Bland and expensive
I had high expectations since it has two Michelin stars, but we were completely let down. The other Michelin-starred restaurants we’ve been to have been exceptional. This was quite expensive and missing flavor and somewhat boring. The duck with porridge was bland and flavorless, and the sashimi was also missing freshness and flavor. The same fish ingredients were used repeatedly—sea bream in multiple courses. I’m guessing something has happened since the rave reviews occurred? Shockingly expensive and a real let down for the amount paid and in comparison to other Michelin starred restaurants. The first 3 courses were good and the remaining ones were unfortunately duds.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic & reasonable kaiseiki. Best meal in ages!
Amazing kaiseiki meal! Quality produce and intricate prep. Was one of the best meals I’ve had in a while. The chefs were attentive and explained just enough without it being too long winded. Sashimi was super fresh and yummy. The duck dumpling was also interesting with a truffle sauce. Melts in your mouth. Recommended!
Be the first to ReplyMy first encounter with Kaiseki
This is my first trip flew out from Hong Kong since the pandemic in early 2020. My friends decided to visit Japan & Kyoto was definitely on the list. This was the first time we tried Michelin restaurants in Japan. As the group leader, I picked the renowned Kaiseki. With the assistance of the reservation platform “My Concierge Japan”, I chose Roan-Kikunoi- a 2 stars restaurant. The location is very good as it is very close to a metro station. We chose the medium price set lunch, around HK $1,000 per head. One will feel the hospitality and professional service from every staff when you stepped inside. My group members were all highly satisfied with the food quality and service. The restaurant provided a nicely printed menu in both Japanese and English. We did not know the menu in advance & were told seasonal ingredients would be used . The staff had also explained the ingredients and cooking method of each dish. The presentation of each dish was certainly an art. If you have planned to visit Kyoto, a Kaiseki meal is a must try. Early reservation is recommended as I have faced numbers of failure before I can get a table.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive let down
I just spent 30 minutes writing a review that the Trip Advisor app deleted, so I’m not going through that again. It was full of specifics on the let downs of what was our big splurge ($300+pp) for our trip to Kyoto. Shark fin soup (seriously in this day and age?) followed by ANOTHER soup (turnip) of the exact same gelatinous consistency. Not a two star move. And a blah dessert I could have created better myself - Ice cream on a dry bite of cake. Just not great all ‘round. And no one seemed in charge - just about five people trying to figure out seemingly who was to do what. Very unsettling.. Took over two hours and we just wanted it to end. I could go on about food specifics, but for 2 stars one expects a bit of originality (not Fat Duck- level necessarily, where every dish amazes and entertains). This was just plain not impressive on either taste, creativity, or presentation/organization. But they gave us the napkins to take home.

First kaiseki experience so a lot of it was new and exciting. The chefs make a lot of effort to explain concepts behind the dish and also encourage you to eat all the delicacies even when you’re hesitant. Loved the presentation and attention to detail. My favorite was the hotpot with rice - which is challenging to eat after 13 other courses :). Having said that, a meal here is truly a feast for the senses and gives you a taste of all the Japanese seasons :)
Be the first to ReplyMichelin two stars with good food and poor service
I was surprised with the service of the restaurant which is quite rush from the beginning. We came there for lunch at 11:30am and it seemed to me that they really want to get the service done asap so that they can serve the 2nd run for lunch. It was a pity for a two star Michelin restaurant with good food but the service needs to be improved.
餐廳從一開始就很匆忙地希望讓我們儘早結束午餐,已進行下一輪客人,對於一家米其林二星餐廳,雖然食物不錯,但是服務水準真的需要大大加強。
Not too different from Kikunoi
I was expecting something more modern and 'casual' to the 'main' Kikunoi, but actually much of the menu is quite similar. This can be good or bad, depending on what you want. Having been to Kikunoi, I was wanting to try a more modern style of kaiseki but this was not really the case. On the other hand, it is very hard to get into Kikunoi these days and this is a perfectly solid alternative.
Be the first to ReplyWe had an excellent kaiseki
We had an excellent kaiseki lunch at Kikunoi Roan during our Dec trip in Kyoto. Service is friendly and we really enjoyed both the food and the experience. We will definitely be back here
In our next visit to Kyoto.
Michelin Starred Kaiseki
We wanted to try kaiseki cuisine. This restaurant was highly recommended. It required reservations and a decision in advance as to which fixed price menu we were choosing (although we couldn't really tell what we were choosing between other than price as they all had the same number of courses). We rolled the dice and chose a meal that sounded crazily expensive, but figured that this was likely to be our first and last visit to this restaurant as this was probably our first and last visit to Kyoto. It more than lived up to the hype. We were a party of 3 and had a private room. The service was outstanding. The food was creative, absolutely beautiful and delicious. Among the best dining experiences I've ever had (and I've enjoyed many Michelin star meals over the years).
Be the first to ReplyYou must try!
One of the popular keizeki restaurant in Kyoto. Quiet difficult to book. You have to make a reservation days in advance or even months in high season if you have specific date in mind. They offer a set menu for lunch and dinner like set a or b or c. All set should comoprise of at least: 1) Sakizuke, an appetizer served with sake 2) Nimono, a simmered dish 3) Mukozuke, a sashimi dish 4) Hassun, an expression of the season 5) Yakimono, a grilled course and 6) Hanmono or shokuji, a rice dish.
The more expensive the more extensive the menu is. Each dish I ask at the time of making reservation whether there are any kind of food you dislike or are allergic to. I couldn't tell what is what in each dish so I would include a picture of menu set here. Worth a try though a little pricy.
Excellent staff and service. Locate near Gion district. Not difficult to find a Google map would take you there.
Truly outstanding!
This is a Michelin star restaurant, and deserved it! I don’t after item was astounding quality and creativity.

This restaurant was absolutely amazing. We had a kaiseki dinner the night before, but this one was ten times better. Amazing food, presentation and service. Our trip was shortened by the typhoon, but I couldn't imagine a better dinner in Kyoto. Three Michelin Stars.
