fantastic. The cod trapanese recently added to the menu is possibly the best thing i have ever eaten.
Great wine and cocktail list, and service is friendly and attentive.
Good menu ideas, poor execution
The restaurant is quite a quirky one; it has a slightly more industrial interior, which felt clean and modern. No marks lost for this, although as a personal preference I hate cans of napkins and cutlery. It isnāt a very expensive restaurant but isnāt cheap either. I want my cutlery to be placed for me, and the napkins couldāve been better quality.
The small plates provided on the table are mismatched, and again I kind of donāt like this. I think a lot of restaurants try to pass this off as charm and quirkiness, but itās just an excuse to not have to maintain matching sets of crockery. A bit cheap.
The service wasnāt very attentive, but was friendly and helpful when you needed something. There wasnāt much checking in to make sure everyone was OK, so expect to have to flag someone down if you need something.
The food was a mixed bag, in some respects. We ordered:
Arancini
A ānduja slider
Garlic bread
The above three dishes are small plates.
We also ordered a margarita pizza and a chicken dish which comes with a buttery lemon and caper sauce and some kind of greens. We got some fries with Parmesan.
The arancini was nice, along with the accompanying sauce. The cheese wasnāt to my taste, but that was personal preference. It was hot, crispy on the outside and soft and squishy on the inside. A good arancini.
The chicken dish was quite nice, and something different to a lot of the menus around; itās not a ground breaking dish in terms of its contents but it was a dish done well and was good home comfort food.
The remainder left something to be desired.
The ānduja slider was a bit disappointing on three fronts. The patty was not very big, and didnāt cover the surface area of the bun, so it was very bready and overwhelmed by lots of rocket and the pepperonata was slightly drowned out by how much bread there was. The second issue was the patty was only moderately warm; Iām sure it was cooked fresh but it had the temperature of something that was left sitting in a hot cupboard. The third issue was, given the kind of meat it is, it was surprisingly dry. The slider, overall was not good, and quite overpriced.
The garlic bread tasted great, and was a generous portion. Unfortunately it was again not particularly warm, almost like it was sitting too long before being served to us.
The margarita pizza was good. It had a nice base, tomato sauce and mozzarella. It wasnāt as warm as one would hope, but it tasted nice. However, I couldnāt help but notice that Greenās pizza was right beside the restaurant, and for the same price could have had a pizza that was hotter and also maybe tasted nicer still.
The chips were OK. They were seemingly from frozen and I always find this incredibly lazy, particularly when charging Ā£4.50. Some restaurants Iāve been to at least pick a slightly more expensive seeming frozen chip, but some very nice restaurants do very nice hand cut chips which arenāt much different in price.
Overall I donāt doubt that the ideas for the menu are good. However it feels like the execution is slightly off. Overall, my comment would be to say it felt like a bunch of seasoned home cooks got together and tried to run a restaurant and it feels like they need to take a day off and really refine their delivery of the food.
I didnāt dislike the food, but there wasnāt any of the food which I said āthis is really deliciousā and likewise nothing beside the arancini I found worth the price. I likely wonāt return, and I wouldnāt recommend it to a friend.
