We made a same-day reservation for a late dinner, and overall enjoyed the experience. The service is attentive, and the ambiance is fun and casual. We were slightly underwhelmed by the variety of dishes. We had the salad, a wide noodle dish, squid, and the pork belly. Everything was well seasoned, but all trended a bit salty and sour. Still would come back for the experience, but maybe try other dishes.

I recently visited Kin Khao in SF and had a great meal overall. We ordered the pretty hot wings, massaman curry, and octopus, all of which were tasty and well-prepared. The service was also friendly, and the wait time for a walk-in was only about 20 minutes on a weekday evening. While the price was a bit expensive for the portion sizes, the food was so delicious that I didn't even mind. I left feeling satisfied and impressed with the quality of the dishes.Overall, I would definitely recommend Kin Khao to anyone looking for delicious Thai food in SF. Just be prepared to pay a bit more for smaller portions.

..Kim Khao is the real deal. Phenomenal meal and service here. We had high expectations coming here especially with one Michelin star to its name, but boy did it deliver. Our server guided us through the menu and we ended up getting the pork cracklings, beans, noodles with tofu, braised pork, 2 lb. Dungeness crab special and black rice pudding. Everything was amazing, including the two gin cocktails we ordered. If you love Thai food, you need to eat here. Great atmosphere in a lively environment. Come hungry and with a bunch of people for the best experience.

We were thrilled to choose Kin Khao, our first Michelin-starred meal to celebrate our engagement! It was packed although we had a late 8:45 PM reservation, and we loved that it was a super casual ambiance. Now, the food:- Mushroom Hor Mok: The Curry Mousse was delicious, and paired well with the rice cakes. However, I felt the rice cakes could have had some room for improvement, as they shattered into pieces after the first bite and weren't very practical.- Khao Kan Jin: This was one of my favorite dishes of the night, which is no surprise given my fondness of blood sausage. So complex, well-balanced, and unique. We could have had a second plate of this, easily!- Plah Pla Muek: Another favorite of the night! The squid was cooked to perfection, and I loved the acidic lime sauce that kept everything oh-so-light and refreshing.- Laab Kua: The waiter warned us that this was 9/10 *Thai Spicy*, but we chose it anyways. I have an absurdly high spice tolerance (hi, I'm Korean), but this KICKED MY BUTT! It was mind-numbingly spicy, although the flavor was good. Personally though, it wasn't my favorite as I found I'm not a huge fan of the wild boar flavor, and thought the dish was a tad dry overall.I think your experience here will wildly vary depending on the dishes you order. For us, it was a unique and very memorable meal because we ordered dishes we haven't seen at other places (except the laab). However, I can see how someone would not quite understand the Michelin distinction if they only ordered things they've seen/tasted before such as khao soi or papaya salad.

Perfect intimate restaurant for lunch just outside of the Westfield shopping center. Our waiter was courteous and gave excellent recommendations for sharing around the table. We had a party of 4, and we took home a little bit of everything. The Mushroom Hor Mok is a must try, as the curry mousse has a creamy texture that I've never had before on a crispy rice cake. The papaya salad was fresh, with all the right levels of sweet and sour. Getting to try northern Thai food is a treat and the Khao Soi was spot on. The broth was rich with flavor from the chicken and shallots, adding lime juice gave the citrus note that took the dish to superb. My favorite dish was the Yaowaraj noodles due to the XO sauce, with umami from the scallop, shrimp and ham profiles in the sauce. Highly recommend coming to this unique Thai restaurant if you are in San Francisco.

