Decent but not worth a trip or the money
The introductory miso soup was thin and tasteless and the introductory salad was typical of any cheap Japanese restaurant. The regular menu is uninspiring and nothing special. In fact, the regular sushi was no better than the sushi at Whole Foods. I brought my girl friend for a nice holiday meal and was embarrassed that I had brought her. And the service was lackluster as if the waitresses were conscripts in an army. Not worth the trip or the money.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service and top notch food
5 stars! excellent service, they really went above and beyond when I accidentally forgot to ask for no wasabi. Food was amazing, some of the best sushi I’ve had outside of Japan, throughly recommend. very reasonably priced as well for such high quality.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent as ever!
My family has been going to Kanoyama pretty much since they opened the doors. After a short absence I have been back three times in the last few weeks and it has been excellent each time. The luster that I remember is brighter than ever!!
Be the first to ReplyBad Service
Went to their Omakase at the back. None of beginning Kaiseki dishes worked for me. While sushi was different and unique they were too wet. Service was terrible. The server kept moving my plate to accommodate him since I was seated at end of bar so I constantly have to move my plate to readjust so I can eat from my plate. The chef serves sushi from his hand to ours which is weird. I was asked if I was Ok with this but it’s pointless because even if he served to my plate, everyone would had touched his hand thereby contaminating my piece since he does not wash his hands btw each piece nor would that be practical. Not really sanitary way of serving sushi. We had to switch to table seats for dessert which is awkward. Lastly, I waited over half an hour for my check since server was too busy preparing for next seating. How about letting us leave first? Awful experience.

The menu has some innovative items, and the server was very helpful. The taste of the sushi, however, did not stand out and was clearly below the level I can get in Seattle restaurants that do not have any Michelin star. Perhaps it's just different to get the freshest fish in NYC.
Be the first to ReplyOmakase is Michelin Star rated, deserves TWO stars
Went to Kanoyama last night, Thursday, April 28, 2022, for the omakase. It did not disappoint. The meal was top level, the chef has lost none of his touch, if anything, he has gotten even better. the quality of the wait staff is also impressive. Yes, it is a bit on the pricey side, with sake, tax, and tip, ended up $250 per person but well worth it. Reservations are required for the omakase, only available Thurs, Fri., and Sat, nights.
Be the first to ReplyThe rare consecutive blah reviews from me
Me and the missus spent Saturday walking around Manhattan and started thinking about where to go for dinner and Japanese popped into mind. We walked from the west side across to St Mark's and up a little to Kanoyama on 2nd and 11th. It was a random choice based on "Japanese near me" on Google maps. We walked in and were seated immediately with no reservation. They took out temps at the front and we left contact tracing info. We scanned our menus and started thinking about what to order. Our waitress seemed like she didnt really know the offerings as we ordered the dozen oysters with sake combo. She initially said they didn't have the sake and may have been trying to steer us to the oysters and wine combo which was more expensive but then said they did have the sake. We also ordered a corn tempura and the Japanese cucumbers and the sashimi for 2. She came back later and said they didn't have the cucumbers either so we switched to the house made silken tofu. They brought our sake in a small bamboo bucket of ice and the oysters. The oysters were good - they served them with scallions, some shaved red stuff and a light soy mignonette (she didn't really explain the accoutrements). They then brought the corn tempura and the tofu. She did explain the tofu accompaniments - Benito flakes, scallions and ginger - and how to eat it. Then they brought the sashimi - the presentation was nice but the selection wasn't anything spectacular - lots of yellowtail, tuna, salmon and we I was expecting a little bit more - selection-wise and quantity-wise. We may have been better off ordering 2 of the sashimi deluxe. The guys did a decent job of filling our water glasses and cleaning the table but, overall, the service was average. The bill came and suggested tip amounts based on the entire bill (post-tax). Paid 190 total but was left thinking I could get more at a cheaper price and comparable sushi from my neighborhood joints. My last review was of the Union Oyster House in Boston which stunk and Kanoyama wasn't bad. Unfortunately, our last Japanese sit down dinner was Hiroki in Philly and Kanoyama isn't that.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome omakase
Kanoyama's omakase is probably one of my favorites now. Dinging one point for service and the first course, but other than that, all other aspects of the omakase were amazing. This place is really popular (for non-omakase), and hence really busy, so it makes sense that service is on the slower end. The first course was onion soup. I found that to be a strange intro to the other courses, and wasn't a big fan. But for all other courses (including dessert) and sushi, I was really impressed. The crab/uni, the perfectly seared toro, the anago, and the scallop especially stood out.

We got extra good service because I went with a good friend in the industry that supplies their alcoholic beverages. Kanoyama gets some of the very limited bottles of a special sake (100 bottles/year in the US) because they deserve it. The owner is very humble and talented. Amazing combinations in the starters using high-end truffle and other special condiments. I can’t wait to go again! As a very picky Japanese, I approve.

It was awesome: nice drinks, delicious Chiefs sushi plate, soft Shell crab and upon recommendation an appetizer made from fish liver: all of excellent quality. Our kids who are not in sushi and fish found excellent alternatives as well.
Be the first to ReplyFresh and Delicious Sushi
This is my favorite place to have a quick sushi bite in the East Village area. The menu is super comprehensive, the servers are super efficient and—most importantly—the fish is super fresh. The chefs prepare the rolls in the main dining area, which is always a treat to watch. Be sure to call ahead a time to reserve a spot, especially if you plan on going for a dinner sitting. Naturally, it gets very packed very quickly.
Be the first to ReplyGreat value for money
Really great value for money! The food is very, very good, and the prices are reasonable for a Japanease restaurant. Skip the shrimp tempura uramakis, they are just not good, everything else we had was great.