Ambiance: I went in late on a Tuesday evening so the vibes were more laid back. It's located in a nook within the hotel so it can be hard to find. It's clean and modern. Very urban - fits right into San Francisco's financial district but you can still see traces of Thai culture in the small details that they have spread throughout the restaurant. Service: We had a couple of different servers but they were all really nice. They brought out some warm damp cloths when we ate the wings and an extra bowl for the bones which I highly appreciated. Pretty hot wings: Amazing. 10/10. The flavor of the sauce was unmatched. Perfectly cooked. The demonstration was also beautiful with evenly cut Thai chilis that were perfectly set in place. So yum I'm going back to have these soon. Caramelized pork belly : I don't like pork belly because of all the fat it has but the flavors in this were great I loved the variety of textures that it had. There were parts of the pork belly that were soft and some that were crispier like chicharrones which I really enjoyed. The caramelized sauce was amazing when poured over the rice. Rabbit curry: I was pretty full by the time I got to the curry but it was INCREDIBLE. My first time having rabbit did not disappoint. It was silky and buttery, a perfect combination for the flavors in the curry. Black rice pudding: Eh. The person that I went with said that it was a lot better last time they had gone and that it was their favorite dessert ever however it wasn't all that. Could've just been a bad day? There was no outstanding flavor but the texture was fun
Be the first to ReplyUnfortunately I was a bit disappointed with my experience
Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed with my experience at Kin Khao especially due to the fact that they have a Michelin Star. I will start off by saying that the staff was friendly and the overall vibe of the restaurant was modern Asian. We started off the night with the Mushroom Hor Mok which tasted like a thick curry sauce, which you spread on a rice cake. The rice cake was a bit thick though so even a generous spread of curry on it didn't do much to change the overall taste from just rice cake. The Yaowaraj Noodle dish with chicken was better and they put the spicy sauce in a dish on the side so it is worth ordering even if you don't like spicy food much. The noodle dish was filling and tasted good but it tasted much like Pad See Ew and wasn't much above and beyond what you would expect. Another thing to note is the curry dishes ranged in the $40 range and you had to order rice on top of that, which is a bit expensive for Thai food. Overall the experience wasn't bad but the food was a bit underwhelming given the price and status of the restaurant.

I went to this restaurant solely bc it has a Michelin rating and I was pretty underwhelmed. The dishes all really lacked a wow factor in my opinion. I tried the curry mousse as an appetizer and the blood sausage rice as an entree. Neither of them were anything special. Ambiance was casual and as it's located near tenderloin, the surrounding area is super run down and didn't seem very safe :( maybe I just didn't get the hype but it did not seem to deserve a Michelin rating in my option.
Be the first to ReplyI was disappointed, not authentic at all.
I feel sorry for people who have never tried authentic Thai food and this is the first place they experience it. I should've known by reading the menu that this place was not going to give me what I expected. But I wanted to give it a try since a friend made reservations. Super Americanized for sure. They couldn't even get my Thai tea right, I had to ask for creamer on the side. So sad, and this place was over priced! Spent $112 on 3 dishes. We went to another Thai restaurant that was authentic and got about 6-7 dishes and spent the same amount. Not sure how this place got a Michelin star, but I'd suggest going across the street. :)

(3.75/5) Wouldn't say there was a wow factor throughout the entire meal and some dishes were oversalted, but there were definitely a few remarkable standouts (the massaman nuea is a must!). Went with my Thai friend, who gave the thumbs up and was struck by how local some of the dishes were. Appreciate how unique some of the ingredients were - I've never seen cranberry beans served at a Thai restaurant before, much less anywhere else! The restaurant itself is pretty understated and minimalist, but in a way that feels intimate. + Mushroom Hor Mok (2.5/5) - I *really* love curry and mushrooms, so I was surprised mixing them together didn't quite hit the mark for me. I feel like all the flavors here just blended together in a way that made them indistinguishable. Sadly underwhelming. + Nam Tok Beans (3.5/5) - A bit too salty for my liking but also unexpectedly really spicy!! Super crunchy and zesty, not something I'd down at once but it became something fun for us to snack on throughout the meal. + Caramelized Pork Belly (4/5) - Simple but really tasty and tender. Again, sauce was a bit too salty but that's what the tub of rice it comes with is for ahaha - goes so well drizzled over rice. + Massaman Nuea (4.5/5) - The most memorable dish of the night - how does one make beef literally fall apart like this?! I swear I didn't even have to use my knife, or really even chew much. Will note that other Massaman curries I've had were sweeter - I could barely taste any sweetness in this one, but I think the flavor was deliciously rich regardless. + Black Rice Pudding (3.5/5) - Lots going on in this dish, like the contrasting temperatures. Reminds me of something you'd get at Meet Fresh. + Mai Mee (3/5) - Sweet and light but our drink had a loot of ice :/

Ambiance: casual dining - I'd say good for family or dining with friends. Honestly nothing too special - it was cozy and the servers were polite and nice. Food: Plah pla muek (squid) [4/5]: super tender squid and I loved the spicy tangy sauce it was in. Peanuts added a nice crunch and the fragrant flavor complimented the tanginess. Thought it was a bit salty, or maybe it was just a lot of bold flavors that were overpowering - had to eat a lot of rice with it. Pretty hot wings [4/5]: was good - super juicy and crispy chicken. Loved the spice and garlic marinade. Also kind of tangy and likewise thought it was quite salty. Like the sauce was just very bold and really coats the entire mouth. Garlic bok choy [3/5]: theyre good - I mean they're just veggies. I think the Infatuation raved about how they change your understanding of vegetables - honestly my mom sautés them just like that sooooo nothing special. Bull frog curry [3/5]: super... interesting. The frog was super tender but i think it's hard to overcook frog and make it tough. It was SUPER salty and just not my cup of tea. I like fish sauce but they reaaaallly weee generous with that here and that's basically all I tasted. Black rice pudding [4/5]: yum! Loved the salty coconut cream paired with the bananas. Crunch of the sesame praline was really good and overall, it was an elevated western rice pudding crossed with creme brulee
Be the first to ReplyFinally came with a large group and had so many dishes.
Everything was really good. Favorites were the pepper crab, spicy bean salad, blood sausage, squid, pork belly, pad kee mao style noodles, curry on rice crackers. I can't even remember! Everything was very good and lots of dishes were really spicy! The wings had a crazy kick! Great ambiance. Great service. Just a great time.
Be the first to ReplyWife and I came here for lunch and loved everything.
We shared the papaya salad which was delicious. I had the yaowaraj noodle and ordered it vegetarian with tofu instead of chicken. IT WAS EXCELLENT. I loved the texture of the noodles, which were also drenched with flavor. The tofu was shockingly good and I legitimately forgot I had ordered the vegetarian version for a while because it felt like I was eating ground chicken. My wife had the khao soi which she really enjoyed. I tried it and liked it a lot but not to the same level as the noodles or salad. Everyone was super friendly. Service was quick and efficient. Would absolutely come back.

I was excited like to try the "only "Thai restaurant with a michelin star in the US.The decor is minimalistic but not "chic".It is squeezed in the corner of the hotel and it was rather gloomy for me.The server was friendly and we were promptly showed the menu. One thing that bothered me from the get go: It felt pretty cramped and our corner table was squeezed between the wall and the next table.- We ordered the mushroom hor mok which is a curry mousse with mushrooms. It was good but the crispy rice cakes were bland : At $19, it was rather expensive.-The octopus in the plah pla muek was not bad but way too spicy ; Even for me who usually tolerates spice well: The lime taste was a little overwhelming.- The yaowaraj noodles were caramelized almost with a burned flavor. I was not impressed. The desert ( pana cotta) was the best dish of the night but come on, you don't come to a thai restaurant to have deserts. They did not wipe the table before the desert and I was left disappointed given the high expectations. Was it an off night? For me, not a one star experience even if the bill was certainly one.In conclusion, I will continue my journey looking for the Thai gem.

My wife and I went to this restaurant all during her pregnancy. She swore that it helped her have such a healthy baby. She especially likes the tender beef dish. I like the bean appetizer dish-- you wrap the spicy beans in lettuce. The spicy and the cool go well together. The other dish I like and 100% always get (and we've probably been 30 times) is the mushroom pâté. It goes on a thick rice cracker. I'm not as crazy about their new restaurant in Japantown -- it's a different theme. In general it's too spicy for me. But this first restaurant is so well balanced in its menu for me -- completely unexpected location, but don't hold that against them. When we were at the hospital, I would even sneak out and get my wife Kin Khao food.

Food is mediocre. Won't check in again cause it's not worth the price.

I quite enjoy Khin Khao and think it's one of the better creative/Thai restaurants I've been to. Definitely deserving of it's Michelin star.

I'm a big fan of Thai food so this place was high on my list given its Michelin star.Unfortunately, I think this place may be overhyped. Different people in my party got the chicken sandwich, the Khao suey, and the noodles and the overwhelming consensus was that everything was *just okay*/passable - none of the flavors were amazing or noteworthy, nothing left us impressed or craving for more.In fact we all agreed that we preferred Farmhouse Thai over this place. What we were impressed with though were the portion sizes and the pricing. Definitely good value for money in SF - just wish the food was better.
Be the first to ReplySmall and intentional menu.
Fish sauce forward flavors. Fresh house made ingredients and toppings. Perfect portion size dishes. I ordered the chicken sandwich, sausage, and black rice pudding. Chicken sandwich was so good! The crispy chicken batter- idk what they put in it, but it was delicious and moist. Not spicy if that's what your looking for. The bun was soft and toasted (not the annoyingly super thick bread like some places have), the toppings were perfect and the chicken was amazing.Black rice pudding was my favorite! It was warm, and steel cut oatmeal textured (soft, but had some bite, not totally soupy or mushy. The pudding is the perfect balance between sweet and savory. The coconut milk sauce is slightly salty and then there's a light sweet caramel sauce and these house made crunchy toasted rice toffee puffs. So good! So perfect! Would go back just for this dish alone. The sausage wasn't bad, I think it just wasn't the flavor I was hoping for. Perhaps the strong fish sauce flavor just wasn't what I was looking for? If you're a fan of fish sauce, you will love the sausage. All in all. I would recommend trying this place.
Be the first to ReplyThis is not the Thai spot on the corner.
It is probably the premiere Thai spot in the country. So if you're coming to get those staple street food styles, you're probably going to be disappointed and think this place is weird or overpriced. It is a world class restaurant and its pretty easy to get a reservation or even walk in. The mushroom pate is a great place to start. The cocktails and deserts are all great.

Nice atmosphere, outstanding food!Went there for lunch and created our own tasting menu with my friend, ordering 6 dishes between us. Everything was delicious! Authentic flavors, party in your mouth!
Be the first to ReplyKin Khao is one of the most affordable Michelin-starred
Kin Khao is one of the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurants you'll find. On top of that, the food is amazing. They do a great job at adding a flare to traditional Thai food while keeping it authentic. If it's your first time, I highly recommend the tasting menu so you can try a little bit of everything. I used to eat here at least once or twice a month but since Covid, they are now doing take out from their Dog Patch location. If you live in San Francisco and haven't been here yet, you must go!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurants
One of the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurants you'll find in the US, Kin Khao impressed me overall. A reservation is a complete must (pre-covid), otherwise you'll find yourself waiting a couple hours at best, or leave not having tried them at worst. Service is excellent, with hot towels provided too. Ambiance is cozy. For a party of two we tried the Pretty Hot Wings, Pad Kee Mao, and Massaman curry which was just the right amount of food. Delicious flavors and quality ingredients across the board. Nothing was overwhelmingly spicy, but this of course depends on you! There used to be a tasting menu available as well.Note that they are located in the Hilton Hotel building so to use the restroom you need to request a keycard and walk quite a distance to the hotel lobby restroom.
Be the first to ReplyPhenomenal food at an even more phenomenal price.
I will pay $20 before tax and tip for entrees at a Michelin Star restaurant any day.Accessible Asian Food that is suitable for all palates. Try the pork belly if you don't mind your meat a little sweet, or go for the noodles for a treat that no one can say no to.The mushroom appetizer is great for people who like mushrooms and don't mind exploring. The wings are decent and pretty spicy, but nothing life-changing.The Thai ice tea is phenomenal, but the caffeine is sure to keep you up at night.
